Activity: Dot-to-Dot

Make a Twisted Friendship Bracelet!

Connect the dotsand color the picture to make a home for the bluebird!

Thanks!

Cut some lengths of string about three feet long. Put them all together and hold one end of the group, while your buddy holds the other end.

Start twisting the strings together.

When the string is twisted very tightly, have your buddy hold her end tight while you hold your end with one hand, and pull the middle of the string with a finger on your other hand. Don’t pull too hard! Bring your end of twisted string close to your buddy’s hands.

Make sure your buddy is holding tight, then let go of the string only with the hand holding the middle! Hang onto the end you twisted! Watch the string twist around itself!Smooth out the twists and tie the bracelet around your buddy’s wrist. Now make another one for you!

A journey from seed to flower

Spring is a time for flowers! Look around when you are outside and see all the flowers growing. How did they get there? All flowers come from seeds. Here is how a plant grows from a seed to a flower:

First, a flower starts as a seed. Seeds are very small and don’t look very much like the flowers they will become. Seeds need

good soil, sunlight, and water. Then they will start to grow.

Next, if the seed gets enough water and sunlight, something amazing will happen! The seed will start to sprout. A little green stem will push out of the seed and start to grow above the ground. Roots will also grow below the ground.

After the plant grows buds, the buds will open and each one will become a flower. When you walk outside this Spring and Summer, you can think of the long journey each one took from a tiny seed to a beautiful flower!

If the seed keeps getting good sunlight and water, it will keep growing. The plant will grow above the ground and get taller. It will grow leaves and will start to grow flowers in little bunches called buds. The plant

will also grow below the ground. Its roots will grow longer.

What is a Program Aide? Program Aides are Cadette assisitants who help lead younger girls in exciting Girl Scout programming. To become a Program Aide you have to complete the following three steps in this order: 1) earn a Leader in Acton award, 2) attend a council program aide training (see page 13) or check out our program aide workshop kit to do the training with your troop or service unit, 3) volunteer at six program sessions (troop, service unit, or council programs).

All of the volunteer opportunities on this page count toward your six program sessions required to earn your PA award! If you're not sure if being a PA is something you want to pursue, why not come and volunteer at one of these events to get a feel for what being a PA is all about?

Friendship by Peggy Foerch

That word has been stretched and manipulatedso much that when one says,“You are my friend”it can mean anything from an acquaintance, to confidante, to a lover. Most of the time it meanssomeone to hang around with, to have lunch with, to have fun with.It means “we get along.”You may have plenty of peoplewith whom you get along, but a true friend is more.A true friendship begins with trust, caring, responsibility, listening. Not suddenly –but bit by bit, little by little, slowly. It means taking chances, putting yourself and your feelings on the line. And it grows – through the bad times as well as the good –until the bonds can never be broken. Not miles between you, not time, not even death. You may only have two or three such friends in a lifetime.Treasure them. They are forever.

Creating Really Awesomely Fantastical Things

Materials:• Embroidery Floss aka Friendship Bracelet String• Seed Beads at least three colors Tip: With seed bead sizing, the rule is the larger the number, the smaller the bead. We used size 11/0.• Scissors• Beading Needle• Crimping Beads• Crimping Pliers• Pen and Paper (optional)

Directions:1. Pick a saying that means something important to you or the friend that you are making the bracelet for. Use the Morse code chart below to code your saying. Tip: Some people find it handy to write it out ahead of time, so grab a pen and paper!

2. Cut a piece of string that’s longer than you think you’ll need – you can always cut off the extra at the end. Thread your embroidery floss onto your beading needle and bead your message onto the string. O Use one color to represent dots. O Use another color to represent dashes. O Use a third color to show separations between letters and words. Use one bead between letters and three between words.

For example, “HI THERE” would read: O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O

3. Use your third color bead to add spacers on both ends of the bracelet. Tip: If the bracelet is too long for your wrist, don’t worry, just wrap it around twice and add extra beads on both ends!

4. Add a crimp bead to each end of your beads to keep them in place. Use special bead crimping pliers to squeeze them so they stay put.

5. There are lots of ways to finish a friendship bracelet, but we picked the sliding knot version: • Line up your bracelet ends so they are pointing opposite directions. • Cut a piece of embroidery floss and lay it behind the overlapped ends of your bracelet. Tie an overhand knot. Tip: Don’t pull it super tight though, you want the bracelet strings to be adjustable. • Make a P with your string with the string laying on top of the others. Take the end of the string that is perpendicular to the other strings and wrap it under the other three strings and and up through the hole of the P. Pull the new knot tight, but not super tight. • Repeat by making a new P, wrapping that string around, under, and through again, then pulling semi-tight. • When your slip knot is long enough (there’s no right length, but make sure you’ve done at least 10 knots) trim the extra string that you were using to tie the knots.

6. For a fun bit of flair, slide crimping beads on the end of the bracelet ends. Decide how much extra string you want and cut off the extra, then crimp the beads tighlty in place. This will keep the strings from pulling all the way through your slide knot.

Secret Message BraceletsThis really awesomely fantastical project uses Morse code to make bracelets with secret messages in their seemingly random pattern.

Environment• One girl got her high school into recycling. She picked up over a ton of recyclable paper over the year by putting bins in each classroom and training teachers, etc. When she graduated, she had made arrangements for the local disposal company to take over.

• A girl added a large butterfly garden to a local park that had no flowers. She researched the plants, got donations from local garden centers, and built butterfly roosting houses.

The Arts• A Girl Scout Senior wrote a play designed to teach young children about life as an African-American girl in the late 1900’s. She used her work to develop an interactive program to be presented by a local group of historical performers.

• One girl organized a community youth choir to perform at orphanages, veteran centers and retirement homes.

Helping Others• Another Senior Scout organized a drive to have old cell phones donated to domestic violence victims so they could call 911 when in a domestic violence situation and developed a small wallet-sized card to be used for a cab ride to a shelter with no questions asked.

• One girl with Bolivian parents did a school supplies drive for impoverished Bolivian children in the highlands. She collaborated with a Bolivian women’s club to arrange the delivery.

History• A girl sewed costumes for an elementary school’s Pioneer Week activities. She researched patterns with a local historical group, and got donations to cover cost of materials.

• Another girl worked with a local historical society to bring severely outdated records up to date and to respond to public genealogy search requests.

Science & Technology• One girl created a web site for Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida, Inc.

• Another girl gave more than four months of service to the Black Forest Observatory creating a computer database of all the school districts in the United States so that educational literature from the observatory could be mailed to schools to help students learn about space.

Do you need some ideas for a Gold Award Project? Below is a sampling of projects done by Girl Scouts from around the country within the last few years.

I started my Girl Scout journey in 1999 as a Brownie in 2nd grade.   Meetings were always fun, but what I loved most was camp.  Whether it was day camp, Mom n Me, Dad n Me, troop camp, camporees, or resident camp, I loved experiencing new adventures with all different types of girls. There was always something to look forward to starting with learning the basics, becoming a PAL at day camp, or helping a Brownie troop with their first overnight. A love for teaching and being outdoors was sparked.

by Eric Schmidt, Google

Eric Schmidt outlines eight useful email tips that define the most effective people in his new book, How Google Works.

But his No. 1 tip is by far the most instructive:

“Respond quickly: There are people who can be relied upon to respond promptly to emails, and those who can’t. Strive to be one of the former. Most of the best — and busiest — people we know act quickly on their emails, not just to us or to a select few senders, but to everyone.”Even short messages, like “got it” help create a culture of efficiency and attentiveness. He continues:

“Being responsive sets up a positive communications feedback loop whereby your team and colleagues will be more likely to include you in important discussions and

decisions, and being responsive to everyone reinforces the flat, meritocratic culture you are trying to establish.”

Readers may be tempted to think that someone as wealthy and busy as Schmidt doesn’t respond to most everyone quickly, but in my own experience, successful people really do have this habit. In my career, I’m lucky to interact with very successful people on occasion. I am shocked at how quickly they respond. The most successful people I know usually respond within a day, if not an hour.

Professor Judy Olson at the University of California, Irvine, has done some interesting research about why this habit is so important. She told me that in mediums where people cannot see facial expression or hear voice intonation, recipients tend to assume the worst.

Being responsive is one of the only ways in asynchronous messaging to signal that we do care about a person — even if it’s a short message. This helps build a culture of trust.

The rest of Schmidt’s email tips are outlined below (I’m paraphrasing for brevity’s sake):

1. Write short, non-flowery emails. “Every word matters.”

2. Clean out your inbox. “Any time you spend thinking about which items in your inbox you should attack next is a waste of time”

3. Handle email in a Last in First Out order, since older stuff often gets taken care of by itself.

4. Include other people in the conversation who might be useful.

5. Be sparing with BCC; sometimes it’s better not to hide information from others.

6. Don’t yell.

7. Track requests made to recipients by labeling them [like a Gmail tag]. If the message isn’t responded to, you can look at this category and then follow up. [My personal tip: I use the Mailbox app, which sends emails back to your inbox if they are not responded to in a specified time period.]

8. Make email searchable by forwarding notes to yourself with a few key words.

I am now a staff member for Ohio’s Heartland working in schools and

at camp. Girl Scouts helped me through high school and college by

providing opportunities for me to work with kids and helped

me to realize my calling was in teaching. Being an aid to

younger scouts was always something I could talk

about in a job interview or college application.

As I continue my journey with the Girl Scouts, there are still many things I look

forward to including leading my own troop and learning new skills.

We would love to hear from you about how Girl Scouts has influenced your life. Send your stories to [email protected] and one will be chosen for the next issue of your MyGSOH. It should be no longer than 200 words and if pictures are included, a picture release found at http://gsoh.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/PhotoReleaseMinors_2013_fillable_saveable.pdf must be attached.

Do you have a Then & Now’ story to share?
