If you are a fairly new diver and have never dove in warm water – this is a must trip for you. You will be surrounded by friends and fellow divers who are always there to assist and support. There is nothing more comforting as a new diver than being on a dive trip with lots of friends. If you are an experienced diver and haven’t been in warm water with 80 to 100 foot viz in awhile – what are you waiting for! And for our Non-diver members and friends.... you will have a great time on the island as well – swimming with dolphins, snorkeling, zip lining, shopping, hiking, island touring, and hanging out with a group of really fun divers! So LAST CALL for Anthony’s Key, Roatan – set aside one week in July for a truly fantastic vacation at an unbelievable price. Contact Mike Doyon at [email protected] or (805)278-7075. Bottom Times from your President

As we inch towards daylight savings (March 12th) we can begin to look forward to longer days, warmer weather and extra time for enjoying ‘the good life’. And of course, your Dive Club offers many ways to enjoy these days with our weekend hikes, dive trips and social gatherings.

It is for this reason that I decided to dedicate this bottom times to our Roatan trip coming up July 15 - 22. We are so looking forward to this week diving in warm water, counting the many different colors of Seahorses, swimming with dolphins and snagging a quiet hammock somewhere on the island to read a good book and take a nap. Then wrapping up the day with friends at dinner sharing stories of the day.

Cuba, the mystic and the truth

On December 29th,

we met up with Ken’s group and spent 2 more days in Havana

doing “governmental cultural experiences”. On 12/31 we took a bus to our next fantastic experience diving

on the liveaboard, the Aggressor. We had a great dive experience with crocodiles and lots of sharks. The

crew was Cuban and the water was pristine. We dove in Las Jardinas de la Reina, The Garden of the

Queen, which is a marine preserve along the western coast of Cuba. Fidel had the wisdom to preserve this

area 20 years ago from over fishing.

Ken's part of the presentation will have some overlap from when they started in Havana till when they arrived back to Havana to go home. Come join us for a great presentation about Cuba.

Our story will be observations and experiences with the Cuban communism, specifically what it is like to live

in a country that has been “frozen” in time for 58 years. It’s been “58 anos de la revolucion” – that’s 58 since

Fidel Castro took over as Dictator of this country. The people were wonderful those 4 days and we enjoyed

ourselves. This experience will be the first part of our presentation including the history of Cuba and the

Revolution and the present day life in Cuba including some history of Guantanamo Bay, the Bay of Pigs

(where the separation of Cuba and U.S. A. all started) and many interesting facts.

CUBA, THE MYSTIQUE & THE TRUTH

On December 26th, early morning 2016 the Booths, Paul and Angie and the Sisting’s, Don & Brandee trav-

eled to the little known island of Cuba. We arrived in Havana International Airport in the morning and left

early afternoon with the host of our AirBnB house, Serapio. We started our stay in Cuba 4 days earlier than

the group that traveled with Ken Kollwitz because we wanted to live and talk to the Cuban people. We had 4

very different days, visiting and walking around on our own.

ELECTION OF BOARD OF DIRECTORS

The Channel Islands Diver bylaws call for the annual election of all board positions.

Nominations for all board positions shall be accepted at the June, July & August meetings.

Officers shall be elected by written ballot.

Those getting there names in will be included on the ballots.

Ballots shall have a place for write ins.

The officers shall be elected at the September meeting for a period of one year.

Ballots will be counted by volunteers appointed at the general meeting.

The election results will be announced at the completion of the counting.

More information to follow or simply ask any board member, we know things!

The Annual Channel Islands Divers Picnic and general good time event. Refugio State Beach on Saturday, September the 9th.

The club will be providing as always, the water, lemonade, salt/pepper, mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise,

the yummy tri-tip, juicy chicken and that mouth watering bratwurst BBQ’d to perfection as always, led by

one of our very own Robert Soriano and his crew of BBQ perfectionist and trust me when I say these

folks know what their doing. Also for your dining enjoyment the club provides the bread, lots and lots of

bread, toasted, buttered with garlic. We’ll be providing a selection of some of our finest paperware plates

and the napkins so you can wipe your hands making it easier for you to hold the utensils needed for the

enormous task in front of you. This so you don’t have to use your freshly wiped hands to eat with. We try

to plan for all such contingency’s, forward thinking and all that.

All club members in attendance will be the recipient of one free ticket for the much anticipated door prize

drawing with prizes too numerous to mention in this short article. No tickets will be sold giving every club

member in attendance that much sought after level playing field. It’s going to be huge!

Refugio has some great facilities and a super fantastic beach for diving.

If you would like to dive, there are 2 main reefs at Refugio and is an excellent beach for launching kayaks

and paddle boards from. Stay tuned for announcements on any and all activities planned.

Getting yourself a reserved camping spot at Refugio already started back on March 1st and at this reading it could very well be sold out. Give it a shot. Just click here ReserveAmerica.com

Better still….. Mike Doyon has a spare Refugio campsite available for any member who might want it. The reservation is

$95 and for Friday and Saturday nights, Sept. 8 - 9. Email him for details! [email protected]

Turns out the 2016 Christmas party was a big hit with both

John Wolfe and Teri Scarpino who not only were in

attendance but had their names drawn from that event. John

made off with a pair of Tulsa fins donated back to the club

from Mike Cunningham while Teri Scarpino lugged away

Name that vehicle and no, it’s not dive related so there’s no Latin name needed.

Ever heard of the Cuban embargo? It’s been around since the early 60’s. They could not get newer American cars or even parts for the ones they had. It has the appearance of everything automobile related is frozen in time. They kept

them running and on the road all these years and we have a few photo’s of 60 year old ‘new’ cars.

Your task, tell me everything about this one.

Some talented Cuban took this otherwise nice older car, kept most of it

up and looking like it was stuck frozen in time, and then for reasons

unknown to the rest of us converted it into a dump truck, a nice looking

dump truck but still, a dump truck!

There’s enough showing to guess what it is, was or used to be.
