In this issue ofthe Barrister, wecelebrate our LawSchool alumni, theirmany achievementsand strengths, andtheir loyalty andsupport of theiralma mater. RaquelRodriguez, JD ’85,was selected General Counsel by Florida’sGovernor Jeb Bush. Raquel, the child ofCuban exiles, graduated first in her LawSchool class. She exemplifies the best tra-dition of professionalism and service toher community and her alma mater. Along-time member of the Dean’s Circle,Raquel has always found the time to sup-port the Law School. I know you join mein congratulating her and wishing her wellin her new endeavor.

We extend our congratulations and bestwishes also to former Dean and ProfessorSamuel C. Thompson, Jr., and his wifeBarbara, who accepted positions on thefaculty of UCLA beginning January 2003.As Dean, Sam Thompson provided char-ismatic leadership to UM Law during achallenging time. He established excel-lent programs at the Law School,including the renowned Institutes onMergers & Acquisitions and the award-winning Children and Youth Law Clinic.On a personal note, I thank Sam for hisassistance, support and friendship duringthe past several years. We will miss him,and we are grateful for his commitmentand service to the Law School.

We will also miss beloved ProfessorRobert Waters, who served nearly 30 yearson our Law School faculty. I hope youwere able to join the Law School com-munity for the celebration of life servicefor Professor Waters on our campus at theAlma Jennings Foundation StudentLounge on October 25, which would havebeen his 76th birthday. We commemo-

rate Professor Waters’ life and extraordi-nary character in designating The JamesWeldon Johnson/Robert H. Waters SummerInstitute in his honor.

In these pages you will find our HonorRoll of Donors, our recognition and grate-ful acknowledgment of our alumni andfriends who have helped to support the LawSchool during the past fiscal year. The LawSchool’s greatest need is for scholarships fordeserving students. Your support is crucialto our ability to offer financial assistance tostudents, thereby enhancing the talent anddiversity of our Law School community.

Each fall the Law School hosts scholar-ship receptions to recognize the studentrecipients of these awards and to honor thosewhose generosity makes our scholarshipspossible. Family representatives of scholar-ships named for specific donors attend aspecial reception to meet the students whohave been selected to receive awards fromtheir scholarships. Our students are ex-tremely grateful to receive these scholarshipawards, which often make a life-changingdifference for them. You will meet some ofthose students in these pages.

You will also learn about a first-yearUM Law student, recipient of a presti-gious Reid Scholarship, who escapedfrom the Bosnian Serb army and eventu-ally found his way to the United Statesand to our Law School; a Law Schoolalumnus now on active duty with ourarmed services in Afghanistan who gaveaway all his books, pens and paper to atiny Afghan school, and the UM Law pro-fessor who is helping him with hishumanitarian crusade to collect booksand materials for his “adopted” school;and UM Law students from H.O.P.E.(Helping Others through Pro Bono Ef-forts), who donated every Saturday fromJanuary to April last year to provide taxpreparation assistance to low-income, eld-erly and disabled individuals in ourcommunity—in English, Spanish andCreole. I know you will be touched bythese stories as I have been.

Richard Milstein ReceivesLawyers in Leadership Award

The Law School’s Center for Ethics andPublic Service presented its seventh Law-yers in Leadership Award to RichardMilstein, JD ’74, on November 12 at a cer-emony in the Faculty Lounge. Thisprestigious award honors members of theSouth Florida bench and bar for their ser-vice to the profession and to the community.Milstein, a shareholder with Akerman,Senterfitt & Eidson, P.A., was recognized forhis professional leadership, his commitmentto our community, and his zealous advocacyon behalf of others.

Among Milsteins’ many communityactivities are his work for the SAVE Foun-dation, for which he recently received the2002 Dorothy Shula Award for Outstand-ing Volunteerism from The United Way; theArts and Business Counsel; Partners forYouth; the Greater Miami Chamber of Com-merce; the Metropolitan Dade CountyCultural Affairs Council; the Dade CulturalAlliance; and the Estate Project for Artistswith AIDS. He serves as a pro bono attor-ney for the Performing Arts Center Trust;director of the Miami Coalition for a DrugFree Community, Inc.; and co-founder ofVolunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Milstein is apast president of the UM Law Alumni Asso-ciation, 1997-1998, and supports the LawSchool and the University as well as variouslegal organizations. Recently, Milstein wasappointed Chairman of the Committee forUM Law’s Dean’s Circle donor organization.

Created by Ethics Center director Prof.Anthony Alfieri, the Lawyers in Leadershipseries provides a unique opportunity for lawstudents and others to learn about promi-nent community leaders and to participatewith them in informal discussions about theirlives and careers. Of particular interest tostudents is the career path which led thesemen and women to their respective posi-tions; the decisions, events and experienceswhich have shaped them; and the encour-agement and advice they offer for those

about to embark on their own legal careers.

Milstein was pleased to receive the Law-yers in Leadership Award, one of dozensof honors bestowed upon him over thepast two decades. He commented, “It wasa great honor to be selected by the Center,particularly by the students, to represent thealumni with regard to the profession, thehigh standard of ethics, and the mainte-nance of pro bono activities while inprivate practice.”

Past recipients of the award are formerUM President Edward Foote, JosephKlock, Jr., Ellen Catsman Freidin, HenryLatimer, U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard,and former chairman of the UM Board ofTrustees Carlos de la Cruz, Sr.

The Center for Ethics and Public Serviceis an interdisciplinary project that focuseson teaching the values of ethical judgment,professional responsibility, and public ser-vice in the practice of law. Founded in 1996,it provides training in ethics and profession-alism to the Law School and to theUniversity of Miami as well as to Florida’sbusiness, civic, educational, and legal com-munities. The Center is the recipient ofnumerous prestigious national and state barand bench awards.
