NAE IS IN FULL SWING…
Straight out of Venice Biennale, Doug Fishbone’s artist designed miniature golf course lands on the fairways of Hyson Green, Nottingham. We invite you to play a round of this sculpturally brilliant course, full of obstacles and playful encounters, which prompt us to think about the world we are in. We welcome back past exhibitors, including John Akomfrah, Hetain Patel and Yara El-Sherbini, and we welcome a new addition to the course, Reactor, with their Florida style alligator. If a busy work schedule is getting you down, Nottingham artist Candice Jacobs’ Sunscreen invites you to download a free screensaver, each designed by one of 40 Midlands artists.
Also this season, we welcome back Saturday Art Club for young people and families, and NAE CaféBar reopens its delicious menu. Our annual food and culture festival, Melting Pot, returns celebrating the vibrant sights,
sounds, and tastes of our international neighbourhood. Look out for stalls by some of Nottingham’s valued centres of community, including Women’s Culture Exchange, Himmah and Screaming Carrot. We continue our partnership with Nottingham Beyond Borders, in a week that honours the positive contributions that refugees make to society. We also celebrate the birthday of a long-term collaborating partner, Manushi, who lead our weekly Kathak classes, turning 20 years old in a central gallery exhibition and a celebratory evening of performance.

Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf is a fully playable, miniature golf course, designed and made by 10 leading voices from the contemporary art world. Visitors are invited to tee-off solo, or come as a group of friends and family to see who can putt the winning score!
Regardless of who wins, Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf promises a playful and thought-provoking journey for all. Amongst other obstacles, the exhibition challenges players to pitch their ball across the treacherous straits of the English Channel, traverse hazardous checkpoints, survive the allures and pitfalls of 21st century living, whilst negotiating

Beyond the sculptural brilliance of the greens, by playing a round and immersing oneself in the game, visitors will connect with important cultural topics including migration, global warming and globalisation, and experience a world misshapen by our consumer habits and desires.

Leisure Land Golf was originally produced in 2015 by EM15 for the premiere presentation by the East Midlands at the Venice Biennale. EM15 is a collective of arts organisations from the East Midlands: NAE (Executive Producer), QUAD, One Thoresby Street and Beacon Art Project with support from Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham.

Conceived by Candice Jacobs, Sunscreen is an online project of 40 digital artworks in the form of downloadable screensavers. Visitors to Sunscreen (sun-screen.uk) are invited to select and install their screensaver of choice onto their own work stations for free. Only flickering into life when you have momentarily disconnected from your PC, the digital artworks intend to offer a precious moment of reprieve from the working day, and remind us of the blurred space that exists between work and leisure.
The Sunscreen artists all have a connection to the region and have been invited to respond to the theme of leisure.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Nottingham-based dance company, Manushi, this exhibition explores the history of the organisation and presents images of some of their most memorable performances. Having worked with Manushi for a number of years, NAE is pleased to showcase their work, which has inspired a passion for South Asian dance. The exhibition launch begins a year of celebrations (see page 11).

NAE forms a key venue in this city-wide festival, which showcases the creativity of Nottingham Trent University’s students in their diverse explorations of photography as a medium. NAE will host a selection of degree show exhibitions, providing a platform for soon-to-be graduates from the BA (Hons) Photography programme.

Sounds of Belief envelops the entire Central Gallery in sounds of worship and practices of belief. Developed by Fayrouz Kaddal with Daniel Merrill, the project was inspired by Kaddal’s experience of living in Hyson Green for one year. Struck by the diversity of spiritual groups in the area, Kaddal was inspired to explore the unique sounds through which belief is expressed, whilst also identifying the commonalities across practices (see page 9).

Focusing on the relationship between art and public space, this discussion event is the culmination of months of conversations with artists, institutions and communities across the city undertaken by Italian curator Claudio Zecchi. The event will explore how art engages with the local community, and the legacy of these relationships.

With each golfing green designed by an acclaimed artist including Yinka Shonibare MBE and John Akomfrah OBE, this will be an exhibition launch like no other. Join Leisure Land Golf creator and artist Doug Fishbone for a game of mini-golf like no other! Known for using humour in his work as a means to critique, Doug will putt his way through the 10-hole course, discussing key themes of the exhibition and his wider practice. Doug will nominate visitors to play the course, becoming a part of this unique participatory artwork. Please book for one round, either at 6pm or 7pm.

ON THE GREEN WITH HETAIN PATELGALLERY TOUR

Hetain Patel will provide an artist’s perspective in creating his golfing green. Having graduated from Nottingham Trent University, his practice encompasses live performance, video, photography and sculpture. He has presented work at Tate Modern, Sadler’s Wells and TEDGlobal. Patel will provide insight into how he creatively responded to the project brief and how the piece sits within his wider practice.

Doug Fishbone is joined by exhibiting artists Ellie Harrison and Reactor to reflect on the nature of participatory art, and how context has the potential to influence meaning. Known for her work challenging the absurdities of the capitalist system, Harrison joins the conversation via Skype as she participates in her project The Glasgow Effect. Nottingham-based collective Reactor create work exploring the ways in which culture and common beliefs hold together specific social groups.

Fifty women from Syria, all forced into exile in Jordan, came together in Autumn 2013 to create and perform their own version of The Trojan Women, the timeless Ancient Greek tragedy about the plight of women in war.Following the film will be a panel discussion featuring two speakers from Syria in addition to Dr Agnes Woolley from Royal Holloway College, University of London, and Emeritus Professor Roger Bromley from University of Nottingham.

Hurvin Anderson’s art explores themes of memory and place. He is best known for evocative paintings of lush landscapes, urban
barbershops and sites of leisure where the mind is free to wander, often alluding to his Caribbean heritage. A new painting from this exhibition has been selected to enter Arts Council England’s national art collection as part of their 70th Anniversary celebrations.
