    EDITORS CORNER

    GLASS & GLAZING

    A conference in Venice found

the Board of Directors of Roto

    Frank in bullish mood despite

    market conditions, Michael

    Gannon reports.

The report was made to the Ninth

International Trade Press Day where 65

    journalists from 16 countries attended.

    However, despite the success, 2014

turned out to be a weak year for

    markets, characterised by negative

    trends, according to Eckhard Keill,

    Rotos Chief Executive. His pessimistic

prognosis was that 2015 will be much

    the same.

He went on to state that the aim had to

be once more to outperform markets

    and competitors. When we predicted

that 2014 would bring lateral movement

of markets at best, rather than upwardtendencies, we were blamed for being

too negative. Now we know that we

had actually been too optimistic, he

    asserted.

According to the Roto CEO, the most

relevant markets had seen rather steep

losses. In comparison, the Roto Group

has been able to keep up its positive

    business performance and ensure

    economic stability. The main factors

of success was put down to a strict

customer benet focus and the globalimplementation of German made

    values.

    Among other factors, numerous political

crises had led to lowered forecasts in

2014, e.g. China is experiencing its

lowest growth rate (7%) in 25 years

and Europe is languishing at best. Dr

Keill stated the Russian economy was

suering from sanctions imposed as a

reaction to the Ukraine conict. The only

ray of hope for him was the recovery

in North America and a better thanpredicted improvement in the UK.

    He criticised developments in Germany,

where slowing growth rates seen in

2014 and expected for 2015 were largely

    home grown problems.

    Perhaps contentiously, he insisted

that it was evident that the German

    governments soft-touch policies point

in the wrong direction. For example,

    handing out generous social presents

at the expense of urgently needed

    investments into infrastructure and

    energy eciency.

The rest of Europe oered, at best, only

moderate signs of recovery from the

    recession.

    Though the total construction volume

in the 19 Euroconstruct countries is

expected to grow again from 2016, it

would still be below 1998 levels. This

    moderate growth will supposedly be

    triggered by residential construction,

which is characterised by strong country-

    specic disparities, said Eckhard Keill.

    According to research institutes, Ireland,

the UK, Hungary and Poland will be at

    the forefront, while Belgium, Denmark,

Germany and Switzerland will only be

    mid-range. Finland, France, Norway,

Spain and the Czech Republic will be the

bottom of the table due to a decline in

    residential construction.

    PESSIMISTIC FORECAST

On the face of it, Keills forecast for

the window and door markets was

pessimistic with a sharper decline than

what had been expected a year ago. No

general turnaround was to be expected in

2015 and some overseas markets seem

to be a real unknown quantity.

The rst session struck a number of the

English journalists as a little strange with

a perhaps overlong focusing on Roto on

a report it had at the fensterbau exhibition

in Nuremburg earlier in the year.

Perhaps it showed on our side that

we were not fully aware about theimportance that the event has for

companies in Europe. But, no doubt,

the ndings showed a consistently high

rating in terms of appreciation of the

products and services on the Roto stand.

On the other hand, it appeared a little too

self-congratulatory to form such a largepart of the morning session.

    SOUTHERN EUROPE

An analysis of the market was put

    forward by Francesc Gimeno, the

Managing Director for the Window and

    Door Technology Division Southern

Europe. He concentrated on the fortunes

    of France, Italy and Spain.

Given the bad coverage France has had

in recent times, it came as a surprise to

hear that compared with Italy and Spain,Gimeno reported France has weathered

the crisis quite well. The volume of new

buildings had only decreased by 9%

since 2009. Continued on page 6...

    CONFIDENCE IN THE

    FACE OF ADVERSITY

The beautiful location of Venice was the destination

for the latest Roto Conference for the trade press.

Our image shows the Palazzo Grimani which was

built at the height of the Renaissance period.

The table shows the dierences between the major

countries of Rotos Southern Europe region.

    LETTERS NEWS

    GLASS & GLAZING

    With the New

    Year in full swing,

    digital expert The

    Consultancy, a

    specialist in the

    window and door

    industry, is advising

    companies to carry

    out their New Year

    Digital Checklist.

    1. WEBSITE

How often do you visit your

    own website? Do you have

    a functioning website? Many

    companies create a website

    and then leave it static,

thinking it will be sucient on

its own. This is not the case.

    Richie Thornton, Director of

    The Consultancy, said: A

    website must be constantly

    maintained and tested for

    functionality. Everything should

    be working and new content

should be added as and when

    needed. No one revisits a

    website which has looked the

same for the last ve years,

    regeneration is key.

    2. ANALYTICS

    Every website should have

    access to its analytics page,

    allowing users to track

    how people nd their site,

    if their marketing methods

    are working and if theyre

    reaching the correct audience.

    Richie added: If your

    marketing isnt driving people to

    your website, you should know

about it and should be acting

quickly. You also need to be

    nding out how people access

    your website whether its

    through social media, literature

or SEO and capitalise on that.

    3. BUSINESS PROCESSES

    Your business may be

    successful, but is it running

    as eciently as possible?

    Breaking down the various

    systems your customers

and sta use and seeing if

    theres anything which can be

    optimised.

    4. DIGITAL APPRAISAL

If youre unsure of the above,

    The Consultancy can carry

    out a full Digital Appraisal,

    nding out what you want

    from your online systems and

    how to achieve it.

    Richie said: Many people

    know theres a problem but

just keep pushing it to the

back of the pile. Through a

simple chat with us we can

    identify what youre looking

for, carry out a full digital

    examination and provide you

with a set of results and notes

    for improvement.

    5. YOUR CUSTOMERS

    Business may be steadily

    increasing, but is your

    customers? If your traders

    are receiving more orders,

then you will be too. So why

not take a look at their online

    processes and see if theres

    anything you can help with.

    If theyre struggling with

    their online presence and are

    losing customers because

    of it, The Consultancy oers

    many low-cost packages

    through their sister company

    The Glazing Vault, http://

    THE CONSULTANCYSNEW YEAR CHECKLIST

With industry standards becoming ever more

stringent it is no real surprise that every change

to regulations brings with it a urry of activity

as companies decide on the best way tocomply. So it is somewhat surprising that was

yet we have seen little discussion surrounding

    proposed amendments to Approved Document

    Q: Security.

The Document became up for consultation in September 2014,

and it is something that will aect everybody supplying to new

build and refurbishment works, making PAS 24 a compulsory

requirement. Previously a nice to have particularly for those

using Secured by Design as a selling tool, the change to the

standard will eectively level the playing eld as everybody will

    need to comply.

There are two ways in which you can meet the proposed

requirements of Approved Document Q: one is to demonstrate

that you conform to PAS 24 and the other is to become

Secured by Design accredited. So those of you with Secured

by Design status should in theory already be compliant, but we

advise anyone who is not to start thinking about it as soon as

possible and put plans into place to ensure you are ready when

    the time comes.

O the back of this, it is also worth taking into consideration

that PAS 24 itself is likely to be revised, with a much stricter

pass criteria for doors. Whilst unconrmed at this stage, therevised standard looks set to take safe egress in the event of

a re into account, with thumbturns instead of keys tted to

doors. We envisage a great deal of re-testing will be required

should this be the case, particularly when you consider

that 95% of doors currently tested are done so with keys,

so compliance will need to be demonstrated with the new

    component.

We believe that any move to promote higher security is surely

a positive. It is certainly something high on the list of concerns

amongst consumers - just look at the brand awareness

Secured by Design has achieved in the market and not before

time. Prior to 1997, the only real security requirement was thatwindows be lockable in accordance with BS 7950 and the rst

proper PAS 24 standard was only introduced in 1999.

We understand that changes to regulations can seem daunting

and are happy to speak to anybody about testing their

products in preparation. We oer a range of high quality testing

solutions including support for companies looking to gain

Secured by Design accreditation and meet PAS 24 - from our

purpose built, fully equipped testing facility in Telford. So give

us a call and nd out how we can help ensure your products

meet the relevant standards in 2015.

    Yours Sincerely

    Trade fabricator Bison Frames

is a company with strong roots

in its local community. Sowhen the opportunity arose to

get behind and sponsor the up

    and coming local band The

    Sherlocks, Bison were more

    than happy to help.

Mark Tetley, Bisons Sales Director, says,

Were proud to be a company that

oers local support and want to see the

    community thrive. Our growing business

means were already doing our bit for thelocal economy and by sponsoring The

Sherlocks we can do our bit for the local

    music scene too.

The Sherlocks hail from Bolton on

Dearne, just down the road from Bisons

HQ in Barnsley. They have alreadyperformed over 700 gigs and released

their debut single, Live for the Moment,

    in October.

The tune reached the top ve in the

    iTunes alternative chart a remarkable

achievement for an unsigned band. The

band write and produce all their own

songs and have a sound thats described

    as upbeat and bodacious, with

    thrashing vocals and rhythmic guitars.

The four piece band consists of two sets

of two brothers: Kiaran Crook on leadvocals and rhythm guitar, Josh Davidson

on lead guitar, Andy Davidson on bass

and Brandon Crook on drums. Mark

Tetley said, Theyre a great group of lads

who work extremely hard and are always

performing sell-out gigs at venues and

festivals. The band has got a great future

and were delighted to be able to help

    them on their way.

Bison Frames has a reputation for

supporting the next big thing: its Genesis

vertical slider is rapidly proving that PVCucan be accepted for use in Grade II listed

buildings while its Fold & Glide door

system reinvents the concept of bifolding

doors. So if Bisons ability to spot a

winning formula is anything to go by, The

Sherlocks look set for the big time!

    EN1279 parts 2 and 3 with all

    secondary sealant types.

At the bottom of the page is

a list of spacer bars that have

only been tested with hot melt

    sealant and can therefore only

    be simulated with this type

of sealant. As stated by the

    British Fenestration Rating

    Council (BFRC) in recent

    publicity, "the BFRC will only

    accept simulation reports that

    have a listed combination

    of spacer bar and sealant."

    Thermobar with hot melt

    sealant currently oers the

    best 2-box value available.

    Thermoseal Group's Sales

    Director Mark Hickox,

    comments: "We have spoken

to a few customers who are

    under the misconception that

the BF data sheets listed at

the bottom of the BF web

    page in the section 'Data

sheets only valid for use with

    hotmelt-sealant:' are the only

ones suitable for use with hot

    melt. This is incorrect. These

    data sheets are those which

can be used with hot melt

    but have not demonstrated

    suitability for use with PU

and PS data sheets. All of the

    data sheets listed above this

section can be used with all

    sealant types. We are pleased

to say that Thermobar is not

only suitable for use with PS

and PU, it also oers the best

    2-box model value available

    with hot melt!"

    SPACER BAR

    GLASS & GLAZING

    Thermobar Interbar,

    manufactured by

    Thermoseal Group,is a bespoke range

    of bar designed

    to replace existing

    internal aluminium

    systems that

    simulate multi-pane

    windows. It is a plastic

    alternative which

    helps to improve

    energy eciency andminimise the potential

    for condensation on

    an insulated glass

    (IG) unit around the

    surface mounted

    system.

    According to BS EN14351,

    using internal aluminium

    systems can result in a

    u-value penalty on the sealed

    unit which can signicantly

aect the energy rating of the

unit. We suggest that this will

    eventually aect the Window

    Energy Rating (WER) system

    which currently does not take

    into account internal Georgian

    or multi-pane systems.

    This new bar is designed

    specically to complement

    Thermobar Warm Edge

    Spacer (although it can be

    used with other warm edge

    spacer systems) which is

ocially at the top of the list

    of the most thermally ecient

    spacer systems suitable for

    use with both PU/PS and

    hot melt sealants as per

    gures published on the new

    Bundesverband Flachglas

    (BF) Data Sheet 0.14W/mK.

    Thermobar Interbar can be

    supplied with compatible

    centre and edge keys

    in 11.5mmx18mm and

    15.5mmx18mm. It is currently

in stock in black, but grey

    and white alternatives will be

    available in the New Year.

    Mark Hickox, Sales Director

    at Thermoseal Group, says:

    _Our innovation centre is

    working tirelessly to expand

    our range of cost-eective

    warm edge accessories.

    Thermobar Interbar has been

    in development for over 2

    years and we have received

    some excellent feedback

    from our customers using

    it so far. By manufacturing

    the products ourselves we

    can provide energy ecient

    We are currently asking

    our customers to speak to

    our area sales managers so

    we can demonstrate how

    cost-eective our warm edge

    solutions are when replacing

    aluminium alternatives and

    CERTIFICATE

    GLASS & GLAZING

Traditionally, at this time of year, the Certass

article takes a look back over the last 12

months; and what a year of upheaval 2014 has

been for our industry! To put the past year in

context of how far the Competent Person has

journeyed, I want to travel back in a time even

farther. It has been 12 years since authority was

given to the rst Competent Person Schemes.

3 companies were chosen to operate suchschemes for 3 dierent trades.

2002: The introduction of Competent Person Schemes brought

cost savings and less paperwork to installers throughout

England & Wales versus those using the Local Authority Building

Control. The scheme became popular and in-turn consumers

started to understand that Building Regulation Compliance

Certicates (BRCCs) did not need to come from the Local

    Authority.

Although the benets of Competent Person Scheme

membership were obvious; at this stage, there was only one

Competent Person Scheme operator for glazing installers.Healthy markets crave competition and it was clear that there

was room for more than one Competent Person Scheme in the

glazing industry and that such competition would be benecial

    to contractors.

2006: Fast forward to the year in which Certass launched its

own Competent Person Scheme. This gave the marketplace

the wholesome competitive element that it needed. This was

of benet to all stakeholders in the glazing industry; not only

glazing contractors, but also to ancillary players such as

    insurance backed guarantee providers.

Certass quickly built up a loyal following of contractors, to whom

Certass remains eternally grateful. This vindicated our positionthat competition was needed in this marketplace.

2010: I joined Certass; I was brought into the company for

my technical knowledge and my background as a tradesman,

building surveyor and training provider. My rst task upon

joining was to develop a Window Energy Rating scheme. At the

time it was looking as though the Building Regulations were

going to provide one company with a domineering position

for the delivery of Window Energy Ratings. Certass made

representations to Government in order to ensure that this did

not take place. We also developed our own Window Energy

Rating scheme to demonstrate our ability to deliver a scheme

alternative. It is only through Certass intervention that prices for

Window Energy Ratings have fallen to their current levels.

Since 2010, Certass has developed major partnerships

with glass manufacturers, system companies and trade

associations to deliver innovative solutions to industry. As the

prole of Certass has increased so has the growth of Certass

membership numbers. There are currently 9 DCLG authorised

Competent Person Scheme operators for the glazing industry.

Certass is currently in a strong 2nd place and gaining. Although

Certass is driven to grow its position in the marketplace; it will

always defend and preserve its core values providing choice,

value for money, a friendly service and tailoring the delivery

mechanisms and platforms of the service to meet the needs of

    the customer.

2012:DCLG launched their Conditions of Authorisation toprovide a level playing eld for compliance to all Competent

Person Scheme operators. Every Competent Person Scheme

operator had to demonstrate compliance with these conditions

within 2 years. Whilst this meant lots of behind the scenes work

at Certass to gain UKAS accreditation, member contractors

did not feel the same pain as was felt by members of other

Competent Person Schemes because the Certass Competent

Person Scheme was already operating to UKAS standards.

2014: Certass commenced enforcement of the nal 2 Conditions

of Authorisation; namely the requirement for Minimum Technical

Competence (MTC) and the requirement for the universal

provision of consumer protection (in the form of InsuranceBacked Guarantees). These changes have been monumental

but also necessary for Competent Person Schemes to comply

with the Conditions of Authorisation- and the MTCs in particular

    can present time obstacles.

That being said, I truly believe that this will be the year where

it is said that the Competent Person has grown up. Imagine

for a second, what service you would be getting if there was

only one Competent Person Scheme? Or what price you would

be paying without the hard work we have put in since 2006? It

is only the competition that we at Certass have brought to the

marketplace that has kept the lid on high cost increases (which

would have otherwise been necessary, given the increasingly

stringent requirements). It is only with your support that we grow

and between us are able to strike the right balance within the

marketplace. So if you havent already, why not visit our website

and download our application forms to see what we have to

    oer?

Were not perfect and we know it; but at Certass we strive to

continue to improve our service to you. We will always l isten and

try to keep you as a happy customer. Our promise to you is that

we will keep working hard to deliver a better service and range

    of products suited to you.

Thanks for working with us over the years to make our industrybetter for all!

Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to one and all.

    DOORS

    GLASS & GLAZING

    Distinction Doors, the UKs

largest GRP composite doorsupplier, is celebrating 10

    years in business.

Drew Wright, founder and now Chairman

of Distinction Doors, said, It is a great

achievement for our company to have

    reached this signicant milestone.

Everyone who has worked at the

company in the past or who works for us

today has played a part in our companys

success and now is a good opportunity

to thank them for their eorts. We

should also thank our customers past

and present because we could not have

    achieved anything without them.

Distinction Doors was one of the rst

companies to bring the composite door to

the UK market back in 2004. Since then,

the composite door has gone from a social

    housing niche product to homeowner

    mainstream. According to recent industry

    research, the composite door continues

to achieve dominance in the market place

with 40% of homeowners now opting for

this type of door for their homes.

Throughout the last decade, Drew and

    his team have consistently focused

on delivering the best products and

service to the growing market. Today,

    through continual development, their

    market-leading Nan Ya slab remains

at the cutting edge. Not only does it

oer stunning aesthetics giving it a truly

    authentic grained appearance, it also

    oers some impressive performance

    benets too.

Its the most thermally ecient door on

the market in tests at the University of

Salfords Energy House it was proved to

be 19% more thermally ecient than its

rival 48mm solid timber core composite

    door.

From a standing start back in 2004,

Distinction have sold over two million

door slabs which speaks volumes about

    the quality thats on oer.

    With continued investment being made

in all areas of the business, Distinction

Doors has no plans to slow down. Drew

    explains, Weve recently made big

    investments in our customer service,

from launching a new website thats

focused on bringing in more leads for our

    customers to extending stock availability

in all areas from glass to blank cassettes.

Weve also invested 185,000 in our

new paint plant to improve quality, lead

times and cost in this area. In terms of

product range weve just launched our

70mm door and the One Lite bi-fold door,

both of which oer signicant benets

for installers looking to expand their

    portfolio.

    The investment and development made

by the company is a clear indication

of the companys desire to help their

customers take a larger slice of market

share and ensure Distinction Doors have

the building blocks in place for the next

    10 years.

    The expanding export

    division at Hurst Plastics is

    adding even more countries

The shipment of door panels to a

distributor in Thailand - some 6,000 miles

    from Hursts headquarters in Kingston-

upon-Hull - is the latest in a string of

exports to far-ung locations for the

    company.

Its been a tremendously exciting time

with our export division breaking into

and west of the globe, explains Tony

    Appleyard, Hurst Plastics Export Sales

    Distinction Doors has just been

named in the top ten SME

    businesses in the Sheeld

City Region in a list compiled

    by local publication The Star

    Business and sponsored by

    Barber Harrison & Platt.

    Chantel Roach, Distinctions Marketing

Manager, said, We are delighted to make

the top ten SMEs in the region. Last yearwe were number 19 and the move up the

rankings this year reects how strong 2014

has been for us in all areas of the business.

There are around 36,000 SMEs in

the Sheeld City Region, so to be

ranked in the top 100 is a considerable

achievement, let alone the top ten. But

    as Chantel comments, Distinction Doors

ranking reects a year of actions aimed

at cementing the companys position as

the market leader in composite doors in

    the UK.

The company has invested in its

    customer service, with initiatives

including a new website thats focused on

bringing in more leads for its customers.

It has also focused on extending stock

availability in all areas from glass to

blanks. Finally, a new paint plant, costing

185,000, has been opened, allowing thecompany to bring this facility in-house

and improve quality, lead times and cost.

Product range has also been an area of

focus, with Distinction adding two new

doors to its portfolio. The 70mm door

oers superb thermal eciency with a

typical 37% improvement over a timber

door and it can also be over-rebated

meaning it can be a direct replacement

for the PVCu equivalent. The One Lite bi-

fold composite door gives fabricators and

installers a new and innovative revenue

    stream and homeowners a sophisticated

    new option on the market.

Distinction Doors is celebrating tenyears in business this year, so it seems

tting that it should rank in the top ten

local SMEs. But with plans afoot to

further increase market share in the next

12 months, who knows how high the

    company could rank next year?

    BESPOKE TIMBER DOORS

    High end door manufacturer,

    Apeer, has produced two new

guides to tting the companysdouble rebate, triple glazed

    doors.

With correct tting critical to the

    performance of Apeers all-GRP

    composite doorsets, the new manuals

cover installation of both the door and

    frame and door and sidelight.

    Said Apeer marketing manager Linda

Tomb: Because our doors are really

robust products, they can require a little

adjustment to ensure they are ttedcorrectly. Our Apeer 70 and MODO

    collections oer superb weather proong

and insulation benets which can only be

    optimised with correct tting.

The manuals are now available for

    download on the Apeer websitehttp://

    apeer.co.uk/index.php/door_tech/.

Hard copy formats are planned for next

year, as are separate instructions for

stable doors, double doors, toplights and

    arches.

Said Linda: The guides are designed tohelp seasoned tters with step by step,

illustrated tting instructions to make the

job easier for them - and to maximise

    benets for the homeowner.

Ocially recognised as Energy A Rated,

Apeer composite doors feature a high

    density polyurethane core which oers

a higher level of strength and insulation

    compared to traditional doors. The

double rebate system a lip on the

vertical edge where the door meets

the frame adds additional draughtprotection by creating an internal

    secondary seal.

    Its toughened, triple glazed window

panels are also highly insulated and

come complete with a Q Seal warm edge

    Super Spacer system which signicantly

    improves long-term durability, energy

    eciency, condensation resistance and

    sound transmission.

Says Linda Tomb: A well tted, good

front door will put an end to cold and

draughty hallways and ensure a warm

welcome awaits the minute it is opened.

Apeer doors come with a 10-year

    Composite door

    pioneer, Solidor,

    continues to innovate

    and expand the

    range of options for

    its class leading

    products and this

    includes the antiquehardware range and

    latest Winkhaus

    AV2-B keyless entry

    system, among other

    developments.

Solidor has proven to be the

    fastest growing composite

    door manufacturer in the UK

and the only one that can lay

claim to be a true consumer

facing brand, as their websiteand other marketing materials

clearly show. The option of 17

colours inside and out is also

    supported by an incredible

    hardware range, with

    consumers oered keyless

    locking, traditional furniture

    and contemporary handles for

    the Italia Range, which have

    now been adopted by several

    other door companies. There

is of course a vast range ofmore standardise hardware

    oerings, making for more

    door congurations than any

    other composite company in

    the UK.

    The handmade traditional

    ironmongery range was

    launched back in 2012 with

    options of handles, knockers

    and letterplates in black and

pewter and sales have seen a

steady growth, following thesimilar and complementary

    handle options for PVCu

all is the 5 ring door knocker,

    which makes use of Solidors

and due to its weight cannot be

    readily tted on to lightweight

    foam lled GRP doors. The

    handle range includes Gothic,

    Monkeytail, Tudor, Narrow

Twist and Avon options with a

    matching letter plate.

    Eager to work with like

    minded companies, Solidor

    was a launch partner with

    Winkhaus for their new

    patented blueMatic AV2-B

    battery operated automatic

    multi-point locking system.

    Customers have already

    commented on the fact that

    its the rst keyless solution

    for composite doors for

the mass market, as itsalready based on the proven

    Winkhaus automatic AV2

    Gareth Mobley, CEO of

    Solidor Group comments:

Its important for us and our

    customers, that we expand

the options for our solid core

    composite doors which are

    in fact bespoke, with each

    one manufactured from a

    WINDOWS

    GLASS & GLAZING

    Well known for beating

    competitors to the punch,

The VEKA UK Group has nowunveiled the industrys only

    BSI notied and BFRC certied

    window and door energy

    performance calculator.

    Principal Engineer Tim Williams has

unveiled the only calculator in the

    industry capable of providing accurate

    SELs, DSELs in accordance with

the BFRC, and notied U-Values for

CE Marking in accordance with EN

14351. The calculator is unique to eachfabricator and their products. And the

    best part...? Its free!

BFRC rules covering the simulation of

spacer bars changed at the beginning of

    September and immediately made results

from all existing SEL calculators invalid

and subsequently illegal. The rules stated

that all warm edge spacer bars should

be simulated as two box models and all

    pre-September simplied energy licenses

based on the old spacer bar simulation

    method are now obsolete.

Tim, who has worked at VEKA for 22

years, sits on the BPF Windows Group

    Committee, the BFRC Simulators Group

    and ACDM Technical Committee, so

he was well placed to implement the

changes in standards that came into play

    at the beginning of September.

Tim explains: As of September 1st

2014, changes in BFRC rules, brought

    about by updated European standards

meant that ALL previous energy rating

    calculators immediately became invalid.

This aects all sorts of things down the

chain, including CE Marking. I know that

many people are burying their heads

in the sand, but CE Marking is a legal

requirement for windows and doors and

    making false declarations about U-Values

may lead to prosecution for fraud! I would

estimate that currently, less than 40% ofthe industry are fully covered by every

    aspect of CE Marking.

Here at The VEKA UK Group, were

    committed to staying up-to-date in

all aspects of the business. Our new

calculator is now the only intelligent one

in the industry. It is the culmination of more

than a years work, to ensure that when

    the September changes were introduced

    - our customers would have the tools to

stay on the right side of the law.

The new calculator has been ocially

notied by the BSI for CE Marking and

weve designed it to provide CE Marking

U-Values in accordance with BS EN

14351 for all the major VEKA UK Group

products, and all the variations thereof.

Were extremely proud to have the

    industrys only dual function calculator

and were delighted it oers so many

benets to our customers. The system is

bespoke to each fabricator or installer and

    personalised depending on which VEKA

or Halo systems they use. The resulting

Energy Certicate can be given to the

homeowner or client as independent proof

    of a products thermal performance.

It oers HUGE cost savings, as it can

be used as many times as you like,

completely FREE of charge! This will

    eliminate the cost currently associated

with auditing or notifying each window or

    door conguration.

Extremely simple to use, the system

allows one form to be lled in vianumerous drop down boxes that

allow fabricators to try all the available

    congurations, with dierent glass,

spacer bars etc. It is impossible to get a

wrong result as only compatible parts

will be listed for each system. It is the only

calculator that carries out all the necessary

energy rating and U-value calculationsfrom scratch, enabling many permutations

    of proles, reinforcement, spacer bars

and glass to be used. For example, it can

resolve tens of millions of ways to make

a Matrix 70 casement window, covering

28mm double glazing, as well as 36mm,

    40mm and 44mm triple glazing.

    Customers could even potentially save

money on the cost of manufacturing

their standard A rated windows by

trying a dierent variety of cost-eective

components that still result in the Athey require. We have designed the

calculator to be future proof as it can

    accommodate changes, for example, if

the Building Regs go from 1.6 down to

1.4. The calculator will be sent out to our

customers manually in the rst instance,

but ultimately the plan is for it to be

hosted on the website and customers

can log in to access their bespoke

    version.

The VEKA UK Group is well known for

being ahead of the curve when it comesto new technology, new initiatives and

    assisting customers with meeting new

    changes in legislation.

The new calculator is the latest in a

long line of innovations for The VEKA

UK Group. The company was the rst

to create an A rated window, rst to

achieve an A rating for noise reduction,

rst to establish a closed-loop recycling

system, rst to achieve a BSI Kitemark

on a bi-folding door and the only systems

company to establish its own UKAS-accredited Competent Persons Scheme.

    HARDWARE

    GLASS & GLAZING

On the 22nd-23rd November, over one hundred and fty

    locksmiths travelled from far

    and wide to UAP Tradelocks

HQ in order to attend the

    highly-anticipated TradeLocks

    Open Weekend-and what a

    success it was! People from

    all over the United Kingdom-

    including Scotland, Ireland and

    Wales (and even customers

    from France)- were eager

    to take part in educational,

    informative workshops and

    detailed demonstrations,

carried out by the best in the

    business. They were ever so

    determined to hone their skills

    and improve their performance,

    so this long-awaited event

    presented the perfect

    opportunity to do just that.

And of course, UAP Tradelocks was

always on hand to provide much-needed

assistance and advice, as and when

was needed. It was not only seasoned

    professionals who decided to take

advantage of the courses on oer, as

there were also more than a few talented

young apprentices who were keen to

learn all the tricks of the trade from well-

known and respected names. Industrylegends such as Chris Belcher, Martin

Pink and Pat McGinn were ready and

waiting to answer any pressing queries

and showcase their impressive abilities to

    an already engrossed audience.

As well as FREE Genuine Lishi, KD 200/900

    and Mortice Lock Impressioning workshops,

Key Cutting and Key Cloning Demos and

Cylinder Re-Pinning classes, there was also

a bouncy castle and fun-lled games for the

kids, including giant Jenga and Connect

4, so little ones were kept entertainedthroughout the day. Grown-ups could enjoy

refreshments in the spacious Beer Tent,

and tuck into a delicious hog roast, which

was universally declared a smash hit.

In order to make sure that people gainedhands-on experience with TradeLocks

tooling, locksmiths were given the golden

    opportunity to be shown demonstrations

    Qashqai, Vaxhaull Corsa and

    Vauxhall Combo van), and

work out how to open uPVC

    doors quickly and eciently.

    With all this information to

    hand, it goes without saying

    that these workshops proved

to be incredibly popular asyou could essentially try

    before you buy.

And due to the success of

    these demonstrations, UAP

saw sales go through the roof!

    Nearly a thousand remotes

were sold, as well as a record-

    breaking amount of mortice

    impressioning sets, pick guns

    and the revolutionary Genuine

    Lishi NightVision tools. RPCP

Belcher sets also provedto be incredibly desirable

    amongst the more discerning

    of locksmiths, as the genius

    himself (Chris Belcher) is

widely regarded as a force to

be reckoned with in the trade.

    As well as showing attendees

    how to operate tooling

    eectively so that it reaches

    its maximum potential,

    Chris Belcher also sketched

detailed diagrams as a howto guide for those looking

    to emulate his success

    when it comes to handling

    even the most complex of

    locksmithing apparatus. He

    was more than happy to

    share his extensive wealth of

    knowledge and expertise with

    like-minded individuals, and

    made sure that every question

    was answered honestly and

    concisely.

    Martin Pink and Pat McGinn

    were also in attendance,

    and oered their insight into

    Genuine Lishi lockpicking,

    key cutting machinery and

    key cloning so that fellow

    locksmiths would benet

    from this experience. The

    feedback that UAP received

    from satised punters just

    went to show how much

people enjoyed the weekendas a whole, and went away

    with some exclusive discount

deals, as well as full bellies

    and some well-kept industry

    secrets.

    Both days were jam-packed

    with bargain-hunters

    searching for one-o

    discounts, and they were

    pleasantly surprised with

    the range of quality supplies

which UAP had to oer, all

    at unbeatable prices. This

    may explain the incredibly

    positive feedback which UAP

    Tradelocks received from

    hordes of satised customers,

    both old and new.

    Ken Cumberland from

    Andertons Key Lock & Safes

had this to say about the

    TradeLocks Open Weekend: I

just wanted to say a big thank

you for a fantastic Sunday I

    some old faces and picked

up some great deals on tools, just wanted to say thank

you to the team for a very

    enjoyable time.

    It was most certainly an

    eventful and exciting

    weekend, with a great time

being had by all. Young and

    old alike thoroughly enjoyed

    themselves and the general

    consensus was that the next

    event cannot come soon

    enough.

    Paul Watts of County

    Locksmiths described the

    weekend as, An unmissable

    occasion, professionally-

    run and full of interesting

    classes and demonstrations.

    Myself and my son especially

    enjoyed the Genuine Lishi

    training course, as it gave

us the chance to work with

    top quality tooling under

the watchful eye of leadingindustry experts. We cannot

    wait until the next event!

This is a testament to all of

eorts put in by UAP in order

    to ensure that everything

    ran like clockwork and went

    according to plan!
