Mr. D.T.Barki, CMD, NEST with Prince Charles, UK receiving the First
Ashden Light award
Eliminating Light Poverty
There are three kinds of basic poverty that the world has identified, that is, food, clothing, and
shelter poverty. While the world and all its army of philanthropists are largely focused on these
three, Noble Energy Solar Technologies Ltd (NEST), a company with a difference in vision has
identified another kind which is equally relevant yet neglected. This kind of poverty can be called
‘Light poverty’.
Light is the integral part of life. There’s no life without light. In fact, in a recent research, it has been found that DNA emits photons, the elementary particles of light. While day is signified with sunlight, the absence of sunlight on the globe is termed as night. But man always needed light except when he slept. Light is the essence of life. If we ignore its importance, we miss life. Light is essential for the overall development of man. We cannot even spell ‘enlightenment’ without the word ‘light’!
While 2 billion people world over have no
access to electricity, and over 100 million
Indian families use smoky and hazardous
kerosene for their lighting purposes, not
too many organizations worried about why
this deprivation of modern lighting is still
prevalent, and while most of the
organizations either shrugged of the
responsibility, or brushed it aside for
reasons of not being economically viable, It
was NEST which took up this cause as a
mission and pursued its dream of “Eliminating Light Poverty.”
The above picture illustrates the ‘light’ disparity in the world. One half of the globe so well lit that spotting stars is a rarity; the other half in complete darkness.
About the Founder:
Mr. DT Barki, the founder chairman of NEST has been in the solar photovoltaic industry for the last
25 years. A B.Tech graduate in Electronics Engineering (1982) from KREC (now NITK), Surathkal,
India, he has earned international reputation with solar PV technologies, through successful
implementation of several solar projects (cells, modules and systems). He has toured all over the
world to attend national & international conferences, workshops, and business meets on the
industry. He applies his scientific, technical, and management expertise to all aspects of the
challenge to implement sustainable energy services, especially solar PV globally, for the benefit of
people and the planet. He has extensive knowledge in setting up solar cell manufacturing units and
running them successfully. Mr.Barki has several shop floor contributions in inventing many defect
analysis methods in solar cell and module processing. He has won the ELCINA (national) award for
the indigenisation of crystalline PV cells production during his service at BHEL, Bangalore.
After having worked in BHEL, Bangalore for 12 years he came to Hyderabad and served in several
private organisations and was instrumental in setting up both cell and module lines during his
service.
In 1998 Mr. Barki embarked on a journey to provide light to the people living in darkness and
founded NEST that has served many people today. He has clearly laid the foundational values for
NEST to carry forward the mission of “Eliminating Light Poverty” in a much more concerted
manner, this being the hallmark of a true visionary.
His technological and social skills are to bring light to life; because he believes that
Life is Light; Light is Life.
Methodology:
Nicholas D. Kristoff has written an article titled ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ in which he has
addressed an approachable methodology towards Sustainable Development in the world. He cites
many working examples wherein the enterprises with a social cause are proving to be highly
beneficial to the people in the developing countries. Nest has taken to heart this idea, and with its
technological and management expertise has made tremendous progress in making sustainable
development a global reality.
Projects and Activities:
1. NEST has pioneered in the design and development of AISHWARYA®, an affordable solar
mini lamp for the rural households across the world.
2. NEST will always work to develop new solar lighting products and nurture innovative
lighting projects to realize its mission of Eliminating Light Poverty in the world. We are
currently working on the design and development of solar LED lantern in association with
Sankeerna Technologies Inc., USA, who have developed a unique, patented LED filament. It
is AISHWARYA® in a new avatar and is named AISHWARYASUN‐KIRAN360.
3. NEST is working on producing low cost solar grade (SoG) silicon for polysilicon producers
across the world.
4. Solar Lantern Charging Stations: Noble Energy Solar Technologies Ltd (NEST) had developed AISHWARYA® solar lamps as affordable options for the rural poor to replace their unsafe kerosene lamps. With the advent of Ashden Light Award 2005, AISHWARYA® solar lamp became global solar product. While this solar lamp has a section of rural poor who can afford AISHWARYA® solar lamps, there are many who cannot buy the lamp, though low‐cost, by making down payment.
The Team, Technology and Commercialization:
NEST has the most experienced solar and electronics specialists on its Board of Directors. In brief,
NEST knows the true art of Science, Technology & Engineering with the necessary commercial
expertise to make sustainable solar energy technology, a sustainable business venture.
Quality:
NEST aims to become the leading supplier in its chosen markets and acknowledges that it can
achieve and maintain this goal through the highest level of commitment to providing the best
quality and the best price,
Therefore, to ensure that all products are manufactured to the highest standards, a stage by stage
inspection and assessment is carried out during manufacturing. This assessment culminates in final
and full functionality testing, and each year a substantial proportion of revenue is invested in
product research and development programs, with a highly qualified and experienced team of
engineers working to enhance and improve existing products, as well as pursue innovative new
ideas.
Our Solar Lighting products are kept for regular evaluation under actual using conditions. The solar
lamps are tested and Evaluated by national laboratories like ETDC (Electronic Test Development
Center).
Our Unique Manufacturing Facility:
Nest is a global player as manufacturer and supplier of solar lighting solutions. Our flagship brand
AISHWARYA is an Ashden Light Award winning solar lamp. We have an exciting range of solar
lanterns, Solar Home Lighting, and Solar street light systems. Also, we manufacture whole range of
crystalline silicon solar modules.
In NEST, we do things differently. Our manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad and Bangalore
are the manifestation of our mission and vision. Our solar module and system assembly
facilities are characterized by efficient, effective and the most economical infrastructure.
This is one of the reasons why our solar products are of highest quality and yet with the
lowest cost.
Our state‐of‐the art solar module manufacturing facility is situated at Bangalore.
The Solar Systems assembly line is situated in Hyderabad, AP India.
