Welly Park History Arthur Wellesley, later known as the Duke of Wellington, was a famous British soldier and politician. He rose to fame on June 18, 1815, when he led the 72,000 soldier strong British army at the Battle of Waterloo and defeated Napoleon’s French army, with help from Prussian allies. The battle took place near the Belgian village of Waterloo, about 9 miles out of Brussels. Once the battle was won, it ended 23 years of recurrent warfare between France and the other countries of Europe. The descendants of the original Duke of Wellington, the 8th Duke and Duchess of Wellington opened Wellington Country Park in 1974 and has been open since!
