INTRODUCTION The Tasmanian Deacon’s Organising Committee on behalf of the National Association of Deacons (NAD) is hosting the biennial national Deacons conference in March 2017. We extend an invitation all deacons, candidates, aspirants, formators and interested clergy from dioceses from Australia and New Zealand, and their wives to attend.
The 2017 national conference is to be held in Hobart, Tasmania from 23-26 March 2017 at the Best Western Hotel and St Mary’s Cathedral. The Best Western Hotel offers excellent facilities and is in close proximity to our other venue St Mary’s Cathedral. The Hotel and St Mary’s are within close walking distance to the centre of Hobart.
This conference is offered to assist with the ongoing formation of deacons, aspirants, candidates, formators and clergy with a number of addresses focusing on evangelisation. This year’s theme has been chosen from St Matthew Chapter 28, verse 19 “Go therefore and make disciples”, and as a part of our ministry have been chosen to be at the forefront of the new evangelisation. We hope that all who attend will be enriched and be empowered to be “Deacons as ministers of the new evangelisation.”

SPEAKERS Archbishop Julian Porteous
Archbishop of Hobart
Archbishop Porteous was installed as the 11th Archbishop of Hobart on 11th September 2013. In July 2003, Pope John Paul II named Archbishop Porteous as Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney and he was ordained by Cardinal George Pell at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney on September 3, 2003. He has been assigned the Titular See of Urusi, which is in modern-day Tunisia. Archbishop Porteous chose as his motto, “Gratia et Veritas” – “Grace and Truth”. St John describes the Lord as bringing “grace and truth” (John 1:17). Grace is the work of the Holy Spirit bringing about conversion and the nurturing of faith. Truth is also the gift of the “Spirit of Truth” (John 14:17) who enlightens the mind. The Holy Spirit is the agent of the work of God in us – bringing us to faith and then transforming our minds and leading us “into all truth” (John 16:13).
Mrs Clara Geoghegan
Catherine of Siena Institute
Clara Geoghegan is the co-director of the Catherine of Siena Institute Australia. Clara had presented Called and Gifted Workshops and other programs around spiritual gift discernment and Forming Intentional Disciples around Australia, working with parishes, schools and dioceses. Clara also teaches Church History and Spirituality at Catholic Theological College Melbourne

Mrs Lorraine McCarthy
Alpha Australia
Lorraine McCarthy is the Alpha in a Catholic Context Coordinator in Australia. She is a Pastoral Associate in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, has a degree in Theology and a Post-Graduate Diploma specialising in Adult Faith Formation. She is a Spiritual Director trained at the Heart of Life Contemplative Spirituality Centre and teaches the Catherine of Siena Institute Called and Gifted Workshop. She has run the Alpha Course in various Catholic Parishes since 1999 and is passionate about its effectiveness in growing and re-energising Parishes.
Dr Brigid McKenna
Director, Office of Life, Marriage & Family Archdiocese of Hobart
Brigid McKenna is the Director of the Office of Life, Marriage and Family in the Archdiocese of Hobart, and a lecturer within the School of Medicine at the University of Tasmania. She has a medical degree (UTAS) and a Master’s degree in bioethics from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family. Brigid is married to Michael and they have three children.
Rev Professor Klaus Kiesling
President, International Diaconate Centre (IDC)
Born in 1962, married and father of two sons, permanent deacon of the German diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Professor of Religious Pedagogics, Catechetics and Didactics as well as Director of the Institute of Pastoral Psychology and Spirituality at the Jesuit Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology, Frankfurt / Germany, Vice-President of the IDC since 2005, President since 2009.
Dr Stefan Sander
Manager, International Diaconate Centre (IDC)
Has a doctorate in theology, has been manager of the IDC since 2012. He has been in charge of the formation of permanent deacons in the Diocese of Osnabrück, in the northern part of Germany, since 2000; is trainer for group dynamics; is ethics advisor in the healthcare sector; is married and father of two sons (Vincent, 16; Elias, 9) and daughter Charlotte, 12. He has published several publications on the theology of diaconate.
Mr Michael McKenna, KCHS, Director, Office of liturgy Archdiocese of Hobart, Liturgical Master of Ceremonies to the Archbishop of Hobart.
