YANGON (Reuters) - Corruption is the top concern for businesses
in Myanmar, which is undergoing liberal reforms after the end of
military rule, according to a UN-led survey released on Tuesday.

(most probably) to "Turk". Yunnan in the 13th century was
ruled by a mainly Turkic-speaking Muslim elite (under the
Mongols). By the 1800s Yunnan was about a third Muslim - mainly
people of Turkic descent but also others. The Burmese probably
called these people Turks (now pronounced Tayoke), but the word
gradually came to signify all people from the northeast (eg

Q:Tell us some basic facts about yourself.My name is Jasmine
Lynn and I am from Orange County,
California. I am 23 years old and my parents are U Kyaw Lynn and
Daw Yi Yi Maung.
Q: Where did you attend school in Myanmar? Where?I went to
B.E.H.S No.1 Dagon and it is located in Dagon
Township.
Q: When did you move to US? When you start school in US? Tell me
about changes/ challenges.
I moved to the US in 2006. I was 16 years old then and I started
high school as a freshman. The challenges I faced when I first
moved here were the language barrier and culture differences. It
took me a while to get used to the language. At first, I was very
shy and was afraid to talk to my classmates due to my lack of
confidence in English. Also, I experienced culture shock because I
wasnt familiar with the Western culture. It took me about a year to
adapt to my new surroundings and get used to everything around
me.
Q: Graduated from? Whats the next step? Are you cur-rently
working? where?
I graduated in 2013 from University of California, Irvine with a
bachelor degree in Biological Sciences. In August, I am start-ing
my first year at Southern California College of Optometry to become
an optometrist and planning to specialize in either low vision or
pediatrics. I am currently working full time right now as a manager
at Abercrombie and Fitch.
Q: Have you been back to Myanmar? if no then would like to? If
yes, going there again? If no, Which places would like to visit in
Myanmar?
I havent been back to Myanmar ever since I moved here because of
school. I am planning to back next summer and when I do, Id like to
travel and do some volunteering works for less privileged and less
fortunate minority groups in Burma. The fact that I was born and
raised in Burma, I am very familiar with social inequality. Because
of that I want to donate my time by making a positive impact to
those who cannot and help shape the future.
Q: Any plan going somewhere else visit other then Myanmar? (Why?
Reason)
My dream is to travel around Europe after I graduated from
Optometry School. I would like to go to Spain, Italy, France and
Netherlands.

Suu Foundation Aims to Improve Healthcare and Education in
Myanmar
During a three-day visit to Hawaii in January 2013, Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi said a healthy and well educated society is essen-tial for
continued progress and development in Myanmar. She explained how,
after decades of neglect, Myanmars health and education
institutions are in serious decay, and appealed to the audience to
assist her in reenergizing health and education. On that request,
the Suu Foundation was conceived.
Daw Suus call to action inspired everyone. However, there was no
mechanism in place to rally the goodwill and support that she
generated. A handful of people from the Myanmar community, together
with friends of Myanmar in Hawaii, developed a plan for the Suu
Foundation as a US-based, non-profit, humanitarian foundation that
would garner international support to improve healthcare and
education in Myanmar. Initial start-up funding was provided by the
Myanmar community in Hawaii and the Hummer Tuttle Foundation.
Suu Foundation was registered as a non-profit legal entity in
the US in March 2013. Daw Suu herself publicly launched the
foun-dation before an international conference of journalists in
Yangon in March 2014.
Under its charter, the foundation focuses on its humanitarian
mis-sion without consideration to politics, religion, race, and
ethnic-ity. The foundations dream is for every Myanmar child to
have equal access to proper healthcare and quality education,
regard-less of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or religion. We
dream of the day when Myanmar health and academic institutions are
again world-class institutions with cutting-edge knowledge,
research, and discoveries. We dream of the day when Myanmar
research-ers, academicians, and students stand shoulder-to-shoulder
with their counterparts from around the world.
Daw Suus unwavering commitment and personal sacrifice to
im-prove conditions for the people of Myanmar have inspired several
prominent people to volunteer their support for the foundation.
Former US First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and
former US First Lady Laura Bush are the foundations honorary
co-chairs, and influential actor Michelle Yeoh, who portrayed Daw
Suu in the film The Lady, serves on the foundations board of
directors. Air Asia has made a generous financial pledge to
ad-vance the foundations goals.An all-volunteer staff manages Suu
Foundations day-to-day oper-ations. The foundation is currently
raising funds, assessing needs,
and identifying pilot projects to conduct in Myanmar.
Suu Foundation would like to highlight and acknowledge the
financial support it has received from the Myanmar community in
Hawaii and Myanmar Club of Singapore. Their support, in partnership
with the East-West Center in Honolulu, is enabling
the foundation to conduct its first project, a Teachers
Ex-change and Training (TexT) pilot project, in Myanmar this
year.
The Myanmar communities of Singapore and Hawaii demon-strate the
tremendous power of Myanmar overseas communi-ties in the effort to
develop and improve the lives of people in Myanmar. If all Myanmar
overseas communities band together and participate in Suu
Foundation efforts to revitalize Myanmar health and educa-tion, we
can make significant progress and help fulfill our collective hopes
and dreams for the people of Myanmar.
