a mariner’s guide to Whales in the northWest atlantic

Commercial shipping plays a crucial role in the economy of the Northwest Atlantic region by carrying raw materials and manufactured goods on both an import and export basis. However, the Northwest Atlantic is also home to many species of marine mammals that can negatively be affec-ted by the repeated passage of commercial ships. Unlike many areas in the world, there was no comprehensive data set that included information about both vessel transits and whale sightings.

The Shipping Federation of Canada, Dalhousie University and the Marine Mammal Observation Network therefore joined forces to create a com-prehensive map of the Atlantic Northwest incorporating as much whale and vessel data as possible. The project’s objectives were to identify the species of whales most affected by vessel activity, pinpoint where the highest densities of whales occur, as well as to clearly relate what mariners should know about whales and their behaviour and whom to contact in the event of a ship strike.

A U.S.-made marine lubricant that complies with the Vessel General Permit (VGP) is now widely available. American Chemical Technologies (ACT), a new Green Marine partner, produces the Neptune® Series polyalkylene glycol-based lubricants. The product’s water soluble composition is the only fluid chemistry in full compliance with VGP and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Water Act requirements that came into effect last Decem-ber. ACT says its new lubricants are heavier than water and dissolve comple-

tely, leaving no surface sheen in the event of a leak or spill, and have been shown to be biodegradable according to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) tests which classify them as «relatively harmless.» They have also been found to be non-bioaccumulative in the tissues of living organisms in OECD tests.

Algoma Central Corporation officially welcomed its second Equinox Class bulk cargo vessel, the Algoma Har-vester, in Hamilton Harbour on July 17.The Equinox Class represents the next generation of Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Waterway bulk cargo vessels. The ships have been designed to optimize fuel efficiency and operating performance and, thereby, minimize environmental impact. A 45% improvement in energy efficiency over Algoma’s current fleet average is expec-ted from the Tier II compliant engine, increased cargo capacity, improved hull form, as well as a fully integra-ted IMO-approved exhaust gas scrubber that will remove 97% of all sulphur oxides from shipboard emissions. Algoma is the first company to use an IMO-approved integrated scrubber on a Great Lakes–St. Lawrence

vessel class. The Algoma Harvester picked up its first load of cargo at Port Car-tier, Que., July 11. The initial cargo of iron ore set a new record size. The Algoma Harvester will serve primarily agricultural and iron and steel industry customers and is expected to make approxi-mately10 grain and iron ore trips on the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Waterway over the balance of 2014.The Algoma Harvester joins the Algoma Equinox as part of Algo-ma’s 32-vessel Canadian-flagged Great Lakes fleet. The Algoma Equinox joined the fleet last November.

Atlantic Towing (ATL) is adding four diesel-electric platform supply vessels (PSVs) to its fleet. ATL’s first PSV 5000 newbuild is scheduled to enter service during the second half of 2016. The design was developed with a focus on reducing fuel consumption and emissions in compliance with upcoming environmental regulations. The PSVs’ environmental attributes include:

• Clean design (no oil products touch the ship’s hull)• A diesel-electric power plant (cleaner-running, less

fuel-consuming engine)• A selective catalytic reactors (SCR) system (reducing

nitrogen oxide emissions)• Ballast water treatment (ensuring no transfer of aqua-

tic invasive species)• Garbage compacting (reducing solid waste volume

discharged ashore)

The four vessels on order are Multi-Function Platform Supply Vessels (MFPSV) with one being longer than the other three and equipped with a 100-tonne active heave compensated crane that enables it to conduct sub-sea inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) work on oil-related and other seabed-based infrastructure. The IMR version also has a garage that houses two work-class remote-operated vehicles (ROVs) used in IMR work.Upon delivery the vessels will be deployed to the subarctic waters off Newfoundland and Labrador to support the Hibernia and Hebron oil projects. ATL currently operates a fleet of nine offshore support vessels.

North America’s first liquefied natural gas-fueled ferry was successfully launched from the Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia (Naples), Italy, on June 28. The F.A. Gauthier will have its interior completed while afloat in dock over the next few months with delivery scheduled late this year to the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ), a Quebec government corporation operating maritime transport for passengers. The 436-foot (133-metre) vessel is the first-ever gas-powered ferry built in Italy and marks a milestone in maritime construction. Setting any vessel afloat without damage is never a small affair and everyone’s breath

was held as a welder torched apart the last steel cable binding the ferry to its slipway. A series of lengthy moorings were used to gently slide the vessel into the water and guide it by tug into its finishing dock.Named in honour of Félix-Adrien Gauthier, Matane’s former mayor and founder of the Matane-Godbout ferry route, the $148-million ferry will be the STQ’s largest with a capacity for 800 passengers and 180 vehicles. The STQ has two other smaller LNG-powered ferries on order.

Wärtsilä, a Green Marine partner, supplied the gas-powered propulsion machinery and corresponding gas storage and handling capabilities with four Wärtsilä 34DF (dual-fuel) engines and a Wärtsilä LNGPac (liquefied natural gas fuel system). The engines can run on either LNG or marine diesel oil and the propulsion system fully meets Emission Control Area (ECA) requirements. The system of ramps at both the bow and stern will facilitate quick loading and unloading.

SMIT Marine Canada chose Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance, a leading international certification body, to carry out an assessment of the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS) against the four internatio-nally recognized benchmarks for safety, quality and environmental protection, namely: ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and the ISM Code. After extensive preparation that included various education and training sessions, meetings, internal audits,

and the creation and implementation of a quality documentation system, SMIT underwent the external assessment by LRQA in Fe-bruary and received all four certifications simultaneously in May. The external and unbiased recognition marks a milestone in the company’s efforts to improve its operations. The IMS had been de-veloped and implemented over two years. Guided by Bob Beadell of Invicta Marine Ltd., which offers assistance and support in safety, environmental and security management, and Hilary Miller, SMIT Canada’s Safety, Health, Environment and Quality Officer, employees throughout the organization have worked to implement the system and provide valuable feedback to make improvements.“Attaining this certification speaks to our continuous effort to im-prove internal process disciplines to ensure the utmost in safety, health, the protection of the environment, and quality, and to pro-vide first-class service to our customers,” says Frans Tjallingii, SMIT Canada’s president.
