Hi all,

In my opinion, three notable events have taken place in Caerphilly in the last few weeks.

Firstly, after last years set back, Caerphilly provided the backdrop to Proms in the Park and by all accounts the event was a spectacular success, even blessed by great weather.

Secondly, the Tour of Britain came into Caerphilly and was extremely well attended. I left a meeting early to try and catch the Cyclists as they descended down Caerphilly Mountain towards the Penrhos Roundabout only to get caught in a traffi c jam near the GE Factory - I did see a helicoptor following the race but it was not really the same.

Thirdly, my Wife and I drove our eldest son Sam to Aberystwyth University which left us with an enormous sense of pride tinged with a little bit of sadness that he is off to make his own way in the world - the car was full of Beer so he should be OK!

Next month is our fi rst Christmas events guide so please get your listing in early if you want to be included - it’s going to be a packed issue.

Best Wishes

Paul

The only information I could find about the commencement of Saron is in a book called “Pebyll Seion” (Tents of Zion) which gives the history of the chapels in the Caerphilly District. A short paragraph in the chapter about Bethel, Caerphilly, simply states as follows:

“Several of the Bethel members live in Bedwas and it was felt that services should be held there because one couldn’t expect them to go over to Caerphilly three times on the Sabbath, and it was decided to hold a Sunday School in the afternoon and a sermon or a Prayer Meeting in the evening. It started in the house of D Gould (Dewi Aur). From there it moved to the Schoolroom of The Board and it was while worshipping at the Schoolroom that Saron was built at a cost of just over £300, and was opened in 1891.”

Records were kept in the Minutes of the Chapel, which began in 1913 and these were written in Welsh. The chapel was run by the deacons (all male in those days!) In 1914 both Churches decided to appoint a Joint Minister but this was not achieved until 1917 when Dr David Richards was ordained to the Churches of Saron, Bedwas and Peniel, Trethomas. However, before Dr Richards was ordained he had to face a Military Tribunal in Cardiff because in 1917 the First World War was raging.

The Rev Dr Richards was Minister of both Churches until 1920. The Founder Members worshipped in Welsh, and the Minutes were written in Welsh until the late 1930’s.

The next Joint Ministry of Saron and Peniel took place during World War Two, and so we had another wartime Ordination that of the Rev R Morris Thomas, but no mention of a Military Tribunal this time. When the Rev R Morris Thomas left, the Rev Vincent Morgan was ordained in 1949, but he stayed for only 9 months. In 1952, the Rev David John Matthews was Ordained to Saron and served as its Minister until his death on New Year’s Eve in 1958.

From 1959 to about 1967, the Rev T G O Thomas of Bethel Caerphilly had oversight of Saron until he went to Brecon. Thereafter we were served by visiting Ministers who have given of their time on Sundays to come and take services for us in Saron, and that has continued right up to the present day.

General Secretary Cllr Mrs Raheal Tegwedd Blackwell, who died in 2003, provided most of this history. She ended with these words: “Unfortunately, we have lost our language – but we have kept our Faith.”

We are now about to lose Saron Chapel too, and our final service will take place on Sunday 4th November at 3.00 pm.

All those who wish to say “Goodbye to Saron” are welcome to attend.

The school has also excelled in terms of the government’s newest criteria for excellence, the pass rate of A* to C including Maths and English, with Cardinal Newman’s pupils registering an impressive 59%.

The school, which is open to pupils of all faith denominations, is actively looking for new pupils and will host an open day on October 11th (5pm-7pm), hoping to attract parents from the surrounding area and Caerphilly to select it as their children’s education destination.

“Our most recent Estyn and diocese reports have been nothing short of glowing,” enthuses headteacher Justin O’Sullivan, “and these results are simply further confi rmation that we’re doing things right here at Cardinal Newman.”

“We put the success of our pupils is down to a number of factors: their hard work and dedication, our traditional curriculum approach and the incredible eff orts of our talented and enthusiastic staff and teachers.”

The school is keen to inform parents of the availability of places (for the current Years 7, 8 and 9 in addition to next year’s Year 7) and the fact that its faith-based education is available for non-Catholics.

“These results are fantastic,” adds Mr O’Sullivan, “but we’re not stopping here.

Our ethos is one of continuous improvement, and that philosophy is embedded in everything we do; from the development of individual pupils to our facilities, curriculum and GCSE results.”

For the second year running, Cardinal Newman School has recorded its best-ever GCSE results. In spite of the national downward trend in recorded results, the school is proud to announce that its Year 11 pupils have achieved a 72% pass rate in the A* to C bracket (a rise of 3% on last year’s results).

Quick Recipe

Seasonal Recipe

Autumn Pudding

Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool.

Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half.

Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin.

Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup.

Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

Serves 6Ready in 1 hour

(plus overnight chilling)

Try this variation on summer pudding making the most of the

early Autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped

double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really

indulgent dessert.

• 175g caster sugar

• 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced

• 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced

• 100g raspberries

• 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced

• 100g blackcurrants or blueberries

• 100g blackberries

• 10 slices thick-sliced white bread

• Extra fruit, to decorate

Let’s make no mistake this spring and summer have been disastrous for gardening – rain, rain, two brief hot spells (too hot for planting), and then rain again. But there is some good news – and we all love some of that don’t we?

Autumn is the perfect time for planting – ‘nature’ allows the air temperature to cool (which means that new plants get less stressed), soil temperatures are still quite warm (which encourages quick root growth) and the soil is moist (you can say that again!) and the soil is moist, which helps new plants to root in quickly.

So, the stage is set – it’s up to us to put on a good performance … are you up for it?

Several of our friends who have been talking about planting up borders for months (or was it years?) are determined to get the dirty deed done now – and beloved and I have started stage 3 of reclaiming, and replanting, our garden.

So we will be digging out old shrubs and trees, constructing new beds, importing a few tons of lovely fresh soil and compost and

then eventually the best bit – putting all those plants. Now this may all sound like hard work, and sometimes it is – maybe I am a bit of a masochist, but I somehow enjoy the physical action (Beloved says I make too many grunts and groans when I am digging – but I just can’t help myself ).

The combined pleasure of the sense of achievement and the bliss of a hot bath at the end of the day to sooth those aching muscles combine to make this a job to look forward to …although maybe not very day.

So, come on Caerphilly – let’s plan it and plant it – and if I can help you in any way, either in your garden or helping you chose the right plants from your local garden centre please contact me via the contact details below.

Both bands are based in Bedwas, in its newly refurbished band room on Newport Road. The Next Generation is made up of local children and young people, some of whom have been playing brass or percussion for several years, whilst some are complete beginners. The band is conducted and tutored by Mark Hutcherson, a high school music teacher who is a founder member of the BTM Band, having started playing at the age of 8ys and became a world class euphonium player by the time he was 30yrs old.

The beginners’ classes are taught by Mark’s daughter, Bethan and Kirsty Davies, solo cornet player with the senior band. Both Bethan and Kirsty are also high school teachers.

Since its resurgence 3 years ago, the Next Generation has made a name for itself on the contest and concert stage, having already won a shelf full of trophies in local competitions and has played at many local events such as the Rudry Fireworks evening, the Big Cheese, and at the bandstand in Castle Court welcoming the Olympic fl ame to Caerphilly.

It has also played at the Millennium Centre, and most recently was very proud to play on the stage at the BBC Proms in the Park.

The band also knows how to have fun, and spent an exhausting activity weekend near LLangorse during the August Bank Holiday!

The band’s Autumn diary is already fi lling up, with a West Wales Brass Band Association contest in Fishguard on 6th October, a SE Wales Brass Band Association contest in Blaenavon on 24th November, and it will be joining its “big brother” the BTM Band for a festive concert, “Christmas with the Band” on Saturday 15th December, 7.30pm at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall. Tickets will be available from Visit Caerphilly from mid-October.

Next Generation rehearsals take place at the band-room on Newport Road, Bedwas on Thursday evenings, 6.00-7.30pm and Saturday mornings 10.00-12 noon.

For more information visit the band’s website: www.btmbandnextgeneration.com or email [email protected]. To contact Mark Hutcherson, ring 07865 062274, or BTM Band secretary, Carolyn Jones 07963 393454 [email protected].

The B.T.M Band: Next Generation is the youth section of the B.T.M (Bedwas Trethomas and Machen) Brass Band, which is one of the most successful brass bands in the country.

If you’re hoping to become pregnant then make sure your body is ready for this exciting time in your life

If you’re trying for a baby then you need to ensure that your body is a safe haven so your baby can develop healthily during your pregnancy. The fi rst 12 weeks are particularly important as this is when your baby goes through major developments in a very short period.

By looking after your body from the moment you start thinking about becoming pregnant you will be laying good foundations for the months ahead as your body changes.

Eating healthilyA healthy body weight is important for fertility. Being too overweight or underweight can aff ect the hormones needed to stimulate ovulation.

A well-balanced diet will give you the best chance of conceiving. You should eat plenty of potatoes and pasta to provide complex carbohydrates, at least fi ve portions of fruit and vegetables a day and three portions of dairy, such as yoghurt and cheese. You should also include 2-3 portions of protein in the form of meat, fi sh or cooked lentils a day, too. You only need a small amount of fatty foods to gain their benefi ts, such as avocados, nuts and fatty fi sh.

Drink plenty of fl uids - around two litres a day. This should be mainly water, but milk, herbal teas and fruit juices are also good.

Keep your kitchen clean and always cook food well to avoid infections such as Salmonella and Listeria. You should start taking folic acid supplements as soon as you can and check with your GP to see if they recommend any other vitamins.

Foods to avoid: Cut down on salty, sugary and fatty foods as they provide very little health benefi t. Avoid blue cheese such as Stilton and Gorgonzola or those which have a soft rind of mould, such as Camembert, as well as pates as these tend to contain liver and liver products. Avoid eating raw fi sh, such as Sushi and shellfi sh such as oysters and make sure all fi sh is well cooked to kill off bacteria or viruses. Always check that food is well cooked, including eggs. Your GP should be able to give you an extensive list of what to avoid.

RelaxationDeciding to have a baby is the fi rst step to a major life change. You may not become pregnant as quickly as you hoped, but it’s important to try and remain relaxed. Prioritise your tasks, make sure you give yourself enough ‘downtime’ and pamper yourself. Some people fi nd meditating is a wonderful way to calm the mind and think positively.

ExerciseIf you exercise regularly there is no need to stop this until the later months of your pregnancy, unless your GP advises otherwise or you take part in extreme sports. If you don’t do much exercise, now is a good time to start some gentle activities. Regular, moderate exercise (30 minutes, three times a week) can improve your physical well being and mood and ensure your body is in good shape for pregnancy. It will also help you to build stamina and become supple and fl exible, which will help you during labour. Swimming, walking and yoga are all good exercises if you’re just starting out.

By starting early, you are giving your baby the best chance of a healthy time in the womb, leaving you to enjoy your pregnancy.

A Welsh National Mining Memorial will be unveiled on the anniversary. The memorial will cost £220,000 and fundraising is still ongoing.

To raise money local singers and musicians Daniel and Laura Curtis, will be releasing a single, with all proceeds going towards the memorial.

The single will be a symbol of the heritage of mining in Wales and will be recorded by current and former coal miners.

It will also include underground sounds recorded on location at Big Pit in Blaenavon. The innovative project will take many months to complete with many participants and locations being included.

Daniel and Laura previously organised a memorial concert 300ft underground at Big Pit which involved lowering a piano down into the mine.

In attendance were dignitaries including the First Minister of Wales. The concert was also broadcast on BBC1 and local news.

If you would like to support the memorial fund, please contact The Aber Valley Heritage Group on 02920 830444/5

If you would be interested in getting involved with the single as a participant or sponsor please contact [email protected]

The 14th October, 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the Senghenydd Mining disaster, in which 439 miners lost their lives.

Caerphilly events updateHi everyone,

What a busy month the Events Team have just conquered!

With the second time lucky, BBC Proms in the Park running like a dream, the weather definitely held out for us all, it must have been the magical theme casting a spell to ensure the evening was spectacular for everyone who was involved.

The atmosphere at the event was truly spellbinding, from the décor of the stage to the lights highlighting the Castle. Welsh sprit was in full force with encouragement from presenters Alex Jones and Only Boys Aloud conductor Tim Rhys-Evans, guests were tantalised with performances by tenor Andrew Staples and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas. The BBC Proms was blessed with a special performance from BBC Young Musician 2012 winner, cellist Laura van der Heijden.

The evening ended with a chorus of Sosban Fach and the Welsh National Anthem, gathering the whole of the Owain Glyndŵr Playing Fields to stand on their feet and blast out in Welsh Song to accommodate the spectacular fireworks display.

With the excitement of the BBC Proms still lingering the Events team dived straight into the Tour of Britain that saw the streets of Caerphilly buzzing with excitement and encouragement for the upcoming determined cyclists.

Everyone was in full force through the streets of the town centre before eagerly heading over to the finishing to see the result! All riders deserve a massive well done and undoubtedly raised money for the charities of their choice.

How fortunate we have been this year to attract such prestigious events and media coverage such as the Olympic Torch Relay, Blue Peter Roadshow, Embarrassing Bodies, BBC Proms in the Park and the Tour of Britain.

I’m sure people can see and agree that the County Borough of Caerphilly is being placed firmly on the map!

Anyway, moving swiftly on because we can’t allow for downtime – we now have to book our entertainment for our Christmas events!

Stall applications are now coming in thick and fast.

Keep a look out for our Autumn/Winter What’s on Guide, this will be out in readiness for October half-term. It is packed full of events to keep you entertained on crisp cold days (and maybe some wet ones too!) while we are waiting for Santa!

Don’t forget to follow us on Twitter for regular up dates - @visitcaerphilly.

Speak to you soon.

It is once again approaching that time of year when

we remember the 440 lives lost to the Universal

Colliery Explosion, Senghenydd on October the

14th 1913 (this year to be held Monday the 15th

October to enable the schools to take part).

The victims of this disaster will be remembered,

along with the 81 men and boys who lost their lives

in the earlier Universal Colliery explosion of 1901

at a Memorial Service to be held at the Universal

Colliery Memorial outside Nant-y-Parc Primary

School. The Service will again bring members of

the community together along with the Valley’s

school children to remember all those killed.

Following the Service there will be the opportunity

for those attending to visit the Aber Valley Heritage

Museum at Senghenydd Community Centre.

On display will be 3 scale models produced by

sculptor Les Johnson. We will be encouraging

people to give their views on the bronze models

to help make a decision on the fi nal design for the

new Memorial

We will also have designs for the Memorial garden

on display for people to see.

Thought for the Month A rare, warm and sunny, summer Friday night by the seaside – with fi sh and chips in my hands, sounds like heaven doesn’t it?So there we were, strolling along the prom, avoiding roller skaters, bikes and the occasional happy dog, when I found myself listening to a family conversation going on just in front of us.

Two young lads were energetically explaining to their Mum about the Bible hero Noah; their version of events lacked a little biblical accuracy, but was full of the type enthusiasm and imagination that only kids can muster, and I smiled as their Mum nodded and encouraged their animated story telling.

Dad had been less involved in this interaction … (is it just me, or have we developed a generation of silent dads?) …but as they arrived at a Pub, Dad turned and said something like “right, we’re going in here now – so stop talking about God otherwise people will think we’re mad!”

I think it was a light hearted comment, but it echoed a problem that we have in the UK right now; we seem reluctant to talk about important issues in life.

I suspect this may be because of the fear of off ending, getting stuck in a conversation with a ‘know-all or nutter’, or maybe because we don’t want to have to make a decision about something which isn’t clearcut?

All the above are understandable – but the talking about big issues is part of what makes us human, its’ what we are supposed to do – we do it best, and it can be great fun.

The alpha course is a great way to enjoy ‘big conversations’ in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and there are several starting up over the next few days in the Caerphilly area – the weekly get-togethers often include food (another reason why enjoy them so much) for more information go to alpha.org and search for a course near you – I might see you there!
