Salient Achivements: TECHNOLOGY GENERATED AT AAS UNIT, NAUNI, SOLAN:

1. Installation of phone connection with STD facilities. 2. Purchased and installed the FAX machine for sending weather data and receiving weather forecast

from super computer, Delhi. This is the first FAX machine installed in any department of the university.

3. Installation of the Very Small Aperture Terminus (VSAT) for real time communication with super

computer, NCMRWF, DST, IMD and other AAS units in the country. For a room has been developed by doing painting, flooring etc. which was filled with raw coal.

4. The met of Nauni from 1984 to 1996 checked, corrected and get entered in the database software

from a private agency, Solan and now we have good record of digitized met data. Water balance for Nauni was worked out by using the rainfall and evaporation data from 1990 to 1997.

5. A comprehensive Annual Met. Data Report of all the weather parameters was published for the year

1997.

6. Course content of Agrometeorology (AMT-111) have been revised for basic and preliminary knowledge of the subject.

7. The case of opening of a new AAS unit for Kullu valley was taken up with the NCMRWF and DST,

New Delhi and also succeeded. TECHNOLOGY GENERATED AT AAS UNIT, SEOBAG, KULLU:

1. The work of newly opened AAS unit at Horticultural Research Station, Seobag was initiated after joining at this station on March 15, 1999.

2. The issuing of weather forecast based weekly AAS bulletin was started in the valley and first bulletin

was issued on 16 March 1999. The bulletin is helping farmers and orchardists in their day to day intercultural operations and it was an innovation for them.

3. Past climatic data was collected from IARI Regional Station Katrain and HPKVV Regional Research

Station Bajaura to work out climatic normal for the Kullu valley.

4. The Observatory at HRS, Seobag rejuvenated and upgraded from ordinary to Class – 1 Agromet observatory by procuring new instruments and installing at proper direction and space. Following new instrument have been procured from DDGM, Pune and installed in the observatory during the year 1999.

Proving meteorological data to different researchers, planners, other users in and out side of the university in different format as per their requirement.

Participated in ZREAC meeting at RRS, Bajaura and presented the AAS report.

Awareness demonstration of Agromet Advisory Services during the International Dussehra Festival

every year and also, day to day individual consultancy.

Consultancy in different farmers training camps like Horticulture Day on 6-8-1999, Garlic day by NHRDC at village Therman on 4-3-2001 and again state level meeting on Garlic Production at Nagwain on 19-3-2001.

I brought the trainees landing on Indiragandhi International Airport and Domestic Airport, New

Delhi who were coming from Nepal and Bhutan for “International training on beekeeping for Nepalees and Bhutanees”, held at Horticulture Research Station, Seobag during April 20 - May 2, 2001.

A section of Agrometeorology established under the guidance of Associate Director was further

strengthened with installing new instruments replacing old and non functioning ones. Computerization of past meteorological data of HRS Seobag has been completed and streamlined which now readily made available as per university rules to the researchers, planers and other users of Govt. and non Govt. officials as per their requirements.

The observatory has been reoriented as per the IMD specifications by reinstalling all the instruments

i.e. Ordinary Rain Gauge, Automatic Rain Gauge, Open Pan Evaporimeter, Small Stevenson Screen, Double Stevenson Screen, Wind vane, Anemometer and soil thermometers at different depths. New instruments like Snow gauge, dew gauge, grass minimum thermometer Counter Anemometer has been purchased and installed. The new Iron Gate and the fencing of the observatory have been done for the protection and security of the instruments.

The weekly, monthly and annual behaviour of rainfall and temperature at Kullu valley (Bajaura,

Seobag and Katrain) was worked by the analysis of past meteorological data to correlate with the crop production and value addition in quantitative location specific weather prediction for the valley.

Weekly, monthly and annual rainfall probability for Bajaura, Seobag and Katrain was worked out

from the analysis of past meteorological data (from 1962 to 2006) collected from these stations.

Weekly, monthly and annual water balance for Bajaura, Seobag and Katrain was worked out from the analysis of past rainfall and evaporation data (from 1962 to 2006) collected from these stations.

Rainfall probability analysis (1962-2006) also done for the growing and the dormant period of apple

crop to see the importance and impact of rainfall during these two periods.

The quantitative location specific weather forecast from super computer earlier received for three days it has been extended and now received for next four days. Four days time is more sufficient as compare to three days for doing intercultural operation in light of coming weather.

Implementable Technology Generated:- • Meteorological data collected from RRS, Bajaura (1972-2006), IARI Katrain (1962-2006) and recorded at

HRS, Seobag compiled, digitized and readily made available to the different researchers, planers and others users in different format as per the university norms and rate.

• A computer program (software) has been developed with help of a private programmer for the calculation

of chilling hours and chilling units directly from maximum and minimum temperature only. It is still under verification and validation process for Kullu valley.

• The weather forecast based AAS bulletin issued on every Tuesday is very popular among the farmers,

orchardists and other end users. They are adopting the technological advice given through this bulletin. By knowing the weather forecast they are modifying various intercultural operations like irrigation scheduling, spraying of pesticides, hoeing & weeding, fertilizers applications, engagement of labours, picking and harvesting drying of grasses and many mores. The feedback analysis showed that they are getting some economic benefits from the AAS advisories in term of saving of doses of different inputs, time and energy etc.

• Calculation of infection period based on leaf wetness, temperature and relative humidity – prediction of

apple scab. • Continuous dry weather and clear sky – appearance and spread of powdery mildew in tomato, apple and

other crops. • Long dry spell during April and May – appearance and spread of Indian Gypsy moth, thrips in flowers and

mite in apple. • Low rainfall in rainy season and complete dry during the autumn (September, October, November) wooly

aphid infestation on apple emerge. • The FAX machine installed at HRS, Seobag was damaged due to electric fault. The case of purchasing a

new FAX machine was pursued with the funding agency in the annual review meetings and succeeded in getting sanction of purchasing a new one. Now it was working satisfactorily.

• A computer system with TFT monitor along with peripherals like LaserJet printer, Scanner, UPS has been

purchased and installed in March 2004. • BSNL broad band internet connection has been took and installed at HRS, Seobag under AAS project for

receiving weather forecast and sending meteorological data and the AAS bulletin to the concerned.

New findings:

The phenology of ten apple cultivars was observed on every second day on three plants of each cultivar with three replications from bud-bust, green-tip, pink-bud, and full-bloom to physiological maturity at Horticultural Research Station, Seobag (Kullu) from 2001 to 2010.

Growing Degree Days were computed from the temperatures data recorded in Agromet observatory and averaged for ten years taking 4o C as threshold temperature.

The numbers of days taken by all the cultivars to reach the green-tip stage were almost at par (8-10 days) but varied after this stage.

Tydeman required lower GDD for maturity but higher for attaining green-tip, pink-bud, full-bloom and petal-fall stages followed by Commercial. On an average apple required 94 GDD for green-tip, 195 for pink-bud, 273 for full-bloom, 381 for petal-fall and 2692 for physiological maturity.

Cultivars completing the rest period earlier used more thermal units and giving good fruit yields as compare to those breaking their dormancy later.

Availability of heat and sun light is must during growth period for higher and stable yield as thermal units explain more than 88 % variation in fruit yield.

Inventions/innovations. Now the AAS Bulletin is being issued for five days in advance & for each and every district and widely published in most of the Hindi dailies. So, more and more farmers/orchardists are being brought under the Agromet Advisory Services and the AAS Bulletin is an innovation for these farmers. The installation of Automatic Weather Station (AWS) under AAS project at HRS, Seobag will also an innovative for the valley which will help in recording the meteorological data with increased frequency even for minute, hours and day or depending upon the requirement of the user. It has been installed successfully and stated working satisfactorily. The data of AWS will be useful for the verification of weather forecast and utilization in different research purposes.
