‘Footloose’

School Musical

Dear Parents and Members of our School Community

Welcome to week 10. Last week was another amazing week in

the year of Nyngan High School. Our school musical

“Footloose” was an outstanding success thanks to the help of so

many people in our school community. Our students were stars.

Each and every one of them who were part of what will be a

memorable production. From the set team to the backstage

crew, the sound and lighting team to the cast of the show and

everyone who assisted with tickets, food, ushering, donations,

photography and sponsorship. This was a community event and

the staff who made this happen should be very proud of what

we have been able to continue to achieve. I was so proud to be a

part of the audience and the community members I was able to

speak with were equally as proud of the achievements of all of

our students. May I thank each and every person who assisted

with Footloose and gave up so much of their own time to ensure

our students were able to achieve success. It certainly means a

lot to me and I know it means a lot to your children.

On Thursday we will be acknowledging the hard work of many

people who assisted with Footloose during our formal assembly.

If you are able to attend to show your appreciation and thanks I

am sure our staff, students and community members would be

grateful. The assembly will commence at 12.50pm.

Teachers Federation Stop Work Action

The NSW Teachers‟ Federation has organised industrial stop-

work action for 24 hours on Wednesday 27th June 2012.

While normal lessons will not be possible on this day there will

be minimal supervision available for any student who attends

school on the day.

Canteen facilities will be not be open to students on Wednesday.

Normal lessons will resume on Thursday 28th June 2012.

I apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause to our

parents.

Tongling Street Stall

I would like to thank the parents of our six Tongling students

for their hard work on Friday in running a street stall. There was

an enormous amount of cakes, slices and sweets for sale and

once again, our school community were inspirational in your

support both for making and donating cakes along with purchas-

ing cakes to support the fundraising efforts of our six girls.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support.

Selective School Enrolment 2013

Applications are invited from your students to seek placement

in xsel Western NSW‟s virtual Selective high school provision,

in Years 8, 9 and 10 for the 2013 academic year.

The procedures and forms to make application will be availa-

ble on the xsel school website from Tuesday June 26.

Applications must reach xsel by Tuesday July 31. Please

note that these are changed dates from those previously gazet-

ted, in line with changes from the Selective Schools Unit.

Prospective students and their families will seek your help to

forward principal‟s recommendations and teacher reports as

part of the application process. The procedures are explained

in the documents posted online. Please feel free to contact me

RoadWhyz

Today all students in Years 10,11, and 12 took part in a pro-

gram called RoadWhyz. This community driven project was

initiated in 2007 in the Hunter Valley by Sergeant Dave Col-

lis of the NSW Highway Patrol, Paul Alexander a Paramedic

from the NSW Ambulance service, Simon Thomas of the

NSW Police Force and Michelle Davis an advocate for road

safety. Together this team of volunteers saw an issue in the

community that needed to be addressed- the ever increasing

rate of young driver fatalities and injuries occurring while

traveling in a motor vehicle. It was decided that an education-

al program had to be developed so that through clear, concise,

factual and real information the message of 'choice and conse-

quence' could be delivered. This was a thought provoking and

inspiration program and my sincere thanks goes to Demi Jef-

frey for her hard work in bringing this program to our school

and to Miss Dunk for the organisation to make this happen. I

hope that our senior students were shocked into some of the

tragic consequences that can occur if the wrong choices are

made behind the wheel of a vehicle.

Formal School Assembly

This Thursday, our school will hold our term 2 Formal assem-

bly recognising student achievement. All parents of award

recipients will have been sent a letter inviting them to the

assembly. We will also be recognising the achievements of

the many people who assisted with Footloose last week. If

you would like to come and show your support please feel

free to do so. The assembly will commence at 12.50pm

Athletics Carnival

On Tuesday this week, we will be holding our annual athlet-

ics carnival at Number 1 Oval. All students have been sent an

information note regarding the requirements of the day. This

is a compulsory school day and as such, it is a requirement

that all students attend. The carnival will commence at

8.40am and students should make their own way to the oval.

Students will be dismissed from the oval at the conclusion of

the carnival which is expected to be approximately 2.00pm.

Those students who need to catch buses will return to school

and wait for their buses. It would be great if you could come

along and support your child at some stage throughout the day.

We have had another fantastic term at Nyngan High School

and I am so proud to be a part of what is, such a wonderful

community.

It has been a difficult term for many reasons, but as a school

and a community we continue to work together to ensure that

our children have access to the very best programs and teach-

ers in the region.

I hope you have a fantastic holiday and have a chance to

spend some time with your family.

Students return to school on Tuesday 17th July and staff will

return on Monday 16th July 2012.

Deputy Principal’s Report

Footloose

Congratulations to the students and staff involved in Foot-

loose. The performances, which were thoroughly enjoyed by

substantial audiences, were the culmination of 6 months of

rehearsals and planning.

Such a large scale production would not be possible without

widespread assistance and support from students, teachers,

parents and community. A sincere thank you to everyone in-

volved.

Our whole school community is so proud of the confident per-

formances from all of the students, including the lead charac-

ters Chloe Dunn, Nelson Salter, Joel Cole, Tayla Martin, Mal-

achi Dutschke and Caitlin Wilcockson. Strong, consistently

excellent performances by Malachi Dutschke, Tayla Martin

and Sophie White remain appreciated, while extra attention

has been given to those who have surprised people with more

talent than expected – Chloe Dunn, Joel Coyle, Caitlin Wil-

cockson, Caleb Dutschke, Nelson Salter, Bethany Young and

Kiarna Stephens. It‟s wonderful to watch the development of

skill in the students on the stage.

The Nyngan High School chorus learnt their dances well and

performed very well. The inclusion of students from Nyngan

Public School, St Josephs Primary School and the singers from

Sing Australia Nyngan added body and depth to the perfor-

mance. The camaraderie developing between students of the

schools is increasing the already strong links between our part-

ner schools.

Audiences loved the addition of our local heroes in “I‟m Hold-

ing Out For A Hero” sung by Chloe Dunn. Tim Waite who

also played the Bomont Cop led the team of ambos, police,

teachers and commandos. The involvement of these people is

an indication of support they provide to our school and com-

munity, and is greatly appreciated.

The staff of Nyngan High School demonstrate their support for

the skills and teamwork that our students are developing

through the musical through their direct or indirect involve-

ment. Teachers directly involved took on roles from directing,

musical directing, choreography, set design, set construction,

hair, makeup, canteen, supper, cast supervision, sponsorship,

advertising, cleaning, organising, printing…and the list goes

on. What should not go unnoticed is the support offered by

teachers indirectly involved who remain at school teaching the

classes of teachers directly involved.

Parental support of Nyngan High School, and the musical is

second to none. Parents supported our students by sewing cos-

tumes, organising costumes, purchasing costumes from Vin-

nies, selling raffle tickets and organising the raffle, setting up

dressing rooms for the actors, cleaning the Palais, cooking for

a crowd, transporting equipment to and from the Palais, vide-

oing, helping to find props…and the list goes on. Several peo-

ple help out with things without any knowledge from organis-

ers which is truly amazing….suddenly we just notice that jobs

have been done.

The support of Angie White and the Bogan Shire Council who

allow us to use the Palais Theatre and loan equipment for us to

use is also greatly appreciated.

I encourage everyone to provide us with feedback regarding

the musical. It is always useful to know what people are think-

ing when working on such large projects as this.

We would like to recognise the contributions made by our par-

ents, community and staff during our assembly on Thursday at

12:50pm. All of the people who helped out in any way are

encouraged to attend.

Be Fire Safe This Winter

Winter‟s chill has arrived and with it our scramble for heaters,

electric blankets and open fires. Entertaining is now year

round thanks to portable outdoor gas heaters. But with all these

conveniences come fire dangers. Statistics reveal that almost

half of all home fires are started in the kitchen and 43 per cent

of all fire fatalities occur in winter. NSW Fire and Rescue re-

minds us to do a fire safety audit of our homes this winter,

check smoke detectors are working and ensure appliances such

as clothes dryers and dishwashers are running efficiently and

Pre Athletics Carnival Events

Today we started our pre carnival events. It was great to see so many children participating and we look forward to seeing every-

one at No.1 oval at 8:40am tomorrow.

CHS Open Boys Soccer

What a courageous and determined performance by the team. We were up against a Dubbo side chosen from 3 different High

Schools which meant that they were able to choose a quality team consisting of up to 9 representative players. At the beginning

of the game, I asked our team to work together and show a positive, competitive spirit on the field. They didn‟t disappoint. The

first half was played at a cracking pace and we were unlucky to have a scrappy goal scored against us. I watched as our players

took it on the chin and continued to work hard, winning possession and applying some pressure. I asked our guys to pepper the

Dubbo goals and Jayden Bonello came so close on a number of occasions. His long-range shots looked set for glory but would

just scrape over the bars each time, much to the relief of the Dubbo players.

The second half was much tougher as the Dubbo players found their rhythm and had us cramped in our own half for the majority

of the half. Any other team would have folded quickly under such pressure but time and again Oliver Hoare, Jackson Williams

Hedges, Joel Coyle, Marc Jenner and super goalie Jack Lupton repelled their attacks. Ryan Beetson, Cooper Barrow, Jarrod

Blake and Pat Walsh tried in vain to hold the midfield and were superb. Finally, Dubbo scored the winning breakthrough goal to

stretch the lead to 2-0 and run out worthy winners on the day.

I‟d like to congratulate the most successful Nyngan High School soccer team for making it to the semi-finals and representing

the town in such a positive way throughout the knockout comp. The many spectators commented on our fighting spirit and were

highly impressed. A special mention and thanks to Annie and Mark Wherritt for bringing free water bottles on our game days.

Boys AFL Report

On Wednesday 13th June a group of 22 young and eager Nyngan High School boys

travelled to Parkes to compete in a Round Robin format AFL Giants Cup competition.

The competition was established to promote AFL in the Western Region as part of the

Greater Western Sydney Giants campaign. The boys were to compete in four 15 mi-

nute games rather than the usual quarters set up.

After warming up and getting their positions the boys were keen to get onto the field. We

were set to go head to head against four schools that already have local AFL competi-

tions established in their home towns. The other schools consisted of James Sheahan

from Orange, Parkes, Dubbo and Forbes.

The boys first came up against James Sheahan who ended up taking out the competition

for the day. Unfortunately our kicking game wasn‟t quite on the mark yet and we went

down fighting 0.3 (3) to 3.0. (18). Ruckman Marc Jenner ensured that spoils in the mid-

dle were a 50/50 contest and Mitchell Williams-Hedges and Dwayne Anderson cleared

the ball out of the centre with precision kicking. The second game was against Dubbo and again, our kicking let us down to go

1.2 (8) to 0.4 (4). After some much needed reshuffling in the forward line, the boys were confident of a win in the third game.

They came out firing with Malachi Dutschke and Jackson Williams-Hedges working brilliantly together to set up some fantastic

goals. Brett Howard was also brilliant in the forward pocket keeping the oppositional defence of Parkes on the back foot for the

entire game. Ryan Beetson, Dylan Dutschke and Mitchell Casey were also a stand out ensuring that the Parkes forwards had no

chance of scoring. The final score for the third game was Nyngan 5.1. (31) to Parkes 0.0. (0). The boys were now enjoying the

game more and it was great to see the team work and dedication of all those involved reflected on the field. We came up against

Forbes in the last game which proved to be the most even match of the day. It came down to Malachi after the siren to kick the

winning score as it was all tied up at 13 all. He managed to kick a behind and win it for Nyngan 2.2 (14) 2.1. (13).

It was a memorable day that I hope the boys will never forget and it was great to see them take another sport on board with en-

thusiasm and maturity. A big thanks to Mr Walmsley for his coaching efforts, Miss Dunk for her organisation and bus driving

skills and to Tom Waterhouse for keeping the boys hydrated.

P&C News

Hi Everyone

The P&C meeting was held on Monday 18th June at 5.45pm with another great roll up for the meeting. Thanks to those who at-

tended.

We had a special guest being Ros Darcy from Tritton Mine who donated $5000 to the P&C to go towards our musical produc-

tions as the school. This has already been passed on to the school to pay for equipment purchased for Footloose. So a huge thank

you to Tritton mine for this contribution. As anyone who has tried to raise funds knows it takes a lot to try to raise this sort of

money so it is very much appreciated.

Congratulations to all involved in the musical “Footloose” on the weekend. It was fantastic. Everyone involved is to be congratu-

lated for another fantastic effort in putting on a very professional production that will be talked about for months to come.

We are still looking for a few volunteers for the Rugby League Gate I have enclosed dates and times again for those wishing to

help out. We get $200 per game for doing the gate so this is a great way to fundraise without putting our hands in our pockets.

We just need a little of your time. Now that the musical is over people might feel that they can donate a couple of hours on a

Sunday. Thanks to Di Dunn, Steve Salter, Jodi Douglas, Jackie Carthew, Leonie & Mitchell Smith, Nikki Russell & Nicole Al-

derson who tended the gate over the last two weeks your assistance is appreciated.

Congratulations Josh!

Congratulations to Josh Sibbald of Year 12 for making it through to final for

the Western Region School Based Apprentice of the Year. Josh and his family

will attend the awards night in Orange on Friday night 29th June.

On behalf of Nyngan High School Staff and Students we wish Josh all the

best for Friday night. This is a prestigious award and just getting to the final is

an achievement in itself.
