WIT AND WISDOM Life is a combination of adjustments and

compromises. Adjust when someone wants to be withyou, and compromise when you want to be withsomeone.

Relationships these days are harder now becauseconversations become texting, arguments becomephone calls and feelings become status.

Good people are like street lights along the roads. They do not make the distance short but they light upthe path and make the walk.

The most useful asset of a person is not a head fullof knowledge. But a heart full of love with ears open tolisten and hands willing to help.

What is done is done. What is gone is gone. One oflife's lessons is always moving on. It is okay to lookback and think of fond memories but keep movingforward.

Character is greater than beauty, Humanity is greaterthan wealth but nothing is greater than keepingrelations alive.

Do everything with a good heart and expect nothing inreturn, and you will never be disappointed.

It is very easy to give example but it is very difficult tobecome an example.

Never leave a true relation for few faults. Nobody isperfect. Nobody is correct and at the end, affection isalways greater than perfection.

A correct decision can double the confidence and awrong decision can double the experience. So no needto worry about both situations, just continue to put inyour efforts.

Always end your day with a positive thought. No matterhow hard today was, tomorrow is a new day filled withpossibilities.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Flexibility in Technical Education System

The technological changes aretaking place very fast andparticularly with free and rapidacquisition of newtechnologies. These changesare very much accelerated. The methodology for effectingtechnologies needs to beflexible to cater the fastchanging requirements. The

fast technological revolutions are causing new kind ofcomplexities leaving organizations at diverse level oftechnologies but coping to update technologicalchanges and thus demanding a flexible approach. Thus new technologies are providing adequatepotential to create flexibility in systems. It is a verystrange fact that our constitution has laid adequatestress on fundamental rights of the citizen of ourgreat nation but probably architects of constitution didnot realize very much the need for adequate attentionon fundamental duties. There is always need forbalance between duties and responsibilities on onehand and rights and privileges on the other hand. Weas a nation have got to realize that for achievingexcellence in any field, Quality and Accountabilityhas to go in hand.

We have to work hard and learn to work togetheras a team if we have to make the nation prosperousand stronger. The common goal is human growth insocio political order and this has got to imbibe thesense of social responsibility which can be wellenriched with the democratic virtues of self-disciplineand humanly oriented will. Excellence achieved byindividual, group or institution must be recognized, appreciated and rewarded. By adopting such anapproach, a humanistic and growth oriented efficientsystem will be developed. Swami Vivekananda hassaid, “No nation can become great or achieveprosperity without its people developing a sense ofself-discipline, social responsibility and co-operativework attitude.”

Remarkable change is observed if our publicservice activ ities get infused with an enlightenedcitizenship awareness and humanistic motto. If a manas a person, as an enlightened citizen becomes anemployee of public service organization, humanvalues become manifest and enrich the work of the

system qualitatively. Such persons think themselvesas a free citizen of our country devoted to performservice to the people of the country and not a mereemployee. This real concept transforms his work intomission and a commitment to nation. This realityenhances the dignity of the person from a mere paidservant into a useful instrument for human purpose.Bernard Shaw once said, “The true joy in life is to beused for a purpose which you consider mighty”.

Each one of us has to recognize ourresponsibilities and has to keep the motto that onehas to contribute towards continuous improvement inwellbeing of our nation. The following values deserveutmost attention for achieving the above mentionedgoal such as a) Service to Nation, b) Harmony andCo-operation, c) Fairness, d) Courtesy and Humility,e) Struggle for Improvement, f) Adjustment andAssimilation, g) Gratitude. The integrated effect ofabove given parameters will result into omnidirectionaldevelopment of human resource management, assuch attitudes imbibe:

(i) respect for dignity and inherent worth(ii) self-discipline, human concern and practical

efficiency(iii)thrust to dynamism and humanistic orientation(iv) improvement in inter-human relationship in all

walks of life (including technical education)(v) sense of duty, punctuality, co-operation and

commitmentOur technical education system should be

adaptive and provide good understanding of HumanValues and Social Ethics among Engineering,Pharmacy, Management, Architecture and otherprofessionals at all levels. In the present scenario, globalisation would provide melting pot of diversetraditions and cultures, and in such situation basicissues of right, wrong, ethics, values, morality, equality and social justice need appropriateintrospection and understanding. The young studentsof engineering and other professional programmesmust be made fully aware to understand theimplications of their decisions and actions.

VISHWAKARMA YOJANA :CONNECTING YOUTH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF VILLAGES

1. BackgroundTrue Academic value of any course is realized only if

class room sessions are complemented by industryorientation, international exposure or field trips andinternships. This kind of practical training experienceshave multiple, proven benefits for students, teachers, communities, and learning institutions. Since practicallearning requires a great deal of effort from everyoneinvolved, participants in a project can find motivation bylearning about the potential benefits of a project beforebeginning it.

Field projects allow students to develop in numerousways that can have lifelong benefits. First, gaining practicalexperience puts education theory into practice and therebymakes it more relevant. Practical experience also allowspeople to learn in a variety of ways (Lee, Bush, and Smith2005). Furthermore, real-world learning prepares you forfurther education, for careers, and for communityinvolvement. It is difficult to overestimate the value oflearning by doing. Students who transition well from highschool to college and from college to the workplace arethose who switch from being receivers of information tobeing seekers of information; they take responsibility fortheir learning.

Second, those who engage in service learning tend tobe more satisfied with their lives. Serving others makesthe server feel good. Those who engage in shared taskssuch as community service feel greater life satisfaction, personal control, vitality, and social support later in life(Harlow and Cantor 1996).

Third, Practical learning has been shown to enhanceknowledge and skills and to improve self-esteem whenstudents enter the workforce. Benefits includedimprovements in academic achievement, problem-solvingskills, character, and social behavior. Additional benefitsinclude being exposed to new careers, feeling strongercommunity ties, and feeling a desire for continued civicengagement.

In today’s increasingly global and interconnected world, over half of the world’s population lives in urban areasalthough there is still substantial variability in the levels ofurbanization across countries. The coming decades willbring further profound changes to the size and spatialdistribution of the global population. By looking theurbanization scenario, if the work-based activity in whichstudents are engaged in learning through practicalexperiences in rural areas because in India, Ruralpopulation comprises of nearly 70% of the country’s totalpopulation.

It has become necessary for the youth of today to knowand understand the rural life and its social, cultural andeconomic ramifications.

2. About Project & Role of Young TechnocratsVishwakarma Yojana is one of the initiatives towards

Rurbanization by Government of Gujarat, which was allottedas a pilot project to the Gujarat Technological University. The students and Faculty Members meet all the stake-holdersin a village, survey the existing facilities. Then they re-imagineand re-design the whole of the infrastructure of the village. The students use their engineering skills to prepare detailedproject reports for the infra-structure as a part of their FinalYear project work. Through the Yojana, the students of GTUare getting real work experience and are able to apply theirtechnical knowledge and practices to a real problem. Thisentails hard work, many strenuous visits to the village andlong discussions with the various stake-holders.

Vishwakarma Yojana is one of the approach for ruralinfrastructure development based on the concept of providingbasic sustainable urban infrastructure to the rural population. The main aim of the project is “

“Vishwakarma Yojana” has provided the platform for realworld experience to engineering students andsimultaneously apply their technical knowledge in the ruralinfrastructure development. From the Techno Economicsurvey, Students have been identified the existing issuesprevailing in villages and made the recommendations on theapplication of technology to achieve integrated andcomprehensive development, through detail project reportpreparation and management. The approach likeVishwakarma Yojana is step towards nation development.3. Project Team
