New Delhi: The India

Department (IMD)

will offer scholarships

to hundreds of

science postgraduates to attract them

towards meteorology and staff a

department that is facing nearly 33

percent human resource shortage.

”We are ready to give stipend for

the entire last year of the M.Sc

students. The aim is to attract them

to this branch of science,” Earth

Sciences Minister Prithviraj Chavan

said at the 135th foundation day of

IMD here on January 15, 2010.

The minister also inaugurated the

installation of a super-computing

device at the IMD headquarters here,

which will improve the accuracy of

short and medium term weather

forecasting.

Civil Services Prelims exam

replaced by Aptitude Test from

2011

New Delhi: The Union Public

Service Commission (UPSC) has

decided to overhaul the civil services

examination from next year, as the

aspirants are likely to face a different

pattern of examination.

Replacing the existing preliminary

examination which shortlisted

candidates for the main exam, it will

now be replaced with Civil Services

Aptitude Test (CSAT), in which they

will have to appear in two objective-

type papers having special emphasis

on testing their ‘aptitude for civil

services’ as well as on ‘ethical and

moral dimension of decision-

making.’

Both these papers will be given equal

weightage and will substitute the one

common paper (general awareness)

and one optional paper (any

particular subject of choice) which

emphasized on subject knowledge.

Sibal finally nods for common

science, maths syllabus from 2011

New Delhi: The Union Human

Resource Development (HRD)

Minister Kapil Sibal announced on

February 16, 2010 from the 201 1

academic year, all school boards

across India will have a common

curriculum in science and maths for

classes XI and XII, to give students

a level playing field and help them

in taking competitive examinations.

There will be a core curriculum in

the science stream (both science and

mathematics) for all school boards

across India. This will be

implemented in 2011,” Sibal told

reporters.

The recent changes in the visa

rules of several countries (UK,

Australia, USA) are part of their

government’s crack down on

potential abuse of the system.

While all countries want foreign

students to come and study, no one

wants to encourage the illegal entry

of immigrants.

UK visa changes:

ñ From 1st Feb, 2010 students

will have to schedule an

appointment through an email

before attending visa application

centres in India to submit a Tier

4 student visa application.

ñ UK has implemented the

Point Based System (PBS)

whereby; only tier 4 list of institutes

can accept international students

thereby, reducing the overall

number of institutes in UK.

ñ UK institutes henceforth will

be the sponsor, and student will

need to obtain 40 points from their

visa, 30 points of which will be

obtained on Confirmation of

Acceptance for studies (CAS) from

their prospective sponsor. The

remaining 10 points will depend

on funds availability.

ñ Prospective student need to

get an IELTS score of minimum

4.0 in each band for all below

foundation degree level, including

those coming to study English

language.

ñ Students will not be able to

bring their dependants for a course

of 6 months or less under tier 4.

ñ Student registered for a below

degree level course can now work

only for 10 hours per week from

earlier 20 hours per week. Moreover,

dependent under this category can

no longer be able to work. There has

been no change for student registered

for degree level programs.

ñ Biometric data collection

includes a digital finger scan of all

ten fingers and a digital photograph.

Australian visa changes:

ñ Upgrading the interview

program to confirm the genuineness

of the applicant and to check the

financial capacity

ñ In student visa, living cost and

evidence of funds have been

increased to AUSD 18,000 per year

from AUSD 12000 per year from 1st

January, 2010.

ñ e-Visa access has been either

removed or restricted for agents

where there has been evidence of

fraud or inactivity. Students are

advised to apply for visa minimum

12 weeks prior to start of the

program.

ñ IELTS score of minimum two

years will be valid for student visa.

USA Visa change:

ñ Starting Feb 1, 2010, USA has

replaced DS-156,157 and 158

applicable to one electronic form DS-

160.

ñ It is important that you save

the online DS-160 form in regular

interval to avoid loss of data.

ñ The new online visa form

requires you to upload the visa

photograph. The photograph must

be minimum 2 inches by 2 inches,

plain background and having 300

dots per inch or 300 pixels per inch.

The digital photograph should be

saved as a high quality (low

compression) JPEG file.

ñ The applicant will get a

confirmation page upon

completion of the DS-160 having

CEAC barcode

ñ Schedule an appointment

through VFS using CEAC bar code

and HDFC bar code (received by

paying visa fees)

Canada Visa changes :

In contrast to other countries,

Canada is making it easier for

international students to study and

find employment. Canada has

introduced in India a pilot based

Student Partners Program (SPP) in

May 2009 with twenty government

funded Canadian colleges with an

aim to improve its visa approval

rate for colleges.

The SPP test is modeled for

expecting the student visa process

and delivering higher approval

rates while maintaining program

integrity. Students interested in

applying through SPP need to

achieve an overall 6 band in IELTS,

and not below 5.5 bands in each

module; student academic

percentage in 10 th, 12 th or in

Bachelors should be minimum

50%.

Student who has received an offer

from Canadian community

colleges under SPP and with study

loan from approved nationalized

or multinational banks of India has

witnessed a high visa success rate.

The program has received excellent

response and it has been able to

meet its objective of improving the

overall student visa success rate

for Canadian colleges. The

Careers in Advertising

Advertising field offers a range of

lucrative, interesting careers. The job

in this field is categorized into two,

Executive and Creative.

Executive side includes Client

Servicing, Market Research and

Media Research. Creative side

consists of copywriters, script-

writers, visualizers, photographers

and typographers.

The executive department

understands client needs, finds new

business and retains existing

business. It also selects the

appropriate media, analyzes timing

and placement of advertisements and

negotiates the financial aspects of

the deal.

Creative department creates the

advertisement copy. They verbalize

The Client Servicing department is

the link between the client and the

agency. It involves a study of the

client, the product and the market;

an analysis of consumer behaviour

Connotation of a Cup of Coffee

Someone asked me what comes to

mind when you hear the word

Coffee? In the bubble above my

head, I flickered the book of my

life and ran through it, scanning

for the word Coffee, and here it

is: grandmother’s stories on the

grounds left in the cup,

grandfather’s WWII souvenir from

his friend in the army, a something

17 oz. can of Mehmet Efendi

Turkish Coffee placed on his table

in his study. My high school days

during exams my mom made me

cups of coffee to keep me up,

hmmm.... during college days a

coffee shop, my new college

friends took me to; Beverly’s coffee

colored eyes, Joanne’s coffee

colored hair,Andy’s coffee colored

lipstick, my school ice hockey team

jersey, the logo of my first vacation

job was in coffee color, oh oh oh

on a second thought had I not being

asked what the word coffee bring to

mind I wouldn’t have known that

my life in a flicker would be a sepia

colored film.

Seriously, Coffee: the aroma, the

dates over a cup of coffee, the nights

I’ve stayed up working on my first

book, “hold my hand”, the times

when I was tummy sick, mom made

those strong black non

sugar filter coffee. My

first break up was over

coffee, Cassandra

always loved her latte

with the so feminine

latte art, I remember the

first date she asked for

a heart shape art, I know it is so

cliché but then you need to cream

your heart (then, Cassandra). To me

it is like having a tattoo on your

coffee, I was glad she couldn’t see

the bubble above my head. Ok

people you may have noticed the

soap of my thought has so much

froth to bubble about. So now what

you may be wondering happened to

Cassandra well like all good things

come to an end she ordered a latte

with an art of broken heart on it.

Today when I look around, I am

amazed to know that lot and what

happens over a cup of coffee. Many

relationships build over coffee the

most popular one is that of the lovers.

The amazing thing is the statistics

of cups of coffee in a relationship.

The rate of frequency

reflects the life of

relationship. The ones

with frequent over-the-

coffee meet ups were

like easy to understand

that it wasn’t them who

needed the stimulant but

their relationship, and an easy

prediction - a broken heart latte art

coffee. While there were couples

who made their coffee and had it

too, were the ones who put every

bit of love within to the coffee

(intended allegory) of their life.

How I wish I could tell people the

coffee you choose to have reflects

who and what you are. I like my

coffee hot, strong, fresh and pure.

Somehow, I find coffee avec du

lait like doing something just the

opposite of having coffee, the metal

black coffee with snow white milk,

to me it is like sipping a coffee

flavoured milk. Coffee is one of

the openly and widely used

stimulants. I understand with things

taking its toll, coffee needs to come

into play. We all need a push, when

the force lies within then push it

up with a cup of coffee.

I have rephrased one of my own

quotes; Coffee will take you this

far, Interest that far and Passion

very far. Originally, the word

M o t i v a t i o n

was used in

place of

Coffee. If you

were watching

carefully you

may still

notice - It all

begins over a

cup of Coffee.

question: Why advertising? – As

a career option.

Advertising – An Introduction

Advertising is a service industry

geared towards the communication

of information and ideas to and on

behalf of others. Advertising is the

means of informing as well as

influencing the general public to

buy products or services through

visual or oral messages. A product

or service is advertised to create

awareness in the minds of potential

buyers. Some of the commonly

used media for advertising are T.V.,

radio, websites, newspapers,

magazines, bill-boards, hoardings

etc. As a result of economic

liberalization and the changing

social trends advertising industry

has shown rapid growth in the last

decade.

A career in advertisement is quite

glamorous and at the same time

challenging with more and more

agencies opening up every day.

Whether its brands, companies,

personalities or even voluntary or

religious organizations, all of them

use some form of advertising in

order to be able to communicate

with the target audience. The salary

4. Sentence Simplification

questions (0 to 1 questions per set)

This type of question needs

you :

To choose from the four choices a

sentence that is similar in meaning

to the highlighted text in the passage.

One of the four choices is the

paraphrased sentence similar in

meaning to the highlighted text.

E.g. Which of the following best

expresses the necessary information

in the highlighted sentence?

5. Inference Questions (0 to 2

questions per set)

This type of question needs you: To

comprehend the passage, and to draw

a conclusion to the implied text.

E.g. Which of the following can be

inferred from paragraph 1 about X?

Make sure you understand the logical

implications made by the author.

6. Rhetorical Purpose questions

(0 to 2 questions per set)

This type of question needs you: To

understand why the author has

presented a particular piece of

information in a particular place or

manner. This type of question checks

your comprehension skills on the

rhetorical function of a statement or

paragraph as it relates to the rest of

the passage. One of the question of

this type can also be on to identify

on how does one paragraph relates

to another.

E.g. Why does the author mention

….this?

The author discusses this….in order

to?

This type of question typically

focuses on the logical links between

sentences and paragraphs.

7. Insert Text question (0 to 1

questions per set)

This type of question needs you: to

take the sentence given in the

question and try to fit it in the right

place in the passage. You will be

given a sentence and asked where

in the passage it would best fit. You

need to understand the logical and

grammatical connection of this

sentence with the place you would

insert the text.

Look at the four square [ ] that

indicate where the following

sentence could be added to the

passage.

This made it easy for the artists to

paint and display them for the rest

of the cave dwellers.

Where would the sentence best

fit ?

Click on the square [ ] to add

the sentence to the passage, and then

you have a paragraph of 4 to 5

sentence at the end of each sentence

you need to insert the sentence in

question in the paragraph given.

8. Prose Summary (0 to 1 questions

per set)

This type of question needs you: to

understand and recognize the major

ideas and relative importance of

information in a passage.

You will be given 6 answer choices

from which you need to choose 3

answer choices that express most

important ideas in the passage. This

question is worth 2 points.

9. Fill in a table (Classification

and Categorization).

This type of question needs you: to

understand and recognize major

ideas and other important

information from the passage.

You will be given a partly completed

classified table; you need to go to

the answer choices drag and drop

the answer options mentioned below

into the corresponding blanks in the

table.

The space constraint deprives me to

get elaborate on the last three

questions. I could therefore only give

a gist or a snippet on these questions.

With this I end the TOEFL Reading

Section.

The area of the sector or the wedge

or the pie is the fraction of the

TOTAL AREA of the circle covered

by the pie. The fraction of the total

area of the circle covered by the

sector is the ratio of the central angle

of the sector to the total angle of a

circle, 360 degrees.

EXAMPLE : Find the area of

sector with central angle 45

Rs.1,00,000 crore by 2011. The

need for advertising professionals

therefore will increase to fulfill the

growing requirements of the

advertising sector.

Advertising is considered to be a

glamorous business with high

expense accounts, creativity, talent

hunting, celebrity endorsements,

brain storming and a continuous

search for innovative concepts and

ideas.

People in the advertising business

are talented and they work in teams

- they generally have out-standing

communications and presentation

skills apart from vivid imagination,

ingenuity and out of the box

thinking. A career in advertising

can be both intense and satisfying

apart from the high pressure of

meeting deadlines and adaptability

to work routinely for long hours.

A typical advertising agency is

divided into planning, creative,

production, media, market

research, account services and

administration. The creative

essence of photography.

Eligibility & Course Areas

Educational

Most advertising agencies recruit

candidates with a formal

management or advertising/mass

communication qualification.

Preference is given to MBAs for

positions in the market research,

client servicing and media planning

departments. In the creative

department, on the other hand, a

general BA with a command of

language communication plus

knowledge of designing packages

like Photoshop, coral draw or fine

arts is the requirement.

There are also specialized courses

in advertising/mass communication

at diploma level and post graduate

level for which basic qualification

is graduation.

Personal attributes

Basic qualities like creativity, flair

for writing and ability to translate

ideas into a visual format. One

should be people’s person, a team

player, and good interpersonal skills.

University East Bay?

The popular programs are

Undergraduate Majors in

Business, Liberal Studies,

Psychology, Biology, Criminal

Justice, and Sociology. All our

campuses are known for

Business & Computer Science

programs at graduate &

undergraduate level.

3. Do international students

qualify for scholarships for

degree programs and which are

they?

Being a state funded university,

our fees are low. We offer limited

financial assistance. The demand

for education in California is very

strong and hence universities

don’t need to provide discounts

& scholarships. We have 20,000

support system for them to meet

the expenses.

About Advertising

Advertising involves the process

wherein a message is designed so

as to promote a product, a thought,

an idea or even a service.

Nature of Work

Contrary to popular belief,

Advertising is a difficult career.

The working hours are long, jobs

are demanding, personal lives are

nonexistent and starting salaries are

low. The sheer work pressure keeps

an individual from getting affected

by the abundant glamour all

around. But the rewards when they

arrive are worthwhile.

Job Positions

Job positions and earnings in an

agency vary with its size and

turnover. Job positions given here

may be considered as of a fairly

good agency. Remuneration

package is proportional to proven

career record. Positions vary from

General Manager, Creative

Director, Copywriter, Copy

Training, Finishing Artists, Media

Manager, Traffic Manager, Art

Director, Print Production Manager

etc. The salary varies from

Rs. 4,000 to 1,45,000 per month

depending on the designation.

POSITIVE ASPECTS

Effective communication skills is

a must

Excellent copy writing and

presentation skills are a must for

the entry level advertising.

Creativity - a must factor

A successful advertiser is the one

who can create a commercial

message that the consumer will

remember.

Globally Oriented Players Needed

The field of advertising is one of

the most global business career

options available.

Online Oriented People Wanted

The burgeoning world of web

advertising and e-commerce is

injecting new, dynamic growth into

a traditional field. Look for huge

opportunities in designing,

arranging and selling online

advertising.

Be a Team Player

The ability to work in a team or

to perform individual excellence

is important because you will have

the opportunity to do both.

You Get Satisfaction / Satisfaction

involved.

There aren’t many jobs which

allow your creativity and strategies

to come to life to be observed by

thousands or even millions of

people. Work results are very

apparent !

NEGATIVE ASPECTS

Difficulties in Handling Clients

Advertising and PR jobs require

the individual to work closely with

a client base who can be difficult

and demanding.

Not for the faint of heart

Continual deadlines in advertising

can cause high levels of stress and

pressure. The advertiser may have

to work all night or weekends to

ensure a presentation is properly

prepared to meet a pressing

deadline.

Competition is Bloody

Competition for beginning

advertising jobs is intense. You

must be willing to start at the

bottom and work your way up. An

internship in the advertising field

is a MUST! Many of these

internships will not pay so be

prepared to struggle financially.

Don’t Expect to Get Rich

Starting pay is probably going to

be low. Remember, there are a lot

of people that want that

advertising job and the advertisers

know it. Be willing to start for low

experience you gain salary.

Even though the worth of an

Advertising agency is determined

by the quality of creatives work

and its effect on the brand’s growth,

the coordination between the client

Today in this era of competition

how can pre-banking exams remain

untouched? As the banking

industry in India is witnessing

change the competition exams to

get into the banks have opened the

doors of possibilities to make one’s

career in banking. On the other

hand there are many competitive

banking aspirants deviate from the

competition due to unavailability

of resources, guidance or assistance

to guide them in this career.

Let us acquaint ourselves to the

various aspects as elaborated below

of the examinations:

1. The pre-banking examinations

are conducted for various

public & private sector banks

by IBPS (Institute for Banking

& Personnel Selection).IBPS sets

the question paper for banking

recruitments for various

designations.

2. Banks come out with detailed

advertisements throughout the

year as when vacancies arise.

They do so through print &

electronic media. The application

form can be either downloaded

from the Bank’s website or is

readily available across various

railway book stalls. Aspirants are

advised to purchase such

applications only from

authorized sources in their own

interest.

3. Eligibility : In the present

scenario, many banks often set

minimum percentile at

graduation level to be the eligible

criteria for the examinations.

Candidate need to have the

required degree & should have

attained prescribed age as on the

date of application.

4. The examinations can be grouped

as objective & descriptive tests:

A : Objective Tests : These tests

often have four subjects viz.,

a) Quantitative Aptitude,

b) Reasoning Abilities / Test of

reasoning, c) English, d) General

Awareness / General Knowledge.

However, clerical cadre

examinations has a slight variation

like: the replacement of General

Awareness by Clerical Aptitude &

inclusion of subjects like

Psychometric Tests, Computers,

Marketing, etc., Banks are at liberty

to decide over combination of the

above subjects & also inclusion or

exclusion of subjects.

Each subject carries 50 marks for

clerical cadre examinations;

whereas, In case of officer cadre

examinations the above subjects

remain the same with the exception

of Reasoning Ability/Test of

reasoning carries 75 marks.

The scoring in subjects except

English is the marks obtained in the

entrance test. English is reckoned

only for passing. Point to be noted,

objective tests carry 0.25 negative

marking for officer cadre though,

clerical tests do not lay down any

such conditions.

Through the call letters bank inform

the candidates about the subjects and

backbone to the advertising agency

and its various functions.

According to Rohan Mascarenhas,

former strategic planning director –

Grey Worldwide (India) Private Ltd.

‘Client servicing is the 2nd toughest

job after god’s. You have to keep all

the people happy at all the time, the

boss, the finance head, the brand

manager, the creative team, the

planner & last but not the least,

yourself.’ Client Servicing

professionals are like partners in the

client’s success stories.

The role of a good client servicing

person entails:

Identifying opportunities to

build the client’s brand and

market share and delivering

them

Assisting in creating a

superior advertising

Ensuring smooth internal co-

ordination with allied

functions – creativity, media

films, studio and production

Maintaining client contact and

all the relevant documentation

Internal projects coordination

and management

Selling of Advertising creative

work and plans to clients

Financial management

The main aim of client servicing

begins with the agency to pitch the

client, develop & maintain business

relations with them. Aclient servicing

executive / team strategize and plan

the advertising process of the product

for the client. The client first gives

a brief about his demands and

expectations about advertising his

brand. The client servicing executive

explains the requirements to the

creative team and ensures that work

is done as per client brief and presents

the same to the client. A client

servicing executive has to handle an

account (product) in an ad agency

and keeps a continuous update with

the marketing of the product i.e.

growth, sales, competitors

advertising, their promotional moves

so they can plan their strategies

accordingly.

only 10 minutes every workday, that

savings will total 42 extra hours

gained by the end of a year. That

would be like having a 53-week year

and would result in one heck of an

increase in productivity—all from

just 10 minutes per day. Here are

some ways to save time:

Get organized: The average person

spends 150 hours per year looking

for things. That’s almost a full week.

Follow these three suggestions

from Peter F. Drucker: Record your

time. Don’t count on your memory

for an accurate assessment of how

you spend your time. Manage your

time. Drucker said, “Until we can

manage time, we can manage

nothing else.’’ Plan your time, but

also time your plan. Consolidate

your time. Group chores to increase

efficiency.

Don’t fall for these most common

excuses for not planning time:

Students, I hope you find the pointers

handy. Before I end I’d like to quote.

BC Forbes, “Think not of yourself

as the architect of your career but

as the sculptor. Expect to have to

do a lot of hard hammering &

chiseling & scraping & polishing.”

Most people waste time the same

way every day. Robert Benchley was

bullish on human determination

when he said, “Anyone can do any

amount of work… provided it isn’t

what he’s supposed to be doing at

the time.” The following thought was

found in the pages of Boardroom

Reports: “ALL you can do with time

is spend it or waste it. Find the best

ways to spend available time and

the appropriate amount of time for

each task. Concentrate on the best

ways to spend time, instead of

worrying about saving it.”

In a recent survey, business managers

blamed their own lack of time

management for 92% of the failures

among those under their supervision.

This raises the ominous question,

“How do managers waste so much

time?’’ several reasons top the list:
