Introducing The Emotional Thermometer Pillowcase Project

Research shows that a strong social and emotional foundation in childhood powerfully impacts children’s later positive attitudes and behaviours, their academic performance, career path, and adult health outcomes.Classes will be introducing The Emotional Thermometer to students this term. We will be talking about how we can identify and regulate our feelings using the scale and strategies students can use to keep calm.Everyone’s emotions can vary in intensity from strong to weak. But it is when our emotions become extreme and overwhelming that our behaviour often becomes erratic, and this is when we may act aggressively or withdraw.

What is Emotional Awareness? Emotional awareness includes the ability to recognise and understand our own feelings and actions and those of other people, and how our own feelings and actions affect ourselves and others.

What is Self-regulation? Self-regulation is the ability to express thoughts, feelings and behaviours in socially appropriate ways. Learning to calm down when angry or excited and persisting at difficult tasks are examples of self-regulation.Families may want to use this idea at home too when talking to children about how they are feeling and how their feelings are connected to their choices and behaviour.Marika Glouftsis, Student Wellbeing Coordinator [email protected]

Australian Red Cross visited our school last week to deliver the Pillowcase Project to our Year 3 students. The Pillowcase Project is a school based disaster preparedness education program designed to build children’s knowledge and capacity in disaster preparedness. Sponsored by Disney, the program is part of an international pilot currently taking place in five other countries.

From experience, Australian Red Cross knows that teaching children how to prepare for emergencies can help keep their families and communities safe. This project is part of a broader commitment by Red Cross’ Emergency Services to educate the community on disaster preparedness.

In addition to the 50 minute presentation, run free of charge, students received the following Red Cross preparedness resources: • Emergency Card • Emergency REDiPlan Get ready! Activity book • A Household REDiPlan for parents/guardians • A pillowcase to create their own personal emergency kit.

From the Library

Book Fair What a great response to the Book Fair! This year we had 78 orders totalling 169 books – covering a wide range of genres and age groups from picture books to teenage fiction; information texts to craft; fantasy to sport. The school will receive credit at Pegi Williams to buy approximately $700 of books for the library. I thank all the families who felt able to support their child’s literacy in this way.The school order is currently being prepared by Pegi Williams Books – with the books hopefully arriving back at Nailsworth very soon.

Book Whisperers Keep whispering! Reading finishes 1st December 2017 (Week 7) and all those involved will be acknowledged at an assembly.

Readers’ Cup It’s Readers’ Cup time! Reading has started! Students have formed teams of four that will read from a collection of novels ready for a quiz in Week 8. There are three levels of books so that Junior (Years 2-3), Middle (Years 4-5) and Upper Primary (Years 6-7) can be involved. Teams try to read as many of the books in their Cup as they can – not all members need to read all the books – so that as a team they can contribute to the quiz about the books. Participants are also invited to write a question and answer to be included in the quiz. There was a Readers’ Cup meeting last Tuesday, 31st October in the library at which teams selected some of the books which they wanted to be included in their Cup – Junior, Middle or Upper.Happy reading!Nicole Le Mesurier, Teacher Librarian [email protected]

Re: Your Child, Their School, Our Future

Dear parent or carer, As I’m sure you’re keenly aware, education has never been more important for the future of our children. I would like to reaffirm my commitment to you that South Australian schools will receive the funding and support needed to set our children up for life, citizenship and success. On Sunday we unveiled our new Public Education Action Plan: Your Child, Their School, Our Future. We will focus on 5 key areas:

giving children a head start by continuing to invest in the early years focusing on literacy and numeracy to put the basics first – these skills

are the bedrock of a successful education educating students for the jobs of tomorrow as their world will be very

different to ours help for every student to achieve their best – recognising that many

factors influence a child’s ability to learn well supporting our teachers deliver great results with more help in the

classroom and more opportunities to develop expert skills. This plan reinforces the priority this state government places on public education, including an investment of $2.8 billion on school infrastructure improvements since 2002. In addition, the state government will invest $30 million to help an extra 16,000 families on low to middle incomes with the cost of education in public schools. For more information visit www.yourpublicschool.sa.gov.au. Thank you for supporting our public schools and your child’s education. Yours sincerely

Susan Close Minister for Education and Child Development 23 / 10 / 2017
