Doctor DeSoto is a fable. A fable is a story where animals are the main characters, the problem usually uses trickery and the solution is a life lesson. In Doctor DeSoto, the main characters

were Doctor DeSoto, the mouse and Mr. Fox, the fox. Mr. Fox tried to trick Doctor DeSoto by asking him to work on his teeth so he could eat him. Doctor DeSoto then tricked Mr. Fox by

gluing his mouth shut so he couldn’t eat him. Mr. Fox learned not to play a trick on someone who was smarter than he was.

Miya Cat and the Prince

Miya Cat loved to cook and she loved to eat. She would cook all day and into the night, baking

the most delicious cakes and simmering the most delicious stews. She even thought about opening a

restaurant one day. The problem was, she wouldn’t let anyone eat any of her food. She enjoyed the

other animals asking if they could have a bite to eat and she was even more happy to refuse.

One day, a scruffy looking dog knocked on her door. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I couldn’t help but

to come to your house. I’ve passed by many times, but today something smells simply delicious. Can I

ask you what you are making?”

Miya smiled, happy to tell the stranger what was in the oven. “I have finally baked the perfect

cake. I will decorate it with chocolate icing and sweet strawberries from my garden. “

The dog began to wag his tail, imagining the sweet, delicious cake melting in his mouth. “My

name is Ben. When it is finished, might I have a taste?”

Miya smiled again. “I’m sorry, but no. This cake is for a very important person…me!”

“Might you be willing to spare a crumb? I am looking for the best-tasting cake in all of the

land for my wedding.”

Miya laughed, showing her shiny, white, sharp teeth. “You? Who would marry you? Good day!”

She slammed the door.

Weeks went by and Miya had gotten word that a successful bakery had opened in the town but

a few miles away. Prince Benjamin Dog, they said, gave Milly Fox lots of money just for a taste of her

cookies and her kindness. He had just come back from hiking in the woods and was very hungry. Milly,

they said, gave the prince a taste of her cookies before he had even asked. Milly simply said the

traveler looked hungry. When Miya heard this, she became very angry and upset. She shouldn’t have

been so selfish.
