GENERAL NEWS

Year 7 Tutor Identity Assemblies

The Year 7 tutor team have been giving the Year 7 students a bit of insight into their education, training, employment history and interests in our assemblies over the last couple of months. This week Ms Ochwat and Mr Ahmed from the Science Department teamed up to show us a little bit about their love of Science which also links in with National Science Week. They did a food taste test on some willing participants which was really good fun to watch, especially watching George’s reaction to being fed avocado!

Year 7 Fitness February and Inter-form planking competition Year 7 have been focusing on their fitness for the month of February and have set both short and long term goals to improve their fitness. Miss Boulton, Miss England and Miss Simpson showcased extra-curricular opportunities in PE and Dance in assembly and also led some year group fitness and dance activities. Mr Cocksworth’s form 7C took it upon themselves to build up their core strength in registration by planking which led to the first ever JRCS Inter-form planking competition. It was a fiercely contested competition which saw podium finishes for

Thomas Hill 7E (1st), Joshua Adewale 7I (2nd) and Michael Idahosa 7D (3rd) and Mr McMahon 7D (1st), Mr Looby 7B (2nd) and Miss Boulton 7G (3rd). The money raised by the spectators also contributed to the fundraising for the Nicaragua trip.

Miss Duncan Head of Year 7 Go Figure Rock Club About two weeks ago, Key Stage 3 participated in an event called Rock Club. They were involved in planning and designing their very own rock concert and will be given the opportunity to attend a concert at Wembley Arena later this year.

Guste Rudzinskaite, 9G gave us an insight to the event: “Our team enjoyed participating in the creation of the concert stage. It was a fun opportunity where all of our team was involved. There were many things we successfully completed. These included the lighting plan, calculating the profit and the cost, building the stage, designing tickets and t-shirts and advertising our concert. Most importantly, these activities all required strong teamwork, co-operation and communication. Listening to everybody’s different ideas gave us the ability to effectively improve our work. Co-operation and communication helped us a lot when we were presenting our work to the rest of the groups. Everyone in our group contributed very well and positively, which made the project enjoyable”.

Go Figure Tutor Time Our second tutor time activity was based on this riddle: It cannot be seen, cannot be felt, cannot be heard, cannot be smelt. It lies behind stars and under hills, and empty holes it fills. It comes first and follows after, ends life, kills laughter.

Students were asked to guess what the answer was and points were awarded to the following forms for remarkable justification and reasoning of their answers.

Uhlan Jordaan, Logan McKenzie, Abigail Olatunji and Stella Obareti – 7J Yasmine Large, Paige Millington, Jayden Allen, Taylor Jefferson and Sami Deriouch – 8D Esther Aluko, Samual Clark, Ahlam Ali and Seth Carter – 9B

The answer is DARKNESS!

Pathways to Law

I attended a morning called “Pathways to Law” at the Barking Learning Centre. The day was very beneficial in terms of making me understanding the topics and the aspects of a law degree. For example, you can do a mixture degree where you can study two topics together which opens up a lot of future career options. Also, the law conference allowed me to understand the essentials of getting into law. There are no essential A-Level subjects, however, the grades must be high with most universities preferring at least ABB. Two current law students explained how to enter into law, the courses that are covered and their own experience. This provided very beneficial advice as the students spoke about how to be successful at university and emphasised that work experience is essential for a career in law.

Billy Cresswell 12B First Aid Course

On Wednesday 2nd March, the Year 12 Health and Social Care class took part in a first aid course. We started the day learning about the recovery position and what to do if a person has fainted. It is important to put an individual who has passed out and is breathing into the recovery position in case

they choke on bodily fluids or their tongue. We learnt about how to dress cuts with bandages and what must be done depending on how the cut happened. We also discovered how to manage burns and how to help a choking victim. Finally, we ended the course by learning how to conduct CPR.

We found the first aid training beneficial due to the fact that it related very well to the course that we are studying as some of us are keen to become health care assistants and midwives. We also felt that the course gave us knowledge and confidence to take control over situations that many may not be able to respond to with regards to injuries sustained. The trainer was a great teacher who has opened many doors for us in the future and helped us to gain our first aid certificates.

Year 12 BTEC Health and Social Care Class. NSPCC Number Day

NSPCC Number Day took part in the Maths Department on Friday 5th February 2016. We have now collected all of our sponsor money and have raised £111.30. Well done to all students that contributed and a big thank you to Alex Grain for raising a huge £60, Samia Hussain for raising £18.70 and Aaliyah Batchelor-Grant and Clare Morgan for raising £15 each!

Women in Science

To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March, Jo Richardson Community School invited Dr Laura McKemmish to speak to some of our most able girls in Year 9 and Year 10. Dr McKemmish is a quantum chemist who uses physics, computer science and mathematics in her research, so she is a great role model for our aspiring female scientists. In her talk, she spoke about the excellent opportunities that persuing a

science career has given her; for example, conferences in Switzerland, fieldwork in Hawaii and also a tour of NASA to see the James Webb Telescope. She encouraged our students to keep asking questions, follow our passions and not to be put off from taking challenging subjects because they are seen as ‘boy subjects’.

To date, only 12.8% of the UK STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) workforce are women. A recent study found that girls lacked confidence in Science and Maths, even when their results were as good as or better than boys’. In 2014 there were more male than female participants in all major A-level STEM subjects with the exception of Biology, according to the Joint Council for Qualifications.

Science needs more women, so come on girls, what are you waiting for?

Sport Relief 2016 Jo Richardson will be organising an event to raise money for Sport Relief.

Friday 18th March at 2:15pm students from Years 7-9 will be given the opportunity to complete a mile; running, walking, skipping or jogging around the school field. Students are invited to get a sponsorship form from the PE Department to take part in the event. Completed forms and sponsorship money

needs to be given to Miss Wright by Wednesday 16th March in order to take part. Students are asked to raise a minimum of £5. Students must be in trainers but can wear any sports clothes, it is suggested they wear something red.

Year 8 girls give rugby a go!

On Friday 4th March, it was my privilege to accompany 19 enthusiastic young women from Year 8, who were taking part in a day of rugby at Barking Rugby Club, run by the women’s rugby team at the London School of Economics (LSE). These students had undertaken a 10 week unit of work on rugby as part of Year 8 PE and were enthusiastic about learning more. They rotated around a variety of activities covering a range of rugby skills, including touch rugby, tackling, rucking, passing and moving. Our students were complimented on their enthusiasm, dedication and excellent behaviour. They achieved LOCs all round and Sandra Redzynska received a goody bag from Alice, the JRCS group buddy for her brilliant efforts throughout the day, (although I know that if Alice had had 19 bags then everyone would have got one, as they certainly deserved it). The students involved were: Rebecca Marku 8E, Elizabeth Ogunyanwo 8G, Lily Johnson 8B, Sally Turner 8A, Kacey Smith 8B, Ellie Brown 8D, Victoria Bertrand 8C, Jasmin Green 8B, Chelsea Restarick 8D, Samira Begum 8E, Khai Sesay 8D, Alishba Saleemi 8A, Paige Millington 8D, Sandra Redzynska 8D, Sara Marques 8A, Vanessa De Gouveia 8A, Mia Barrett 8B, Gerren Ntiri 8G and Frankie Hendricks 8C. Thanks also go to Ms Boulton for organising this trip and Miss Downey for helping to accompany the students on the day. It was also lovely to see Mr Kersey, Miss Boulton and Mr Smith

(Headteacher) who came over at lunch time to support the event.

If you are aged 11 – 16, female, and have been inspired by the efforts of these girls in Year 8 then Barking Rugby Club are running a session for girls only aged 11 – 16 every Monday evening 7pm – 8pm. For further information e-mail [email protected] or tel 07513 413576.

Year 7 Boys Football On Wednesday 9th March the Year 7 boys football team played against Eastbury and produced their best performance of the year to win 4-0. It was a brilliant performance by everyone in the team and the score line could have been even more emphatic if we had our shooting boots on in the second half. The goals were scored by Taylor Skinner 7A (2), Destiny Efe 7B and Jack Curtis 7F. Well done boys!

Squad: David Elliot 7I, Bayley Maffia 7H, Ernest Peka 7C, Michael Tittley 7A, Taylor Skinner 7A, Jack Curtis 7F, Samuel Osikorobia 7E, Jare Oniwonlu 7B, Nigel Moyo 7H, Fortunate Olaleye 7C, Ade Jolaosho 7G, Rick Owusu Baffour 7H, Destiny Efe 7B and Nana Annan 7C.

Year 8 Borough Netball Rally The Year 8 netball team attended the Secondary Borough Netball Rally on Tuesday 8th March at Barking Abbey. We didn’t start so well and lost the first match 4-1 to Robert Clack, however, we won the second match against Barking Abbey and drew our final match 1-1 against All Saints. This placed us in joint 2nd place in the pool but we sadly

missed out on a semi-final spot due to goal difference. The girls have had a successful season and I have been impressed with their commitment throughout the year. I would also like to thank Joana Balla and Nojus Raudzius for their support on the day in their Sports and Dance Council role. The Barking Abbey staff were hugely impressed with their work ethic and said they were a credit to our school.

Year 8 Netball team: Silvia Martin-Omergie, Iretomiwa Ajala, Joy Osayiwu, Daniella Ihezuo-Nnadi, Esther Harvest, Shantel Jjumba and Hannah-Queren Mbomba.

Love London Working At East Potential we are delighted to be working on the Love London Working Programme, funded by the European Social Fund and match funded by East Thames Group. This programme enables us to work with Economically Inactive Participants within the local area. We are keen to build relationships with local Schools to help unemployed parents into training or sustained employment. Some of the services available through Love London Working include:

help with writing a CV;

placements on one of our many training programmes;

support with securing work experience;

help with job search;

mentoring support;

help with training

help with childcare

We can help those effected by the benefit cap as well as undertake a ‘better off calculation’ to help participants claim the benefit they are entitled to once returning to work! Our aim is to work with local schools to run workshops as well as undertake 1-2-1 support. We have already helped 200 participants find the jobs they want, in 2014/2015 and look forward to helping out the parents at your School and hopefully build a successful and fruitful relationship. We look forward to hearing from you. Mr James Briggs Employment & Training Co-ordinator
