No, not tax time, and certainly not the Holidays. It’s time for the Associate Opinion Survey, or AOS for short. In the past, you may remember it as the “Grass Roots Survey”. Whatever you want to call it- please take a few minutes and give us your opinions on our store and our company. Walmart would not be Walmart if we did not have the wonderful and dedicated associates that we have. Many of the ideas that made Walmart such a great company came from associates like you. The survey is taken online in the Personnel Office and is completely confidential . All we ask is that you highlight your name so we know how many associates have taken the survey. This survey is not part of your break or lunch hour- it is to be done while on the clock. Our goal is to hear the opinions of 100% of our associates because every opinion counts. Then & NowThen & NowThen & NowThen & Now The Remodel - One Year Later

One year ago this week our store remodel began. We dug deep into our store’s photo archives to find some pictures of the store before all the remodeling began. In the next few issues we will put a few “before and after” photos from different areas around the store.

Then: Sporting Goods (July 2007)

Now: What use to be Sporting Goods is now part of Stationary and Furniture.

Photos by Marilyn H. and Gabor S.

If you have any older photos of our store that you would like to share, please let us know.

Barbarann has quite a history with Walmart. She began her career in the Claims Department at Store #1349 in Sunrise. She’s worked in six different stores before coming to our store. She was an Assistant Manager for a time, a Support Manager, and has managed almost all the departments on the GM side over the years- currently Stationary.

Barbarann remembers “old school” Walmart before we had Telxons and computers when everything was done on paper- like price changes and orders.

In her spare time, Barbarann likes to sing karaoke, cook, and travel. She is widowed, with two sons, and two grandchildren.

Heidi with Liberia’s Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai

The country of Liberia (Liberty) was founded in 1822 by freed African-America slaves on the West coast of Africa. Liberia’s government was modeled after that of the United States, but ethnic tensions with Liberia’s neighbors soon lead to many disputes. Since 1989, Liberia has been in a state of flux witnessing two civil wars, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and devastating the country's economy.

Heidi recently traveled to Liberia with her church to visit the Children of Hope, an orphanage that her church sponsors. The trip really made Heidi think about how much we Americans take for granted. The country of Liberia is trying to rebuild after many years of war, but it will be a slow process. When Heidi talked with the Vice President- he urged her that his country doesn’t need financial help- they are trying to rebuild their democratic government from the ground up. They need help with the basic things like teaching his people how to build houses, how to govern, how to rebuild their economy.

Goodbye and good luck ‘Mr. Incredible’!

Le’Va can’t figure out what to buy his sister for her birthday.

Ginger suggests that he buy her something really expensive.

The next day Le’Va shows Ginger the really expensive present he bought for his sister…. fifteen gallons of gas.

FUN FACT: Sam Walton use to work at JC Penny’s in the late 1940’s. His manager was not pleased with him and told him he would never be successful in retail. By the 1980’s, Sam Walton was the richest man in the world- still working in retail……………..

New Walmart Logo!New Walmart Logo!New Walmart Logo!New Walmart Logo! Our company’s logo is changing! Over the next couple of months you will notice the old Wal*Mart logo slowly being fazed out- the biggest change will be the new sign on the front of our store which we will probably get later this Fall.

Walmart is making the transition in a highly cost effective way. We are going to change the logo on items only when it needs to be replaced. We aren’t going to do it all at once- but slowly over time. For example- all of our grocery bags have the old logo- but as we run out of bags, we need to order more. They will send us the ones with the new logo. Slowly over time we will also get new name badges with the new logo. That’s just some examples. The new logo has already been implemented on some items in our store- we’ve been getting a few cases of the new grocery bags- plus some of the printed material has the new logo as well.

The change was made to show that our company is moving in a new bright, eco-friendly direction- hence the “sunburst” in the logo. The Walton family did approve of this change. Our company’s name is now going back to just Walmart- all one word. We no longer need to separate “Wal” and “Mart” with a hyphen, squiggly, or a star (Wal-Mart, Wal~Mart, Wal*Mart). Sam Walton always called his store “Walmart“- and it only became “Wal~Mart” when the first logo was introduced in 1964. The Walmart Cheer and the name of this newsletter will remain the same, even though we don’t have “The Squiggly” in our logo anymore.

1962 - 1964 Sam Walton named his new store WALMART. The Walmart name was presented in just about any font/style available to the printer.

1964 - 1981

Also known as the “Frontier Font Logo”, this was the first official and consistently used logo. It also introduced the “squiggly”.

1981 -1992

The logo was updated in 1981.

1992 - 2008

The star was adopted as an update to the existing logo in early 1992.

2008

This is the new Walmart logo. The text is light blue, the sunburst is orange.

FUN FACT: We actually had a State called Franklin! In 1784 North Carolina ceded five counties to the US government. These five counties became a new colony- set up a new government, and established statehood in 1787. The State of Franklin’s government never took hold and ended up collapsing. Franklin State became part of Tennessee in 1790. Things they don’t teach you in school.
