The IdeaThe topic on everyone’s mind these days is healthcare. Specifically, how do I get some? Healthcare is changing in 2012, and we decided to create a website for people who are not provided with healthcare through their jobs and

3

are looking for a private plan — the unemployed, the freelancers, the part-timers. A key component of our product would be the database of community reviews which allowed users to see what other users thought of individual plans.

Market ResearchWhen we began this project, we did some light market research to see if similar products already existed. I did some more in depth research before I started sketching for the website. Two similar websites already existed. We began to define our website in relation to these two competing sites. The amount of information on healthcare.gov was overwhelming, so we decided to keep our website simple, in contrast, with info only directly related to private healthcare plans. Ehealthcareinsurance.com didn’t have enough information, and lacked a trustworthy tone. We based our forms and results pages on those of healthcare.gov.

Healthcare.gov

This government sponsored website covered every possible healthcare option for revery possible patient. The design of the website is basic, but the site is stuffed with information.

Ehealthinsurance.com

This private website is profit-driven, gathers little information to generate plans and has no assurance of the quality of its information.

The NameWhen deciding on a name, we kept in mind the core qualities of our site. We wanted a friendly and approachable name. ‘My Plan’ described the key product of our

site — a healthcare plan — and emphasized the personal, individual quality, conveying the idea that our site helps users find exactly the right plan for them.

The TaglineOur tagline needed to make the healthcare aspect of our product clear, since it wasn’t referenced in the name. It also emphasizes the genuine quality of My Plan — one

the whole healthcare truth

of the site’s distinguishing factors was that it was unbiased, neither government run nor profit driven, and is a practical database of real people’s opinions.

The LogoRather than appropriating medical imagery to reinforce the fact that our product is healthcare related, we chose a mark more unique to My Plan. The arrows reference the different reviews and inputs that

guide a user to their plan. The handmade quality of the arrows creates a friendly, approachable impression. Their imperfectness reinforces the idea that My Plan is a genuine company about real people.

Color Exploration

Gradients were quickly discarded because they interfered with legibility.

I first simplified the color palette by limiting background color to one shade of light blue, and adding a bright red-orange as an accent color.

In the final drafts, the background color was change to manila to echo the file folders used for medical files, and the accent orange was changed to a browner orange to reflect the colors of the logo. A white box was added to frame the questions.

9

Our initial thought for a color palette was blues and greens. Cool colors appear calming and friendly. Blue was also a common color in other healthcare products and services.

We decided on a combination of two color palettes for experimentation in early drafts. However, these proved to be too complicated, distracting from the content.

Page 15: MyPlan Documentation book

10

Page 16: MyPlan Documentation book

11

Page 17: MyPlan Documentation book

We wanted MyPlan to be available to the largest amount of people, so we decided it would be a website, rather than an app. As a website, it could be accessed at people’s home or work, or at places like the public

library. We felt that people would probably not be making important healthcare decisions on the go, but our website would be optimized for mobile viewing.

Moving to the Web

12

Page 18: MyPlan Documentation book

Preliminary SketchesWhen I began my preliminary sketches, I was thinking about the content of the website and the framework of the website. I was trying to determine what content would be on each page, and how the pages would work together. How many pages total would the website be? How many levels of navigation would I need? What would appear on every page? Even though I would only be creating a few screens, I created a map of pages and how they might link together.

Our home page is very basic, and establishes the look for the rest of the website. With only two options, the user is not overwhelmed with choices. The figures reference other

literature for MyPlan. They are unique and individual, like each plan. They represent the real people who helped create MyPlan.

I used photographs in early attempts to personalize our home page and link it to MyPlan’s brand, but photos were too specific and generic. Instead we chose to use illustrations created by Sasha. Their charming handmade quality helps express the idea of MyPlan as a individualistic product and creates a visual language that is unique to MyPlan.

After going through the basic steps to create an account, users enter their personal information. In its early incarnations, this page was overloaded with questions. Initially I had planned on using both a serif

and a sans serif typeface. However, I found I could create enough levels of hierarchy with a sans serif alone, and a serif typeface seemed too formal for MyPlan’s needs.

The uppermost question was occupying the most space, and requested a lot of information from the user in one sentence. In later drafts, it was split into three questions and distributed across two screens.

These questions developed from the long question on the previous page. Splitting the long query allowed me to create a more equitable distribution of information , so no once screen felt overcrowded or unfinished, and rephrase the new questions to be more friendly and less formal.

A slider without numbers was introduced to make it clear that the individual rankings of each quality had no bearing on each other. However, this rectangular slider was not easy to use and it was not clear to users that it was a slider.

The simple circular slider is more user-friendly. The phrasing of the question was changed to ‘How important are each of these qualities to you’ to emphasize the personal nature of the query.

After entering their preferences, users are taken to the results page. These results page is initially blank, with a list of plans on the left side, which users can sort by a variety of features, or select to see more of if they wish. Users can compare up to two plans at a time. When a plan is selected, the selection is indicated by an orange bar, and the information populates in the left or right box. The information includes the plan name and basic

details, as well as an average rating and a sample of both a positive and a negative review. The word cloud collects the most commonly used words in all the reviews for a single plan; the most common words are largest and less common words are smaller, allowing the user to see which features are commonly discussed. A ‘details’ button is available for each plan, which takes the users to a more in depth view of the selected plan.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson

123 Cherry Tree Lane

Greendale PA, 37904

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson,

Over 52 million Americans do not have basic health insurance. Although President Obama’s

healthcare plan covers a large portion of America, it still excludes some people and will not fully take

effect until 2014.

We know that being uninsured is stressful and scary, but you can get the answers you need from

MyPlan and our community of hundreds of people just like you. With a few specific questions, you are

on your way to finding the healthcare plan that best suits your specific needs and preferences.

MyPlan is dedicated to helping you find the best plan with the help of people just like you. User

reviews from real people on real plans are unbiased and a deeper look into what it’s really like to have

each plan. They understand what you are going through and can relate to your struggles be they

financial or medical and chances are their stories will sound familiar as well.

So if it’s flexible spending, a large network of doctors, or great customer service that you’re looking

for, you can sort your options based on your priorities.

After all, this is your plan.

Sincerely,

Anna Shafer-Skelton

Hi! I’m Jess.

I can help you find the right

health insurance with MyPlan.

Along with two other uninsured Americans, I can show you how easy it is to find the best health insurance with the help of MyPlan.

I’m Tomas Hernandez & I haven’t had insurance

since my wife passed away last year.

We’re the Goodmans. We need insurance because

Dads work doesn’t provide it.

I’m Jessica Lee I lost my health insurance

after I graduated college.

Since I aged off my parents’ plan and am unemployed, I need

to find basic health insurance on my own.

My family has a history of breast cancer and I want to constantly

monitor my health.

MyPlan helped me find an affordable & comprehensive

plan. I read the user reviews to pick one with great customer service.

(I like nice people.)

Dad loves his new job, but they don’t offer health insurance.

Mom homeschools me (Abi!) and stays at home since I’m getting

a new brother soon.

MyPlan helped us find a plan with excellent prenatal care for Mom and a flexible spending plan to cover my

inhalers and allergy shots.

I’m a retired veteran of the US Navy and used to be on my

wife’s insurance plan.

I need help paying for my many medications for blood

pressure, heart, and diabetes.

MyPlan helped me find a manageable plan with

very understanding customer service. They are always

willing to answer my questions.

Identity ApplicationsAnna, our identity designer, created two additional applications of MyPlan’s identity. Because of myPlan’s health-related nature, it seemed natural to create a branded

first aid kit. The second application is a small, wallet-sized card that explains various health insurance terms and is meant to be handed out in doctor’s offices and clinics.

ConclusionMyPlan fills a need in this new era of healthcare. As we envision it, MyPlan would be a nonprofit company, that would work with insurance providers, doctor’s offices, clinics, and hospitals to provide information and services to patients.

MyPlan would be advertised in health magazines and public transit, among other places. The goal would be to drive patients to myPlan’s website, where they can evaluate their health insurance.
