Law Day Display Law Day is recognised in the US on May 1st every year. The 2019 theme was Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”. In commemoration of the day the Supreme Court Law Library created a display which depicts a time- line poster that intricately maps 25 of the most important free speech and free press moments in U.S. history. It also features a graphic representa- tion of newspaper articles inspired by the Law Day theme, some of which dates back to 1901. In addition to the timeline poster and the newspaper articles, we have also included hand selected treatises on the theme. You are invited to view our display anytime Mon.- Fri., 7:45 am - 4:30 pm. Editorial Welcome to our first issue of Nā Hoa Kānāwai - a quarterly electronic publication of news, information and stories from the Supreme Court Law Library. We are excited to launch this newsletter be- cause we want you to be informed about activities and events happening in and around our library. In this and subsequent publications we will also share information about local library activities within the judiciary and other little tidbits to inform, educate and humor you. Did you Know? ...that the library has a wide variety of resources for patron referrals? The newest resource is our Legal Service Providers (LSP) toolkit - a compact, pocket-sized tool that can be used to access all in- formation regarding LSPs. Its organized by subject matter and LSP name and provides a brief over- view of the services of- fered by each LSP. Pret- ty neat! HI 96813 Circuit Corner The Third Circuit Court Law Library is offering two new services! A Self-Help program of retired judges and lawyers volunteering to offer free legal assis- tance to the public on a first come first served basis, every Wednesday from 11am - 1pm. Most areas are covered, except for criminal matters. Also, the Hawaii State Judiciary Center for Al- ternative Dispute Resolu- tion offer mediation ser- vices every Thursday in the Library Meeting Rooms. This service is offered as an alternative to going to court. Laughable or Law Suit? A monkey named Naruto, used a nature photographers camera to take a selfie. The photographer claimed copyright of the photo and it was pub- lished in a 2011 book called Wildlife Personalities. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) an animal rights group, filed suit in San Francisco, claiming that Naruto, not the photographer, owns the copyright to the photo and that Naruto should be the financial benefi- ciary of all proceeds from the use of the photo. The lawsuit was thrown out by a federal judge citing the U.S. Copyright Of- fices' view that only human beings can hold copyrights. PETA later filed an appeal with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Law Day is recognised in the US on May 1st every year. The 2019 theme was “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society”.
