Usingthevoiceandthebreathtopromotehealingislargelyabsentinwesternpsychotherapy;however,thisapproachiscommonlyfoundinthephilosophyandpracticesofyoga.Thoughyogaismostlyrecognizedinthewesternworldasaphysicaldiscipline,yogaphilosophyisalsoanchoredinthenotionthatwecanrestoreourbody,mind,andspiritthroughsoundvibration(NādaYoga)andbreathcontrol(Prāṇāyāma).Althoughsomeofthesepracticesarebeingintroducedthroughmindfulnessapproachesandmusictherapy,notenoughattentionisattributedtothestudyofthehumanvoiceanditscapacitytosupportandinspirehealing.Inthistalk,Iexploretheapplicationofsingingandbreathingpracticesfromyogaandvocalpsychotherapyincounsellingpsychology.ChristinaisaMAcandidateincounsellingpsychologyatUVicandholdsaBFAinmusic(voice)andreligionfromConcordiaUniversityinMontreal.SheisagraduateFellowattheCentreforStudiesinReligionandSocietyandacertifiedyogateacher.Herresearchfocusesontheintegrationofsingingandbreathingtechniquesfromthetraditionsofyogaandpracticesofvocalpsychotherapyincounsellingpsychology.
