OCTOBER 2017 | FAN | 5

As I write this letter, we have just concluded

another board meeting.

So far this year, we have seen close to 20

new members join our local association!

Last year, we totaled 55, which led Texas and the country, and it is amazing to see

us off to such a good start in our 2017-2018

association year.

As a reminder, we are having a membership

drawing on June 28, 2018, in which every

active member will be entered, with some

great prizes to be won, including a $500 gift

card (see page 3).

Our PAC numbers continue to grow, but

with the cancellation of the national

meeting, our national PAC lost out on

approximately $100,000 in contributions

which are normally raised at that event.

John Norman continues to be an excellent

steward of our finances and reads the

"fine print’’ to be sure we are doing all the

things we are supposed to and manage our

investments in a prudent manner.

What can you say about the amazing Karen True that hasn’t been said already? (No,

she did not pay me for the plug.) What she

does for us behind the scenes is absolutely

incredible. Our budget this year promises

to continue to deliver programming

our membership wants while lowering

operating costs.

Last month, we saw a new format for our

Lunch ’n Learns with a panel discussion on

time management, featuring Dana Call, David Sims, and Alisia Vasquez.

My hope for each of you is that during Life

Insurance Awareness Month you were able

to make a meaningful impact on the lives of

your clients. Best of wishes to you on closing

out your year, and I hope you reach your

goals. Let us know how NAIFA-Dallas can

continue to support your business!

Regards,

Danny

KAREN’S KORNERKaren H. True | Executive Vice President

In Honor of Veterans Day November 11: Lives Laid DownEditor’s Note: Let’s reflect on the significance of Veterans Day in light of recent current events.

“Have I been a good man?” is the poignant question that an old warrior wrestled with

in the final scene of the movie, Saving Private Ryan. He said it surrounded by grave markers of the soldiers who died that he might live. Survivors of the World Trade Center attacks have some of the same lingering questions as many combat veterans... “Why have I survived?”

Inscribed on the WWI memorial in Olympia is the Biblical verse, “no greater love has a man than this that he lay

down his life for his friends.” Death in combat is life’s greatest metaphor related to the significance of the cross in Christian faith. Most of us would agree that death on our behalf should elevate us to a higher purpose in our lives. Have we allowed ourselves to truly be changed in response to lives laid down for us?

Frederick Buechner writes that “when one dies so that I may live, it imposes a terrible burden on my life. From that point on, I cannot live any longer just for myself... my debt to him is so great that the only way I can approach paying it is by living a life as brave and beautiful as

his death.”

Seattle’s Garden of Remembrance has this inscription from the Gulf War... “Whether our lives and our deaths were for peace and a new hope, or for nothing, we cannot say. We leave you our deaths. Give them their meaning... We were young. We have died. Remember us.”

May each of us this Veterans Day not only remember the ones who gave their lives on our behalf, but also reflect on how our lives now honor that ultimate gift.
