SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Pentecost Sunday; Julian Calendar Pentecost Monday: Tenth Week in Ordinary Time; St. Ephrem Wednesday: St. Barnabas Friday: St. Anthony of Padua Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary; Flag Day

At last! The power hinted at and the Spirit promised are unleashed on this holy day. We call it the birthday of the church. In today’s first reading, that room is filled with wind and fire and bold proclamations in foreign tongues. In the second reading, Paul describes the Pentecost event, too. His description includes all of us. The Spirit lives on in the church in each of us who are members of the Body of Christ, given different gifts from the same Spirit. Only after Pentecost could the apostles look back and understand what Jesus meant when he said, as reported in today’s Gospel reading, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FATHER’S DAY CARDS The Holy Name Ladies Aid Society will be selling Fathers’ Day novena cards this weekend, June 7th and 8th. Remember the fathers in your life, including sons, brothers, uncles, etc. Next weekend, June 14 & 15, members will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes will be by the exits.

TODAY’S SECOND COLLECTION IS FOR OUR BUILDING & MAINTENANCE FUND.

Your generosity allows us to take care of our Parish plant.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora This Saturday morning, June 7th, the San Francis-co Archdiocese will be blessed with the Ordina-tion of four men to the Priesthood: Mark Daniel Doherty, Roger Gunnar Gustafson, Andre Phillip Spyrow and our very own Anthony Salvador Val-

lecillo. Fr. Tony Vallecillo is the son of our parishioners Rolando and Esperanza Vallecillo. Fr. Tony will say his Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Name next weekend, Saturday, June 14th at the 5PM mass and also at the 9:30AM mass on Sunday, June 15th. His first assignment as a priest will be as the Parochial Vicar (Associate Pastor) at St. Matthew Church in San Mateo, and as part time Chaplain at Serra High School. Fr. Tony and I have two special and important dates in common. We have the same ordination and birth days. This Saturday marks the 28th year of my priesthood, being ordained on a Saturday morning also, June 7th, 1986. The two of us were also born on February 10th, but as to the year, let us just drop it. That’s too much information al-ready. Let us just celebrate this memorable weekend and congratula-tions to Fr. Tony and to his beloved parents. Our Archdiocese has just released the list of new assignments of priests. Our Deanery 1, the Sunset’s Neighboring parishes, will experi-ence some movements starting July 1st. Father Dan Nascimento, currently pastor at St. Brendan, will be moving to St. Anne Church. Replacing him at St. Brendan’s is Father Ted Magpayo. Father Nor-man Vitug is now the administrator of St. John of God and at the same time, chaplain at UCSF Hospital. Father Bernard Poggi will be the new associate pastor at St. Thomas Moore. Whenever there are changes, there will be some adjustments. There will be good impressions while there will also be unpleasant reactions. Reminds me of story of a new pastor who stood at the church door greeting parishioners as they left following his first Mass after being appointed by the bishop. The comments were generally welcoming, except for one man who said, “That was a very dull and boring homily, Father.” A few minutes later, the same man showed up in the line again and said, “Father, I don’t think you gave much thought to what you had to say this morning.” Minutes later, the same man appeared again in the line, this time muttering, “You really blew it, Father.” Finally, the priest could stand it no longer. He called the deacon over and asked who the man was. “Him? Oh, that’s Oliver. Don’t let him bother you,” said the deacon. “He’s a little slow. All he does is repeat whatever he hears other people saying.”

HOMEBOUND MASS A special Mass for the Homebound will be celebrated in Flanagan Center on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at 1:30 PM. If you or a member of your family need transportation, or know of others who do, please call Sr. Necy at (415) 664-8590 or Susan Logan at (415)664-5579. Re-freshments will be served after the Mass.

FUNDRAISING DINNER On September 6th, in the gym, we will be having a dinner, as a fund raising event for the building and maintenance of Holy Name of Jesus Church, as well as to support a Canossian Mission in Mexico. All are welcome to attend and enjoy good company, good food, good prizes to be raffled, all for a good price, and all for a good cause. If you feel the Spirit calling you to help in anyway, or if you have any items you would like to donate for our raffle for this most wonderful event – you may call Angela Testani @ 415 586-5754.More infor-mation will follow in the upcoming weeks.

HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name “Tree of Life”, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the “Tree of Life” will go towards a much-needed Capital Improve-

ment Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Please send engraving request with check payment (payable to Holy Name Parish) or drop by the church office, 1555 39th Ave. San Fran-cisco, CA 94122. For more information, please call (415) 664-8590. Attention: We will resume MOVIE NIGHT on Thursday, June 26,

2014 at 7 PM in Flanagan Center.

The Second Va can Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospec ve By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: How does an increasingly interdependent world interact with God’s timeless commandment to love our neigh-bor? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: One of the salient features of the modern world is the growing interdependence of men one on the other, a development promoted chiefly by modern tech-nical advances. Nevertheless brotherly dialogue among men does not reach its perfection on the level of technical progress, but on the deeper level of interpersonal relationships. These demand a mutual respect for the full spiritual dignity of the person. Christian revelation contributes greatly to the promotion of this communion between persons, and at the same time leads us to a deeper understanding of the laws of social life which the Creator has written into man's moral and spiritual nature. God, Who has fatherly concern for everyone, has willed that all men should constitute one family and treat one another in a spirit of brotherhood. For having been created in the image of God, Who "from one man has created the whole human race and made them live all over the face of the earth" (Acts 17:26), all men are called to one and the same goal, namely God Himself. For this reason, love for God and neighbor is the first and greatest commandment. Sacred Scripture, however, teaches us that the love of God cannot be separated from love of neighbor: "If there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.... Love therefore is the fulfillment of the Law" (Rom. 13:9-10; cf. 1 John 4:20). To men growing daily more dependent on one another, and to a world becoming more unified every day, this truth proves to be of paramount importance. Indeed, the Lord Jesus, when He prayed to the Father, "that all may be one. . . as we are one" (John 17:21-22) opened up vistas closed to human reason, for He implied a certain like-ness between the union of the divine Persons, and the unity of God's sons in truth and charity. This likeness reveals that man, who is the only creature on earth which God willed for itself, cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.

Editor’s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, sci-ence, technology and ecumenism.

PRINCIPAL'S LETTER June 3, 2014 Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to Mrs. Sharon Aymard, Mrs. Diane Preble and Mr. Tony Eiras for an outstanding Authors' Night last Thursday, May 29. The gym was literally festooned with second grade students' work from this school year. Students wrote about holidays, seasons, sci-ence activities, history, religion and numerous other topics that were taught in class. Each child read three of their papers and entertained the audience with wonderful singing. Parents brought a wonderful assortment of food to be shared by students, mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings. To top it off, Mrs. Ellen Gee (Nathaniel) and Mrs. Kim Toriumi-Quon (Kaylie) had T-shirts made for each student saying, " Holy Name Sec-ond Grade Authors' Night." All second grade students' names are on the back of the T-shirt. Students were so pleased with their performance and excit-ed about the whole evening. The second grade parents have been wonderful this whole year. Thank you for helping in so many ways for Authors' Night and throughout the school year. The sixth grade baseball team made it to the championship game by beating St. Brendan' on Friday afternoon, May 30th. In order to field this team some of the 5th grade players were moved to the 6th grade team. Good sportsmanship was alive and well , under the lead-ership of coach, Mr. David Valle -Schwenk (Lydia 2nd grade & Benito 6B), who spoke highly of these young boys at Monday morning as-sembly. Thank you Coach David, athletes and parents for a great season. Please feel free to join us for our 8th Grade Awards Mass on Thursday, June 5, at 10:00 a.m., Kindergarten Graduation on Fri-day, June 6, at 10:00 and the 8th Grade Graduation on June 6 at 5:00 p.m. We are proud of all of our graduates and wish them all good luck. God bless the wonderful parents and children of Holy Name School. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos
