Perhapsyou’remoreinterestedinjusta summaryofthebooksthatmatchthestandard(withoutallthedetailsaboutwhichstrandiscorrelated).Ifso,thisreportisforyou.Itwilllistoffallthebooksthatstudentshavereadthatmeetobjectivessetbystatestandards.

Thebuildingadministratorroleisassignedtothepersonresponsibleforsystemwidedecisionsandreporting.Many ofthesystemdecisionswillbeinheritedbyteachersandstudentsthatarepartofthebuilding.

Forexample,ifthebuildingadministratorturnsoffanoptionlikebookreviews,teacherswillnotbeallowedtoturnitbackon.

Unlessthereisabuildingordistrictpolicysetthatneedstobefollowed,werecommendthatthesystemdefaultsbeleftinplacewithoutbeingalteredatthebuildinglevel.

Thebuildingadministratorcanseesummarystatisticsforthewhole school.Thisisparticularlyhelpfulinschoolchallenges(likenumberofbooksread,ortimespentreading).Theadministratorcanseebeyondthesummarydowntotheindividualstudent,andevenreassignstudentstodifferentclassrooms.

Theadministratorsetsthegradelevelsusedintheschool,whichteachersareassignedtowhichgrades,andwhichclassesareestablished.Allofthiscanbedoneindividuallywithafewclicks.But,therearealsooptionstobulkimportclassandteacherdata,alongwithstudentdata.

Aneasierway(andahugetimesaver)foradministratorstopopulate myONisthroughbatchprocesses.Here,theycanimportaspreadsheetlikefiledirectlyintotheprogram.Thereisanorderinwhichthedataneedstobepopulatedthough:

1. Theadministratormustsetwhatgradesareintheschool2. Then,theyneedtosetwhichclassesareassociatedwithwhichgrades3. Nowit’stimetoaddteacheraccounts4. Teacheraccountsmustthenbeassociatedwithclasses5. Finallyit’stimetoaddthestudents– theymustbeplacedintheirclasses6. Optionally,ifstudentphotosareavailable(fromayearbookCD),theycanbeimported

Situations toplanfor:•Highmigrationrateofstudents– plantorefreshstudentdataweekly/monthly/quarterly•Highturnoverofteachers– plantovalidateandupdateteacherdatafrequently•Studentschangeclasses/teachers– plantorefreshstudentdataweekly/monthly/quarterly•Graduationandbulkpromotionofstudents– plantorefreshstudentdataweekly/monthly/quarterly

Thebuildingadministratorcansetbuildingoptionstoremovefunctionality.Turningthebookquizzesand/orbookreviewfunctionalityoffwillremovethefunctionalityfrom everystudentinthatschool.ThatmeansthataTeacherorLibrarianrolecannotturnthefunctionalitybackon.

Beforeyouturnoffthebuildingoptions,makesureyouunderstandwhatlimitsthatwillplaceonstudents.Ifbookquizzesareneededbyaparticularteacherorreadinggroup,don’tturnthemofffortheentirepopulation.Instead,askteachersindividuallytoturnofffunctionality.

Thebuildingadministratorcanlimitwhatbooksstudentscanaccess.Turningoffabookwillremoveitfrom everystudentinthatschool.ThatmeansthataTeacherorLibrarianrolecannotturnthebookbackon.

Thepowerof myONreaderistheabilitytopersonalizebookrecommendationstoeachstudent.Thismakesreadingmoreinterestingforstudents,whichengagesthemtopracticereadingmoreoften.AbookthatmaynotbeappropriateforGrade1studentsmaybeperfectlyacceptableforstudentsinGrade5.But,removingabookherewillremoveitforeveryone.WestronglyrecommendkeepingalltitlesavailableinmyONreader,sincetherecommendationenginewilleffectivelylimittitlesforeachstudenttojusttheirreadinglevelandinterests.But,ifyou’reconcernedabouttheappropriatenessofabookortwo,youcanquicklyremovethosefromavailability.

Removingbooksfromavailabilitycannegativelyimpacttherecommendationengineandsystemperformance.Don’tremovemorethan10booksfromthesystem.

Bestpracticetiptofollow:Don’tlimitthebooksavailablefromthebuildinglevel.Instead,askteacherstomanagethebooklibraryattheclassandgrouplevel.

UsetheLibrarian roleforreadingspecialist,literacycoach,curriculumdirectororlibrarymediaspecialists.

Anyonewhoneedstoviewtheentireschoolratherthananindividualclass,andwhomightneedtoassignaTeacher’sListtoagroupofstudentsshouldbeassignedtheLibrarianrole.

TheLibrarianrolecanviewasummarydashboardofschoolstatistics,andevenseethesebrokendownbygrades.But,thisrolecannotmanageindividualstudents.Instead,theLibrarianrolewillcreateagroupthatteacherscanassignstudentsto.

LibrarianRolecan:

Typically,thestudentsbeingassignedtoaschoolwidegroupfallintooneoftheseareas:•Thewholeschoolduringsummerbreak,forarecommendedsummerreadinglist.•Studentsrequiringfurtherreadingintervention.•Bookclubstudents.

TheLibrarianrolecannotmove studentstoanyofthesegroups.Instead,theyshouldworkdirectlywiththeteachertoidentifystudentsthatneedtobeplacedinoneoftheschoolwidegroups.Theteacherremainstheadministratorforthestudentaccounts.But,byplacingthemintoagroupestablishedbytheLibrarianrole,nowthepersoninthisrolecan:•Createa“Teacher’sList”booksetandassignittothestudentsenrolledintheirgroup.•Modifysettingsforbookquizzes,bookreviews,andbookscaffolding.

And,studentsdon’tfeelanystigmaattachedtobeingplacedinadifferentgroup– theywon’tevenrealizethatthefunctionstheyhaveaccesstomightbedifferentfromotherstudents!
