“His fl ashing eyes, roaring voice, and threatening
gestures did nothing to impress Alestria, who
had decapitated the most brutal warriors in her
time.”
— Just another day in the life of the tempestuous couple
Written with the unironic
portentousness of an ancient
myth, the novel nonethe-
less has modern and moving
insights into such hot-button
topics as violence and gender.

“It was becoming diffi cult to overlook my
advancing age, thirty-one, and soon, thirty-two
— an age for an unmarried woman that makes
Indian aunties shudder in horror.”
— The situation begins to feel dire before the author’s journey
Anyone interested in a lively,
irreverent look at the changing
societal and sexual mores of
newly globalized Indian cities will appreciate
Jain’s richly detailed account.
A 30-something Indian
American journalist decides
to tackle her singledom and
appease her increasingly
desperate parents by
traveling to India with the
goal of landing a husband.

The author’s self-proclaimed “insouciant”
wit starts to grate about halfway through.
It would be easier to root for her romantic
success if she didn’t constantly act out on
dates in ways that seem (sometimes) rude and
(more often) mildly deranged.
— Sara Cardace
“Well, I don’t need no doctor /
To tear me all apart / I just
needed you / To mend my heart”
— “Hang On”
Encompassing sounds from folk
to soul to blues to ’60s rock,
it’s an idiosyncratic carnival
of an album, with hand claps,
harmonies, biblical allegories
and hooks aplenty.

Other than that it’s a concept album (about the
vagaries of fate) and that the band contains no
actual dogs, there’s little not to love.

“Start it up again like it matters anymore /
I don’t know if it does / Is this really all /
That there ever was?”
— “1,000,000”
Its “In Rainbows”-like delivery method has made
Trent Reznor newly relevant, yet “The Slip” bears
all the sonic hallmarks of NIN’s classic discs. It’s
the most familiar and unquestionably the best
work he has done in a decade.
Available for months as a free

a physical version of NIN’s
second offering of the year is
fi nally being released.

The three-disc set is so overstuffed with Reznor’s
usual airless misery, it should come with a
Prozac prescription.

“Jackson is a eunuch. He was
symbolically castrated by his fame
at a very young age.”
— Knight realizes why his stint as a Michael Jackson impersonator
didn’t get him more play with the ladies
Not only do you get Knight’s
hilariously funky take on human
idiosyncrasies, you also get a
uniquely observed almanac of
societal and pop culture trends of
the past 15 years.
The acclaimed cartoonist’s long-
running strip is collected in a massive
tome, complete with Knight’s commentary
on the political and personal origins of
select entries.

money you make!”

Ben (Jim Sturgess, right), an MIT

vard Medical School, is lured
by a shady professor (Kevin
Spacey) into a blackjack
card-counting ring. Moral
conundrums ensue.

$28.96
Spacey seems to have cashed out
whatever charm he used to have, and
regardless of the innumerable slo-mo shots of
cards being fl ipped over, there’s really no way to
make blackjack visually interesting.
— Greg Zinman
“It’s boil-in-the-bag perversion for sexually
repressed accountants and fi rst-year drama
students with too many posters of ‘Betty Blue,’
‘The Blues Brothers,’ ‘Big Blue’ and ‘Blue Velvet’
on their blue bloody walls!”
— Tim (Pegg) explains why he doesn’t want to go back to a party
This British series features the original pairing of
Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, the team behind
“Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz.” It follows
two friends (Pegg and Jessica Stevenson)
pretending to be a couple to rent a fl at.

Some of the ’90s pop culture references
are out of date, unless you’re clamoring
for “Mission: Impossible II” gags.
— G.Z.
Some of Aerosmith’s tunes, “Dream

among the most fun to play in the entire Guitar
Hero series.
Take on the role of guitar
superstar Joe Perry as you
follow Aerosmith’s career from
the band’s fi rst gig at a high

It’s an awful lot of one band, including
video interviews with the real musicians

to set in quickly.

RoadTrip Plein Air Painting in Easton
WHERE: Easton, Md.
WHY: Modern Monets, DIY pottery and what’s on tap?
HOW FAR: About one mile from start to finish, and about 70 miles from Washington.
For those planning to visit Easton next week, beware of wet paint. Starting Mon-day, the Eastern Shore town will be dripping in oils, acrylics and watercolorsfor the fourth annual Plein Air Competition and Arts Festival.
The French phrase “plein air” refers to the painterly technique in which art-ists use the outdoors as their studio, dragging easels and paints outside to create mas-terpieces on the spot. The tradition was popularized in the mid-1800s by the BarbizonSchool and the light-fixated impressionists (e.g., Monet and his amis) and continuestoday amid such frame-worthy landscapes as the Chesapeake Bay.
During the seven-day festival, accomplished artists from across the country willplant their paint sets on the genteel streets, grassy fields and shorelines of TalbotCounty. Their ultimate goal is to walk away with the best-painting prize. One of themore exhilarating events is Saturday’s Quick Draw, a mad race to produce a work of artin two hours. (All are invited to compete, even those who never advanced beyond fin-ger painting.) The best creations win awards or, even better, find buyers.
The same day, the Maryland Shakespeare Festival will perform for free “The MerryWives of Windsor,” yes, en plein air (specifically, in the town parking lot). The matri-monial comedy is just one of many special performances, lectures and workshops in-tended to inspire attendees to go outside and be creative.
