PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Friends,

"When I see birches bend to the left and right ...

I like to think some boy’s been swinging them.

But swinging them doesn't bend them down to stay.

Ice-storms do that. ...

Soon the sun’s warmth makes them shed crystal shells

Shattering and avalanching on the snow-crust--

Such heaps of broken glass to sweep away

You'd think the inner dome of heaven had fallen."

- Robert Frost, Birches

Robert Frost, in Birches and in many of his other poems,

captured so well the natural beauty of New England. The mission

and charter of LP&CT is to make available and accessible 'special

places' in Lowell where one can enjoy nature at its best.

With a new year ahead of us, we look forward to pursuing

the connections between the Concord River Greenway and River

Meadow Brook. This would complete the Bay Circuit Trail

through Lowell.

Planting trees, lighting the fire in our youth through

educational programs, monitoring our properties, and engaging

the community remain a large part of our commitment.

We are fortunate to have a membership that shares our

goals. Your financial support and volunteerism is necessary and

so very much appreciated. LP&CT's wish for 2012 is that you

maintain your generosity.

Do take the time to visit our properties this winter and

enrich yourself with the poetry of Robert Frost.

Best wishes,

THANK YOU

“I learned how important

trees are to wildlife,” said one

girl after playing an interactive

game about habitat threats. The

Trust’s ‘Stewardship through

Leadership’ program continues to

thrive with after-school programs

at the Robinson Middle School,

the Freshman Academy at Lowell

High School, and starting this

winter at the Daley Middle

School.

Through school-yard explorations, students with

observant eyes and eager minds looked for everything from

insects to birds, observed leaf change/drop, and played games to

illustrate ecological concepts. These hands-on, outdoor

activities encourage students to ask questions and make

observations to learn about the important habitats in Lowell,

which at the same time expands and builds upon their in-school

science and math curricula.

Our outdoor sessions were complemented by in-class

animal visitors, including: mice, an American kestrel, a

groundhog, a wood turtle, a red tailed hawk, a corn snake, and a

rabbit (above). The most interesting aspect is seeing the change

in the students when they observe the animals. Their eyes

brighten and they are filled with questions like:

Do owls have predators? How do snakes lay eggs?

What types of birds stay here all winter?

Where are the owl’s ears?

In between observations and explorations, students

conducted stewardship projects

from planting gardens in the

school alley to mulching gardens

at the Concord River Greenway

Park (right). One of the most

exciting projects is a head-start

program for two young

snapping turtles (below). Their

growth in this protected

environment will enable them to

better avoid predators when they are

released in their native habitat this

spring.

As a member, you are

helping us make these connections! When students continue

from one program to the next, go onto higher education in a

related field, or enter a wildlife photograph in a local gallery

exhibit, we know the program is having impact. Your support

leverages that of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, the

Theodore Edson Parker Foundation, the Greater Lowell

Community Foundation, and Philips Medical Systems for this

program.

Through these strong connections to the habitats right

here in Lowell the students now have the tools, skills, and desire

to become stewards of these important places.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

To those that have gone above and beyond..

Soucy Ironworks for help with repairing a storm-damaged bird

bollard along the Concord River Greenway.

Nate Moore for unexpectedly raking the Spalding House lawn

and helping us create accurate GIS-based maps of our properties.

Charles Frean for Drupal updates on our website.

Martha Iarrapino and Sheila Hallisey, our newest land

stewards on the southern section of the Greenway.

Dan Wilson for putting feet on the ground to help route the

Bay Circuit Trail through Lowell.

The Merrimack Valley Housing Partnership, whose staff

collectively chose to donate to LP&CT at the holidays.

Taylor Noble for volunteering his time last summer (and

several others) to work alongside our staff in teaching

environmental education programs to local youth.

Artist Jay Hungate for patiently storing a carving for the

Greenway as trail work progresses.

The Community Day Charter School and Occupy Lowell for

volunteering to weed and mulch the downtown section of the

Greenway.

NKC Systems Inc. for computer networking assistance.

We’re positive we’ve forgotten someone, because so many

people go out of their way to support our work without our

even knowing! It all makes a difference and we can’t create

positive change on-the-ground without you. Thank you!

Last Friday in April

Plant a Tree!

Let us know of your Arbor Day event or tree planting in

Lowell and we’ll include it in our spring newsletter!

Animal tracks in the snow are a great way to learn about the winter

world around us! A few inches of snow fell in January, then during

a warm week in the 40s and 50s the upper layer of snow melted

away leaving these odd, curvy lines in the snow about one-and-a-

half inch wide. When the conditions are right, you can see these on

your lawn. What are they? Check out our Facebook page!

Harbor of Hope Christian Church volunteers enjoyed a fall clean-up day

at Jollene Dubner Park. Thank you and we look forward to your continued

stewardship of this park.

WINTER WORLD AROUND US

Congratulations to the City of Lowell for

being awarded a PARC Grant from the

MA Executive Office of Energy and

Environmental Affairs for continued

construction of the Concord River Greenway Park. This grant will

help pay for the next phase which will extend the Greenway north

from the end of the Lawrence Street section. LP&CT has multi-

lingual signage and public artwork ready to install, as well as an on-

line outdoor classroom curriculum ready for use!

RIVER MEADOW BROOK

DAR AWARD FOR SPALDING HOUSE

Last December,

LP&CT hosted an

exploration of River

Meadow Brook and

possible connections

between the Concord

River Greenway and the

Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.

Participants were joined

by UMass Lowell

professor Lori Weeden,

whose geochemistry class

is taking water samples along the corridor; Gray Fitzsimons, land

use history consultant to the project; Liz Newlands, an ecologist

with the Mass Audubon Ecological Extension Service, project

volunteers, and board members, as we walked beneath the Lowell

Connector. We have a great project team that will soon include

students in our after-school program.

The Lowell

Connector cuts across

River Meadow

Brook, but

underneath it is a

corridor used by local

people and wildlife,

as evidenced by

recent beaver activity.

Join us this spring for

further explorations

and clean-ups along

the River Meadow

Brook riparian

corridor.

Your support makes projects like this possible and

enables us to have regional impact. If you have an

environmental license plate, you are also helping support

the MA Environmental Trust, which has provided a two-year grant for

the program. Additional support has been provided EnTrust and the

Fieldstone Foundation.

chosen as the recipient of the

Daughters of the American

Revolution (DAR) Historic

Preservation Award by the National

Society of the DAR for our historic preservation of the 1760

Spalding House (383 Pawtucket St., Lowell). LP&CT will receive

the award during the February meeting of the Old Concord Chapter

of the DAR. The Molly Varnum Chapter of the DAR, which has

since disbanded, transferred ownership of the house to LP&CT in

1996. We are pleased and humbled to be awarded this national

recognition.

The DAR Historic Preservation Award is awarded for a

distinguished record in historic preservation, including outstanding

efforts in establishing a historic district or preserving a local landmark.

This has been a

wonderful surprise for us!

Look for updates after we

receive the award. In the

meantime, please explore the

Spalding House page on our

website for further information

about our historic preservation

work at the house, as well as

the house’s important history. The photo, at left from 1999, shows

the house when we removed the siding during the process of

restoration and the photo at right below shows the full exterior

restoration. The house’s interior has received significant

preservation work as well, including fuel efficiency upgrades,

enhanced security, full window restoration, paint analysis (200

paint chips analyzed), to name a few. This award is a nice way to

extend the celebration of the

house’s 250th birthday!
