April 24-27, 2013 Gaylord Palms® resort & Convention Center orlando, fl

Dear Colleague,

Get ready to join us in the Sunshine State for the NAGAP 26th Annual Conference! The Conference Planning Committee has been working tirelessly to create a program that is intellectually stimulating and professionally relevant, with an abundance of networking opportunities and a little time to relax and refresh. You’ll find all this and more in one great location – the Gaylord Palms® Resort in sunny Orlando! The Gaylord Palms® Resort includes a spa, waterpark, on-site dining in five restaurants and many retail opportunities. It is truly everything in one place and just a few miles from the theme parks that make Orlando famous!

Again this year, the Professional Development Committee has planned a Pre-Conference Institute (PCI), which is a half-day program on April 24, 2013, at the Gaylord Palms®. Featuring panel discussions and presentations on comprehensive marketing and recruitment plan development, the PCI is an intensive program structured to allow participants to delve deeply into this important topic.

The conference will kick off with the Welcome Reception in the Exhibit Hall on Wednesday evening. This reception is a great way to network with colleagues and meet exhibitors while enjoying delicious food and drinks. We hope you will make your travel plans accordingly to be able to join us.

On Thursday, we are fortunate to have Sally Hogshead, renowned speaker, author and the world’s leading expert on fascination, as our keynote speaker. She will share her thoughts on how we can stand out in a competitive environment by learning the art of fascination and the specific ways we fascinate. Thursday evening’s off-site event will take us to Cuba Libre, celebrating the rich Cuban heritage of the region with mojitos, salsa dancing and cigar rolling.

Joining us Saturday morning for the closing plenary is Thad Henry, Special Assistant to the President for Leadership and Advancement at Pfeiffer University. He served on the faculties of The University of New Haven and Columbia University teaching on the topic of leadership, and will share his thoughts on leading alongside and with purpose.

We remain committed to making the educational offerings current and relevant so they meet the membership’s diverse needs and interests. This year our conference has been built around the theme of “Developing Leadership and Meeting Challenges in Graduate Enrollment Management.” Our educational sessions span admissions policies and processes, career and staff development, graduate student support and financial aid, legal and ethical issues, marketing and recruitment and student services as well as leadership. From graduate admissions professionals to educational administrators, enrollment management decision-makers, student affairs professionals and beyond, this conference is designed to meet your needs. All are encouraged to attend!

We all work hard and are committed to our fields. This conference is a chance to step back, connect with colleagues and remind ourselves why we do this important work. On behalf of the Conference Planning Committee, I invite you to join us in Orlando. You deserve to be celebrated.

See you there!

Anna B. Jordan, 2013 Conference Chair

Opening Keynote Address: Fascinate – The Shortcut to Persuasion

Sally Hogshead, Chief Fascination Officer, Fascinate, Inc.

Sally Hogshead is the Chief Fascination Officer of Fascinate, Inc. She is an international keynote speaker for some of the world’s most prestigious events and a recent inductee into the Speaker Hall of Fame. Her proprietary research has

been published by both HarperCollins and Penguin and translated into 14 languages. In 2012, she was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame, a lifetime award for speaking excellence and professionalism held by fewer than 200 people.

Using her science-based Fascinate system, she teaches how to instantly persuade and captivate in a world with a nine-second attention span.

Sally frequently appears in national media, including NBC’s Today Show and the New York Times. The press has described her as “the marketing mistress of fascination” who has “changed the face of North American advertising.” Reality TV show Making It Big dedicated an episode to Sally's leadership and creativity. She is frequently described as an “icon.”

WHAT SALLY BELIEVES

The world is not changed by people who sort of care.

You don’t learn how to be fascinating. You unlearn how to be boring.

It’s not enough to be the best if nobody notices or cares.

You can be comfortable, or innovative, but not both.

Stand out, or don’t bother.

Sally’s six-word bio: Radical ideas, passionate action, keenly executed.

Keynote sPeaKers enhanced education sessionsIn an effort to meet individual learning styles and provide enhanced networking opportunities, NAGAP is again offering various format options for educational session offerings for the 2013 Annual Conference. Please view the session topics on pages 6-9 for a list of the sessions we expect to offer. Each session indicates the category topic and presentation format.

Engage with Panelists. Panels consist of three to four participants and a moderator. These professionals, from across the country and around the world, discuss the topic at hand and bring perspectives informed by their expertise and related experience.

Discover and learn from Presentations. These are educational sessions in which the presenter(s) shares information with a theater-style audience. Presenters integrate media (e.g., PowerPoint, video clips, links to websites) and engage the audience throughout the course of the session. Presentations are structured to allow time for audience participation, take-home messages and questions and answers.

NEW FOR 2013 Hear best practices in a Rapid Fire session. Each discus-sion leader is given just 10 minutes to present best practices. Four to five discussion leaders will present current, relevant cutting-edge information and best practices on hot topics in graduate enrollment management. Time will be scheduled for Q and A so that session participants can interact with presenters.

Participate in a Special Interest Forum. The Special Interest Forum (SIF), led by a facilitator, is a roundtable discussion during which attendees may discuss a specific topic of interest in a small group setting. This format maximizes the opportunity for open dialogue among conference attendees, as participants share their experiences and thoughts.

Learn what various companies are doing and can offer the field of graduate enrollment management in a Vendor Presentation. Participants receive in-depth details on specific products or services that they may be considering using in their daily work. Similar in structure to a presentation, vendors share how a product or service works and how it may address specific needs.

NAGAP Resource Center NAGAP will once again offer an area exclusively for networking. The time between sessions will be approximately 15 minutes to facilitate communication.

We are asking each conference attendee to bring a supply (approximately 25) of the best promotional materials their respective schools use to share with other attendees. These materials will be available in the networking area. If you are looking for additional resources, this is the place to look for extra materials you want to take home with you. This area will also feature a job and message board for posting open positions at your institution, looking for jobs or to leave messages for colleagues.

Community Service Project the need.More than half the students in Central Florida can’t afford lunch let alone school supplies. In many cases, devoted teachers spend between $500-$1,000 of their own money to buy supplies for students and classrooms.

our solution helps Bridge the Gap While Bettering the Community and environment.A Gift For Teaching’s concept is beautifully simple: local businesses take unwanted supplies or surplus merchandise that would otherwise get thrown away and donate it for distribution through the Free Stores for teachers. More than 10,906 teachers from Central Florida’s 323 public schools can then “shop” for free to make sure the more than 171,566 students in the community have what they need to learn. In addition, A Gift For Teaching not only provides opportunities for success for students, teachers and businesses, but it does so through an innovative and environmentally sound concept. In 2007 and 2010, A Gift For Teaching was recognized by the Florida Council of Sustainability as the Most Sustainable Non-Profit in Florida. Since inception, A Gift For Teaching has diverted 4,070 tons of waste from landfills.

maximizing donations While maximizing students’ success. For every $1 received at A Gift For Teaching, $10 worth of supplies goes back to the classroom.

to donate, please go to www.agiftforteaching.org and click on “Donate Now”. Make sure to dedicate your donation on behalf of NAGAP so that we can track how much our members give!

The dolphin lagoons at Discovery Cove hold three million gallons of water – enough water to fill four Olympic-size swimming pools.

SeaWorld Orlando’s Manta roller coaster’s first drop provides all the power the flying coaster needs to speed for the next 3,000-plus feet, even through multiple loops, inversions and twists.

guests have experienced Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, and more than two million Butterbeers have been sold at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida is the country’s only roller coaster where guests can choose the soundtrack to their ride from songs representing five different genres of music and features three world’s-first maneuvers – the Double Take (world’s largest non-inverted loop), the Treble Clef (track bent into the shape of a treble clef music symbol) and the Jump Cut (a spiraling negative-gravity move).

Many of the structures and facades in Universal Studios Florida are modeled after sets from famous movies and television shows, including “Pretty Woman,” “The Godfather” and “The Cosby Show.”

Seuss Landing at Universal’s Islands of Adventure is so true to the works of the famed children’s author that you won’t find a single straight line – even the trees are crooked.
