Chapter 1 Work in progress

Icelandic Chronicles

Watercolours created when I was in Iceland as an artist in residence. My home was in Herhùsid, Siglufjördur, in Arctic Iceland. I was lucky enough to experience many weather conditions; rain, ice, wind, cold and not so cold, wonderful sunny days and even witness the wondrous Northern Ligths.

Chapter 1, Continuation... ..The impermanence of things... ...the lightness of linen and the animated surface of its irregular weave. A veil which moves with every breath of air : apparent fragility and obvious tangibility of its form where memories can be imprinted.

Chapter 1, Continuation... Animated Moments from 2004 to 2008. Traces of our lives; written in our mind, of uncertain meaning, printed with oil on a transparent surface. These moments, painted on long rectangles, have the walls as background. The shadows of these traces can be projected on the walls when the light is right. The room is reflected in these long transparent shapes so that the objects and the people present mix with the painting creating a new perspective, new moments.

Oil on polyester, 120cm x 40cm.

Verticales du Temps / Time’s Veticales

www.nadinearrieta.com [email protected] Mobile : 06 12 60 64 96

This show with Maité Pébay and Catherine Le Roux was presented in October 2009 by the Arts and Cultural Services of the city of Anglet, France. Photographs, paintings, a slide show and three books were part of the exhibition. Verticales du Temps came out thanks to the combined creative input of three artists; Maité thought the idea through and Catherine brought back from China the amazing photographs which truly served as a solid base for the show. The exhibition asserted how modern China is informed by its past, how it permeates modern life.

Chapter 3

Time and the veiling of memories

Solo show at Grantham Galleries, Auckland, New Zealand in 2002. The memorizing process is complex and seems to depend as much on social structures as on purely physical make-up. The veil in front of some of our memories, which prevents us from recognizing clearly our souvenirs, might not be so much an alteration than a simplification exerted by our brain. Under the veil, our reality can only be partially perceived not to say imagined.

Traces in the wind

Voyage to Newfoundland in 2002.

Scaled Down, group show at the Lane Gallery, Auckland, N.Z, in 2002. (Watercolour and Indian ink on paper.)

Moments recorded while driving through Newfoundland, Canada, as I was an artist in residence in Pouch Cove on the Avalon Peninsula. Pouch Cove is a small seaside town north of the capital St. John’s. These moments speak about the crisp blues of the sky, the ocean, the frozen lakes and rivers. They suggest stories about the wind that blows from the Atlantic with unforgiving strength and seems to shape landscapes and people alike; here everything seems to be but traces in the wind.

Solo show at Chiaroscuro, Auckland, New Zealand, in octobre 2001. As one of the threads that weave our beings, time is a recurrent subject in the arts. Time explores the idea of memory and the relative nature of time past, present and future. The Interval Series deal with the fugitive instant situated between one moment and another. The Interval Series on paper explore more specifically the idea of memories willingly hidden by the mind.

Chapter 6

Silent Words

Solo show at Chiaroscuro, Auckland, New Zealand in April 2000. The lines of our landscapes and buildings shape our reality; our moods also have an influence on how we see our surroundings. Our reality is often quite different from the theoretical knowledge we have of the world. Silent Words is about a reality which is fashioned by the fugitive moments of our human experience.

Silent Words, oil on canvas. 76cm x 102cm. 1999. Private collection, Auckland, N.Z.
