EDITORIAL
Stephanie Yaggy LaveryNAILPRO Executive Editor • [email protected]
Doin’ It WellT ime.com recently ran a story entitled “9 Dream
Jobs That Actually Pay.” Want to guess what No. 8 was? That’s right; it was nail artist. The
story featured nail extraordinaire and past NAILPRO cover artist Pattie Yankee discussing her job require-ments as well as the best and worst parts of being a nail artist. It was an amazing plug for this celebrity manicurist, but also a huge push for the nail industry.
Note the wording of the title: “Dream Jobs.” This story wasn’t just about making it; it was about
fi nding success in a career that most people only dream about. That says a lot about the
consumer’s view of nails these days. It wasn’t long ago that nail technicians were thrown into the pile of “trade” careers,
considered second-class citizens in the well-respected beauty world. But now,
this amazing profession has been crowned a dream job, along with (according to Time.com) comedian, landscape artist, eyeglass designer
and princess. (OK, the last one is my dream job.) The point is that when it
comes to creative dream jobs, nail artist is now up there as a position worthy of respect.
What’s more, it’s lucrative!Just look at all of the great products that have re-
cently been released, changing the face of nails. From
polish-based appliques and transfer foils that make art a snap to the soak-off gel and hybrid polish craze that allows for two-week, chip-free color, pros and consum-ers alike are loving nails like never before.
Over here at NAILPRO, we are likewise enamored, and therefore have big plans for nails in the New Year. There will be in-depth stories, like a comparison of the major soak-off gel polish brands (see page 108 of this issue), a whole section just on acrylics (you’ll have to wait until February for that one) and, of course, pages and pages of trendsetting nail art and luscious polish collections. What’s more, the publisher of NAILPRO is venturing into the masses by introducing a consumer nail magazine to be sold on newsstands this spring. Nail It! is the fi rst magazine of its kind, featuring nails, trends and styles and how they fi t into a woman’s overall fashion, beauty and lifestyle esthetic. Now your nail-loving clients can have a magazine, too!
Keep up all of the wonderful work that you do into 2013; the industry couldn’t have been raised to this point of popularity if it weren’t for you.
Behind the Scenes…T alk about creative collaboration! This month’s group of imagi-
native minds came together to produce a stellar cover to kick off the New Year. Nail artist Tracey Sutter tapped into her artistic
side to produce ab-stract nail art, while hairstylist Sienree Du, makeup artist Uzmee Krakovszki and photographer Adriana Curcio brought this ice princess to life.

Picture Perfect I have been a nail instructor for the last 14 years in South Florida and a salon owner. I’ve been a NAILPRO reader for years. I wanted to tell other NAILPRO readers to never stop sending photos in for the Portfolio [column]. When
I saw my nail photo in the October 2012 magazine, I showed it to all my friends and co-workers. I love the magazine; it has a lot of materials to work with. Thank you, NAILPRO! My dream is to have my nails on the cover one day.

What I Love About My Job Editor’s Note: We weren’t able to fi t Kathryn’s comment in the 2012 Essentials column about why she loves what she does. But we couldn’t pass up including this somewhere!
I absolutely love my job because I get to be creative every single day. Not one set or service I perform is ever the exact same, and interacting with my amazing clients always keeps me entertained! Many people in the salon industry con-sider our appointments “cheap therapy,” and hearing all the dramas from one
appointment to the next is one of the highlights of this profession for sure!

Here Comes the BrideSOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE, SOMETHING … POLISHED? That was the idea behind Houghton Bride’s fi rst Engage-ment Party on October 14 at NYC Bridal Week, where designer Katharine Polkpaired non-traditional wedding gowns and suits with in-your-face tips. Models received an extended French manicure using OPI Samoan Sand as a base and DS Glow on the tips. The collection’s romantic details carried through to the nails, where a rhinestone-adorned smile line separated the two shades. It’s enough to make a girl say, “I do.”

Offi ce SpaceFOR THE MODERN 9-TO-5 WORKING WOMAN, SQUEEZING IN A MANICURE CAN SEEM IMPOSSIBLE BETWEEN HER JOB, ERRANDS, FAMILY AND SOCIAL LIFE. Liz Whitman and Katina Mountanos, two Harvard Business School graduates working in the beauty industry, wanted to change all that. In July 2012, Manicube was born, a female response to the shoeshine, barber and dry
cleaning services that corporate offi ces have been offering to male employees for years. Manicube supplies a 15-minute manicure for busy profes-sionals at their workplace, sending in licensed nail technicians to perform high-quality, inex-pensive services (each mani is $15). Clients can choose from Essie, OPI, Deborah Lippmann and Chanel polishes and are offered an iPad to browse the latest issues of Vanity Fair or People Magazine while they’re being pampered. And despite cater-ing towards the busy female, Manicube doesn’t discriminate—a men’s Clip & Clean service is also on the menu.
“We know that women have so many com-mitments to signifi cant others, children, parents, friends, household chores, fi tness, and of course, work, and it’s become harder and harder to do it all,” says Mountanos. “We want to make it easier for women to manage their lives … and we want them to look good doing it.” Not only are Moun-
tanos and Whitman interested in women who already have jobs, but for every manicure given, $1 is contributed towards Kiva, a nonprofi t group that gives microloans to female entrepreneurs in developing nations.
Now serving the New York City area, Manicube has plans to ex-pand across the United States. Thinking about extending your salon’s services to local businesses? See the rest of Manicube’s story at manicube.com.

KATHY’S QUICK TIPDrink 8 Glasses of Water a Day
Fluid needs vary, both for individuals and on a day-to-day basis. The fl uids that we require on a daily basis can come by way of our food and the beverages we drink. Fruits and vegetables have a high water content, and the water in juices, coffee and tea will all add up. However, it’s important to maintain a good habit of drinking a small glass of water each hour of the day. Place a pitcher of water on a nearby counter so that as you pass by you are reminded to pour a glass. Keep water in your car to make sipping during your commute possible, and include a glass of water before your meals to keep you a little fuller.

POLISHED LOOK b y K a r i e L . F r o s t
Brave New LaceL ace: Heavy on blink-and-you’ll-
miss-it detail and interesting texture, it’s one of the prized
fabrics that nail artists seek to emulate. But as a fashion accouterment, it has the capability of appearing overtly cutesy, dowdy
or cheap. Thankfully, modern lace emerges this season, owing to overlays on neon (Lanvin), a mishmash of colors and textures (Erdem and Monique Lhuillier), and thickening the detailed dimensions (Derek Lam). Whether sporty or refi ned, this next-gen netting is shaping up to be a sartorial standout.
A contemporary take on lace needn’t stop at wares; why not breathe new life into this favored nail art staple, too? Rather than overlay the entire nail in lace,
cut random bits of netting and use as an accent over a bright neon base.
Guest Artist Paula Knight-Osborne has over 22 years of experience

products in the beauty industry.

3Next, she used blue polish to create lines in opposing directions and
then filled in the spaces with yellow.2She started her abstract design
with a striper brush and painted slashes of pink polish across the nails.
1Suttter prepped the model’s nails and then fit a clear, full-coverage tip
to her nails.
A glowing girl appears out of the icy abyss, bathed in golden light, swathed in pastels, and brings forth nails adorned with abstract art. This is our Jan-uary cover. Tracey Sutter is an artist in both the classic sense of the word
and in terms of nails, and she brought her unique talent to the set. The nail art was created with pastel polishes swiped in random patterns until she was satis-fi ed with the results. Makeup artist Uzmee Krakovszki lightened our model’s skin and used pastel color makeup in a watercolor effect across her eyes and cheeks; she then covered the model’s skin in shimmering dust. Hairstylist Sienree Du cre-ated a texturized updo and weaved silver chains through the hair to enhance the princess-like aesthetic. Finally, expert beauty photographer Adriana Curcio adeptly created a set where our model would appear as though she were fading into the light, all the while allowing the nails to maintain their luster.

a more wearable length. 4She continued with different colors
across the nails. Sutter didn’t follow any kind of pattern; rather, she simply placed the color wherever it looked good.

WORKSHOP b y C a r l a C o l l i e r
While the job of a nail professional is to enhance the natural nail, unfortunately we can cause harm—even if by ac-cident—if we aren’t careful. One of the most important areas to pay attention to is the hyponychium. The hyponychium is a thick band of skin that creates a waterproof barrier between the nail bed and the fi nger, and can be easily separated by over-fi ling the nail plate or aggressively cleaning under the free edge. This barrier seal prevents mois-ture, bacteria and germs from entering the body. Doug Schoon, chief scientifi c adviser at CND, calls this part of the nail a “guardian seal” and writes in his book, Nail Structure and Product Chemistry, that the seal “protects the nail bed from pathogens under the free edge.” He adds, “to break this seal can cause infection that could potentially lead to nail plate loss.”
Newer techniques used to prep the nail plate through the temporary removal of oils and moisture with dehydrators (combined with the application of an ac-id-free primer) are much more effective and comfortable for the client. Heavy-handed nail technicians armed with an electric fi le or heavy abrasive can cause all kinds of issues for the client, from uncomfortable burning to nail disorders like onycholysis (separation of the nail bed) to product allergies. Product aller-gies can occur when the nail plate has been thinned so much that the products penetrate the nail, causing overexpo-sure of the skin. While there are several factors that can cause onycholysis, nail techs want to be 100 percent sure that they aren’t responsible for causing it. If separation of the nail plate occurs, bacteria can enter and cause an infec-tion. Instruct a client with onycholysis
The Underside of Nails
Care and protection of the natural nail is our main responsibility as nail profes-sionals, and this includes the oft-neglected underside. Whether it’s a basic manicure or an extensive nail enhancement, the backside of the nail needs
attention. The basics of a simple manicure are the fi rst thing taught in beauty school. One of the most fundamental procedures we learn is to clean the underside of the nail, as certainly no manicure would be complete without taking the time to check this little space under the free edge. It is of the utmost importance that we know how and why to care for this delicate area so that we can educate our clients as well.
Paying attention to
the back of the nail is crucial for great nail
care as well as your clients’
health.

to keep the nail plate as clean and dry as possible. Tell her not to use any kind of tool to clean out the area as this could cause further separation. Keep in mind that very fi ne buffers and fi les used to create a high shine on the nail plate can cause issues as well because of the heat produced by friction during buffi ng.
Clients can also cause separation by using their nails as tools or by accidental-ly jamming something between the free edge of the nail and the hyponychium. This can be painful until the nail grows back and adheres back to the skin. Dam-age to the hyponychium can also cause the disorder pterygium, which is when a thick, abnormal tissue grabs onto the bottom of the nail plate as the nail grows out. In regard to this disorder, Doug Schoon points out that “the condition can be inherited, but it is almost always a result of trauma or an allergic reaction.” Again, as nail professionals, we never want to be the cause of this. Remember
that this tissue is very sensitive and will cause the client serious pain if pushed back. When applying sculptured nails and nail forms to a client with this condition, be extremely careful. If the nail form is not positioned correctly, it can cause pain and even cut this delicate area. It’s a good idea to apply cuticle oil here at every service and recommend an oil that the client can use daily at home. This is especially important for clients that work with water, paper or fabric; these materi-als extract moisture from the nails and hands which may result in dry, cracked or bleeding skin.
Natural Nail Manicure The gentle approach is always the one to take when dealing with the natural nail. Cleaning during a manicure is easily done by wrap-ping the tip of an orangewood stick with cotton, saturating it with some cuticle remover and then gently running the tip under the free edge. It can also be gently brushed out with a manicure brush and
soapy water. Overlays
When cleaning the underside of a natural-nail overlay, tread carefully and use a skinny, pointed diamond needle bit to lightly skim the backside of the natural nail without touching the hyponychium. This will clean out and remove any visible stains. Use that same bit at a 45-degree angle and lightly blend

the very distal edge of the natural nail fl ush with the enhancement material. This technique also prevents the natural nail from curling away from the product. Be sure to recommend that the client use cuticle oil regularly to keep the natural nail hydrated.
Sculptured Nails Using the same needle bit, level out any ledges or product that may have seeped under the form during application. At the end of your fi ll service, use your bit to level the product under the natural nail so that the product grows out evenly with the natural nail.
Tips & Overlays Check the under-side for glue residue and use the same bit
to remove any found, taking care to stay away from the quick.
Small details, like caring for the un-derside of the nail, are not really small. Unfortunately, many nail techs skip this important step, focusing so much on the design and the art of our trade that they forget the fundamentals. Attention to detail is what your clients will notice and will keep them loyal to you for years to come.

Tips for Electric File • Stabilize your hand by resting it on the table anytime you are using an electric fi le. • Use your pinkie or ring fi nger to steady yourself and to gain complete control over the
electric fi le. • Electric fi les can do serious damage to the top surface of the nail if used with a heavy
hand, and the backside of the nail is no exception. • Be extremely careful when cleaning the backside with a pointed bit. • Never drill the natural nail out from the backside of an enhancement. This practice can
lead to an infection if the nail loosens from the product and gaps are created for water to seep in.

SAVVY SALON b y S t e p h a n i e Ya g g y L a v e r y
1 The nail space is a custom creation. When Engelhard arrived at Byuti, the
nail section was nothing more than a lounge chair (that she had brought from home) perched on a box and a basin to soak clients’ feet. But looking at the nail
department now, you would never have guessed that. Engelhard was fortunate that Petersen gave her creative control over the nail department, which she has since turned into a sanctuary, complete with a curtained pedicure section and sleek manicure tables window-side, where clients can gaze at the passersby.
2 The salon’s strength is built on education.
“Education is the backbone of what we do here,” says Peterson. “You’re never too old to learn more.” That mentality cre-ates a strong foundation for every service department, including nails. Engelhard is up on the latest products and nail trends and, at the time of our visit, she herself was gearing up to attend the NAILPRO Sacramento Show, even offering sugges-tions for education classes (she plans to boost her knowledge of refl exology).
3 Service quality and customer appreciation is by the book.
From the moment you walk into the salon until you leave, it’s as if you’re experienc-ing a page from “the guide to running a successful salon business” (also known as NAILPRO!). Greet clients with a friendly smile. Check. Provide a sanitized and well-organized space. Check. Make your client feel relaxed and comfortable; possibly offer her a mimosa. Check. Gently upsell. Check. Gain a loyal clientele because of the amazing service. Check, check, check!
4 It has a cool and artistic ambiance. The atmosphere at Byuti feels like
a modish artist’s loft (except that it’s on the ground fl oor) with concrete fl oors, exposed pipes and large open spaces. The hair washing and color mixing stations are right out in the open, lending to that “let’s create” vibe. A beautiful, brightly colored, hand-painted mural covers one wall, adding life to the otherwise minimal-ist and industrial furnishings. Only the spa rooms (for facials and waxing) are behind closed doors.
5 There’s a strong commitment to community.
The salon is thankful for its thriving local community who come to Byuti to get beautifi ed. Likewise, many of the staff members are active in the local arts—therefore, this salon likes to support its residents. A local artist painted the mural, and jewelry retailed at the front of the salon comes from a well-known neighbor. While clients receive their pedicures, they gaze upon a magnetic wall behind Engel-hard’s shoulder littered with signs and postcards advertising area events, such as gallery openings and live music. Those expecting a stuffy salon next to the State Capitol will certainly be surprised by this imaginative gem.
Downtown Sacramento is abuzz with government employees surrounding the State Capitol during the workweek. And while the streets are far emp-tier on the weekends, one business is still bustling: Byuti Salon & Spa, a
full-service salon that caters to politicians and artists alike. Owner Jill Petersen is a hairstylist who opened the salon with the idea of providing high-quality services in a hip and trendsetting environment. Understanding the need for nails, Petersen called upon local nail guru and former colleague Minnie Engelhard to take over the tip department. And with that, Engelhard has transformed Byuti into, as she describes it, “an alluring space where clients can kick off their shoes, relax and spill their guts.”

In 2009, when Valerie Griggs was about to open the fi rst 20Lounge nail salon in Scottsdale, Arizona, she needed something that would help differentiate her brand from the competition. Her solution? Griggs decided to take a shot at serv-

It worked—20Lounge’s complimentary drink offerings have been a big hit with clients. “We started it out as a test in our fi rst location and it went over so well,” she says. “People really couldn’t believe they could come in and actually get that service at that price and get a complimentary glass of champagne.”
Following in the footsteps of high-end hair salons and spas, more and more nail salons across the country are offering gratis drinks to their customers as a way to up their service and give themselves an edge in the increasingly competitive nail salon market. But salon owners need to think beyond just pouring a glass of bubbly—there are legal, fi nancial and practical implications to take into consideration before pop-ping that cork.

POUR It OnFOR 20LOUNGE, DRINK CHOICES WERE A BIG PART OF ITS
INITIAL MARKETING PUSH—THE TAGLINE, AFTER ALL, IS “BEAUTY AND BUBBLY SERVED DAILY.” Griggs thinks that
more nail salons are incorporating alcohol with their services because nails have become more upmarket and appeal to a broader status in the personal care market. All 20Lounges (Griggs is planning to open 10 more 20Lounges by the end of 2013) offer beer, champagne and wine. “It’s such a big part of the concept,” she explains. “We’re really serving entertainment as well.”
Another salon that has had success with mixology is Fleur de Lys in Port-land, Oregon. Owner Kim Paulson was looking for a way to stand out from oth-er salons, so she developed a menu complete with martinis, cosmopolitans and lemon drops, plus mimosas during the weekends. They also have a martini of the month—usually infl uenced by the season—and offer lavender lemon drops in the spring and cherry lemon drops in the summer. “Lemon drops seem to be our most popular drink; it’s easy to make and it’s really fun,” she says.
Clients are asked to choose the drink they’d like during their service when they book their appointment. Paulson says the salon’s Martini Pedicure is the most popular, especially with friends who book appointments together and get to mix manicures with drinks and socializing. “I think people like to have a cock-tail after work,” she says. “We don’t do a big martini manicure because when you’re getting a manicure it’s hard to have a cocktail. … We do a bigger martini pedicure business. We have fun straws that are short so people can drink when they get their nails done.”
“I go there because I get
a glass of bubbly and a
great service at an affordable price, and it
feels like it’s a luxury.”
CYA: Cover Your Alcohol
Be warned: Salon owners will tell you that once you’ve started pouring, you’ll have to keep the good times fl owing. A salon that becomes known for gratis drinks won’t be able to turn off that tap, or they’ll risk disap-
pointing—or worse, losing—customers. “You’ll never be able to stop serving once you get a reputation for being that kind of space,” says Fleur de Lys’ Paulson.
Griggs knows this from experience. “We actually pulled it for a while, thinking it wasn’t that critical,” she says. “But a lot of the customers couldn’t believe we weren’t doing it, it was such a big perk to them.”
Which means that if you do choose to serve, you’ll need to fi nd a way to work the alcohol expense into your budget. According to Griggs, the cost is the biggest downside, especially as you’ll likely buy at retail prices that can really add up. “It does cut into your revenue,” she says. “You can pour a lot and not realize what you’re spending.”
Paulson has dealt with the expense by building the cost into the services; both Fleur de Lys’ Martini Manicure and Martini Pedicure costs 10 dollars more than the regular variety.
Finally, think about how your salon’s ambience will be affected by the types of drinks you offer and when you will offer them. You may want to create a mood of fun and “let the good times roll” but that might not be the right environment for your clients who are looking for a quiet and relaxing salon experience. “People tend to get rowdy, and they giggle and they laugh and it changes the atmosphere,” Paulson says.
Pros and cons of spirits aside, the simple gesture of serving an on-the-house drink to clients is a way of showing them how much you appreciate their business while increasing your salon’s indulgence quotient. “Our customers will tell you, ‘I go there because I get a glass of bubbly and a great service at an affordable price, and it feels like it’s a luxury,’” says Griggs.

LIQUOR LiabilitiesI f you’re thinking about
adding a little buzz to your salon, there’s some good
news. Your basic general liabil-ity, business owner policy and package policies will cover your business if you decide to offer drinks, says Anne Cassidy, vice
president of Affi nity Insurance Services in Hatboro, Pennsylva-nia, and a Professional Beauty Association provider who has been offering insurance services to salons for more than eight years. As long as you obey your local liquor laws, don’t serve to minors, and are not, as Cas-sidy puts it, “in the business of serving alcohol,” you’re good to go. More good news: Cassidy has never seen a claim that was related to alcohol. She does, however, advise putting salon policies in place for negotiating clients and drinking.
“Once you open that door, then you need to have some dis-cussions with the staff. What are you going to do if someone wants
three or four or fi ve glasses? How are you going to handle this?” she asks. “You don’t want to lose a customer, but at the same time you don’t want them leaving the store rip-roaring drunk, either.”
Griggs is very aware of potential liabilities and, as a result, she says that her salons over-insure. At all 20Lounge lo-cations, the manager and front desk supervisor are responsible for serving and monitoring the drinks. Besides, she likes to keep the nail techs focused on their nail services. At Fleur de Lys, being a small outfi t of four nail techs, everyone has learned to mix and serve. Nei-ther salon reports any problems with over-imbibing clients, and PH

both have a policy of one drink per client.
“Drunk clients just aren’t a problem. The service is 30 minutes long unless you’re in there for a mani/pedi at the same time. And no one is re-ally going to ask for a second glass,” says Griggs.
At Fleur de Lys, each cocktail is made in a standard shaker, which fi lls a small cocktail glass twice—one way of pacing a client’s intake and also keeping the drink fresh during the service. “We’re pretty careful not to over pour, but we also don’t want to serve a weak drink,” says Paulson. “It’s a pretty fi ne line, but most of the people we
serve get it—they’re not look-ing to get smashed here.”
But there is a catch. Learning your local liquor laws, which vary by state, is non-negotiable—and not exactly a walk in the park. First, fi nd out if it’s even pos-sible to get your salon space licensed, and then talk to your state licensing agency, says Michael Cho, an attorney with Bernard & Associates in Newport Beach, California, who’s been advising on liquor licensing for 21 years. In California, for example, your basic choice is to get a beer license, which means no hard liquor. Otherwise, you have to be a full restaurant complete
with kitchen, kitchen staff and menu—only the celebrity chef is optional. Or you can try to get licensed as a bar, but as Cho notes, that can be a diffi -cult license to get since many communities want to keep a tight reign on the amount of full bar licenses that are in their neighborhoods—even if you don’t intend on opening an actual bar. “Those are the challenges a salon owner has to take on because there really isn’t a specifi c license that allows them to [serve alcohol].” Other states may have different options, but Cho says it’s pretty diffi cult in every state. You can thank Prohibition for that!

ReliefReliefWork comfortably
by preventing wrist pain and serious injury.
B y L e s l i e H e d r i c k
The human hand contains 27 small bones, and an additional 8 bones in the wrist. Together, your hands and wrists make
up some of the most delicate, intricate and hard-working bone-muscle-tendon combos that you have. If you value your career as a nail artist, you must treat your hands with TLC every day and en-sure that you’re not putting undue stress on your most important tools. When you’re working on a client’s hands, do you ever think of your own? You don’t have to be gripping too tightly to cause problems: simply repeating the same motions day in and day out can cause serious stress injuries.
Doctor’s OrdersDr. Erik Bliss from Bliss Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Cincinnati is very aware of the damage a nail artist’s repetitive motions can cause over time. His office happens to be located right next to Spa De Da Salon.
“Preventive care is very important when it comes to your hands and wrists,” says Bliss. “It’s the best way to avoid conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, Guyon’s canal syndrome, de Quervain’s disease and sulcus ulnaris syndrome.”
The way you use your hands and wrists has consequences for your entire arm, straight through your elbow and shoulder, all the way up to your neck and even through parts of your back. “This is called ‘kinematic change,’” says Dr. Bliss. “It’s the same thing we see in the legs when ankle issues affect knees and hips.”
So, what’s a hard-working nail artist to do? Well, first of all, make sure your workstation is ergonomically suited to your body. Follow the “Law of 90 Degrees,” as Bliss says. “The legs should be at a 90-degree angle to the floor. The elbows, hips and knees should all be at about 90-degree angles.” Your feet should be able to rest comfortably flat on the floor with your legs uncrossed. Your forearm should be parallel to the floor. Your wrists should be held in a neutral position. Try not to work with your wrists bent down or up.

Should You Invest in a Hand/Wrist Brace? When it comes to preventing in-jury, “Firm splints can be helpful if worn overnight, but they real-ly shouldn’t be worn during the day. They can actually do more harm than good if they’re worn while you’re going about things like typing,” explains Bliss. This is because immobilizing the wrist forces other muscles to work in ways they weren’t intended to. In other words, if you wore a brace during the day you could wind up with another issue somewhere else.
Preventing Injury with Exercise“If you’re working with your hands day in and day out, you should condition them with a gentle exercise routine every day,” Bliss suggests. “Doing a quick, fi ve-minute routine before starting work, just as runners stretch before a run, can help prevent work-related injuries.”
When exercising your mitts, keep in mind extension and fl exion. Flexion occurs when you bend your palms down
toward your arms, and extension is when you bend your hand back, reaching your knuckles toward your forearm. Take a few moments between clients to pull your fi ngers back toward your wrist--gently. Here are a few additional exercises that can condition your hands and wrists.
Flexion and Extension ExerciseThis is a great general exercise you can do every day before work to prevent stress injuries resulting from repetitive movements.
1 Extend and stretch both wrists and fi ngers acutely, as if they are in a handstand position. Hold for a count of fi ve.
2Straighten both wrists and relax your fi ngers.
3Make a tight fi st with both hands.
4Bend both your wrists down while holding the fi sts. Hold for a count of fi ve.
5Perform 10 repetitions.
6When fi nished, let your arms hang loosely at your side and gently shake them out for a few seconds.

Palm-to-Wall PressSome exercises make use of a wall by giving you something to steady your-self against and by providing a little resistance.
1 Face the wall, standing with your feet hip-width apart. Your toes should be about 8 to 10 inches away from the wall.
2 Bend your elbows at a 90-degree angle, keeping them close to your sides.
3Place your palms against the wall with your fi ngers facing down.
4 Slowly lean in toward the wall. The motion should not be dramatic. It should subtly press your shoulder blades onto your back, closer to one another.
5Be careful not to let your shoulders rise up toward your ears.
6 Hold this position for 30 seconds. No rep-etitions are necessary, but you can do this more than once a day.
Shoulder Blade RiseBecause there’s more to hand and wrist strength than just your hands and wrists, don’t neglect the rest of your body. This exercise addresses your shoulders.
P Stand with your back against the wall, with your heels touching it.P Press your shoulders back to the wall. This motion will bring your
shoulder blades onto your back, a little closer to each other.P Slowly raise your shoulders toward your ears, without allowing your
shoulder blades to lose contact with the wall.P Lower your shoulders again.P Do 10 repetitions. You can do this one every day.

Kneeling Hand Yoga StretchThis exercise comes from our friends on the yoga mat, and it is an excellent, thorough stretch for the entire structure of your wrist, hand and all the muscles of your fi ngers.
1 Kneel on a yoga mat or padded area on the fl oor. Keep your knees close together.
2 Lean forward and place your palms on the mat with your fi ngers point-ing back toward your knees. This will create a 90-degree angle. If it’s too intense, you can widen the angle by shifting your weight forward off of your knees. Just be careful not to face-plant!
3 Slowly begin to peel the back of your hand away from the fl oor. Your palm and thumb will lift. Fol-low through until only your fi ngers remain on the fl oor. This is an ex-treme stretch for all of the muscles in your fi ngers.
4 Slowly lift the fi rst knuckles of your fi ngers up off the fl oor. Then move slowly through the second knuckle, on through the third until your fi n-gertips are resting on the mat with your palms facing out.
5 When you’re fi nished, make gentle fi sts and circle your wrists around for several seconds.
6 No repetitions are necessary. Do this one once a day, or several times per week.
Is a Stress Ball Handy? Many people like to give a squishy stress ball a few rhythmic squeezes
before or after a workday; does this help condition your digits? “Things
like stress balls and power putty are really more effective during treat-
ments after an injury has taken place, for rehabilitation,” says Dr. Bliss.

1 Kneel beside a chair or ottoman. Brace your el-bow and forearm on the seat, holding the weight in your up-facing palm. Your wrist should hang over the edge of the seat.
2Extend your wrist, bending the back of your hand downward.
3Curl your fi st up, bringing the weight closer to the inside of your forearm.
4Be careful not to let your forearm rise from the chair seat.
5Do 20 repetitions.
1
Change the angle of your arm so that the weight in your fi st is perpendicular to the fl oor. Your thumb should be facing the ceiling.
2 When you bend your wrist, you’re still going to be moving it up and down between the ceiling and fl oor. Pretend you’re using a hammer.
3Do 20 repetitions.
1 Change the angle of your arm again. This time, you want the knuckles on the top of your hand to face the ceiling.
2Do 20 repetitions.
1 Change the angle of your arm so that your pinky is facing the ceiling. You’ll probably have to change your position around the chair to get this angle.
2 Again, you will be moving your hand up and down, but it will feel like you’re actually bending it from side to side.
3Do 20 repetitions.
Light Dumbbell Wrist CurlThis exercise uses a weight to engage muscle fi bers typically not worked out. Avoid using a weight that’s too heavy, as you don’t want to strain this delicate joint. A three-pound weight should be just fi ne. You can do this one several times a week, but remember to be gentle with your joints.

What to Watch Out ForTake note of any pain you experience, but warn-ing signs aren’t always specifi cally painful. Some conditions start out as innocent pins and needles in a couple of fi ngers. Here are a few common conditions and their warning signs:
P Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Tingling fi n-gers, mainly through your thumb, index and middle fi nger. You would probably experience this most prominently at night, and may not notice it at any other time, at fi rst. This can happen if your median nerve, which runs along your forearm and into your hand, becomes trapped or pinched.
P Guyon’s Canal Syndrome: Tingling in the last few fi ngers of the hand, as your ulnar nerve is pinched by the Guyon’s canal in your wrist.
P De Quervain’s Disease: Pain along the thumb side of your hand anytime you try to grasp something, make a fi st, or even turn your wrist.
P Sulcus Ulnaris Syndrome: Numbness or tingling in your pinky fi nger and the exterior half of your ring fi nger. It’s caused when your nerve becomes trapped by a passage in your elbow.
P Trigger Finger: Finger or thumb gets locked or stuck in a bent position before snapping straight, sometimes with a “popping” sensation. Your fi ngers might be stiff in the mornings, and you might notice a tender nodule or hard bump at the base of your fi nger. The technical term is Stenosing Tenosynovitis.
P These exercises aren’t guaranteed to keep you away from Dr. Bliss’s chiro-practic offi ce, but it certainly increases your odds for sustaining a long, fulfi lling career--and life.

ANSWER When changing out glit-ter acrylic, you need to take down the bulk of the enhancement close to the natural nail—without touching the natural nail. I usually lay down a thin layer of clear acrylic on the natural nail before the glitter application so I don’t have to worry about soaking it off. (You don’t want to soak it off because it takes too much time.) If a customer comes in with glitter over the en-tire nail, it’s best to use an electric fi le to take it down. By using the right E-fi le bit, you’ll be able to take the excess glitter down and then reapply a new glitter fade to cover up the old product. Remember, there’s no need to get all the way to the natural nail. By capping it with a clear powder, you’ll prevent fi ling into the glitter and causing it to fade. —Greg Salo, president and CEO, Young Nails, Anaheim, CA

Quandaries
I’ve seen a lot of people applying glitter acrylic over the entire nail. What’s the process for when they want a change? —Kaesi Ashden Ortega, Kuna, ID
QUESTION I haven’t had the best experi-ence with acrylics. I’ve tried different brands, brushes, tips and forms, but no matter what I do, I just can’t seem to get a decent set. Help! —Jessica Johnston, Oceanside, CA
ANSWER One of the most important ele-ments of working with acrylic is mastering product control; the other is sticking with one product while doing so. The best way to do this is to research companies and see who is offering classes in your area—then attend as many as you can! —Rachel Mouritsen, NAILPRO Cup Champion and veteran nail tech, Clovis, CA
When using nail wraps (vinyl, paper
or plastic) or appliqués, can you put acrylic over the wrap? If I were to put the wrap down on the natural nail and then overlay it with acrylic, will it lift? Or should the
wrap be put on only after the acrylic, like nail art?—Brittany Luppy
Question AnswerWhen using vinyl, paper or plastic wraps with a good bonder, yes, you can put acrylic over them. I believe the primer is key. [When using a primer] my girls have much more success. I have many acrylic techs that use bonder with UV polishes, Minx, nail polish, Dashing Diva DesignFX, acrylic and other gel lines and hear about much success, with no lifting. I also believe it starts at the prep. If this is not done prop-erly, then it will not work for any service. It’s like building a house, if the foundation is slapped together, then the house will be structurally unsound and problems will happen. However, I’m speaking specifi cally about Simplicity Nail Systems, which is the only product I have found this success with. —Barb Hjerpe, owner/founder, Simplicity Nail Systems, Lillooet, BC, Canada

I seem to have problems with air pockets; have you seen this?—Tiffany Lees, Salt Lake City, UT
A Even the best of us have seen air pockets with acrylic nails. There are two kinds: The fi rst—and less evil—is when there are a lot of tiny air bubbles. These can happen during application when you over-work your product (patting quickly with your
brush) and trap tiny bubbles in your acrylic. They aren’t super dangerous with long-term wear, but they can weaken the acrylic if there are a lot of them. The worst part of these is that they won’t win any clarity awards or please your clients who have encapsulated nail art.
The second type of air pocket—and the most evil—is the big center pocket. More often than not, working too wet causes this. By working too wet, the nail actually absorbs some of the monomer, causing it to swell microscopically. Over time, the nail shrinks back to normal size, pulling away from the center area of the nail and—voilá!—an air pocket. Now, how wet is too wet? Well, not only are you expected to follow the manufacturer’s recommended liquid-to-powder ratio, but you should also know that some nails are just more porous than others. These spongy nails will be a bit more trouble, as they are just begging to suck up some of that monomer from your acrylic. Work a teeny, tiny bit dryer on those clients. I hope these tips help! —Elaine Watson, vice president of marketing and global education director, Star Nail International, Valencia, CA

Why does Shellac pull away from the free edge and sides after I
apply the base coat? I have to keep pulling it down and capping the free edge, but by the time I fi nish the thumb, the product has already pulled away from the free edge on the rest of the nails. —Melissa Berrios, East Chicago, IN
CND Shellac is a unique blend of solvents, monomers and polymers. The solvent blend contributes to the ease of application (it goes on like polish), and the monomers contribute to the toughness (which helps it wear like gel), while the polymers contribute to its quick removal (allowing it to come off in minutes). Because of this unique blend, Shellac needs to be shaken well before ap-plication for even coverage and proper cure and wear.Otherwise, the solvents rise to the top while pigments settle and, if not blended before application (especially when applying colors that haven’t been used in a while), too much of the solvent blend is applied and shrinks back when applied. Be sure to shake your CND Shellac well before application and you should not have any shrinkage. —Roxanne Valinoti, CND educa-tion manager, Long Island, NY

differently. It’s important to pinch the very fi rst layer of gel that’s applied to the form. It’s going to be trial and error. You want to pinch your C-curve before it has hardened too much—but not too soon, or the gel will still
be too soft. I fi nd with Light Elegance gel, for ex-ample, it is within the fi rst 5 to 10 seconds under the Easy Cure Lamp. Pinch and then put the nail back in the light to fi nish curing and set the shape.—Liz Hyerstay-Hill, Eugene, OR

QUESTIONWHAT’S THE
BEST WAY TO ADDRESS
PEELING OF THE NATURAL NAIL
AT THE FREE EDGE?
—Christel Arant, Seattle, WA
ANSWERAlways be sure to buff away areas that are peel-ing, lifting or fl aking prior to applying base coat. A low-grit buffer and oil is the best way to gently remove
peeling without damaging the nail plate. Re-
member to buff only in one direction—not back and forth. When polishing, wrap all polish layers around the free edge of the nail to seal the color and bond all layers of polish together. Have your client apply a protective top coat over your manicure every two to three days to protect both the color and the nails.
—Suzanne Denero, Art of Beauty (makers of Zoya and Qtica) salon and spa coor-
dinator, Cleveland, OH{
{Here’s a consumer question that can assist you with common client complaints.
I have a longstanding dilemma with natural-nail care and/or
maintenance. It is quite frustrating; no matter how hard I try, the nail polish in any manner of combinations or technique in application consistently lifts and peels off my nails, as seen in the picture. I would so appreciate assistance, as nothing has worked to date. Is it me? My physical and chemical body makeup? What can prevent this? I’ve tried virtually everything! —Doreen
Bunton, Rome, NY
ANSWER: Master nail tech Vicki Peters posted this to her Facebook page, and the responses fl ooded in! Here’s a selection of the online conversation:
f That’s hard to answer without knowing what’s been tried already. I always wear gloves if my hands will be exposed to water or cleaning solutions (except for showers, baths and daily hand washing). Wiping the nail plate with acetone or alcohol before applying polish helps some people. If you have su-per smooth nails, nothing will stick to them, so don’t buff them to a glossy shine. No need to rough them up either, unless they’re super glossy already. Using a sticky base coat is great, too. —Elizabeth Allbright
f I, too, have had a client with this issue, and honestly it became a combination of the follow-ing steps: Buffi ng the nail, removing shine and any oils; using Nubar Step One and Two primers; applying the Nubar color and the ultra; and top coat under the UV light. It does make a difference. —Jaquie Duhacek Korethoski
QWhat would cause a top coat to have a white appearance a day after having a pedicure? —Lori Bryan, Peoria, IL
A Not seeing or know-ing what products and procedures you used makes this is diffi -cult to troubleshoot.
However, I suspect it was a top coat that has a UV protectant in it. In certain lighting, you can see the UV—which can look white. —Vicki Peters, master nail technician, Brea, CA
continued on page 106
f Don’t you think that most women lie when you ask them if they use cuticle oil, wear gloves and develop better habits between appointments? I believe if my clients want something bad enough, they will do the proper steps to achieve it. I sell them a fi le and tell them to fi le a little every week so their nails won’t get too long and crack. I tell them to apply one thin coat of top coat every day and use cuticle oil over and under the nails; polish needs moisture, too. Usually after I ask the normal 20 questions to fi nd out why they are having trouble, I get them to admit that they weren’t as careful as they originally thought! —Tess Walters
f I agree with you, Tess! I think what we all need to try and understand is that the healthier the nail, the longer lasting the polish is going to be. So treating the skin and nail with a great oil will help. —Linda Nordstrom
f If this is a client doing her own nails, all precautions and preparations must be done before polish application, including all moisturizers removed from nails so they’re dry and clean. A bonding agent may be used before polish application to ensure lon-ger polish wear. Also, some dish detergents have products in them that remove grease from the plates and will cause this, as will sunscreen and hand sanitizers. Using cuticle oil also helps by keeping moisture in the nails. —Anita Lime-Sims
f When the natural nail is dry, nothing seems to stick to it. That’s why even acrylics lift. If you moisturize the cuticle/nail with nail oil and massage it in, the nail will be moisturized and fl exible, and then the manicure will last at least 12 days. If the cuticle is moist, so is the nail; a moisturized nail prevents the nail from break-ing low when it bends, and nail polish sticks to it (and so do nail enhancements). —Lina Maria Giraldo
f I suggest a nail balancer like OPI Bond-Aid, then CND Stickey, two coats of polish, then Out the Door top coat. Dry for a few minutes and fi nish off with OPI Drip Dry. My natural-nail clients say manicures last anywhere from six to nine days. —Katrina Bernal

tWith thousands of oils to choose from, your options are limitless when it comes to the combinations of treatments you can offer in the salon. Each new idea could translate into a boost in sales and a client who walks away with smoother hands and softer feet.
1Cuticle treatment. It’s important to note that this is the most popular use of oils. You’ll want to
continue using them for treating cuticles for healthy skin and nails.
2 Hand and foot massage. Many of your clients are used to receiving oil-based massages at the
spa, so why not integrate oils into your hand and foot massages? Just be sure your client’s feet aren’t slippery if she is walking out in sandals.
3 Lotion additive. Mix your favorite oil into a lotion for a little extra slip during arm and
leg massages. Turn your services into true spa-like escapes.
4 Pedicure bath enhancer. Create an extra mois-turizing and aromatherapeutic pedicure soak
with the addition of oils.
5 Hand and foot wraps. It’s perfect weather for hot mittens and paraffi n wraps. Massage some
oil onto hands and feet before wrapping for an extra boost of hydration.
6 Callus softener. For gentle callus smoothing, try using a bit of oil along with a foot fi le.
7 Hot oil manicure. Introduce this special service to clients with extra dry skin, soaking fi ngertips
in warmed oil before massaging it into hands and wrists.
For her clients with
excessively dry feet,
Christina Monroe,
owner of Love Those
Toes Mobile Nail Spa
in Bowie, Maryland,
incorporates cuticle
oil into the leg and
foot massage. “The
cuticle oil acts as a
deep moisturizer,
keeping the skin soft
while giving the feet
a nice healthy glow,”
she says. “I encour-
age my clients to
exfoliate three times a
week and use a small
amount of cuticle oil
daily on their toes
and feet, especially
at night, to promote
strong, healthy nails
and soft soles.”

Know Your OilsTake a look at some of the most popular oils that you’ll fi nd in cuticle and massage products, their benefi ts, and unearth the common essential oils they're combined with.
“I use all kinds of oils because I don’t do wet manicures anymore—haven’t in years,” says MJ
Sherer, owner of Nails by MJ in Hot Springs, Arkansas. “I remove the polish, shape the nails,
put cuticle oil on, massage, apply cuticle remover, push back cuticles, have the client wash with
scrub, polish and apply oil at the end of the manicure.”

KeepingIt Clean
Instrumental KnowledgeTechs must take some basic but crucial steps to ensure that they’re providing clean and safe ser-vices. Stacy Mobley, a naturopathic doctor based in Atlanta, stresses washing hands between clients, including scrubbing under the nails with a clean nail brush since bacteria and germs can hide there; she also suggests wearing gloves during services. “HPV is on the rise, and warts are spread by skin-to-skin contact,” she notes. “Gloves prevent this from being spread from client to client, or even from client to tech.” She adds that the salon must vigilantly clean pumice stones used to remove dead skin or that clients bring in their own.
Richard K. Scher, professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College and a nail specialist in New York, recommends that his patients visit
a salon on a regular basis and that they purchase their own sets of instruments to take to salons to cut down on risks. Reusable instruments can be top carriers of bacteria, fungi and viruses if they’re not sterilized properly between clients. As a tech, you might recommend to clients who are con-cerned about cross-contamination that they buy a set of tools they can take home with them or keep at the salon. However, it must be stressed that the clients sanitize their tools at home between each use. Dirty tools, whether they live at the salon or in the client’s home, are still a source of contamination. Scher notes that clients can sterilize their metal tools by letting them sit in boiling water for 15 to 20 minutes before each appointment. Disposable fi les and buffers are also a great salon tool—one use and they’re done. Plus, they can make a savvy marketing take-home
Years ago, Amy Newburger, a New York-based dermatologist in private practice and senior attending physician at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, found herself at a job where she noticed some disturbing “sterilization” processes. She promptly brought up the issue to supervisors—
and later ended up quitting when it wasn’t fi xed. Now Newburger shares her experiences to empha-size that if poor sterilization practices can exist in the medical community, it’s safe to assume that they can exist in salons—whether through a desire to cut corners or by simply not knowing the proper procedures. “I think a lot of salons are under the misconception that they’re sterile, but they’re not; even in the medical community, there’s a certain amount of ignorance,” says Newburger. “But [when working] with warts and hepatitis, there are too many things that you can transmit to take any risks.”
We spoke to Newburger and other medical professionals for some valuable advice on how a salon should regard proper sanitization (cleaning) and sterilization (killing living microorganisms).

gift for the client, helping her remember your salon.
When sterilizing reusable metal instru-ments, you’ll want to check the specifi ca-tions of the procedure—know the recom-mended time of exposure for disinfecting liquids or machines, such as autoclaves. “An instrument has to stay in solution for a certain period of time—a quick dip won’t do—and the solution should be changed twice daily,” recommends Newburger. “Before sanitizing, scrub the instrument clean, and not with just soap and water. Use a jewelry sonicator, since alcohol can dull the edges of metal instruments and shorten the life of your nippers and clip-pers.” After scrubbing thoroughly, heating the instrument will do a great job of killing spores and viruses, such as warts and hepatitis, or you can submerge it in a dis-infectant solution for the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer.
While autoclaves are expensive, they can be highly effective in salons. “Good practices can involve an autoclave, which uses high temperature and high pressure to kill microbes and microorganisms that can cause infections,” explains Scher. “Some sterilizing chemicals are also considered effective.” Mobley adds that UV light can kill bacteria and viruses by damaging bacterial DNA—meaning that it can’t replicate and cause infection. But after exposing instruments to UV light for 25 to 30 minutes, she recommends rinsing off the instrument because though the bacteria are dead, they’re still present on the tool.
Finally, make sure your autoclave, UV lights and/or disinfectant solutions are
productive by following manufacturer guidelines and asking questions about proper use. Newburger recommends that for any machines you might buy, inquire about what microbes it has been tested to kill. “By national law, we as doctors have to show that our autoclaves can kill certain organisms, including fungal infections, TB/staph microbes, etc.,” she says. “The manufacturer should also provide guide-lines on how to check if the equipment is still in working order.” After three to fi ve years of use, bulbs may wear out, for ex-ample, so ask about how the machine can be tested for effectiveness over time.
Footspa SolutionsPedicure tubs are a notorious resting spot for bacteria, fungi and viruses—and un-clean tubs have made headline news and even been implicated in deaths. Thus, it’s a crucial part of any salon’s everyday ac-tivities to ensure that they are impeccably maintained. “For tubs, you want to clean, drain and disinfect between clients and at the end of the day,” says Tony Nakhla, dermatologist, medical director of the OC Skin Institute, and author of The Skin Commandments: 10 Rules to Healthy, Beautiful Skin. “Draining and fl ushing to sanitize prevents spreading fungal infec-tions, such as athlete’s foot.”
Newburger relates that the type of pedicure spa can make a difference when it comes to ease of cleanup and disinfec-tion, i.e., the “continual-fl ow type versus the basin/jacuzzi-propeller type. The kind with water circulating in the pipe and re-entering the tub is harder to clean,” she explains. “If it looks like a sink, with

a drain in the bottom and a closed sys-tem, it’s easier to clean.” Disinfecting the surfaces with Lysol or sodium hypochlo-rite solution (bleach) is a must between appointments, Newburger adds.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides the following guidelines for cleaning pedicure tubs: After each client, drain water and remove debris; clean with soap or detergent, then rinse with clean water and drain; disinfect surfaces with an EPA-registered disinfectant and leave on for 10 minutes or for the manufacturer’s recommended time; drain and rinse with clean water. (For whirlpool foot spas, air-jet basins, pipeless and other circulat-ing foot spas, disinfect by fi lling the basin with clean water, adding the appropriate amount of liquid disinfectant, and turning on the unit to circulate the disinfectant for the entire contact time.) Then, nightly, for circulating spas, remove the fi lter
screen, inlet jets and all other removable parts from the basin and clean out any debris trapped behind or in them; scrub these parts with a brush and soap or disinfectant; rinse the removed parts with clean water and place them back into the basin apparatus; fi ll the basin with clean water and add an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant following label directions; and turn the unit on to circulate the liquid for 10 minutes, or the label-indicated time. (The whirlpool mechanism of the tub must be operating for the entire disinfec-tion period so that the piping and internal components that contain hidden bacteria are disinfected.) After disinfection, drain, rinse and air dry. For simple basins, the EPA recommends the following proce-dure: Drain the basin and remove any visible debris; scrub the bowl with a clean brush and soap or disinfectant; rinse and drain; disinfect basin surfaces with an EPA-registered hospital disinfectant fol-lowing manufacturer’s instructions (again, surfaces must remain wet with the disin-fectant for 10 minutes or the contact time stated on the label); then drain the basin, rinse with clean water, and let air-dry.
When it comes to proper sanitization and sterilization within your salon, it’s your reputation on the line. A slip-up can result in fi nes, salon closure, lawsuits and even death. Don’t take a chance when it comes to knowing the proper procedures to keep your clients—and your salon—safe from harm.
Tracy Morin is a freelance writer and editor based in Oxford, MS.
• Right-handed people tend to wash their left hand more thoroughly than their right hand, and visa versa.
• People have between 2 and 10 million bacteria between their fi ngertips and elbow.
• Damp hands spread 1,000 times more germs than dry hands.
• Germs can live on hands for up to three hours.
• Millions of germs hide under watches and bracelets, and there could be as many germs under your ring as there are people in Europe.

They Nominate Gray
Seems the powerful women of the presidential race have something in common: their love of edgy gray
polish. First Lady Michelle Obama fl aunted Artistic Nail Design Colour Gloss in Vogue at the Democratic National Convention. Then Ann Romney sported a blue-gray lacquer at the second presidential town hall debate. Both women played against type with their nails—no translucent pinks, no French manicures, all guts! No matter what party you align with, you have to admit: These women nailed it!
The votes are in, but it’s not too late to look back at the presidential sup-porters who pledged their party allegiance on their nails. Four years ago, Beyoncé and Solange Knowles both rocked Barack Obama Minx decals
(adhered by the talented tech Lisa Logan, who at the time told us, “While anyone can wear an Obama pin or T-shirt, Solange and Beyoncé are showing their support in a fashionable way. If you’re willing to go the distance and customize your nails, you’re showing that your support is really strong!”). Today, the nail art craze is stronger than ever, and Hollywood types continue to toe their party line with politically-minded designs. The latest: Katy Perry, who tipped her talons in Democratic donkeys, stars, stripes and Obama’s mug, courtesy of Minx. But don’t count Republican candidate Mitt Romney out: Minx’s online Tasting Room offered his nail adhesives as well, some of which featured Romney’s head fl oating over a red, white and blue plaid background! Our vote? Both party’s nail art designs are equally persuasive.
