SHS Students on Track in a Positive Direction Springfield Heights students are working hard to make our school an even better envi-

ronment for all. They are working towards a positive attitude of having the courage

and wisdom to be respectful, responsible and safe. During the month of October, stu-

dents and teachers focused on positive behavior on the playground. Children were

given a puzzle piece when they made positive contributions at recess time. They

would then add their piece to a bucket in the office to try and fill it by week's

end. They achieved their goal twice and the school

celebrated with two extra long recesses!

Going forward SHS students will review the Solution

Wheel at a school-wide assembly as well as in

class. The Solution Wheel is a visual reminder of

various options that students have on hand to make

better choices. As teachers recognize students mak-

ing good choices, students will have an opportunity

to have their name in a draw. There will be oppor-

tunities to win various prizes from the draw selec-

tion. Throughout the year SHS students will work

towards staying on track by making positive

choices.

Literacy Corner Parents, try out these strategies for finding “Just Right” books for your child to read at home: Just-Right Books Ask yourself these questions. If you answer yes, this book is probably a “JUST-RIGHT” book for you. “Just right” books help you learn the most because you can figure out most of the words and you understand what’s going on in the text. 1. Is this an interesting book that you want to read? 2. Are you familiar with the content, author, series, genre? 3. Can you tell another person what is happening in the story and/or what you’re learning? 4. Do you sometimes need to reread a part to understand it? 5. Are there just a few words per page you don’t know? 6. When you read are most places smooth and some choppy?

Throughout the day, everyone's mind is filled with many different thoughts that affect our feelings and behaviours. Negative thoughts we have can make us feel worse when we are already feeling sad, worried or frustrated. When faced with a challenge, it is easy to become discouraged and to think unhelpful thoughts that could prevent us from making an effort or from being successful. This negative self-talk can become so com-mon that we may not even realize that we are doing it.

Stopping negative thoughts isn’t easy and it starts with actually noticing those thoughts. Learning how to change our "cloudy thoughts" into "sunny thoughts" is an important skill that will help children build resiliency and self-esteem. By discussing positive thinking with your child and giving him/her lots of words of encouragement, you can have a huge impact on their emotional well-being and sense of self-worth. Here are some ways to change a “cloudy thought” into a “sunny thought”: What can I say to myself?

-Mme. Thorsteinson

Instead of… Try thinking…

I’m not good at this. What am I missing?

This is too hard. This may take some time and effort.

I can’t make this any better. I can always improve, so I’ll keep trying.

I just can’t do Math. I’m going to train my brain in Math.

He/She is so smart. I will never be that smart. I’m going to figure out how she does it so I can try

it!

It’s good enough. Is it really my best work?

Plan A didn’t work. Good thing the alphabet has 25 more letters!

Resource Corner Skipper’s Friendship Net Check out the new bulletin board from the Inclusion Committee! This year we are highlighting every student in Springfield Heights School by taking pictures of them playing and learning with their peers. A sense of belong-ing is one of the main elements of inclusion. All of the students in each grade will be on display for one month in the front hallway. We are passionate about ensuring that children have positive connections with peers and adults. We want all students to know that they have an important place in our school community and in our hearts. -Mme Boily & Mrs. Kuran

During the month of November, our classroom buddy groups met to learn about peace. Students had the opportunity to read books, watch videos, and engage in conversation about what peace looks and feels like in our community. Buddy groups com-pleted various creative projects to demonstrate their learning and understanding of what peace means. Below are a few pic-tures of the art projects some groups completed.

Peacefulness at SHS

Skipper’s network of Friendship Staff and students at SHS recognize the importance of friendships and belonging and how

each and every one of us is a valued for our unique characteristics. Each month, one grade

level is recognized for their friendships by having pictures displayed on our Skipper’s bulletin

board. Feel free to come by and take a peek the next time you are in our school!

Student News... K-Kids News

The Dream Factory During the week of October 26th – 30th the K-kids organized several fun activities to create awareness and raise funds for The Dream Factory. It is a non-profit, local organization that helps kids battling life-threatening illnesses realize their dreams. Some of the activities our students planned were “pin the hat on the witch” and a “candy guessing jar”. Students also had the opportunity to vote for their favorite pumpkin. We were able to raise over $400! All money raised will be going directly to a child in the com-munity.Thank you to everyone for all of your support! Plastic Bag Round-up During the month of October, students were asked to collect plastic bags as part of

a recycling initiative from Multi Material Stewardship Manitoba. Congratulations to

our Grade 4/5 Ukrainian students who as a class collected the most bags! Well done

everyone and thank you for all of your support!

On Monday, November 9th, the students and staff of

Springfield Heights School took part in a Remembrance

Day Ceremony. The Ceremony began with the

reading of a story, “Proud as a Peacock, Brave as a

Lion” by Jane Barclay, read by Connor C. and Jenna.

The students from room 7 and 16 then shared their

thoughts on Peace. ``Every Child is a Promise`` was

beautifully sung by the grade 4/5 choir. To com-

memorate the 100th anniversary of the very fa-

mous poem “In Flanders Field”, by John McCrae,

the grade 2/3 choir recited the poem in all 3 lan-

guages spoken at our school. The ceremony ended

with the laying of the wreath by Jack and guest trum-

peter Bryson playing ``The Last Post``, followed by a

moment of silence and the Reveille. Thank you to

Nelaya, Jonah, Ella and Jack from room 16 for sharing

Remembrance Day thoughts throughout our

ceremony.

On November 16, students in our Grade 5 We Kids club had the amaz-ing opportunity to attend We Day at the MTS Centre! It was a day of celebration of the impact made by Manitoba We Schools over the last year as well as a way to get inspired to continue making a difference. Craig and Mark Kielburger, the founders of Free the Children, kicked off the show with their story about how it all started. Spencer West, who lost both of his legs at

the age of five, talked about the challenges he has overcome and how his determination enabled him to climb Mount Kilimanjaro using his hands and wheelchair. There were many other motivational speakers including Henry Winkler, former U.S. Army soldier JR Martinez, Tom Jackson and Aboriginal youth Rinelle Harper. Marlee Matlin's speech was particularly moving as she spoke about her perseverance in her chosen career despite be-ing discouraged by others. The students and teachers from SHS left We Day feeling in-spired, empowered and ready to make a difference! Stay tuned for our upcoming initia-tives this year, including We Are Rafikis and We Are Silent, and how you can help us make a positive change locally and internationally!

Rafiki Chains

The WE Kids will be selling Rafiki chains to sup-port Free the Children efforts in Kenya during our Christmas concerts on December 15th and 16th in the front hall. There are five different chains to choose from which support the ac-cess to water, healthcare, education, food and income sustainability. Each chain is handmade by a mother in Kenya and has a code to track your support online. WE Kids will be learning more about their ability to create positive change locally and internationally by partici-pating in this effort, along with several other exciting initiatives this year. Chains are $10 and are a beautiful gift with a purpose. http://shop.metowe.com/gifts/ water-rafiki-friend-chain-empowerment

Patrols I would like to thank all of the Springfield Heights Safety Patrol Team for the fine job they have been doing during the months of September and Octo-ber. I must say that this is a responsible group of students who take their jobs very seriously. Please join me in congratulating the following patrols who will be our street patrol captains for the year: Teanna, Rae, Elijah, Ciara, Lizzy, Qetso, and Annika. We’ve had a busy month of patrol events. Some of our patrols will be attending the Manitoba Moose game on December 13 at the MTS Center. The patrols will be lucky enough to receive a Moose toque, antlers and a puzzle. Our free time in the gym in Oc-tober and November was well attended by all the patrols. There will be a movie at Silver City: St Vital on December 9. On Novem-ber 19, we went roller skating at Wheelies. We can also look forward to hot chocolate on those c-c-c-c-cold mornings.

There now is a link on our school website to the cold weather guidelines for street patrols. I encourage all families to refer to this link for guidance as to how long patrols should be on post and how they should dress for those chilly days. Please remember to use the temperature at the Forks as your guideline.

If you have any questions, concerns or compliments regarding our patrols please do not hesitate to call me at the school at 204-663-5078 or at my email address [email protected]. -Mrs. Marsh

Near the end of the show, Jake invited students and teachers to sing and dance up front with him. Thank you to all classes who came to participate and appreciate the French culture together! EUBP Students Participate in the Myloserdia Humanitarian Project This fall, the Kindergarten to grade 5 English Ukrainian Bilingual students worked with the Myloserdia Humanitarian Association of Ukrainian Volunteers. In this en-deavour, our students had the opportunity to give to children in need in Ukraine. Our students learned about Myloserdia, which mean charity, giving from the heart. In order to connect with the children of Ukraine, some classes wrote letters, while others made a card and sent pictures. We are hoping that these children will write back, and we will continue the connection until the end of the year. In light of the events that are taking place in Ukraine, there are many children whose lives are being affected. Our students donated clothing, toys, school supplies and money. This was then sent to orphanages in the cities of Ternopil, Lviv, Kharkiv and Odessa. These orphanages support children from war torn regions, displaced chil-dren and children with special needs. Our students also brought in donations to help offset the costs of shipping. Volunteer representatives from Myl-oserdia came to our school. Our students were involved with helping them wrap, pack and address the items for ship-ping. The intent is to have these items arrive at the orphanages in December, just in time for St. Nicholas Day. Thank you to MPUE for bringing this op-portunity to our attention. Thank you to all the students for participating and learning about such a worthwhile cause. Finally, a big thank you to the EUBP parents for supporting this effort in such a generous way. -Pani M. Loughren

Kozak Mamay Art by Grade 3-4 Students

The grade 3-4 students from the EUBP, under the direction of guest artist Pani Kulyk, learned about Kozak Mamay. They did Kozak Mamay sketches first. After, they began making their art pieces out of clay. Let us tell you... this might be our favourite activity EVER! Now we know that Cossack Mamay (Козак Мамай) is a Ukrainian folkloric hero that became the national personi-fication of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Cossack Mamay is encountered in legends, folk stories, and proverbs.

Holodomor Commemoration Week The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program grade 2 to 5 students visited the Canadian Museum for Human Rights on Novem-ber 25 for Holodomor Com-memoration Week. The stu-dents learned about human rights and responsibilities in interactive ways in the Mani-toba Teachers Society class-room and throughout the newest national museum. Thank you to Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education (MPUE) for making this educational field trip a reality! We learned this chant, " HUMAN RIGHTS FOR EVERYONE, NOT JUST THE CHOSEN FEW. EACH PERSON IS IMPORTANT, INCLUDING ME AND YOU!"

Congratulations to all Manitoban EUBP students for

receiving an international award from Ukrainian World Congress 2015 in Spain. We are all proud of your hard work!

Щирі вітання до усіх учнів з Англійсько-Української

Двомовної Програми! Наші учні отримали міжнародну

нагороду від Українського Світового Конгресу у 2015

році у Іспанії. Ми гордимося вами!

Room 29 Legislative Building Field Trip

On October 26, 2015 the Ukrainian program grades 4-5 children were invited on a field trip to the Legislative Building. Once we

got in, we waited for the other EUBP schools in Manitoba to come. We had the honor of meeting with the Minister of agricul-

ture! His name was Ron Кostyshyn. He knew some Ukrainian! After we went in and hanged up our clothing items, the tour guide

started by talking about the giant bison on each side of the marble stairs. One was named Mani and the other was Toba. If you’d

put the names together you’d get Manitoba! Also, she explained why there were heads under the pathway to walk through. She

said that the head, the one that is where you first walk in, is

the Greek god of wisdom. She also explained that if you were

to walk under the head, she’d give you some of her wisdom.

My favourite thing I learned was the story of Thomas Kelly.

Thomas Kelly was the construction boss of the Legislative

Building during early construction. Thomas Kelly was stealing

some of the parts to build his house. He lived about three

blocks away from the Legislative Building. Eventually it got no-

ticed that he was stealing and he was caught.

Allergies

Many Springfield Heights students have extreme allergies to different foods, in particular nuts and any nut product, oil or flour. The allergies range from mild to life threatening. Some children may have a reaction if an item is even in their proximity. As a nut-safe school, please do not send nuts or food containing nuts to school at any time. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all students safe.

Skating Party All our Grade 3 to 5 students will be allowed to go to the North Kildonan Community Club on the morning of Friday, December 18th the last day of school before the Christmas holidays, for our school’s annu-al Skating Party. Students are encouraged to bring skates, sticks, hockey/ringette equip-ment and a helmet is required to participate. The canteen will be open from 9:30am to 11:30am. We would greatly appreciate the help of 3 or 4 parent volunteers to help behind the coun-ter of the canteen. Transportation will allow skates to be brought on the bus that day and only if they are in a tote bag.

Volunteer Policy

We encourage volunteers in the school. All volunteers are required to complete a Child Abuse Registry form and a Pledge of Confidenti-ality form which are available in the office. All volunteers are asked to sign in at the office and to wear a volunteer name tag while vol-unteering at the school. The name tag will help students identify volunteers and visitors in the school and on the playground. Volun-teers need to sign out at the office when they are finished volunteer-ing for the day.

School Bus Cancellation

Beginning this winter, school divisions in metro Winnipeg will be using the temperature at The Forks as the indicator of severe weather. Previously, metro divisions checked the temperature at the Winnipeg Airport. The general rule is that if the wind chill is -45 C or colder at The Forks (as post-ed by Environment Canada at about 6:10 a.m.), all Winnipeg school divisions cancel buses for the whole day but schools usually remain open. If buses are cancelled, an alert will be posted on the RETSD division website home page. Major radio stations and local television will also announce busing cancellations. Cold weather also impacts school patrols. If the wind chill is between -27 C and -34 C, a patrol’s time at their post is not to exceed 10 minutes. If the wind chill is between -35 C and -40 C, patrols will only be at their posts for five minutes, and posts more than a five-minute walk from the school will not be patrolled. There will be no pa-trols on their posts when the wind chill is -40 C or colder.

For current information about SHS, important dates, announcements, contact info, helpful links, forms, etc.

please visit the Springfield Heights School Web Page located at:

http://www.retsd.mb.ca/Pages/home.aspx

Thank you for signing in

Visitors and volunteers to Springfield Heights School are requested to sign-in at the office. The purpose of this request is to help ensure the safety of our school and to manage the traffic congestion that can take place when visitors stop outside the classrooms in order to meet their children. We ask parents to meet their children outside. This keeps hallways clear and allows staff and students to identify those who are helping out in our classrooms.

Communicable Diseases

Please contact the school if your child develops a communi-cable disease e.g. Chicken Pox, Rubella (Measles), lice,

Fifth’s Disease etc. Please check with a physician about when it is advisable for your child to return to school. At

school we follow universal precautions of hand washing as often as possible, using tissues for noses and sneezes and

not sharing food, eating utensils or cups.

SHS Lunch Program

Curious about how we, as parents, organize supervision of our children during lunch? Ever wonder where your money goes? Want to get in-volved? The committee meets in the evening every 6-8 weeks. We determine the budget for the year, and support the program coordinator who is respon-sible for the day to day administration of the program.

Our next meeting will be in the new school year, January 5, 2016 at 5:30pm. If you want to get involved, contact the chair at [email protected].

English Parent Committee The EPC plans events for the English Program students and their families. Past events we have had are Folklorama, Family Fiesta, Learning Olym-pics, Eureka and Movie Night. We have also sent our students on year end field trips to IMAX, The Forks, Birds Hill Park, The Zoo and Kids Fest. Would you like to have your input? We need volunteers to sit on our committee and help plan these events. If you are not able to commit but would still like to help out, we are also in need of volunteers to help out the day of our specific events. Please contact me if you are interested with either of our volunteer op-

tions or for more information. Corinna Ducharme 204-831-9574 or
