I have spoken before about the dangers to our children and young people with the ever increasing sexualisaon of our society. As a father of two young daughters, I am so aware of this issue and how much influence media and society can have on the formaon of their identy. Melinda Tankard Reist has been an acvist in this area for many years. I have heard her speak on a number of occasions and her message is powerful and confronng. As a school community it is important for us to engage acvely in these issues and consequently we have decided to screen Melinda’s compelling DVD tled “Too Sexy Too Soon” on the night of the parent seminar – for parents/guardians only. The depues, counsellors and senior welfare staff will be present on the night as we discuss the impact of hyper sexualised messages on our younger generaon. Please mark this date in your diary and make it a priority to aend. As a Chrisan community it is important for us to take a stand of things that are not acceptable. Our children are so valuable and precious and we need to do all in our power to protect and honour them. There is a parent seminar coming up on Wednesday 18th February which I believe is addressing an extremely important issue in our society. I have spoken before about the dangers to our children and young people with the ever increasing sexualisation of our society. As a father of two young daughters, I am so aware of this issue and how much influence media and society can have on the formation of their identity.

Melinda Tankard Reist has been an activist in this area for many years. I have heard her speak on a number of occasions and her message is powerful and confronting. As a school community it is important for us to engage actively in these issues and consequently we have decided to screen Melinda’s compelling DVD titled “Too Sexy Too Soon” on the night of the parent seminar – for parents/guardians only.

High School Deputy PrincipalsAll high school years are now well and truly in full swing for 2015. It would appear the year has begun in a very settled manner with little to no unforeseen surprises or upsets - something for which we are all very grateful.

Part of the normal practice in assisting our students (and the families they represent) to cope with school life is to provide a number of parent meetings and information brochures at the beginning of each year. I would like to thank the parents who attended the recent Meet the Teacher nights, Year 10 Stepping into Senior School information session and the VET Information night where some very important information was exchanged. An-other important means of communication in the high school is through the assessment booklets that have now been issued to every student. Please check with your son or daughter if you are not familiar with this document. Electronic versions of these books can also be accessed by students through Edumate (Online Classroom/WCCS Assessment Books). These booklets give rules and guidelines pertaining to assessments as well as providing ad-vice on timings of tasks which is important for developing time management skills. The requirement for parents/carers to sign the student planner each week continues and is designed to facilitate two way communication be-tween school and home. Please take the time to read the information found in the front of this book as it gives a clear and succinct overview of many of the policies, procedures and practices in the school.

William Carey Christian School’s first Student Wellbeing Parent Seminar for 2015 will be held next week. Our school psychologists, counsellors and senior welfare team are hosting an information night titled “The effects of the adult world on a developing adolescent mind”. This seminar and discussion time will be held on Wednesday 18th February in R Block (7:00 pm – 8:15 pm). We invite you to join us for the viewing of Melinda Tankard Reist's DVD, 'Too Sexy Too Soon'. In this DVD, Melinda looks at how hyper-sexualised messages harm kids and what you can do about it. She takes us on a visual tour of popular culture and unpacks how the proliferation of sexual imagery and messages contribute to a distorted view of bodies, relationships and sexuality in girls and boys, and affects our ability to raise happy, healthy, resilient kids. The presentation is for parents and guardians only. Children are not invited and should not attend. Parents P – 12 are invited and encouraged to attend.The school’s High School camping program begins in the next two weeks with the Year 11 camp in Week 4 and

Year 7 Science camp in Week 5. Year 11 attend a three day study skills and leadership retreat at the Crusaders Union of Australia campsite at Crusader Road, Galston Gorge while Year 7 spend two days in Canberra where they visit such places as the Australian Institute of Sport, Earth Science Education Centre, the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Questacon and Canberra Space Dome Planetarium. The camping program is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and is simply seen as the school setting being transferred to a different location, enabling a variety of diverse learning activities to be explored and experienced.

Primary School Deputy PrincipalIt has been a great start to the school year. All of the procedural things associated with the start of the year have gone well and the children seem to be settling in nicely. They even coped with wet weather car and bus lines on their first day.

Thank you to the parents who were able to attend the Primary Information Evening last week. I trust it was a helpful evening, as we move into the new year. If you were unable to attend, you should have received a copy of the class note, via your child. Formal parent/teacher interviews will be held in Week 8 of this term.

As you have no doubt noticed, the car park has been fairly full as we start the year. That usually settles down, as more students start catching the bus home. Remember – we are happy to arrange a bus buddy to help your child, if required. Please ask at the Primary Office.

Parents are reminded that the Prep car park is only for the use of Prep parents, and only on the days those students attend Prep. As you can appreciate, it is a very small car park. OOSH parents also use this car park, but usually much earlier or later than the drop off/pick up rush.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is something we do at William Carey. However, this is managed on a class by class basis. If your child’s teacher wants children to bring in a device, a letter will go home outlining when it can come in and what it will be used for. Please note that no child will be disadvantaged by not having a device to bring to school.

On occasion, children bring in food in tins, such as tuna, fruit, etc. Unfortunately, these often open poorly, ending up with sharp edges. If you wish your child to eat something from a can, please transfer it to a plastic container to bring to school.

There are a few children still sorting out correct uniform. Some girls are wearing the Mary Jane style of shoe, which is not acceptable. There is also an interesting variety of hair adornments, many not in school colours. All aspects of school uniform are Board mandated and there is an expectation that uniform will be worn correctly. If in doubt about something, come and ask us, or visit the Uniform Shop. It would be good to get these things sorted, before we have to write reminder notes to families.

Welcome back to the start of another action packed year at William Carey.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new families and students joining us this year, it is won-derful and a real privilege to have you as a part of the William Carey community. In saying this, students have begun settling down into their new year as the third week of school is under way.

This year students will continue to familiarise to the new changes introduced in 2014, including wellbeing period, the new uniform and a slight difference in the bell times. A request was received last year by the SLC from girls in the high school for paper hand towels for G and E girls’ toilets. The SLC has liaised with the school administration to source these. They have just been installed and we are sure the girls will use them appropriately and respectfully.

Term 1 is bursting with exciting events including this week’s upcoming high school Swimming Carnival event where our students can demonstrate their talented ability and joy to swim. The novelty events, unlike pre-vious years, will be held out of the pool and feature fun-filled sporting events run by the year group’s SLC reps.

Another exciting event that has already commenced are the auditions for William Carey’s Seussical the Musical which will hit our stage in Term 3. Rehearsals are soon to be held and our production teachers are busy allocating roles, costumes, days for rehearsals and more!

Last week in our SLC meeting, Mr. White spoke on Philippians 2:3-4 and reminded us to consider our mo-tives in all that we do. Living in a world that pressures us to conform to our values and ourselves, God chal-lenges us to live life differently. As each day passes, we must continually learn the joy of giving and humbly serve one another, just as Jesus, being in very nature God made himself nothing so that we may have salvation. So we encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ to be godly role models, mirroring Christ’s love and to give rather than receive.

A few of our students also went on a CRU Recharge Day in the holidays where they spent the afternoon re-flecting on the question, ‘Where does God fit into my plans for this year?’ A key encouragement was exer-cising discipline and acknowledging the privilege of reading the Bible. To have a regular time set aside each day and have that one-on-one time with God, praying and reading his Word. Christians are challenged to do this, whether it be to just start or to juggle it between school work and other things. However, reading a short passage each day and having a notebook dedicated to these devotions is greatly beneficial, and by committing to Jesus He will give you what He knows is best and what only He can give.

News from the L ibrary The Premier’s Reading Challenge Congratulations to all students who completed the Challenge in 2014, especially Noah V, Jack M, Caitlin R and Lincoln Y who received the PRC Medallion for completing PRC for all nine years. books per child. High School students need to have their ID card with them in order to borrow.

Senior Study Centre: runs after school in the library Mon – Thurs 3:00 - 5:00 pm for

students in Years 10, 11 and 12. We have tutors, who excelled in the HSC, who can assist with assignments, essays and homework needs. See Mrs Smith for more details.

H.S. SPORT 2015

Welcome to another year of sport at WCCS! From students participating on a Tuesday afternoon to competing in National swimming, at WCCS we love to see students involved in sport at all levels. Below is an outline of the main tiers of sport and some important dates for your calendars.

1. School Based Sport This is run on Tuesday afternoons after lunch. Students can choose to trial for a MISA team, which is an interschool competition amongst local schools, or school sport activities which include a wide variety of sports e.g. aerobics, boxercise, fitness, cycling and physical theater as well as many others. 2. Southern Metropolitan Zone The pathway through to the major CSSA carnivals (swimming and athletics) and various gala days is through competition at a zone level. Students are selected for zone teams based on trials at school or performance at school carnivals. 3. CSSA Christian Schools Sports Association (CSSA) is a state wide Christian schools competition and the next level up from zone. Students are selected for competition at this level either as a school or zone based team. There are also opportunities throughout the year to trial for CSSA teams to represent CSSA at Combined Independent Schools Carnivals. 4. CIS Combined Independent Schools (CIS) is a highly competitive state wide competition for Independent schools. Some sports require students to be individually nominated to trial for CIS teams, whereas others require qualification through CSSA. Selection trials for CIS are only open to high level players.

CSSA and CIS Trials - Individual Nominations On the following page is a list of CIS and CSSA event dates and nomination and trial dates. If you are interested in being nominated to attend the trials for any of these sports please see Mrs James in J1 before the closing date. Please note that late entries will not be accepted. The cost of nomination for CIS trials is $21.60. NB: WCCS covers the cost of all school based and CSSA activities, but not CIS. If your son/daughter would like to trial for CIS the entrance fee needs to be paid to the Uniform Shop before their nomination will be submitted. William Carey Christian School Natural Photography Competition

Aiming to display parts of God’s creation using the gifts He has given us.

Open to students in Years 5 through to 12

Photos can be of animals (wild beasties right through to your favourite pet), amazing plants, breathtaking landscapes or more creative visions of nature.

Submit your photos taken during the last 12 months by Friday Week 4, Term 1, 2015.

Entry forms (with comp. details) can be picked up from the Primary and Secondary student offices or the Uniform Shop. Ensure you note the entry conditions on the back of the entry form. Entries to be submitted at the Science staffroom
