· Bernabé Blaauw he Spitskoppe, situated about 50 kilometres north-west of the town of Usakos on the way to Swakopmund, is a kaleidoscope of colour, rock formations, birds and plant life. Also called the “Matterhorn of Namibia”, it is a popular venue for mountaineers with numerous high grade faces which make for delicate rock climbing. The Spitskoppe is a group of granite peaks that is more than 700 million years old with the highest peak rising more than 700 metres from the desert floor. The first successful climb to the summit of the Spitskoppe was T Spitskoppe, a sight to see achieved in 1946 by Hans and Else Wong and Johannes de Villiers Graaff. Apart from the abundance of sights provided by nature and numerous hiking trails, many examples of Bushman paintings can also be found on the rocks in the area. The picturesque campsites in the area are complimented by well- maintained and clean “bush toilets”, erected within walking distance from most of the camping sites, as well as a shop and restaurant at the reception area. Hot showers are also available here at no extra charge as it is included in the entrance fee. The Spitskoppe falls within the jurisdiction of the Gaingu Conservancy while the rest camp was taken over by a private developer who is co-managing it with the local community.
