MESSAGE FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

Hi everyone Well it’s now over 18 months since we all met at our monthly members meeting and all our group meetings. I don’t know about you but I have missed our meetings and our groups we should hopefully all be back together again with our groups up and running. I must, at this point, give my thanks to our Committee who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, keeping our U3A open. Next year looks full of good and interesting things, hopefully with some new groups, with lots of trips that I have arranged and interesting speakers, etc. Regards Diane Chairman

My forgetter's getting better

But my rememberer is broke

To you that may seem funny

But, to me, that is no joke.

For when I'm 'here' I'm wondering

If I really should be 'there'

And, when I try to think it through,

I haven't got a prayer!

Often times I walk into a room,

Say "what am I here for?"

I wrack my brain, but all in vain

A zero, is my score.

At times I put something away

Where it is safe, but, Gee!

The person it is safest from

Is, generally, me!

When shopping I may see someone,

Say "Hi" and have a chat,

Then, when the person walks away

I ask myself, "who was that?"

Yes, my forgetter's getting better

While my rememberer is broke,

And it's driving me plumb crazy

And that isn't any joke.

One March evening, the boss of a big company needed to call one of his employees about an urgent problem with one of the main computers, dialled the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. ' Hello.' 'Is your daddy home?' he asked. ' Yes, 'whispered the small voice. 'May I talk with him?' The child whispered, 'No.' Surprised, and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, 'Is your Mommy there?' ' Yes.' 'May I talk with her?' Again the small voice whispered, 'No.' Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?' ' Yes, 'whispered the child, 'a policeman.'

Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?' ' No, he's busy' , whispered the child. 'Busy doing what?' ' Talking to Daddy and Mommy and the Fireman, 'came the whispered answer. Growing concerned and even worried as he heard what

sounded like a Helicopter through the earpiece on the phone the boss asked, 'What is that noise?' 'A hello-copper' answered the whispering voice. 'What is going on there?' asked the boss, now truly alarmed. In an awed whispering voice the child answered, 'The search team just landed the hello-copper.' Alarmed, concerned, and even more then just a little frustrated the boss asked, 'What are they searching for?' Still whispering, the young voice replied along with a muffled giggle: 'ME.'

We have been meeting since the U3A started and I have been the convenor. We will meet again eventually at Morrison’s Community Room, fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm.

Meetings are a mixture of talks from me to give you ideas for research, support for members who are doing their own family research, talks by other members and members meetings, where each member gives a 10 minute talk about an ancestor with an interesting past.

We can also do research for you, to get you started or solve a puzzle. Everyone has a past ancestry that you may know little about. If you want to find out about that past, we can help you. We use the two main genealogy sites, Find My Past and Ancestry, which many members belong to.

There is always room for new members to join us.

ARE YOU AT A LOOSE END/WOULD LIKE COMPANY AT THE WEEKEND?

JOIN THE WEEKEND CLUB

WE HOPE TO MEET ONCE A MONTH, MOSTLY ON SUNDAY, TO HAVE LUNCHES, VISIT PLACES OF INTEREST, ETC.

SUGGESTIONS ARE MOST WELCOME.

-oOo-

Our group was up and running before lock down. We met 3 times on a Sunday every 4 weeks.

The first time we met at The Oysterfleet when 14 people turned up. I was delighted that so many responded.

The second time, we went to Hockley Garden Centre and then had lunch at The Traveller's Joy in Rayleigh.

The 3rd time was at Affinity Restaurant in Leigh.

I hope to continue the group when we can meet up again because everyone enjoyed themselves each time we went out.

ANSWER PAGE 26

If you are hesitant about running a U3A group, or would like to know what’s

involved, we have a booklet that we hope will reassure you.

There are certain reservations that people

commonly have about being a U3A Convenor (group leader).

Our booklet looks at some of these and is designed to put your mind at ease.

Please ask Linda, our Groups Coordinator,

for a Group Convenors Handbook.
