If there was one Deepavali visual from Mylapore that caught the eyes of many people who were in the temple zone or got to see pictures of this, it was the well-lit gopurams of Sri Kapali Temple and on Sunday night. Fire cracker showers lit up the skies above the gopuram. ( Photo no.1).

That morning, the gods had been decorated with an alankaram for the festival occasion and the stream of people who visited was thick. ( Photo no.2).

In the neighbourhood, many families carried forward a tradition - preparing sweets and savouries. Kalyani Mu-ralidharan of Thiruvengadam Street, Mandaveli and Lak-shmi Vibhu of R. A. Puram were glad to share photos of their home-made sweets ( Photo no.3 and 4).

Late Sunday night, religious ceremonies began to unfold at the well-lit Universal Temple inside the Ram-akrishna Math in Mylapore. The annual kali puja got underway as people joined the bhajan group inside. (Photo no.5).

And for people who cannot do without a strong drink, they had to join the long queues outside the TASMAC liquor store located near the Thirumylai MRTS station’s main entrance in the sun and if they didn’t have a place to go to to celebrate, downed the liquor in the vicinity. (Photo no.6).

The Kali pooja at Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore during Deepavali is a one of a kind event. Held all through the night, the pooja is marked by bhajans, homa and prasadam distribution. This year, the pooja started late in the evening on Sunday, Oct. 27 and ended early next morning.

Swami Naravarananda, the PRO of the Math, says, “In Calcutta, Diwali is celebrated with a Kali pooja. We follow the same traditions here too. About ten days before the festival, sculptors from Calcutta come to Chennai to make a mud and clay idol of Goddess Kali for us. After the night long pooja, the visarjan rituals are done. The idol is then immersed in the sea the fol-lowing evening”.

He continues, “We have about 70 volunteers who are grouped according to the task they have been assigned. The items ( for the pooja) are very similar to those kept at marriages and so everything from kumkum, turmeric and flowers to bangles and vas-trams are arranged neatly by the volunteers there and offered to the deity.

We light up the whole temple with lamps and we have volunteers who work on that. In addition to that, we also have volunteers who bring people together for the bhajan sessions.”

Volunteers also help out with prasadam prepara-tion and distribution, he says. “At around 12 a.m. we distribute tea to the people who have gathered there. Prasadam is distributed in the morning at around 5 a.m. after the homa and the maha mangala aarti. Prasadam usually consists of kichidi (made with rice and moong dhal) and a sweet”.

V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

On a visit to the city of Santa Clara in San Francisco Bay Area in the USA, I had a chance to study the exemplary Public Library System there, and I am quite overawed and inspired by the way the local public library has become a pivot of community development.

I was given a chance to volunteer and work with the librarian, Nan Choi when she conduct-ed ESL conversation classes for adults, and was absolutely impressed with the wholeheart-ed and trustful participation and the discernible results from the participants - members of the community who required this input.

Several such programmes are held over the month, targeting specific groups of the local population to enable their development. This has led to a gradual overall raising of the bar when it comes to quality of life and knowledge in the population.

Several thoughtfully produced programmes are held regularly as part of the Children’s Services provided by the library. These imagi-natively conceived fun programmes include

story time activities for children (and their par-ents) as young as less than 2 years old , and 2.5 years old, older children and teens. Children of all ages can develop abilities for STEM, music, crafts, drawing, reading and even cooking as part of the Santa Clara community.

Older children can get tutorial help and guidance with the help of a computer App which is paid for by the library, but members can access for free. Guidance is provided to older students for writing the all important College Admission essay.

There are also several activities for families as a whole, including movie evenings.

For adults, special programmes are conducted at the Santa Clara Northside Branch Library, to enable skill development and on varied topics such as parenting and investments.

In addition, the library works with the Santa Clara Historical and Genealogical Society and maintains a heritage pavilion at one of their branches.

Back home in Chennai, I know there is a public library on the fringe of Warren Road just across the road from Mandaveli Railway Station. It may be a simplistic wish, but if at least a fraction of such programmes could be done here maybe we too could raise the bar and improve the quality of life and knowledge and awareness levels of the local population.

What local libraries can do: an American experience

Messy road under flyoverThe road below the flyover on Royapet-

tah High Road from the Valluvar statue side is always in a bad condition. There are no drains here so rainwater collects and messes up the area. The road is then full of pot holes.

We have seen agencies use motor pumps to pump out the water and even then vehicles find the road difficult to drive on. The issue has been taken to the local MLA and Commission-er of Chennai Corporation but the road remains in a mess often.

When Metrowater teams were in this area to relay the pipes in 2016 July the street was left in a shabby state. It needed us to push Chennai Corporation to relay this street. When streets are dug up, they are not relaid for

months. This was the case with V C Garden Road which was in a pathetic state for two years

Stagnant water can pose dangers here

The junction of Nallappan Street and T. S. V. Koil Street gets water-logged even after a drizzle. A TANGEDCO transformer is located in the junction. Adjacent to the trans-former there is a hand pump and people pump water by standing in rainwater.

It is important to get the water drained or else people here could be exposed to serious dangers.

- S. Vaidyanathan, Mylapore

Much noise, less action on ChitrakulamA lot of noise was made in the media and by politicians about the state of the Chitrakulam

and on attempts to clean it up before the monsoon and prepare the tank to receive rainwater. That seems to have been lots of loud noise and it ended at that.

Cleaning the tank is only the last thing to do if we are serious about using our tanks properly. RWH has to be enforced in the tank’s neighbourhood so that the ground water level goes up and this water also flows into this tank.

It is time some sober and committed civic-minded Mylaporeans worked on this issue.

If you are a history buff, focussed on Madras then you must be part of the FB community at Madras Local History Group.

Its members post photos and videos, maps and book extracts, manuscripts and web links for deep reading on everything to do with the city. And now and then, the content can draw you in deep.

Maps tell many stories. Soon after the deluge of 2015, a series of maps were posted on this page highlighting the water bodies since the 18th century, some even earlier.

And many members of the group looked closely at the flow of water across the city. The Mylapore scenario of old showed how the waters from what the English called the Long Tank, from the Nungambakkam - Mambalam area flowed eastwards and one flow led to the open grounds where now stands P. S. School and the adjacent playground, and then flowed into the local temple tanks.

Today, there are only two large temple tanks. Ages ago, there were over a dozen: perhaps not formal tanks but certainly water bodies.

And when a group member reposted what looked like a painting of the church in Luz, there was a water body in the foreground which led others in this com-munity to debate on whether the blue was symbolic or was related to a large pool of water in the vicinity of this church whose origins date to the 16th century.

We have a decent amount of water to stare at in the Mylapore zone after a good monsoon. But there is a lot that is happening underneath us. And it is taking place at various levels.

When the community at a sprawling campus of apartments close to the north banks of the Adyar got fed up with its bore wells pumping up saline water, it sought advice from an expert who asked the residents if they were ready to pick the bill for a new, open well. Many people laughed at the idea but some went with it and when the well was dug, water was struck some 30 feet below. It was potable. Enthused, another well was dug some 100 mts away - that too showed up water.

Clearly then, there is a lot that goes on below us at various levels.

Rain Centre’s Sekhar Raghavan tells me how he and his team dug up a dammed, old well in a plot where a bungalow stood and is now a block of apartments, how water slowly dripped into the well from all sides and how his men went in circles to locate the paths of the water streams.

So can open wells be a better or an additional option to borewells? Much depends on our data on the ground below and on the groundwater.

That is why Sekhar Raghavan suggests that a com-munity-driven study be made of the Mylapore zone. The idea is to identify houses and apartment blocks which have open wells of any size and use them to gauge water flow and levels across the year and in different colonies.

This data will help arrive at smarter decisions for communities who want to tap rainwater and to sink wells.

Sekhar and his team has been studying water levels across the city; he now wants to do it intensely in Mylapore.

If your campus has an open well of any kind, do share the info with us.

Store for organic veggiesBy Dheepti O. J.

Farm Fresh Hand-Picked Organics, a store that sells organic vegetables, fruits, and greens recently opened on R. K. Mutt Road, Mylapore. It also stocks organically-grown rice and millet varieties.

To avoid plastic usage, the foodstuff is stored in glass containers and cold-pressed oils, including groundnut and gingelly oil, are stored in glass dispensers.

With its warehouse at Chinmaya Nagar, this business has been in operation in the city since 2014.

Says Vivek Sundar, the owner of the

store, “We were supplying our products in bulk to various other markets. Now we have started a retail outlet.”

He says that they source most of their products from their farm in Theni and Thiruporur.”To procure good-quality organic veggies and fruits we have also collaborated with over 70 farmers in Tamil Nadu,” he says.

When onion prices soared recently, the store stocked Dindigul onions that were priced at Rs. 51 per kilo. People can also shop for their products online at https://www.farmfreshhandpicked.com.

For a long time now, the lane leading to the main gopuram of Sri Virupakseeswarar Temple in Mylapore ( it also has entry from the Bazaar Road side) is being used by tip-plers to have a drink.

They gather here late at night, some un-der window sills of the few residential blocks and enjoy their drinks.

Dozens of empty beer and liquor bottles are found dumped in all corners of the street, less used by temple-goers.

Residents say they have made a few complaints but they refrained from a formal one because they feared retribution.

Meanwhile, all those empty liquor bottles pile up yards away from the main door of the temple.

Every year, No-vember 2 is observed as All Souls Day by the Christian com-munity. The day is dedicated to prayer and remembrance of the dead. Masses are offered and people visit the graves of their loved ones, deco-rate them with flowers and burn candles.

The St. Mary’s Road Chennai Corporation cemetery in Mandaveli has been cleaned up for this religious event which draws a large number of people, to mark the day.

But one issue that bothers the people who manage this place is the lack of space to bury the dead of the Christian community.

This graveyard is being maintained by Our Lady of Guidance Church, R.A. Puram since 1996. The Cem-etery User’s Forum is headed by Fr. Y. F. Bosco who is the president. The other office bearers are Joseph Naveen of CSI Tamil Church, San Thome who is the vice president, T. Joseph Julius of Our Lady of Guid-ance Church who is the secretary and Jude Mangalraj of Our Lady of Visitation Church, Abhiramapuram who is the treasurer.

Some Rs 1.50 lakhs is spent every year towards the expenses for the All Souls Day services. The Forum has arranged to clear the wild growth inside the cemetery and has installed CCTV cameras for security purposes.

Chennai Corporation helped for proper illumination of the cemetery.

The Forum now seeks contributions from the public towards this service.- Report by Juliana Sridhar
