PTO President’s Letter As I wrap up my term as president of the PTO, I would like to thank all of you who made these past two years such a success. Without your ideas, sup- port, time, energy, and financial contributions we would have been unable to move our organization for- ward with ideas such as the Golden Apple Grants, Outdoor Classroom, Fun Run, Eagle Exchange, Pay to Play fundraiser, Friends of the PTO campaign, New Eagle PTO website, School Mural, PTO Blast, School Mascot “Swoop,” New Eagle Day of Giving and more. You made this all possible! I also thank the teachers and staff who come to work each day and teach, guide, encourage, help, sup- port, and love our children. Their contributions to New Eagle don’t end with the school day, however. Teachers also run our after and before school clubs, help with the Fun Run and Pizza Bingo, donate time and money to our Pay to Play and Spring Fling fundraisers, and participate in our committees and programs such as Character Building and the PTO board. Teachers come to the Ice Cream Social, Parent Social, Pizza Bingo, Spring Fling, and the Fun Run just to be part of our school community – and how glad we are to see you there! Jen Doyle and our office staff are always busy helping us with flyers, district paperwork, logistics, and details, details, details! Our custodians support us every step of the way as we prepare, set up, take down, and clean up our events and fundraisers. No one knows our school and students the way you do. We are so thankful to have you as part of the New Eagle community. A final thank you goes to Ms. Whyte as our fearless leader… (whom I did manage to rattle on oc- casion with some of our “outside the box” ideas!) Thank you, Ms. Whyte, for trusting in us and in our ideas for the benefit of our school community. We couldn’t do what we do with out your support and blessing -- and we thank you for both. So that’s a wrap. I have truly enjoyed serving as President of our PTO and I couldn’t feel better about leaving us in the capable and very enthusiastic hands of Stephanie Smith. We are all very lucky to have Stephanie stepping into this role next year! For now, enjoy the rest of the school year and have a wonderful summer! If you did and have not returned the bottom portion of the letter, please do so as soon as possible. The nurse needs to update your child’s school health record. Room 116rsquos Big Give

As part of our Golden Apple Grant program the PTO board approved a request from Mrs Adams to donate $200 to

her first grade class so the students could participate in a ldquoBig Giverdquo project

Each child was given $10 There was only one rule ndash the money could not be used in any way that the child would

directly benefit from it The students were encouraged to think of ways that they could use the money to help

others The idea could be as simple as giving money to someone in need but the children were encouraged to be

creative

Herersquos what they accomplished

Five children turned their $10 into a total of $35457 which was donated to JapanhellipThese children sold

homemade cards had a lemonade stand sold cookies and asked for family donations

Six children turned their $10 into $23375 which was donated to CHOPhellipThese children sold tickets to a

movie party at their house baked and sold cupcakes made and sold bracelets made and sold luggage tags

Some of the money was donated and some of the money was used to buy toys and DVDs for the children at

CHOP

Three children turned their $10 into $48575 that was donated to the SPCAhellipThese children had a yard

sale and spent some time at Braxtonrsquos asking for donations

One child turned her $10 into $200 to donate to Operation Gratitude by selling hamentaschen

One child turned his $10 into $66 that was used to buy sporting equipment and school supplies for Kids

First Now at the Carr SchoolhellipHe made and sold origami and sold some of his old clothing

Two children turned their $10 into $60 that was donated to The Best Nest along with 50 books they col-

lectedhellip These children made and sold original books

One child turned her

$10 into $48 that was

donated to Spay and

SavehellipShe baked

brownies and sold them

at Petco

One child turned his

$10 into $20 and do-

nated it to the Cape

May ZoohellipHe asked for

family donations

In the end Room 116 turned

$200 into $146807 How

inspiring to see the differ-

ence one child can make

Congratulations to Mrs

Adams and Room 116

Thanks for making the

world a better place

Diversity Committee Meeting Notes Wednesday May 4 2011

Topic Student Performance and Academic Demographic Data

Gender and ethnicity data were given for instructional placement and course taking behavior for all schools in TE

Population Demographics

bull Increase of 400 students in last 5 years

bull Asian (self-identified) students increased from 10

to 13

bull Black (self-identified) students decreased and

hovers around 4

bull Hispanic (self-identified) students increased

by 12

bull White (self-identified) students decreased from

85 to 80

The ethnic categories mirrored the 2010 census There

was some concern that these categories were insuffi-

cient to describe all individuals though it was noted

that there are more ethnicity options in the 2010 cen-

sus than in the previous census

bull Population of male and female students is balanced

in all schools in TE

Course Taking Behavior

bull Increase in number of AP courses offered and an

increase in students of all ethnicities taking Honors

and APHonors courses ndash this reflects a national

trend

bull Increase in girls taking AP courses - particularly in

Math and Science More girls than boys are taking

these courses ndash also a national trend

bull Conestoga Students are consistently getting pass-

ing grades in the AP exams (mostly 4rsquos and 5rsquos)

These high scores validate TErsquos approach to AP en-

rollment ndash any student may take an AP class

bull Middle Schools Most 5th 6th and 7th grade stu-

dents receive above grade level instruction in Math

and by 8th grade are doing high school level Math

bull Elementary Schools Most students receive on

grade level reading instruction and by 4th grade

are reading above grade level In Mathematics

most students are receiving above grade level in-

struction in 3rd and 4th grade

Conestoga ldquoNavigaterdquo program

This is a mentoring program designed to give all stu-

dents access to the resources necessary for a success-

ful transition from High School - college prep inter-

viewing techniques resume writing etc It was deter-

mined that while all these resources exist at

Conestoga many students (particularly from economi-

cally disadvantaged homes) had trouble finding and ac-

cessing them

Diversity Committee proposed topics

for 2011-2012 year

bull Hiring and recruitment Report

bull Annual look at demographic data

bull Gender issues ndash occupational biases worldwide

bull Why are significantly fewer boys than girls taking

AP classes Video games

bull Ongoing look at mentorship programs throughout all

schools

Suggestions for other topics for the committee to con-

sider are encouraged

Diversity Committee Meeting Notes Wednesday May 4 2011

Topic Student Performance and Academic Demographic Data

Gender and ethnicity data were given for instructional placement and course taking behavior for all schools in TE

Population Demographics

bull Increase of 400 students in last 5 years

bull Asian (self-identified) students increased from 10

to 13

bull Black (self-identified) students decreased and

hovers around 4

bull Hispanic (self-identified) students increased

by 12

bull White (self-identified) students decreased from

85 to 80

The ethnic categories mirrored the 2010 census There

was some concern that these categories were insuffi-

cient to describe all individuals though it was noted

that there are more ethnicity options in the 2010 cen-

sus than in the previous census

bull Population of male and female students is balanced

in all schools in TE

Course Taking Behavior

bull Increase in number of AP courses offered and an

increase in students of all ethnicities taking Honors

and APHonors courses ndash this reflects a national

trend

bull Increase in girls taking AP courses - particularly in

Math and Science More girls than boys are taking

these courses ndash also a national trend

bull Conestoga Students are consistently getting pass-

ing grades in the AP exams (mostly 4rsquos and 5rsquos)

These high scores validate TErsquos approach to AP en-

rollment ndash any student may take an AP class

bull Middle Schools Most 5th 6th and 7th grade stu-

dents receive above grade level instruction in Math

and by 8th grade are doing high school level Math

bull Elementary Schools Most students receive on

grade level reading instruction and by 4th grade

are reading above grade level In Mathematics

most students are receiving above grade level in-

struction in 3rd and 4th grade

Conestoga ldquoNavigaterdquo program

This is a mentoring program designed to give all stu-

dents access to the resources necessary for a success-

ful transition from High School - college prep inter-

viewing techniques resume writing etc It was deter-

mined that while all these resources exist at

Conestoga many students (particularly from economi-

cally disadvantaged homes) had trouble finding and ac-

cessing them

Diversity Committee proposed topics

for 2011-2012 year

bull Hiring and recruitment Report

bull Annual look at demographic data

bull Gender issues ndash occupational biases worldwide

bull Why are significantly fewer boys than girls taking

AP classes Video games

bull Ongoing look at mentorship programs throughout all

schools

Suggestions for other topics for the committee to con-

sider are encouraged

Diversity Committee Meeting Notes Wednesday May 4 2011

Topic Student Performance and Academic Demographic Data

Gender and ethnicity data were given for instructional placement and course taking behavior for all schools in TE

Population Demographics

bull Increase of 400 students in last 5 years

bull Asian (self-identified) students increased from 10

to 13

bull Black (self-identified) students decreased and

hovers around 4

bull Hispanic (self-identified) students increased

by 12

bull White (self-identified) students decreased from

85 to 80

The ethnic categories mirrored the 2010 census There

was some concern that these categories were insuffi-

cient to describe all individuals though it was noted

that there are more ethnicity options in the 2010 cen-

sus than in the previous census

bull Population of male and female students is balanced

in all schools in TE

Course Taking Behavior

bull Increase in number of AP courses offered and an

increase in students of all ethnicities taking Honors

and APHonors courses ndash this reflects a national

trend

bull Increase in girls taking AP courses - particularly in

Math and Science More girls than boys are taking

these courses ndash also a national trend

bull Conestoga Students are consistently getting pass-

ing grades in the AP exams (mostly 4rsquos and 5rsquos)

These high scores validate TErsquos approach to AP en-

rollment ndash any student may take an AP class

bull Middle Schools Most 5th 6th and 7th grade stu-

dents receive above grade level instruction in Math

and by 8th grade are doing high school level Math

bull Elementary Schools Most students receive on

grade level reading instruction and by 4th grade

are reading above grade level In Mathematics

most students are receiving above grade level in-

struction in 3rd and 4th grade

Conestoga ldquoNavigaterdquo program

This is a mentoring program designed to give all stu-

dents access to the resources necessary for a success-

ful transition from High School - college prep inter-

viewing techniques resume writing etc It was deter-

mined that while all these resources exist at

Conestoga many students (particularly from economi-

cally disadvantaged homes) had trouble finding and ac-

cessing them

Diversity Committee proposed topics

for 2011-2012 year

bull Hiring and recruitment Report

bull Annual look at demographic data

bull Gender issues ndash occupational biases worldwide

bull Why are significantly fewer boys than girls taking

AP classes Video games

bull Ongoing look at mentorship programs throughout all

schools

Suggestions for other topics for the committee to con-

sider are encouraged

Diversity Committee Meeting Notes Wednesday May 4 2011

Topic Student Performance and Academic Demographic Data

Gender and ethnicity data were given for instructional placement and course taking behavior for all schools in TE

Population Demographics

bull Increase of 400 students in last 5 years

bull Asian (self-identified) students increased from 10

to 13

bull Black (self-identified) students decreased and

hovers around 4

bull Hispanic (self-identified) students increased

by 12

bull White (self-identified) students decreased from

85 to 80

The ethnic categories mirrored the 2010 census There

was some concern that these categories were insuffi-

cient to describe all individuals though it was noted

that there are more ethnicity options in the 2010 cen-

sus than in the previous census

bull Population of male and female students is balanced

in all schools in TE

Course Taking Behavior

bull Increase in number of AP courses offered and an

increase in students of all ethnicities taking Honors

and APHonors courses ndash this reflects a national

trend

bull Increase in girls taking AP courses - particularly in

Math and Science More girls than boys are taking

these courses ndash also a national trend

bull Conestoga Students are consistently getting pass-

ing grades in the AP exams (mostly 4rsquos and 5rsquos)

These high scores validate TErsquos approach to AP en-

rollment ndash any student may take an AP class

bull Middle Schools Most 5th 6th and 7th grade stu-

dents receive above grade level instruction in Math

and by 8th grade are doing high school level Math

bull Elementary Schools Most students receive on

grade level reading instruction and by 4th grade

are reading above grade level In Mathematics

most students are receiving above grade level in-

struction in 3rd and 4th grade

Conestoga ldquoNavigaterdquo program

This is a mentoring program designed to give all stu-

dents access to the resources necessary for a success-

ful transition from High School - college prep inter-

viewing techniques resume writing etc It was deter-

mined that while all these resources exist at

Conestoga many students (particularly from economi-

cally disadvantaged homes) had trouble finding and ac-

cessing them

Diversity Committee proposed topics

for 2011-2012 year

bull Hiring and recruitment Report

bull Annual look at demographic data

bull Gender issues ndash occupational biases worldwide

bull Why are significantly fewer boys than girls taking

AP classes Video games

bull Ongoing look at mentorship programs throughout all

schools

Suggestions for other topics for the committee to con-

sider are encouraged
