provide them security.”This information, he

says is being collected for a report to be submitted to the Madras High Court.

Recently, the court had asked the civic body to submit this report along with a few other details. The report, the police officer says will be used to plan the con-struction of the fish market for the fishermen hawking on the sandy side of Loop Road.

The civic body has planned to construct the market at Nochinagar, and

then shift the hawkers there. Says a Corpora-tion official attached to zone 9, “The fish hawk-ing is affecting vehicu-lar movement on Loop Road. Hence, we have been asked to shift them to a market.”

However, the fish hawkers, who are mostly women say that Loop Road is their tra-ditional zone and they would not move from there. Said a fishseller of Nochikuppam , “This Loop Road is ours. If

we move to some mar-ket away from road we will lose our business. We will not shift from here in any case.”

As of now, fish hawking continues but the tension is palpable here.

Senior cost accountant and company secretary, R. N. Ratnam passed away on February 5.

He was a former president of the Madras Management Association, was a leading consultant in the business world, played an active role in Tamil Nadu cricket and was a passionate Carnatic music rasika.

Ratnam studied at P. S. High School, then at St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchi for a year before graduating from Vivekanan-da College, Chennai. He then did his articleship at Fraser & Ross following his studies in chartered accountancy.

He was the first Indian chief accountant in an English-owned company – E.I.D. Parry. He played a vital role in the conversion of E.I.D.Parry to an Indian company and that was a time when the government control was much tighter.

He rose to become deputy managing director of E. I. D. Parry. Later, he was with a Hong Kong company. He had moved to Hong Kong in the 1980s. In a corporate case when he had to give evidence, the judge was amazed at his memory of numbers even without the aid of any notepaper, his family recalled.

He was perhaps one of the senior-most chartered accountants in the country when he passed away.

He was a member of the Association of Company Secretar-ies and served as president of Madras Management Association (MMA). Ratnam served in top positions in other bodies too.

Family members said he was an avid sportsman and played cricket, squash, golf and also rowed. He was the treasurer of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA).

Said Prabha Sridevan, retired judge of Madras High Court and a niece in a tribute she wrote, “He was devoted to his parents almost bordering on bhakti. We were ten, his sisters’ children and almost all of us have spent a considerable time with mama and mami in the house on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai. In our minds, mama and mami were inseparable and she did exactly what he wanted unquestioningly. He was a gem of an uncle, a real ratnam.”

Ratnam’s father was U. S. Ramasundaram, Suptg. Engineer, PWD and his mother was Rajam, daughter of the celebrated law-yer T. R. Venkatarama Sastri. ( Ramasundaram is credited with having built 13 aerodromes across south India in about a year’s time in the colonial era as the British prepared for World War II).

He leaves behind wife Sumitra Ratnam, and sisters Sarada Venkataramani, Meenakshi Sivaramakrishnan, Kamala Ratnam and Lakshmi Balasubramanian.

The family’s address: No.8, 5th Street, Dr. Radhakrishnan Road, Mylapore. Phone: 2811 1781.- Content for the tribute was shared by Prabha Sridevan

V. Sanjeevi, 86 years, who retired as Assistant Head Master and Thamizh pandit of P. S. Hr Sec School, Mylapore passed away on Feb.5.

SNAPSHOTS OFTHE TEPPAM FEST

12

It was a visual delight for devotees as the teppam made rounds around Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple tank on the three days of this festival ( Fab.8 to 10).

On Day Two and on Day Three of the teppam, Lord Singaravelar and his consorts Valli and Deivanai were placed on the float that was adorned with colourful serial lights, banana trees and flowers.

Earlier, on Monday evening, water was pumped into the tank to increase the water level. The float made nine rounds around the tank. Unlike the past two days, as it was a working day on Monday, the crowd was small. However, as the teppam started making a few rounds, it got bigger.

Dozens of police personnel and fire and rescue personnel were deployed for security purposes to prevent any untoward incident. The temple’s gopuram and tank’s surroundings have been illuminated for the celebration.

Snack and toys stalls and mobile playthings were set up by hawkers on South Mada Street, creating a village fair look here.

Play badminton indoors at this new facility

By Our Staff Reporter

Shuttler, a new badminton facility with six courts opened recently at Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore.

Spread across 10,000 sq ft, the wooden surfaced court makes this place one of the largest dedicated badminton facility in Chennai, says Alagappan Meyyappan of Shuttler.

This is the eighth sports venue of Tiki Taka, a collective that provides rooftop football facilities in Chennai. They also have facilities for basketball and cricket located elsewhere in the city.

Insulation sheets are fitted on top of the courts to absorb excess heat. The sports arena is also equipped with separate changing rooms and restrooms for men and women.

It also has a space for warm-up exercises. Luz-based couple Prahlad and Lakshmi Palaniappan are the promoters of the facility.

Says Lakshmi Pala-niappan, “In 2015, my hus-band Prahlad, who is also a football player launched our first sports venue when he realised that the Corporation’s playgrounds were unsuitable for pro-fessional players.”

The badminton court can be booked on an hourly basis. The price is Rs.800 per hour. Shuttler also provides badminton coaching for women and children between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The coaching fee is Rs.4000 for attending classes five days a week.

A new filter coffee joint has come up at Kutchery Road, near the Mylapore Head Post office. It is a franchise of Grind Coffee House located at C. P. Ramaswamy Road, Alwarpet.

Two friends, Jyothi and Aravind opened the joint when they realised this area did not have a dedicated shop for filter coffee.

Says Jyothi, “We use only full cream milk and coffee powder procured from the coffee estates at Coorg, Karnataka to make the coffee.”

Salt cookies, kara thattai, samosa, Osmania peanut cook-ies and cold coffee varieties are also sold here. Snacks like vegetable puffs and paneer tikka puff have already become popular here.

Says Jyothi, who is a yoga instructor and runs a private travel agency, “The snacks are prepared fresh at my house in Krishnaswamy Street, Alwarpet and then sent to the shop.”

Coffee is priced at Rs.18. The shop is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Located at 46, Kutchery Road, Mylapore.

V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A

We ordered a plate of bondas. Sridhar said he would like just idlis. Both of us were hungry. When the food arrived we traded a bonda and a idli and lapped up the delicious coconut chutney and the sweetish sambhar.

We were at the popular Abhinandan restaurant of Hotel Ashoka in Egmore. We were there to catch up with a school-mate, Radha we had not met for ages. She had come in from Dubai and was very keen to meet a few of us. So we decided on this place.

It is a place we had grown up with. In school, we would scamper across to have our fill of iced drinking water. And if we had some pocket money to spare, buy a bar of chocolate or a small pack of lozenges in the hotel’s little store, next to the hair-dresser.

Radha soon joined us after a drive across the city that took almost an hour. And the meet came alive when another classmate, Jamal joined us.

Now, Jamal has this habit of carrying a large plastic bag with him whenever we are to meet a classmate after a long break. In that crumpled bag are dozens of photos - some black and white, some in faded color. Some post-card in size, some 5 x 7s and some large ones. They are all photos that feature our classmates - in school and outside.

They are not captioned. So Jamal brings each photo alive, spicing up his backgrounders with tidbits that ring a bell or makes us cringe or roll in laughter. Now, many of us have seen all these photos but we are all ears when someone in the group recalls an anecdote that seems ‘all new’ to some of us.

That evening, there was a new album in Jamal’s plastic bag. A small album of photos shot at his wedding. A mix of black and white and colour pictures. Now this was ‘all new’ for the three of us at this meet-up. We whipped out our phones and copied some of them. Photos of us at Jamal’s wedding reception we had attended. Photos which took us back to the mid-1980s.

It had been a long evening and diners around us were tucking into Abhinandan’s famous Udupi meals. We said goodbye to Radha in the driveway and chatted; the three of us.

“What will happen to us this year?” Jamal confronted me, all of a sudden.

I stared at him.“What will Modi do?”, he asked, looking very concerned.“Why are you this disturbed?”, I asked him.“Something is going to happen to all of us,” he said.“You don’t have to fear this much,” Sridhar tried to

assure him.

He told us that his community which dominates the neighbourhood just behind where we were standing that evening was agitated and uncertain. That the elders were saying that dark clouds were gathering and that they would have to be prepared to face them.

“The local members of a political party meet us and tell us that Modi’s party is going to get us…that we must side on the parties that can challenge him,” Jamal told us.

“Do you believe everything that people are talking about?” I asked him.

“I am helpless,” he said. “ When I ask my community to sit down and discuss this calmly…when I tell them not to be taken in by extreme conversations, some of my people get back on me. They say I am Modi’s man. So I shut up.”

I put my arm on Jamal’s shoulder and told him not to live in fear. But I knew those words weren’t enough. He started his scooter and sped away, to his home closeby.

And Sridhar and I realised what the mood and thoughts, feelings and fears, currents and cross-currents were in many a neighbourhood. In one, where our school was located.

Metro Rail feeder cab services: frustrating experience

It is heartening to note that Chennai Metro Rail has introduced a fleet of cabs for its feeder services.

The cabs pick and drop you at points around each Metro Rail station for better connectivity.

But there are many hiccups. On Feb. 5, we reached the Teynampet Metro station by rail from the airport at around 11 a.m., hoping to get a cab to reach home that is close to TTK Road, Alwarpet.

We could see a cab parked at the exit but the driver was not to be seen around. For a few minutes we looked for him on all sides and waited. Then we booked a Ola auto since we had given up on the cab.

It took quite some time to book even Ola.So for about 20 minutes we were loitering

near the station after having alighted from the rail and I must mention here that the driver was not back till then.

(Ola charged Rs 66 for this roughly 2 km distance probably because it was peak time.

We paid Rs 70. Now, Metro Rail’s feeder service costs Rs 10 per person)

This experience is frustrating and Metro Rail should closely see to it that the facilities and system functions properly.

We feel very proud about Metro Rail in our city that gives us clean and quick com-muting. It would be better if some share autos are tied up with Metro stations for the last mile connectivity.

These services at Teynampet are essential for people who reside in Alwarpet, R. A. Puram and Mylapore areas and in the reverse direction as well. Many are regulars to the airport.

Ping me if there is chaos: mada street anecdote

Thoughtfulness can go a long way!Recently, I was visiting a temple located in one of

the ‘not so wide’ streets of Mylapore. The one-way traffic rule did not do any good to pedestrians who were using this road.

You will find that many people who visit temples in Mylapore squeeze their cars into some parking space and this can really cause a big headache to many.

That evening though I noticed that one of the car owners who was probably visiting the temple had parked his car in the corner of the street and had left his number on a cardboard sheet placed inside the car.

He had done this so that anybody who found his parked car a hindrance could call him up immediately.

Thoughtful move indeed in the midst of chaos.- Subha Dilip, Mylapore

Open-close food jointsLots of for joints are opening and closing in the

Mylapore zone. And the reason seems to be the stiff rentals that entrepreneurs cannot withstand when they need time to be popular.

A thattu idli shop closed down even before I could make up my mind to sample its menu.

Office does not issue ration card to single person, a senior citizen

Reading Venkateeswaran’s letter in last week’s Mylapore Times on his woes of getting a ration card, I would like to register my woe too.

The local Civil Supplies office is not recognising my 96 year old father’s card saying that they have stopped providing ration for single card owners.

They first said that he should come in person and sign their ledger, then they said he should come in person to buy rations and lastly they refused to issue a card saying it cannot be issued to single card owners.

He has been using the ration card to buy ration for more than 40 years and now the Civil Supplies office refuses to acknowledge his card.

We do not know what the rules regarding this are and it is left to the officers to interpret as they understand it.

It would be helpful if the Civil Supplies office clears our doubts about this matter .

When the news of the passing away of well-known Sanskrit guru Malathy

Balasubramanyan on November 22 last year at her residence in Medavakkam in the city reached far and wide, her legion of students were distraught.

Malathy was 76 years old. She used to teach Sanskrit for women and children at Saraswathi Giri Veda Patasala at Sringeri Mandapam, Mandaveli for several years.

Malathy’s second daughter-in-law Mathangi Gurumurthy says that she was unwell for over a year before her passing.

Malathy started learning Sanskrit from the age of 35. She obtained Sahitya Shironmani and Vedanta Shironmani qualifications under the tutelage of different gurus. Malathy continued her Sanskrit studies, and has also conduct-

ed Samskritasri and Chittoor exams for students for more than three decades.

Born on June 6, 1943, at Kumbako-nam, Malathy studied at Banaa Durai High School, Kumbakonam. She married her maternal uncle K. Balasubramhanyan at the age of 15. The couple moved to Chennai in 1960. They were residents of Warren Road, Mylapore for over 40 years and later moved to Medavakkam.

Mathangi says that her mother-in-law was a very organised person who never uttered a word in anger. “She was a doting mother, a devoted wife, a loving mother-in-law and a caring daughter who somehow found time to manage all four roles with aplomb, in addition to being a teacher. She was inherently a fun-oriented grandmother - all her grandchildren sought her out to play,” Mathangi says.

Malathy is survived by her sons B. Ganapathy and B. Gurumurthy, daughter B. Gayathri, and their families. The family can be reached at 22463258/9940328516.

Big group of students pay tribute to their Sanskrit guruBy Our Staff Reporter

Some 100 people attended a memorial meeting late last year at a hall in Mandaveli to pay their tributes to the well-known San-skrit guru, Malathy Balasubramanyan. The meeting was held at Sringeri Mandapam in Mandaveli. Malathy’s large number of stu-dents and classmates were at the meeting.

Malathy passed away on Nov.22, 2019 at her residence in Medavakkam. She was 76 years old.

She used to teach Sanskrit for women and children at Saraswathi Giri Veda

Patasala at Sringeri Mandapam, Mandaveli for several years. She was a resident of War-ren Road in Mylapore for over 40 years.

Said Sulochana Ramani, a senior student of Malathy and the organiser of the meet-ing, “We said a silent prayer and then a few students and classmates of Malathy spoke about her.”

Sulochana, who has been associated with Malathy for a long time says that Malathy was very humble and soft-natured. “She was an excellent teacher who encouraged each and every student to study Sanskrit and also take exams in it,” she said.

Long, long after cyclone Vardah damaged a portion of the com-pound wall at MTC’s Mandaveli bus depot, its civic workers have fixed the damage by erecting a temporary wall now. The contractor of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) carried out this work recently. Said a staff at the bus depot, “We have erected only a temporary wall as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has plans to take over much of this area for its project.”

This Saturday, the stairs that lead up to the residence of Abiramapuram artist Dar-shana Bajaj, her hall and living room will turn into a art gallery.

To celebrate her love for art, the artist is hosting a Valentine’s day special studio exhibition.

In a way, this is Open Studio.A range of paintings that the artist has

created based on different themes will be on display.

Darshana has been in this field of work for some 20 years now. This is the first time that the self-taught artist will display her artworks in an ‘open studio’ set-up. Says Dar-shana, “These days, most art galleries in the city do not host artwork of self-taught artists

like me. Only artists with professional art degrees get to showcase their work.”

She hopes people will come by, spend time at the studio and if keen, buy a painting or two.

Through years of meditation, the 47-year-old says she realised that all humans are deeply bonded with nature. And this theme dominates most of her work. “I also derive inspiration from the trees, plants, and leaves that I observe during my walks around the neighbour-hood.”

While most of her works are oil paintings, she also experiments with water-colours, crayons and pencil sketches. Some of her abstract paintings are drawn using painting

knives. On Saturday, guests can step into her work space and chat with her about her work.

The show is at 2, Tyre House, 2nd floor, Prithivi Avenue (next to Crest Clinic), Abhiramapuram. On Feb.15 (Saturday) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Open to all.

Darshana can be contacted at 9094341945 or at [email protected]
