CDPS Donation to the Cobden Curling Club

Students Ethan & Dakota present Mrs. Helen Francis of the Cobden Curling

Club with a cheque for $268.50 (at left). This money was raised by

Dakota and Ethan by baking and selling muffins to

each class in the school over the course of the school year.

Mrs. MacKenzie (at far right in photo) enjoyed teaching these two students

many important Life Skills in the process of baking and selling these muffins.

Special thanks to the Cobden Civitan Club for their generous donation to make this important program happen.

This proactive program is presented to grade 6 students, and deals with many topics relevant to teenagers. The D.A.R.E. curriculum is designed to be taught by police officers whose training and experience gave them the back-ground needed to answer the sophisticated questions often posed by young students about drugs and crime. The Police Officer in the school is regarded as a role model who is a credible resource when speaking about drug and alcohol issues. The D.A.R.E. program introduces a police officer into a classroom setting with a focus on an interactive approach with the students. A uniformed police officer provides students with: – skills on how to avoid drugs, gangs and violence – the consequences of smoking, doing drugs and drinking alcohol – information on peer pressure, bullying and good citizenship.

Seventeen schools competed in the West County softball tourna-ment at the Civic Center in Petawawa in early-June. It was a hot day, and we played a total of seven games to secure the champion-ship. There’s a great looking new banner hanging in the office foyer for you all to admire. A 3-3 tie game with Pineview lasted until Tristen & Jake scored for the win in the final inning. It was an exciting way to start the day. Final score: 5-3 Cobden. In the next game against Eganville, we did well to get runners on base, but couldn’t score. Eganville got us by two runs. Our third match was against Lourdes. Once again, we pulled out of a tie bringing in four quick runs and holding the lead without further challenge: 5-1 final. The fourth round-robin game was against Mackenzie. Four runs in the second was good for the 4-2 victory. We battled Valour in the quarter final. Cooper, Khloe, Jake, Allie, Thomas, and Marika all scored in the 8-5 victory. In the semi final, we met Cathedral. The final against Eganville was a tight one. We had an amazing first bat: Cooper, Khloe, Allie, Thomas, and Ty put us up five runs. EDPS edged closer and closer. This was the greatest test of our composure under pressure, and we

It’s no coincidence that a championship team would be backed by parents who are highly invested in their kids. Several were able to be there to help out and be a part of the fun. Thanks to Marc Ber-trand for helping with practices and sharing his expertise and love of the game, thanks to Kerri Bertrand and Aime Ciphery for coaching runners and keeping things lively, thanks ever so much to Joel Scheuneman for hauling our gear all day, and thanks to Kim Tinney, Lee Denty, Kristy & Carmen Rye, Caryn Wattie, Jennifer Leach, and Steve & Brianna Scott for being there to support the team as well. Championship Team Members: Cooper, Khloe, Jake, Allie, Paityn, Thomas, Abbey, Bailey, Ty, Marika, Yzer & Ambrose. Mrs. Burgess commends you all for your im-pressive skills and depth of character. Thanks for a perfect day.

Team:

Brent, Paige, Hayley, Wesley, Emma M., Mackenzie, Os-

car, Eryka, Keegan, Austin, Tom, Travis, Tim, Emma P.,

Devan, Kiannah, Cassie, Michelle, Justin, Andrew, Dylan

Coach: Mrs. Phelan

The soccer tournament took place on a very hot and sunny

June 8th 2017. Our first game against McNab was tied for

most of the game 1-1 ( headed in by Keegan ), unfortu-

nately with seconds left in the game McNab scored. Our

2nd game against EDPS was a great game with us win-

ning 3-0, goals scored by Justin, Keegan and Wes. Our

3rd game against St. Joe's (Arnprior) was a tough game

with them taking the win. This brought us to the Quarterfi-

nals, where we played and defeated St. Joe's (Renfrew).

with Devan scoring our winning goal. In the Semifinals we

played McNab again. It was a fantastic soccer match and

they ended up scoring the only goal in the last

minute of play. All in all it was a great

day and Mrs. Phelan is extremely proud

of her team!

During the week of June 5-8, many of our Grade 4-8 students partici-

pated in the Renfrew County Community Track & Field Meets hosted by Ope-

ongo High School and Arnprior District High School (Bill Tyrrell Meet). Mrs. Broome would like to extend a sincere thank you to all staff, stu-

dents and parents who supported our Track and Field program. This year, 45

Cobden students participated, with athletes representing our school communi-

ty with pride and athletic ability. Despite the rain in Arnprior, our athletes demonstrated solid running,

jumping and throwing skills and Cobden achieved 3rd place in the “C” Divi-

sion, in addition to the numerous other personal successes and ribbons

throughout the day. The next day, many of these same athletes competed in the sunshine at

Opeongo and once again demonstrated the leadership and expertise that

allowed for a safe, successful and enjoyable day for all. Mrs. Broome would like to offer special thanks to our Intermediate stu-

dents for their leadership in helping our younger athletes get to their events on

time, stay dry and ensure they would encounter Cobden cheers and support at

each of their events. Many Cobden students received top-3 finishes throughout both days.

The highlights are too numerous to list, but all athletes are congratulated on

Special Thanks to our dedicated coaches: Mrs. Broome, Mrs. Barr, Mr. Alexander & Mr. Grady!

CDPS FUN FAIR 2017

Attendees for our CDPS Annual Fun Fair

enjoyed sunny skies and warm weather.

Once again, it was an outstanding evening

of fun for the whole community as you can

see by these photos. Many thanks to all

community members, parents, students and

staff who volunteered. Your help and contri-

butions, as always, go a long way to making

this event a big success. Our total for the even-

ing was over

$10,000.

THANK YOU to all of the volunteers who helped with the planning, organizing, running of events and the cleanup. It truly takes many hands and the sup-port of our families and the community to make this a successful evening. The funds raised are put towards projects and school activities and ensure that every student has a chance to participate and benefit. We wish everyone a wonderful summer and hope to see some new and familiar faces in the fall.

Sincerely, CDPS Parent Council Members

A Big THANK YOU to Mrs. Benson for

her many hours planning and

organizing Fun Fair.

Your dedication to this event

ensures that it is a success

each year.

Thank you as well, to all the staff
