M. Rauber, Dr. B. F. Jewett, G. McFarquhar, UIUC) Information Technology Accomplishments 1991: Developed a networked desktop Synoptic Laboratory facility that automated the delivery

of real-time weather information within the UIUC campus. This project, conceived to facilitate instruction in survey, courses eventually became the seed for many of our highly successful future efforts, including The Weather Machine, CoVis collaboratory, The Horizon Project, The Daily Planet, The Weather Visualizer, Interactive Weather Report, WW2010, and now the Virtual Geophysical Exploration Environment (VGEE).

1993: Oversaw the creation of The Weather Machine, one of only two gopher servers providing weather information on the Internet. Later that year, it became one of the built-in bookmarks in TurboGopher.

1993: Managed the development of instructional modules in Apple HyperCard for use by the Collaborative Visualization (CoVis) Project, a project that promoted project based science learning and collaboration.

1994: Spearheaded the development of The Daily Planet, a WWW-version of The Weather Machine, again one of only three web sites providing real-time weather information on the Internet.

1995: Supervised the development of the fully customized Weather Visualizer, which became one of the most successful realizations of our goal to integrate real-time weather products with instructional materials that used or explained those weather products.

1995: An interactive, Java-based visualizer, Interactive Weather Report, was developed under the sponsorship of NASA-funded Horizon Project. It became one of the first Java weather tools on the web.

1997: Orchestrated the design and development of WW2010 hyper-multimedia website, which combined the best of online provision of weather information with faster-local access to educational materials on a CD. This effort required coordination and supervision of nearly 20 students, faculty and staff in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, who selflessly volunteered their time and efforts for a noble cause. To date, over 6,200 WW2010 CDs have been distributed to schools, colleges, universities, community organizations, and the general public. It is estimated that the WW2010 site has received over 100 million hits since its inception in 1997.

2001: Involved in the creation of the Virtual Geophysical Exploration Environment (VGEE), a suite of computer-based tools designed to help learners connect observable, large-scale geophysical phenomena to underlying physical principles. Technologically, this connection is mediated by tools, including a Java-based, multi-dimensional visualization environment, authentic scientific data-sets, concept models that illustrate fundamental physical principles, and an interactive web-based work management system for archiving and evaluating learners’ progress. In this multi-institutional project, our (UIUC) group is primarily responsible for the development of interactive, immersive probes and concept models for use in VGEE and its integration into the visualization environment.

2002-03: Initiated development of, in collaboration with NCSA, a cyberinfrastructure tailored for large ensemble prediction systems that deals with an end-to-end job workflow, including ensemble definition, job execution, visualization, and data interrogation, metadata cataloging Traditional cyber infrastructure environments and computational methodologies are ill-suited to carry out ensemble prediction research involved hundreds of members. So we are developing computational frameworks are needed for the design, execution, processing, mining and visualization of massive numbers of ensemble predictions. An additional consequence of this enormous problem is the need for the development of new tools and techniques for metadata and job management so that supercomputing resources are effectively and efficiently used. Our work to date on tropical cyclones has begun to address the issue of efficient implementation of an ensemble prediction system (Jewett et al. 2003.

2003: The Linked Environments for Atmospheric Discovery (LEAD) is a 5-year, NSF-funded multi-institutional large Information Technology Research effort. The goal of LEAD is to create an integrated and scalable framework for identifying, accessing, preparing, assimilating, predicting, managing, analyzing, mining, and visualizing a broad array of meteorological data and model output, independent of format and physical location. To that end, LEAD will create a series of interconnected, heterogeneous Grid environments to provide a complete framework for mesoscale research, including a set of integrated Grid and Web Services. The LEAD capabilities will provide for the use of analysis tools, forecast models, and data repositories not in fixed configurations or as static recipients of data, but rather as dynamically adaptive, on-demand, Grid-enabled systems that can a) change configuration rapidly and automatically in response to weather; b) continually be steered by new data; c) respond to decision-driven inputs new data; c) respond to decision-driven inputs automatically; and e) steer remote observing technologies to optimize data collection for the problem at hand.
