Happy autumn everyone. I really love this time of year. The Coast has calmed down after the crazy

Christmas period, the weather is milder but still warm enough for a dip in the ocean (when it’s not raining, that is), and the Elegant Rabbits are already lining the shelves at the supermarket.

Actually let’s face it, the Easter eggs started appearing before the Christmas tinsel came down. But I ask – who needs a pack of 12 Cadbury Creme eggs in January? Actually don’t get me started – that’s a topic for another column.

OK, where was I? Autumn. It’s traditionally a time for preparing for winter, and in Australia, it’s the time when you might start thinking about the tax man. Yep, the end of the fi nancial year is creeping up on us, so we thought it timely to bring you a story about getting your

fi nances in order. Jarna Baudinette is channelling Noel Whittaker and offering some advice on how to manage your household budget better.

We all have some fi nancial habits that probably need improving, so whether you’re a baby boomer who’s let the paperwork slide or a teenager squirreling away the money from your fi rst weekend job, turn over the page and get yourself in order. It’s not rocket science but good sound advice.

Speaking of rocket science, check out the review of the amazing Holden Volt in our motoring section. It’s the fi rst electric vehicle that successfully deals with the rather large problem of range anxiety. A few of us at the offi ce are keen to have a turn.

Greens leader Christine Milne would support the Volt too, no doubt, which is more than we can say for the Labor party. Turn to Agenda on page 18 for more on the split.

4 DAY FORECAST

SURF REPORTWith Steve Harris from Suburban SurfThis week still looks pretty sad in the hope for a long overdue swell. From Tuesday to Thursday there is an inconsistent E/SE ground swell with waves only around the one to two-foot mark. Winds through to Friday will be tending northerly with lighter NW in the morning. Spots to check would be the open beaches for more swell early, then the northerly corners in the arvos. Saturday has a southerly change

with SW winds early, followed by a SE change. However, waves will be even smaller Saturday around the half to one-foot mark. Hopefully there is a small southerly ground swell predicted to build for Sunday arvo. So hit the open beaches. However, winds will be from the E/NE, making it a bit messy. High tide is between mid-morning and lunchtime all this week and the water temp is still sitting around the 20-degree mark. A spring suit for the early morning is

a good call. Good surfing and he e’s hoping for at least some rideable waves.

Since the GFC, Australian households have been saving at record levels. From the mid 1970s, overall levels of household savings had been steadily declining, dropping

below zero for the fi rst time in the early 2000s. However, according to data from the Reserve Bank of Australia, in 2008 and 2009, there was a huge spike in savings as Australians responded to global fi nancial uncertainty by cutting back on discretionary spending and depositing or investing spare cash.

But despite the recent push for higher savings, it seems many Australians aren’t managing their household fi nances as well as they’d like to be. A recent survey conducted by fi nance group BT assessed the spending habits of 5000 Australians and found that one in fi ve would struggle to come up with $1000 in the event of an emergency, while one in three people spend nearly everything they earn.

BT general manager Deanne Stewart told AAP the results show many Australians are unprepared to encounter fi nancial obstacles in the future – even those on moderate to high incomes.

More than 40 per cent of respondents said they were able to meet their monthly expenses, but a third admitted they were worried about their ongoing ability to do so. Fifty-seven per cent of those surveyed had no regular savings plan – with the highest proportion in the 45- to 54-year-old bracket, who are often nearing the height of their earning capacity – and almost 40 per cent of people would not have enough savings to maintain their present lifestyle if they lost their income for three to six months.

“In many instances, people are living in the hope that they will achieve their goals rather than planning for a fulfi lling and secure future,” Stewart told AAP.

“This has implications for their health and lifestyle, impacting on their levels of stress, and in the longer term infl uencing their enjoyment in the years after they fi nish work.”

Tracey Ferguson is a senior fi nancial advisor at Close Financial Planning in Maroochydore, and says greater fi nancial education is paramount, even for those on higher incomes.

“It’s a fact that whatever our household income, we really need to be better at our personal money management,” Ferguson says. “Many

have experienced discomfort or anxiety around their fi nances at some point in their lives. A lot of the time these feelings come from ignorance, leaving people ill equipped to even know where to start.”

Ferguson says while many people are proactive in managing their mortgage debt, few have a savings plan or investment strategy outside of that.

“Historically, Australians have been really good at paying down their mortgages – we borrow money for a home, and we spend our working life paying it off, before retiring to an age pension,” Ferguson says.

“Having that debt obligation is a kind of forced savings for most, but once that debt has been repaid, or at least reduced, many don’t direct the amount of that loan repayment to ‘smart’ strategies. A lot of the time we see it being frittered away.

“Frequently, I sit with new clients who are working hard, and who

good time to reassess your fi nancial goals. This may mean devising a budget or implementing a savings plan for the fi rst time, or it may involve setting more signifi cant future goals, such as saving for your child’s education costs or your own retirement. Either way, it’s important to seek independent advice from someone qualifi ed, who can help you understand your fi nancial goals, “strip back the emotion” and devise a structured plan to get you there, Ferguson says. A qualifi ed fi nancial planner will also often identify key issues you may have missed.

“Unfortunately, one thing too many Australians do ignore is the protection of their assets, their incomes, and subsequently, their families,” Ferguson says. “It’s still amazing to note the number of people who will insure their car, their boat or their house; but will not insure their most valuable asset – their ability to earn an income.”

continued over >

are earning good incomes, but don’t know what they spend it on,” she says. “They continue on the proverbial treadmill, without making any real fi nancial ground.”

Often this happens because people simply do not have the knowledge to manage their fi nancial affairs, or cannot envisage their circumstances changing in future.

“Often, we see people overcommit themselves by way of credit card or loan repayments, not realising the impact these repayments will have on their household cash fl ow,” Ferguson says. “Maybe they can manage the stretch to meet a loan repayment now, but what if interest rates go up? Or what if their employment income decreases? Or what if they can no longer work because of illness or injury? There are many ‘what ifs’ that too often are not considered.”

With the end of the fi nancial year approaching, it’s a

Tracey Ferguson from Close Financial Planning has f ve key tips for people wanting to get their household f nances in order.

1. Avoid credit cards – Those little pieces of plastic are so easy to use, and sometimes it’s too easy to forget that it’s real money. Many resolve to pay the balance off quickly, but the reality is that they often don’t, and end up paying far more for things than they would have if cash had been used.

2. Stick to a budget – Budgeting is not a four-letter word. Without a budget, how can you know where your money is going? If you don’t know where your money is going, how can you set spending and saving goals? You need a budget, regardless of what you earn.

3. Always have a cash buffer – Don’t spend everything you earn. Always have money you can call on at short notice. Set aside at least f ve per cent of your income

for savings, making sure you keep enough for those ‘just in case’ moments.

4. Insure yourself – Sometimes I see people who are paying too much for death and disability insurance, or are paying for cover they don’t need. However, it’s important that you have enough insurance to protect you and your family in the event of death and disability. It really doesn’t cost that much, and is a key part of making your f nancial plan a successful one.

5. Plan for retirement (it will be here soon enough!) – Talk to your f nancial planner about the option of making additional superannuation contributions. This is a very complex area, fraught with pitfalls, so it’s important you get it right.

Bills, bills, billsEveryone’s income, expenses and spending habits are different, so you need to take an individualised approach to your f nancial affairs. Some people are great at saving; others can cover their weekly expenses but aren’t disciplined enough to put aside cash for larger, less regular expenses, such as car registration or utility bills.

If you f nd yourself coming up short on periodic bills, you can contact your electricity, phone or gas supplier to organise ‘bill smoothing’ – a process where you pay a certain amount every week into your utilities account, rather than one lump sum when the bill is due.

After years of struggling with bills, Mountain Creek woman Kath has adopted this strategy and says she and her family are f nally feeling on top of their f nancial situation.

“I calculated how much our quarterly bills were and broke that down into weekly payments, and each week I automatically B-PAY that amount into the relevant account,” she says. “This way I know those expenses are covered, so after I’ve paid the mortgage and bought groceries and petrol, I know exactly how much is left over.

“We’ve never been great at saving, and were always spending what was left over each week – we realised just how close we were to being in serious f nancial stress if one of us got sick or lost a job,” Kath says. “Because I’m making these payments in advance, it gives you a f nancial buffer zone. I know sometimes I’d like to have the extra money to spend [each week] but it means you always get through.”

casestudycasestudy

First time investorsYou’ve managed to save some cash for the fi rst time – now what should you do with it? Darryl Watt from Ord Minnett Buderim has some tips for new investors.

Most people are familiar with the concept of putting aside regular savings to build up a cash reserve. However, keeping your savings in a bank account will only earn a small percentage of interest per annum and probably not even pace with inf ation. Investing, as opposed to simply saving, can deliver a much better result by putting your money to work so that you can get ahead. Importantly, you do not need huge resources to get started.

The f rst steps in the investment process are to set your goals and evaluate your appetite for risk. Everyone is different depending upon their age, knowledge, f nancial position and life experiences. When combined with your investment time-frame, this can help determine how much you allocate to the f ve basic investment classes of cash, f xed interest, Australian shares, international shares and property. It is important not to put all your eggs in one basket. Diversif cation, or spreading your funds across the investment classes, is very important.

Once you are comfortable with your risk tolerance and asset allocation, you need to determine the right structure in which to hold your investments such as your personal name, a family trust, superannuation or most probably a mix of these.

It is important to stay disciplined and regularly review your position making changes as required, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Darryl Watt is a Representative of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. This article contains general fi nancial advice only and does not consider your personal circumstances; you should determine its suitability to you. Before acquiring a fi nancial product you should consider the relevant product disclosure statement. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

HOSPITAL KIOSK HELPS OUT

When you buy a coffee – or anything else – from the kiosk at Nambour

General Hospital you are making a valuable contribution to local health services.

In fact, that contribution already amounts to nearly $210,000 this fi nancial year.

Kiosk manager Margaret McCrea says the kiosk is run by the Nambour General Hospital Auxiliary and is staffed by about 45 volunteers.

McCrae says the proceeds of the kiosk and the hospital gift shop are donated to the hospital and local health service organisations to buy medical equipment and to provide health care services.

This year they have donated an ultrasound machine to the hospital’s department of emergency medicine and upgraded cots in the birthing suite.

They’ve also given $75,000 to Wishlist and $10,000 to the Kidney Support Network towards transport costs for patients.

Police offi cers have gone back to school in Nambour in a bid to improve safety within the school community.

Nambour State High School students have benefi tted from the presence of police offi cers since the program was expanded to include the school at the start of the year.

Police minister Jack Dempsey

says the program has proven successful in helping to promote safe, sensible and lawful behaviour in other schools.

“The program gives students the opportunity to interact with a police offi cer who can help provide advice on safety and crime prevention and also help students understand the law,” Dempsey says.

Police presence at Nambour High a positive move

The addition of three cownose rays has taken the number of marine animals in Underwater World’s ocean tank to 1000.

The cownose rays, known for their distinctive indented noses, were transported by marine experts to their new home at the Mooloolaba tourist attraction last week, where they were released into the Bay of Rays.

Underwater World underwent a $3.5 million refurbishment last year and the team have been re-stocking the tank in recent months.

The rays have been positioned in the Bay of Rays zone, beside three other newly themed zones – Shark Shipwreck, Coral Cove and Turtle Temple.

New rays arrive at UnderWater World

The kiosk has been operating since 1986 and is predominantly frequented by hospital staff, patients and visitors.

With eight volunteers needed each day, McCrae says new volunteers, who are able to donate four or fi ve hours of time are always welcome. Volunteers prepare fresh salads, sandwiches and hot food every day.

280 Stellar jobs for CoastA decision by international contact centre specialist Stellar to take on additional customer service specialists as it expands its Coast service has been welcomed as a boost for local employment.

Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says it is great for the local economy.

“In addition to the 190 jobs Stellar planned for when it fi rst announced its intention to open here, the company is now anticipating having a local workforce of just over 280 by the end of May,” Jamieson says.

“Clearly, Stellar’s establishment here has been excellent for the company and it is certainly excellent news for jobs in the region.

“Part of council’s economic development strategy to diversify the jobs market has been to attract the professional services sector to the region and the arrival of Stellar in employment terms has been, well, stellar, as far as that is concerned.”

Stellar account executive Kaitlyn Akers says, since opening its doors on the Coast, the company

has endeavoured to utilise local companies and traders, indirectly stimulating further employment growth.

“The council and the people of the Sunshine Coast have made us feel very welcome and are contributing to our success, so we are more than happy to be returning the compliment and sharing the benefi ts in a sustainable way,” Akers says.

“We are now fully operational and conducting business, in addition we are busy recruiting the additional staff we need.”

SUSTAINABILITY EXPERT COMMENDS AUSTRALIANS

Global sustainability expert Annie Leonard says Australians seem to get

the sustainability message better than most, with a host of conservation and sustainability initiatives taking hold at governmental, corporate and grass roots levels; from the ambitious but contentious carbon and mining taxes, down to waste reduction and recycling programs in schools.

Leonard this month visited Melbourne as a guest of the 2013 Sustainable Living Festival, which runs throughout February.

“I have never seen such a high density of people who want a better future,” she says.

But, she says, this is only the start; there’s much more to be done.

Leonard spent years travelling the world examining the causes and effects of humans’ relentless production-consumption cycle on the environment, and now she’s spreading a message of change.

Among the fi gures she highlights:• We use 1.5 times more resources

than the planet can replenish, and create 1.5 times more waste than the planet can assimilate.

• 80 per cent of the planet’s original forests are gone.

• Toxins such as lead, cadmium and mercury are increasingly leaking into the earth’s ground, air and water from discarded electronic equipment, or “e-waste”.

• In Australia alone, there are an estimated 22 million disused

mobile phones, and that number is climbing steadily with the smartphone boom.Leonard also points to the Happy

Planet Index; a measure of well-being and environmental impact, in which Australia ranks at a lowly 76th of 151.

The index, by the New Economics Foundation, charts human life expectancy and personal satisfaction against the number of resources a country uses.

It became clear to Leonard: “If we’re trashing the planet and poisoning each other and we’re not even having fun, why bother? Why not do something different?

“The problem is not that people don’t know there’s a problem – they don’t know what to do about it.”

Leonard believes changing society’s consumption-crazy culture to one that looks after the planet won’t be easy, but at the same time, is entirely possible. It was created by people, so it can be changed by people, she says. AAP

EXPLORERS TO DON GOOGLE INTERNET GLASSES

[ W O R L D N E W S ]

Google glasses of the future

AP

SAN FRANCISCO – Google has invited “explorers” with creative vision and $US1500

($1456) to be part of a select group of people who get to experiment with glasses synced to the internet.

A video intended to capture what it feels like to use Google Glass was posted online on Wednesday at google.com/glass/start/ along with information about what the eyewear does and how to be among those putting them to the test.

“We’re looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass,” said a message at the website.

“We’re still in the early stages, and while we can’t promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting.”

Roller coaster rides, ice skating spins, sky diving, trapeze stunts, ballet moves, and ski runs captured from fi rst-person perspectives were among action snippets woven into the Google Glass video.

The eyewear features built-in camera, microphone and speaker technology and can synch to the internet using wireless connections.

Google glasses that overlay the internet on daily lives should hit the market in a little more than a year – technology the tech giant hopes will someday make fumbling with smartphones obsolete.

Google has been speaking with eyeglass frame companies about a consumer version of the glasses, which would cost signifi cantly less than the Explorer prototypes. AFP

GREENS SPLIT WITH LABOR A SMART MOVE

Christine Milne has done Julia Gillard a big favour, just when the prime minister needs one.

Last Tuesday, the Australian Greens leader telephoned the prime minister about 20 minutes before the senator’s National Press Club speech to say their post-2010 election agreement was null and void.

Gillard says she was “unsurprised” by the phone call.

“I said, sort of, `thanks, righto’ and that was it.”Milne cited Labor’s support for coal seam gas

development, mining in Tasmania’s Tarkine and reluctance to broaden the mining tax as the main reasons for the split. Labor MPs and union bosses had been agitating for the political divorce to come much sooner.

The federal opposition has had signifi cant success in painting the Greens as the “extremist” tail wagging the dog.

Before he retired, former Greens leader Bob Brown was routinely described by Opposition Leader Tony Abbott as the “real prime minister”.

PREVIEWIt was always a strained relationship, and now both Labor and the Greens can cut their losses and get on with setting new goals before the election.

WORDS Paul Osborne, AAP senior political writer IMAGES AAP

Abbott also made the carbon tax – which the Greens demanded after the 2010 election and was later embraced by the Labor government as an essential economic and environmental reform – into a noose around the prime minister’s neck. Abbott now says to prove the divorce is signed and sealed, the government should axe the carbon tax.

Gillard admitted not long after the 2010 election – which delivered a hung parliament – she had promised there would be no carbon tax; but “circumstances changed” following Labor’s deal with the Greens and independents that allowed it minority government.

Liberal strategists believe the party has enough ammunition to unseat South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young and deliver three coalition senators in that state – with independent Nick Xenophon and Labor picking up the remaining two upper house seats.

The negative impression of Labor being the puppet of a minor party resonates particularly in blue-collar outer metropolitan seats – where

deputy leader and lower house MP Adam Bandt in 2010, and shore up inner-Sydney seats such as Grayndler held by minister Anthony Albanese. As for the Greens, they have much to crow about in terms of deals achieved by working with the Gillard minority government.

They’ve been a decisive factor in the government being able to achieve its impressive record of 466 pieces of legislation through parliament without losing a vote since the 2010 election – not to mention surviving 72 “no confi dence”, censure and suspension motions brought by the coalition.

They helped put constitutional recognition of indigenous people on the national agenda, helped put a price on carbon pollution, backed the mining tax, enabled Fair Work laws to pass, started work on a dental health care scheme and drove parliamentary reforms.

But to be fair, many – if not all – of these issues were already Labor objectives or values.

Still, Milne now has a chance to set a new Greens agenda and, with the coalition on track

A visible split between the two parties gives both a chance to start “re-branding”, to use a marketing term, and establishing clear battle lines

to win a lower house majority, pitch her party as a form of political insurance in the Senate.

The Greens leader will spend the next seven months attempting to paint Labor and the coalition as friends of mining billionaires and forest destroyers.

There is also the potential for the Greens to throw a spanner in the works over Gillard’s plan to take $1 billion off the top 20 companies’ research and development grants and spend it on smaller businesses to innovate and create jobs. Milne says the innovation fund could be blocked in parliament unless the mining tax is amended to reap bigger benefi ts from the resource boom.

University of Melbourne political analyst Dr Damon Alexander sums up the Labor-Green split like this: “It must just free both parties up to belt away at each other in the lead-up to the election, which will play nicely to both of their support groups.”

The question remains just how much it will play into the hands of the coalition.

Labor needs to hold its vote and the coalition needs to win back the “Howard battlers” – and mining electorates such as Queensland’s Capricornia.

Critics of the Greens’ alliance with Labor wonder why Gillard gave so much away in the 2010 agreement when it was a lay-down misere that the Greens would not support an Abbott government.

Labor strategists know this year’s September 14 poll is likely to see the vote polarise between the government and opposition, leaving the Greens with about 10 per cent of the primary vote.

They are also aware Greens preferences traditionally fl ow Labor’s way by a large majority, especially in inner-metropolitan seats where the minor party’s vote is strongest.

So a visible split between the two parties gives both a chance to start “re-branding”, to use a marketing term, and establishing clear battle lines.

Labor wants to win back the seat of Melbourne, won from the ALP by Greens

Christine Milne and Julia Gillard in happier times

NEW MED SCHOOL NEEDED FOR SCUH

The University of Queensland has cited legal and contractual issues as

its reasons for withdrawing from a partnership in a Skills, Academic and Research Centre planned for the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

And while the University of Queensland’s withdrawal is disappointing, University of the Sunshine Coast pro vice chancellor professor Mike Hefferan says it will be business as usual for the construction of the hospital and the $60.8 million training and research centre.

“It’s not the end of the world, it’s a bit of a disruption,” Hefferan says.

“It’s an issue that Queensland Health will settle quite quickly I believe.”

While he says it is disappointing that the University of Queensland is unable to commit to the project it will be replaced by another medical school.

University of Queensland senior

deputy vice chancellor professor Deborah Terry says the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board was advised of the university’s decision in September.

“The decision was based on a full assessment of risk, and a range of legal and contractual matters,” Terry says.

“There was signifi cant negotiation to try to overcome the matters but there was no suitable resolution.”

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kevin Hegarty says the SARC is an integral part of the Kawana Health Campus.

“The SARC’s dedicated and integrated research and learning spaces will provide opportunities for health professionals to participate in teaching, research and clinical practice in one convenient location,” he says.

“USC, TAFE and SCHHS (Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services) are the current foundation

members and have reached agreement on the terms of the partnership.”

He says while the role of the medical school provider was planned to be undertaken by the University of Queensland, “UQ’s withdrawal from the SARC has created the opportunity for an established medical school provider to work with the other foundation members to deliver the vision for SARC and a market sounding process will commence in March in this regard.”

With only a few other smaller medical schools in Queensland, it could make way for an interstate university to join the partnership.

It’s not the end of the world, it’s a bit of a disruption. It’s an issue that Queensland Health will settle quite quicklyMike Hefferan

BETTING ON THE NEXT BULL MARKET

The All Ordinaries has cracked through the psychological 5000 barrier

as if it didn’t exist. It was a line in the sand that investors feared would prove a force to be reckoned with.

Not that we are hearing much complaint from our dealing room (more like cheers). But are we in the next bull market?

Looking to technical analysis for

a possible answer, there is a tool that is used to help determine the health of the market. The Coppock Indicator is the famed tool used to identify the start of a new bull market. This technical analysis indicator was named after Edwin Coppock, an economist in the 1960s who had been asked by the Episcopal Church to identify cheap buying opportunities for long-term investors.

Coppock reasoned that setbacks in the stock market were like bereavements and required a period of mourning. He asked the church bishops how long it took for people to get over the death of a loved one. Their answer was between 11 to 14 months and so he used these time periods for his price calculations. The indicator is designed for use on a monthly time scale. It’s the sum of a 14-month rate of change and 11-month rate of change, smoothed by a 10 period weighted moving average. The signal is when the line starts to rise after being below the zero line. This happened at the end of July 2012.

After receiving the “all clear”, the theory goes that it’s now time to look for stocks to accumulate for long-term investment. The important proviso Coppock made was to look to buy stocks making new highs.

It is not a signal that you get very often with only half a dozen positive signals over the last 30 years, though history shows that it has been a very reliable indicator.

I would not suggest that the Coppock indicator is the panacea for the stock market, but is a very useful weapon. It certainly looks the goods as our market marches forward to the highest level since September 2008.

Hollywood celebrities are embracing a new trend – naturally grey hair, or

hair dyed to give greyish tones.

Kate Moss, 39, Kelly Osbourne, 28, Mary Kate Olsen,

26, and Pink, 33, have all been seen in varying shades of grey, with Osbourne

(pictured left) sporting a striking, almost

lavender, tint at the recent Golden Globes ceremony and mauve with a grey tint at the recent Academy Awards.

The trend is not a dull grey, the shade of lead, but prettier shades. New techniques and

products can make sterling, pewter and pearl tones glimmer and shine.

The topic of “owning, not hiding your grey hair” seems to trend every couple of years but should reach a crescendo as the thundering herd of baby boomers overtakes the majority of the population.

Did you know?• Your chance of going grey increases 10 to

20 per cent every decade after 30 years.• Hair colour depends on the distribution,

type and amount of melanin in the middle layer of the hair shaft.

• Hair has two types of pigments: dark (eumelanin) and light (phaeomelanin). They blend together to make up the wide range of hair colours.

• The pigment cells that make up melanin position themselves at the hair follicles, the openings on the skin’s surface through which hair grows.

• With age comes a reduction of melanin. The hair turns grey and eventually white. It’s not fully understood why the pigment production shuts down. AAP

TO GO GREY OR NOT TO GO GREY? TODAY, IT’S A CHOICE

As summer draws to a close and cooler autumn days arrive, many of us begin to get a little lazy about sun safety.

A tan built up over summer often gives a false sense of security, and with the sun packing less of a punch during the day, we’re not as careful about wearing sunscreen and hats, according to Sunshine Coast skin cancer expert Dr Scott Giffi n.

“As soon as it starts to cool down people forget to wear their sunblock,” says Dr Giffi n of SolarDerm Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinic in Minyama.

“As soon as it starts to warm up in November and throughout the school holidays people become aware of it again. That’s when people will often come in for a check, at the height of summer.

Don’t get slack about sun protection as summer ends

They’re not wearing as many clothes and are seeing more of the skin. They might notice a spot that’s been covered up, or they’re seeing more of their partner’s skin.

“I recommend to people they wear sunblock every day, regardless of whether they know they’re going outside or not,” he says. “We all have exposure to UVA and UVB every day. In terms of reducing the accumulation of UV radiation, as soon as you can stop that accumulation, you’re dramatically reducing your chances of getting skin cancer.

“There’s also the anti-aging effect of wearing sunblock. The UVA is what causes the premature aging and wrinkles.”

Giffi n warns against avoiding the sun altogether, as some sun exposure is necessary in order for our bodies to make vitamin D – which is especially important during the winter months to boost the immune system.

“The middle of the day is where you see UVB, and that’s responsible for your vitamin D synthesis. You’re not going to make any vitamin D

unless you’re getting some exposure between 9am and 3pm, but you only need a couple of minutes’ exposure with a small wallet-sized area that has not been covered with sunblock.”

With so many sunscreens on the market, with all manner of SPFs, which is the best one to buy? Giffi n says an SPF higher than 30 isn’t necessary unless you’re in a high-risk category.

“For fair skinned people with a history of lots of skin cancers, the more help they can get the better, especially around the critical areas like the nose and ears.”

While Giffi n recommends daily use of sunscreen, he says there’s no hard evidence to support that it prevents melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

“It may do, but we can’t say defi nitely that it does,” he says. “It will prevent them from getting the more common other forms of cancer, but not necessarily melanoma.”

Giffi n says it’s also important to wear broad-brimmed hats and long-sleeved shirts, no matter what the season.

when buying hearing aids

1. Interview a hearing professional. “The number one thing to remember is that the value you get out of your hearing aid is based on the skills and abilities of the hearing health professional. The professional service is a determining factor in the successful outcome of the f tting and also the degree of satisfaction from the performance of hearing aids.

2. Match your hearing aids to your specif c hearing loss. Your hearing loss is as unique as your f ngerprint. Two people with a similar degree of loss will process sound differently depending on the cause of the loss and length of time the problem has gone untreated.

3. Try before you buy. Ask for a demonstration of the hearing aids recommended for you. Even better, trial the hearing aids in your environment, this is the only way to really know if the hearing aids are suitable for you.

4. Know all the options before you purchase. Your hearing professional should work with a range of hearing aid styles and brands, and offer you a needs assessment appointment to determine which products are suitable for your unique lifestyle, hearing loss and budget. Be careful of providers who promote one particular brand only without discussing other options: this may not be the most suitable hearing aid for your needs.

5. Seek the best aftercare to get the best performance from your hearing aids. No matter how state-of-the-art your hearing aids may be, they will not address your hearing loss if they are not regularly checked and adjusted to your changing needs. An aftercare program is an absolute must!

The Bundy spirit to help f ood victims

[ M Y P A L A T E ]

Bundaberg is known for its spirit. Now that spirit is giving back to the fl ood-hit city.

Bundaberg Distilling Company is launching a special edition of its Bundy Rum to help rebuilding efforts after the city was ravaged by its worst fl oods ever last month.

Each household will be given a free bottle of the new Road To Recovery Series rum bearing the name of the street it is on.

The remaining bottles will be sold for $60 and will only be

available at the distillery gate, in a bid to attract more visitors to the city. All proceeds, along with

part of the sales from other Bundaberg Rum products, will go towards raising $250,000 to support fl ood recovery efforts.

Bundaberg Distillery manager Graham Wrigglesworth says the company has been a part of the community for 125 years: “It is our privilege to bring some enjoyment back to the local community in the wake of this latest fl ood crisis.” AAP

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have become the latest celebrities to turn their hand to winemaking with the launch next month of their own rose wine.

The couple have teamed up with the French winemaking Perrin family to develop the Miraval Cotes de Provence label, named after their Chateau Miraval estate in the south of France. The wine, produced from the couple’s sprawling estate near the town of Brignoles, will be priced at around 15 euros ($19.60) a bottle.

Jolie and Pitt acquired the 500 hectare estate in 2008 for around 40 million euros and have used it as a summer residence. The estate includes around 50 to 60 acres of vines.

Other celebrities who have invested in wine are Michael Schumacher, Sting, David Beckham and Madonna. AAP

RACQUETS AND ROMANCE IN COOLUM

Tennis fans looking for love or new friends can meet their match at Palmer Coolum Resort’s new ‘Doubles for Singles’ night.

The fi rst event will be held at the Palmer Coolum Resort Tennis Centre on March 13, and you don’t need previous tennis experience – the aim is to meet new people in a fun, sporty environment.

‘Doubles for Singles’ is the brainchild of the resort’s tennis professional, Ivan Rusev, who says tennis is a great way to meet people for tennis, friendship or both.

Darren J Ray is bringing his Fabulous Sounds of the Sixties show to Caloundra RSL next week, following a third win for best production at the South Qld Entertainer of the Year Awards. There will be 10 performers on stage delivering hits of the 60s, as well as giveaways, funny routines, a prize for best 60s outf t and plenty of laughs.

“Playing tennis socially is a fantastic way to have fun, keep healthy and come into contact with likeminded people,” Rusev says.

“Our emphasis is on everyone having a great time and it doesn’t matter if they’ve been playing for years or never picked up a racquet before – we will have something for everyone.

“You might be looking for an enjoyable way to keep fi t and not have anyone to play with. You might be new to the area and searching for a social tennis group, or, you might be after an alternative way of meeting new people. Either way, Doubles for Singles is the perfect way to fi nd friendship or love.”

The resort says you don’t need to be single to take part, just willing to share a laugh with like-minded folk. There will be a glass of champagne on arrival, tennis games, novelty games, trivia and prizes to help break the ice, along with a barbecue afterwards. Experts and novices are all welcome to take part with all court, racquet and ball hire included. Bookings close on March 12 and a 25 per cent discount applies to anyone who brings another two people with them to play.

A REVOLUTION IN MOTORINGWORDS Peter Atkinson, AAP IMAGES AAP

Unlike other electric vehicles it carries a conventional petrol engine, which only gets used when the batteries need charging. The Volt has a range of about 80 kilometres.

If you want to take a longer trip the petrol “generator” engine gives the Volt a theoretical range of about 560 kilometres – and you can always stretch that by adding more petrol.

Holden calls it a “range extender” electric vehicle, giving it a signif cant advantage in the market.

The Volt has a premium feel to it.Best of all, it looks and feels like a

car worth its $59,990 price tag.

Electrifying. That’s the only way to describe Holden’s new eco-fl agship, the Volt.

While the debate rages about global warming, carbon taxes and zero emissions, the Volt is a true game-changer in the way people choose to drive.

Electric cars remain a long way from being mainstream for one reason: range. The best of them might get you 150 kilometres down the road – but in most cases it will take a few hours to recharge the batteries to get you home again.

The Volt rewrites the rules.

Satellite navigation is standard, as is a premium Bose audio system. There are heated seats, eight airbags, keyless entry, push-button start and Bluetooth connectivity – all the mod-cons you’d expect at this price.

In terms of smoothness and quietness it also delivers a prestige driving experience.

And because of its substantial weight, it feels immensely sturdy and well-glued to the road.

One drawback: it sits so low to the ground the Volt has minimal ground clearance, so it would be next to

useless for driving on unmade country roads.

Still, it’s fi rst and foremost a city machine and theoretically you could drive your car without ever needing to refuel it.

Recharging the Volt is a simple process, too: plug it in at night, just as you would with your smartphone. A full charge on a conventional power point takes about six hours – Holden says at a cost as low as about $2.50.

The Volt’s bucket seats in the back allow space for the batteries, which run down the spine of the car (where a transmission tunnel would normally go). This means cargo space is not compromised by the batteries, unlike some hybrids.

Our test drive in the Volt comprised two distinct parts. During the week, I drove it around the city, never more than 50 kilometres or so at a time, and plugged it in at night to recharge the batteries. That phase totalled 150 kilometres, mostly in peak-hour city traffi c, without using one drop

<from previous pageof petrol. Average consumption: 0.0 litres per 100 kilometres.

Part two was a 350-kilometre round trip, with an overnight stop at the halfway point. On that journey, having depleted the Volt’s batteries after the fi rst 70 kilometres or so, we utilised the Volt’s range-extender petrol engine to keep the electric motor ticking over.

We used about 18 litres of petrol, as well as adding an electric recharge at the halfway point, for an average fuel consumption of about 3.6 litres per 100 kilometres. Still pretty remarkable stuff.

Around town its 370 Newton metres of torque (similar to a typical petrol V6) give it more than adequate acceleration. It cruises effortlessly on the highway.

Signifi cantly, after more than 500 kilometres of driving, the Volt’s fuel tank was more than half full, with a range of 275 kilometres still left.

Holden says its offi cial combined fuel consumption fi gure is a staggering 1.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Electrifying indeed.

The luxury of choice.

FORD CLASSIC COMES HOMEFord welcomed the return of a hero last week with the reveal of the fi rst fully Ford-built GT at Broadmeadows.

It signals the start of FPV production at Ford’s Broadmeadows Assembly plant and the return of full GT production after 37 years.

“FPV is the ultimate version of the Falcon and we are very excited to have taken over assembly of these performance machines for our FPV customers,” Ford Australia President and CEO, Bob Graziano, says.

“Ford’s history with performance vehicles goes back a very long way and nameplates such as GS and GT are warmly welcomed back in-house.

“The F6 range features the most potent version of our locally developed i6 engine and it’s a real buzz for us to be completing these cars for the fi rst time.

“Designed for our enthusiast customers, FPV vehicles are the hero cars of our local line-up and are genuine performance machines. From the 310 kilowatt F6 to the 335

[ M O T O R I N G ]

kilowatt, 32-valve, quad-cam, supercharged Miami V8 powered GT, each FPV provides customers absolute performance.”

At the end of 2012, Ford bought the assets of FPV required to engineer, manufacture and market the FPV brand in Australia.

Production of FPV vehicles moved from the Glenbarry Road facility, to Ford’s Broadmeadows Assembly Plant 1, over the summer.

The fi rst fully Ford-built FPV to come from the new Broadmeadows dedicated FPV assembly facility is a Silhouette Black GT, with Black Shadow Leather interior.

BEETLE GOES BACK TO ITS ROOTS

When the original Beetle was launched in 1938, it was known simply as ‘the Volkswagen’ and quickly acquired a raft of nicknames from across the world. Whatever the name, the Beetle’s popularity is not in question, with 22.5 million sold over 74 years.

In the latest generation, an effi cient engine and innovative features combine with heritage to make a modern classic – an icon, reimagined.

The design moves away from that of the New Beetle of 1998 and draws on cues from the original Beetle and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005. The Beetle is now longer, wider and lower,

[ M O T O R I N G ]

giving it a more masculine and dynamic appearance. The car’s new proportions mean the roof extends back further, the windscreen is shifted back and the rear is now more akin to that of the original Beetle.

Inside the cabin, the Beetle’s designers created a modern, practical and distinctive appearance with easy to identify and ergonomic controls.

Certain features, such as the glovebox and colour accent panels hark back to the original. The boot capacity is a practical 310 litres, up from 209 litres in the 1998 model. The Beetle has four seats, with a split-fold rear seat for added versatility.

A wide range of innovative optional equipment is also available, ranging from leather seats through satellite navigation to Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights – some of which are available for the fi rst time on a Beetle.

One economical engine will be offered in Australia; the 1.4 litre TSI twincharged petrol engine which supplies 118 kilowatts of power and 240 Newton metres of torque. This engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard or with an optional seven-speed Direct Shift Gearbox.

Over 22.5 million Beetles have been sold since the original model was created in 1938, putting it among the world’s top three most successful cars of all time; over one million of these were New Beetles, of which over 8800 were sold in Australia.

Win a trip to JapanHonda Australia is giving away two business class return fl ights to Tokyo, Japan and $10,000 spending money in its Japanese Holiday competition.

“We want to give people the opportunity to create their ideal holiday,” says Stephen Collins, director and general manager sales and marketing.

“We will provide the business class tickets and $10,000 spending money. The itinerary is up to you.”

Collins says Japan is a country of beauty and diversity and there is something of interest for everyone, whether that is attending the home of Japan’s MotoGP, taking in the natural wonders of Mt Fuji and the cherry blossoms or a visit to Tokyo Disneyland.

The competition is open to all Australian residents aged 18 and over and closes on March 31 at 11.59pm AEST. To enter visit: honda.com.au/japan.

ACROSS DOWN

HOROSCOPESARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 Just remember there is a fine line between reckless behaviour resulting in regrets and spontaneous action leading to success. Hopefully you’ll be able to walk that fine line now.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 Attached Taureans – pamper your partner with TLC. Are you sick of being single? Sparks could fly with a sexy Scorpio or a caring Capricorn – someone who is wise beyond their years.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 Creative inspiration is high, as you pluck ideas from your imagination and discuss them with like-minded souls. When you speak up now, it will be straight from the heart.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 It’s a great time to study a topic that has always fascinated you, or plan a trip somewhere that has always piqued your curiosity. Single crabs, love and travel are linked.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Sun/Saturn/Pluto aspects make for a positive weekend. Your detective skills are firing, as you uncover information that others miss. Spend quality time with loved ones.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 With the moon in Scorpio, your compulsive streak is likely to go into overdrive this weekend as your worry-wart side takes over. If you relax, you’ll see problems more clearly.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Business and financial negotiations are favoured. It’s also a fabulous weekend to socialise with colleagues, as you discover previously unknown information about each other.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 The buzz word this weekend is communication. It’s also a suitable time to study and research, as your X-ray vision picks up information that was previously hidden.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 Adventure-loving archers aren’t particularly domesticated. But, with five planets lighting up your home zone, it’s time to tackle DIY jobs or entertain family and friends in style.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 Communication and collaboration are the buzz words. The more you discuss ideas with others, the more your world will expand. Find clever ways to contribute to your community.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 Aquarians can be very spontaneous, unpredictable and chaotic. But the more organised you are this weekend; the more time there’ll be for having fun with friends.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 With the sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars and Neptune all visiting your sign, you’re emanating serious charisma as your beauty, brains and sex appeal make others sit up and take notice.

4-DAY FORECAST

FISHING REPORTwith Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

Rain, rain, and more rain. Surely this has gone on long enough. This may present some new opportunities to go for a SUP in your front yard, or perhaps in your local park if it continues. Although the recent storm activity turned on some epic waves through the end of last week, the current three to four-foot easterly swell and E/NE winds hold few options, apart from the northerly pockets and Kings Beach at Caloundra. All is not lost with wind predicted to change to S/SE over the weekend and continuing throughout next week; however it will also intensify to around 10 to 15 knots with the ground swell holding at around three to f ve foot, so the protected points will your best option.

ESTUARY: Mud crabs are working out of their holes and moving into the deeper water at the mouths of Eudlo and Petrie Creeks. Bream and f athead off the Cotton Tee retaining walls. Jew, estuary cod and mangrove jack are taking live bait in the Cod Hole. SURF: Sand whiting along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide using pippies. Quality tailor and bream tagging frogmouth pillies at Pincushion. Flathead and dart along North Shore. OFFSHORE: Moses perch, Maori cod and sweetlip are taking squid at The Blinker with dawn and dusk best. Barwon Banks and Wide Caloundra are returning cobia, snapper, pearlies and some big sharks.FRESHWATER: Lake McDonald for bass, and Mary River cod on lures trolled along the weed drop off with 10 to 15-foot favoured. A change of colour can be all it takes. Plenty of shrimps in Obi-Obi Creek, with bass and jew feeding in the cooler part of the day.
