“U KIANG NANGBAH”-A JAINTIA HERO
P a g e | - 5 -
The Jaintia kingdom was annexed to the East India Company in 1835. After its annexation a
series of measures were introduced in the Kingdom. One of such policies was imposition annas per
house. The British also interfered with religious rituals of the people by issuing an order prohibiting the
burning of the dead of one from Sumer Clan. Again, when Pastieh dance were performed, at Hong, the
police interrupt the ceremony, by snatching away all the swords, shields, bows, and arrows as well as
other articles used in the religious ceremonies.
U Kiang Nangbah, a young lad then watch the events with pity for those who were unable to pay
tax, and was filled with anger at the interference of the British with the religious and cultural affairs of
the Kingdom. His heart melted and he wanted to save his motherland and people. His desire was
materialized when the Durbar of the 12 (twelve) Dalois was convened at Madiah Kmai Blai (present
Madan Syntu Ksiar), the Dorbar took stock of events and resolved to start a mass movement for the
sake of their country’s freedom.
In that memorable Durbar, U Doloi of Nartiang, known as U Kong-Wasan garlanded Kiang
Nangbah with his armours to become a leader of the people of the 12 (twelve) Doloiships.
In the course of a long Struggle for freedom, Kiang Nangbah was captured while he was ill at
Mynser (now in Karbi Anglong District, Assam). He was chained and paraded to Jowai on the 30th
December 1862, where he was sentenced to death by hanging.
The determination to free his motherland from foreign yoke had encouraged Kiang Nangbah to
sacrifice his own life. His life had set an example to his countrymen never to compromise with foreign
rule, but strike hard for the fulfillment of Ideals i.e. “Freedom”
It is because of the contribution made by U Kiang Nangbah, that the Government of Meghalaya
declares and observes 30th December, his death anniversary, as U Kiang Nangbah Day. Further, the
Government of Meghalaya also confers every year the State award, known as Kiang Nangbah Award, for
the most outstanding sports person of the State.
An academician and public leader, Prof. R.C.Laloo, perhaps was also being inspired by the
sacrifice made by U Kiang Nangbah that led him to take initiative of renaming Jowai Government College
to Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai. Established on 15th September 1967, the erstwhile Jowai
Govt. College was renamed on 30th December, 1984, as Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai and
from then onwards came to be known by that name.
