My name is Michelle DeWolfe (please feel free to call me Michelle). This is my 9 th year at Beaver Bank Monarch Drive, and my 17 th year teaching. I have taught grades P-6 as a Core French teacher, Literacy Coordinator, Reading Recovery Teacher and Classroom Teacher in both English and French Immersion. I live in the community with my husband Kris and our 12 year old son Ryan. Communication: I encourage a very strong relationship between home and school. As part of our morning routine, students will check for notes from home each day and will copy any messages or homework for family review each evening. Please try to remind students of this responsibility. Time: 8:45 am daily Readerss Workshop is a model that includes a three-part lesson: 1.Teacher read aloud and mini lesson 2. Guided/Independent Reading 3. Sharing Readers Workshop focuses on various genres, reading and comprehension strategies. Our Reading workshop will focus on the seven strategies required to read and understand content. These strategies are: 1. Making Connections 2. Creating Mental Images 3. Making Inferences/Drawing Conclusions 4. Asking Questions 5. Determining What is Important 6. Synthesizing 7. Monitoring Comprehension & Meaning Time: 9:15 am daily, Friday in Computer Lab Similar to the Readers Workshop model, Writers Workshop is also a three part lesson: 1.Explicit writing instruction 2.Guided/Independent Writing 3.Sharing of student work Writers Workshop may focus on genres of writing, the traits of writing, editing, and conventions. Writers Notebook In addition to writing folders in workshop, students will actively work in their own personal Writers Notebooks. These provide a unique, personal opportunity for students to express themselves freely in written form. They are shared and reviewed with students but are NOT assessed. Spelling will be taught at individual levels using the Words Their Way program. This program includes word inventories that identify the specific needs of each student. Based on these results, students will be placed in groupings that address what they need to move forward as spellers. Students from Mrs. Fawsons class will be combined with our students, to create groups for each teacher. In addition to the word study program, students will explore different aspects of the English language including: word choice, word structure, word order, context clues, suffixes, compound words, contractions, and singular and plural words. This will be taught through the work- shop model and through explicit instruction. Creative/Productive: Making 2. Cultural/Historical: Looking 3. Critical/Responsive: Reflecting Visual Arts Students will complete cross-curricular work stations Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week. Stations will provide opportunities for review and practice of concepts previously taught. Activities will be hands-on, reflective, independent or collaborative in nature. Dont practice until you get it right. Practice until you cant get it wrong! -Author Unknown Work Stations Language Arts: Students are encouraged to read every night for a minimum of 20 minutes. At the beginning of each month (closest Mon./Tues.), students will bring home their Genre Study work to complete for the following Monday. Math: Each Friday, we will complete a weekly review of that weeks Math concepts. The review will be sent home with additional activities for those who require it. Music: Tuesdays and Wednesdays Physical Education: Mondays and Tuesdays Library: Wednesdays French: Everyday We will go on several field trips this year to compliment our learning.
