YANGON Yangon, the former capital-cum-the commercial hub, is the gate way to Myanmar. The lush tropical trees, spacious and green parks and gardens entitle Yangon as “the Garden City of the East”. Yangon covers about 350 sq km and has over five million population. Historically Yangon was founded over 2000 years ago. At that time, it was named Okkala and Dagon. In 1755 when King Alaungpaya of Konbaung Dynasty conquered all enemies, he renamed the name as Yangon, s ignifying the End of Strife. The city was anglicized as Rangoon when the Lower Myanmar was occupied by the British in 19th Century. The city was laid out by the British like a chessboard pattern crisscrossed by roads running north to south and east to west. Yangon has, as a result, the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today. To explore some bustling streets sans night life and centuries old buildings with magnificent architecture reminds Yangon’s past for those who try to enjoy life away from city life. Yangon, with lots of tourist attractions, draws many visitors throughout the year. The world-famous Shwedagon Pagoda, the golden glory and the soul of Myanmar, is the highlight and a must-see of Yangon.

Old Roman Catholic church in ruins which can still be seen built in 1750 AD. Thanlyin continued to be a major port until it was destroyed by King Alaungpaya in 1756 during the Mon revolt. Thanlyin became part of the British Empire in 1852 after the Second Anglo-Burmese War. The British built the oil refinery in the city in the early 20th century to process the oil shipped from central Myanmar. The refinery was destroyed during World War II. It was rebuilt in 1957, and underwent expansion in 1979 with Japanese assistance. Since the 1990s, the city has undergone major changes. Thanlyin was finally connected to Yangon by road in 1993 when the Thanlyin Bridge was built. Kyaik Khauk Pagoda is a landmark of Thanlyin. About 20 km South of

Twantay lies at the east of Twantay canal which was dug during the time of British rule in Myanmar and this busy canal links Yangon Region and Ayeyarwaddy Region. Located at around 11 km south of Mandalay is one of the ancient capitals of last Myanmar kingdom called Amarapura which signifies the City of Immortality. It is also called “Taung Myo” – the southern town. Amarapura was the capital of Myanmar for three discrete periods during the Konbaung dynasty in the 18th and 19th centuries before finally supplanted by Mandalay in 1857. Although any significant remnants of the ancient city can be hardly found, the nowadays suburb of Mandalay city still maintains the traditional art of silk weaving. The hand-woven silk produces are not only proudly worn by locals at auspicious occasions but also attract the heart of foreign visitors because of its richness in colour and design. The world’s longest wooden bridge, U Bein Bridge, spanning across the east and west of Taungthaman Lake is one of the places which should not be missed. Bagan, situated on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River, 293 km south of Mandalay, is the most amazing site in Myanmar. Covering about 42 sq km and with over 2000 religious monuments which are in different sizes and shapes and were built between 11th to 13th Centuries AD, Bagan is the richest archaeological site in Southeast Asia. Tradition had it that Bagan was founded in 2nd Century AD. But it would be better to date the foundation of Bagan in AD 849. It was not until King Anawrahta who ascended to the throne in 1044 that Bagan rose to the golden era. It was Anawrahta who founded the First Myanmar Empire, carried out religious reforms by establishing pure Theravada Buddhism and made Myanmar historic period came into near-perfect light. But the downfall of Bagan met in 13th Century due to the invasion of Mongols. Bagan, the cradle of Myanmar culture, casts a spell over its visitors from which they could not escape: there’s nowhere, perhaps, a sight so striking as the view across the plain of Bagan. It is Bagan that impeccably offers you the unsurpassed holidays that you have never had before in your life time.

Mt. Popa, 60 km southeast of Bagan, is the oasis of the arid zone. It is also the extinct volcano which erupted in 442 B.C. The soil is naturally fertile so that medicinal plants, trees and fruits such as banana, custard, papaya and vegetables can be grown around the area. The champac flowers, the symbol of Mt. Popa, are also abundant. Standing completely alone above the low ridge of sandstone, it is one of the National Parks in Myanmar. It is believed to be the home of 37 Nats (spirits). Mount Popa is perhaps best known for the nearby stunningly picturesque Popa Taungkalat (table-mountain) which is a volcanic plug. There are 777 steps of the stairway, once maintained by the hermit U Khanti, to the summit of Taungkalat from which the view is breath-taking. As of the flora and fauna of Mount Popa one can visit sandal wood plantation and wildlife parks. In addition, one can do activities such as horse-riding, trekking etc.

Inle Lake, the second biggest natural lake in Myanmar, located 900 m above sea level surrounded by beautiful mountains of Shan plateau, is the top-end tourist destination in Myanmar. Famous for its leg-rowers, floating gardens and the villages built on stilt above the water, Inle Lake, with the length of 22 km and the width 11 km, is idyllic and unique. It is also the home land of the Intha tribe, many of whom live off the lake by farming, “floating gardens” made up of aquatic vegetation, composite foliage and soil which is staked to the lake bottom with bamboo poles. The lake is also well-known for its “rotating market held every five other days” with Shan ethnic people and many colourful hill tribes; its cottage factories that produce hand-woven silk and fabric. The highlight of the Lake is the most famous and venerated Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, which contains Buddha images that were believed to be made in Bagan Era. Intha are devout Buddhists so Phaung Daw Oo pagoda festival is the most majestic held in October. During the festival, the four out of five Buddha images, with great pageantry, do a round tour within the lake and it is very splendid.

The busiest part of Taunggyi is the Myoma market, a place where people from the environs flock once every five days to buy and sell their regional products. It is constantly crowded with people. Another interesting place to visit in Taunggyi is the cultural museum where show rooms of cultural objects, traditional dresses, customs and traditions of the different national races residing in Shan State can be seen. Hsipaw (pronounced Thibaw), about 200 km northeast of Mandalay, was once the centre of a small Shan state, the local capital of a Shan principality. Its legendary history goes back to year 58 B.C. The last Myanmar K ing Th ibaw (1875-85 AD) got his name from this town. The old wooden traditional “Haw”, palace of the Shan chieftain - was destroyed during the last World War, but a visit can be made to the modern Sawbwa's residence built during colonial times by Sawbwa Sao Ohn Kya who ruled Hsipaw from 1928 to 1938. The Haw is at the northern end of the town and the main Maha Myatmuni Pagoda is right at the southern end. The roads are parallel to the Namtu or Dokhtawaddy River. One can visit famous Bawgyo Pagoda, 8 km southwest of Hsipaw, a very Shan-style pagoda from the 14th century. Trekking to tribal villages from Hsipaw is the best option for foreign travellers.
