Pete is an enthusiastic

gardener with extensive

allotments in Whittlesey.

He often produces record-

breaking crops and this

year — as well as a hand-

ful of certificates — Pete

returned with a handsome

silver cup.

A Lancaster Salutes our Heritage Weekend The car-park was deserted as spectators crowded across the lawns to see this RAF WWII Lancaster on its flight to salute the new Eastrea Centre on Saturday 20 July. The plane swooped low across the hall in a clover-leaf course, roaring back across the vil-lage and dipping its wings in salute. We are very grateful to Wing Commander Martin Thorner and Mr Richard Kearns of RAF Molesworth for helping us to arrange this memorable moment of Eastrea history. Crowds (below) took photos and video as the aircraft roared back across the farmland towards Peterborough in the west.

HUNDREDS OF visitors joined in

the celebration of our first-ever

Heritage Weekend at the new

Eastrea Centre. With traditional

folk music, exhibits of old maps of

Eastrea and press cuttings, face

painting, a portrait artist, singers

and musicians plus the village

hall’s first-ever disco, with stalls

showing huge live reptiles and

memorabilia for people to buy as

souvenirs, plus our first dog show

… this truly was a weekend to

remember. The next is planned for

Saturday 7 September 2013.

Village Hall gains a new path

for those using wheelchairs

After being seriously affected

by a stroke, Mayfield Road

resident Mrs Susan Roach

found how hard it can often be

to make others understand

what you want to express.

None the less, her message

to the Village Hall Trust was

clear enough — gravel in front

of the entrance was a problem

for people who rely on a

wheelchair.

Our photograph (right)

shows work on the new paved

pathway that now links the

asphalt pavement direct to the

area of the main entrance.

As well as helping users of

wheelchairs, the path is crucial

for parents with buggies.

HIVE OF ACTIVITY during the Heritage Weekend (below). The event, widely reported in the press, attracted hundreds of local residents and visitors from further afield. The weekend took over £2,000.

DANGEROUS

DOG CASE

IN COURT MR HERBERT HATTON of Wype Road was in the dock of the magistrate’s court in Peterborough on Thursday 8 August. He faces charges of being a ‘person in charge of a dog allowing it to be dangerously out of control in a public place and cause injury on 28 June 2013’. Eastrea Village News has been told by court officials that the case has now been adjourned to 10.00 am on Thursday 22 August.

ANCIENT MAPS of Eastrea (above) provided this fascinating exhibit that helped to launch last month’s Heritage Weekend. This project was funded in part by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

HISTORY WAS MADE on Thurs 1 August when Mr Jeff Moody (with some of his students above) started the very first class at the new Eastrea Centre, Tai Chi. Mr Moody hoped for 6 students and had 13; in the second week the number grew to 23. There are different classes now planned for every weekday from ‘quilting’ to ‘keep fit’ and already they ensure that the Eastrea Centre is running on a secure financial basis.
