William Shakespeare from the Drocshout painting

now in the Shakespeare Memorial Gallery at Stratford-on-Avon.

This Elizabethan time portrait is believed to be the only

one of W. Shakespeare when the poet was alive. 1610.

What did William Shakespeare really look like?

The head is out of all proportion with the body. There is a peculiar line running from the ear down to the chin. Does this signify that the face is in fact a mask?

The Chandos portrait of Shakespeare is named after its owners, the Dukes of Chandos. The Chandos portrait was no doubt painted when Shakespeare was alive, unlike the posthumous painting, the Droeshout. Some critics argue that the painting cannot be of Shakespeare. In 1856 it became the property of Britain's National Portrait Gallery.

What is the real date of his birthday?

Why couldn't his children read or write?

William’s first child, Susanna was baptized in May, 1583. His twins Hamnet and Judith were born in February 1592. Hamnet, William's only son died in 1596, just eleven years old. Hamnet and Judith were named after William’s close friends, Judith and Hamnet Sadler. William's family was unusually small in a time when families had many children.

William Shakespeare (18 years old) married Anne Hathaway when she was 26 years old. At the time he married her she was already several months pregnant.

In his will he left only "the second best bed" to his wife.

or a group of writers. Among the numerous candidates that

have been proposed, major claimants include Francis

Bacon, Christopher Marlowe, William Stanley (6th Earl of Derby), and Edward de Vere (17th Earl of Oxford), who,

since first being proposed in the 1920s, remains the most prevalent alternate authorship

candidate.

How did Shakespeare die?

Translated this reads as:

Good friend, for Jesus’ sake, forbearTo dig the dust enclosed here;Blessed be the man that spares these stonesAnd cursed be he that moves my bones.

« Друг, ради Господа,не рой останков,

взятых сей землей. Не тронувший –

блажен в веках и проклят - тронувший мой прах».

People are constantly curious to know what is written on Shakespeare’s gravestone, and they are always surprised to learn it is a curse (проклятие).

Shakespeare himself supposedly wrote it.
