Mystery Quilt! Stellar Elegance, Clue 2 May 11, 2018 Author: Debra Montgomery Welcome to the Mystery Quilt series! It was very fun for me to see so many quilters joining me in my mystery adventure. I hope everyone is ready for Clue #2! 1. If you are joining for the first time, be sure to start with the fabric requirements and launch post to learn more about the mystery quilt and get guidance about choosing fabrics and the tools we’ll use to make Stellar Elegance. I received a lot of questions about the tools list after our launch post was published. I suggested using the Fons & Porter Omnigrid Half & Quarter Ruler or Companion Angle and the Tri Recs rulers for the mystery project. You can certainly make the mystery quilt without these, however I know you’ll find they will make the work easier. I’ll give you downloadable templates when they are needed. I highly recommend getting the both of the rulers. You’ll find them very helpful for this quilt, and I know you’ll use them for many other quilting projects. Are you ready for Clue #2? We’re making Flying Geese that finish at 6” x 3”.

Use the LIGHT and MEDIUM fabrics. Cut out the following from your fabric: LIGHT FABRIC (Assorted tone-on-tones or solids) If you are using the Half & Quarter Ruler or the Companion Angle Ruler, cut

• 4 strips 3½” x WOF (Width of Fabric) Using your Companion Angle (or Half & Quarter square ruler) cut 40 quarter square triangles. These will be your “geese”. If you prefer to cut patches, cut 10 squares 7 1/4” x 7 1/4”. Cut each of these square in half diagonally, twice. These triangles will be used to make your geese. MEDIUM FABRIC (Assorted tone-on-tones or solids) If you are using the Half& Quarter Ruler or the Companion Angle Ruler, cut

• 4 strips 3½” x WOF Laying the strips RST (right sides together) and using your half and quarter square ruler, cut 40 matched sets of triangles (following directions on the specific ruler). You will have 80 small triangles total. If you prefer to cut patches, cut 40 squares 3 7/8” x 3 7/8”. Cut each of these in half diagonally.

When I laid my WOF strips RST, I got 26 sets from each strip set. These triangles are the wings of the Flying Geese. With all the patches cut, you are ready to sew the wings on the geese. Sew a matched set of 2 medium triangles to each 1 light triangle as shown below.
