Atlas Questions: 1. (Sourcing)What kind of document is this? Who created it? When? At the top left of the source (atlas), you can see that there are tiny words that say “Stanford History Education Group” my group thinks that’s where the source was gotten from. And then at the bottom right there is a website. It said it was at sheg.stanford.edu which is a real website that is credible for the information given. Probably made by Stanford students or professors. Made in 1375. 2. (Corroboration) How does the Catalan Atlas compare to TheHuffingtonPost blog post in terms of its depiction of Mansa Musa? Unlike TheHuffingtonPost this gives credible information that can be proven and not opinionated. The image of Mansa Musa in the first blog was very bias. They said that he was the richest man ever, which when we talked about it as a class we all agreed that the website it was found on wasn’t informational. But this resource gives correct information that can be proven and is from historical documents. 3. Do you think this is an accurate depiction of Mansa Musa? Why or why not? Yes, I do because the information is mainly from historical documents and a website that is very credible. I even checked to make sure. Also, they didn’t put any opinionated information in it signaling that it is all facts.

Al-Umari: Guiding Questions 1) (Sourcing) Who is Al-‐Umari? Do you think he is a reliable source of information on Mansa Musa’s pilgrimage to Mecca? Why, or why not? Al-‐Umari was an Arab historian from Damascus, Syria. I do believe he is a reliable source of information on Mansa Musa’s pilgrimage to Mecca because he was there and he lived through it. However, I do wish that Abu would have wrote something more detailed about Mansa Musa and put it out there because he actually met him and dealt in work. Also, Abu should’ve said how Mansa Musa made him feel to really settle on the idea of what kind of leader Mansa Musa was. I just think if Abu wrote an entry then we could have a better idea on Mansa Musa. 2) (Corroboration) How does this document compare to The Huffington Post blog post and the Catalan Atlas in terms of its depiction of Mansa Musa? This document talks about how religious and generous Mansa Musa was. If you didn’t catch this; Mansa Musa only made this journey because of how religious and kind he was. Overall, if Mansa Musa weren’t religious and kind then he would miss out on a lot of the things that he has done to change the world & most importantly West Africa. Now, The Huffington Post was all about how he was super rich and nothing else. It didn’t allow anything to show how noble, kind, and generous he was. Nothing seemed to matter to the writer expect Mansa Musa’s extreme wealth. In the Catalan Atlas it talked about how he changed West Africa and went tons of places. I kind of think that document C takes all of the others and combines it into an information source that is very dependable and talks about a variety of Mansa Musa’s traits. 3) (Close Reading) How does the emir Abu describe Mansa Musa to Al-‐Umari? According to the emir Abu, what traits does Mansa Musa possess? Emir Abu describes Mansa Musa as a kind person, but he is a little surprised that he doesn’t decide to use his Arabic language knowledge and instead uses an interpreter. But overall I believe that Abu thinks Mansa Musa is a good leader. Also I think that Abu likes Mansa Musa because he treated him like he deserved to be treated and settles his deal with his Pilgrimage. 4) Do you think Al-‐Umari’s description of Mansa Musa is accurate? Why or why not? Yes, I personally think that Mansa Musa is exactly what Abu described. I feel like people portrayed him to be a sickly rich and not care about anything else except for money. But, I think that Mansa Musa’s intentions were out of kindness and generosity, and they also showed off that way. All of his plans turned out in a good manner when he was alive.

1 Type: I have learned that West Africa was highly lucky and affected due to Mansa Musa. It was this way because
Mansa Musa’s plans and ways of living were excellent and could be done easily. He was rich and generous which
was always good. He donated a lot of things to pilgrimages and other places in West Africa so that they could
spread the wealth and help the trading business.
2 Al-‐Umari -‐ direct evidence Type: In document C it talks about how Mansa Musa is
very kind and generous to pilgrimages. It shows what
he did to donate some gold to Abu’s place.
Catalan Atlas -‐ direct evidence Type: In the atlas it talks about Mansa Musa and what
he did to West Africa. It talks about real things that
were said back then, it just gets the gist of his travels
and accomplishments.
3 How did Mansa Musa affect Mali and the rest of the world? Topic Sentence: He took over West Africa and made it wealthy. He traded and expanded a lot to his place. He made sure everyone was taken care of. He was rich and generous which helped the other places in West Africa.

I’ve also learned that Abraham Cresques the mapmaker had never visited West Africa but he relied on the

Mansa Musa affected Mali and the rest of the world by sharing his wealth to everyone who needs it.
First, he changed West Africa and the people in it because he shared his wealth to all the poor and was very
generous. This changed West Africa because if he didn’t share his wealth and was very selfish and greedy then people
wouldn’t like him and there could be attempts of assassination and other territories would come to Mali and try to take
over and take all it’s wealth. But as a generous person he shares his wealth and people are happy because all the poor
get money to feed their families and other territories won’t want to take over because Mansa Musa already shares with
them.
Second, Mansa Musa changed West Africa because he went to other cities on pilgrimages giving wealth to them.
This is important because if he didn’t share his wealth (not saying he has to share all of it) the other cities/kingdoms they

would want to take over and take all the wealth for themselves. Mansa Musa sharing is making them not want to take
over because they can get stuff without even fighting for it.
This is how Mansa Musa changed West Africa and the rest of the world.

1 Type: West africa has a harsh hot climate and has one of the oldest landmarks the sahara desert and that it was
wealthy from salt and gold and some places copper. Mansa Musa was disgustingly rich because his place that he
reigned had a lot of salt and gold. Mansa Musa was also very polite and respectful he also gave extra gold to
places he visited and had supported education. A lot of people saw him as a religious man who was devoted to
his religion which he was.
2 Al-‐Umari -‐ direct evidence Type: This document is about the great Mansa musa
and how he was wealthy and was a very religious man.
“ I came here for my pilgrimage and nothing else” this
shows that all he wants to do is honor his religion.
Also, “ loads of unworked native gold and other
valuables” this shows he was wealthy and willing to
help others.
Catalan Atlas -‐ direct evidence Type: This document is about the lord Mansa musa
who was very noble and rich. the quotes that tell me
this is “ the richest and most noble king of all the land”
this tell me that he is wealthy and very noble to other
people.
3 How did Mansa Musa affect Mali and the rest of the world? Topic Sentence: Mansa musa had affected Mali and the rest of the world with his wealth and how he had believed in education in my opinion. He affected them by his wealth because he was able to build grand things and give things like extra gold to other countries like egypt. He affected them by his belief in education because it showed people that you could learn and work jobs in the community to help out on different things like architecture and you did not just need to be dumb but you could do something with your life.

4 How did Mansa Musa affect Mali and the rest of the world? Include your thesis statement (topic sentence), at least 2 pieces of evidence, and reasoning to support your argument. (4 paragraphs, 3-‐4 sentences per paragraph)
Around the world there are people who influence different beliefs to other people or places and this man Mansa
Musa had influenced Mali and now the rest of the world. He had done many things to influence the rest of the world
and Mali but here is two ways he did. This is how he influence Mali and the rest of the world well he influenced the
world by his wealth and his belief in different things. So Mansa Musa had influenced Mali and the rest of the world
because of these two things and many more.
Mansa Musa had influenced the rest of the world by his wealth. He had influenced the rest of the world by his
wealth because, he helped places like Egypt and gave them loads of gold, which they could spend and that helped
sprout Egypt’s economy. In document C it says, “ he left no emir or holder of royal office without a gift of a load of gold”
After he gave the gold to Egypt and other places the gold's value went down and then the economy was ruined but
Mansa Musa had good intentions which shows he affected the world by his wealth. Also, Mali had a lot of salt and gold
and Mansa Musa used that money to build buildings for the community, which helped people learn education. So this
shows how he had helped the world and Mali with his wealth.
Mansa Musa had also affected Mali and the rest of the world by his beliefs of different things. He had influenced
Mali and the world with his different beliefs about culture, he was Muslim. A quote that shows he influenced Mali and
the rest of the world with his beliefs is, “I do not wish to mix anything else with my pilgrimage” after he turned Muslim,
people and his subjects followed him into the same religion because his subjects were so loyal to him which show that
he affect his subjects and Mali because of his beliefs. Another belief that affected the world was his belief in education
and that made people and scholars want to come to Mali and go to school. This is how his beliefs influenced the rest of
the world.
In conclusion, Mansa Musa affected Mali and the rest of the world. He influenced the rest of the world by his
beliefs and wealth. These are the reasons why he affected or influenced the rest of the world.
