Standard•The student should be able to explain the major concerns of Europeans regarding issues such as {acid rain in Germany air pollution in United kingdom and the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl ,Ukraine.}

Page 3: Nande Bolton SS6G9.a

Essential questions

1. What environmental concerns do countries in Europe face?

2. How are specific countries addressing specific environmental concerns?

3. How did the disaster that occurred in Chernobyl, Ukraine affect that region and other surrounding area’s?

What environmental concerns do countries in

Europe face?•Killer slugs-people who live in central of

Northern Europe. Have problems with killer slugs attacking herbs and vegetables.

•Climate change-climate change is happening and its effects are wide ranging. Climate change adaption must be integrated into polices across all sectors and engage all levels of society. To achieve that new frameworks and governance structures is needed.

How are specific countries addressing specific

environmental concerns?• Germany has lots of acid rain from factories in the area and they are

trying as hard as they can to stop factories by suing them and making them stop polluting the air.

• England has air pollution from power plants, automobiles, trucks, industrial sources, chemicals, factories and paint. As a result of EU legislation, much progress has been made by tackling air pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, lead , nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and benzene. Despite a reduction in some harmful emissions, air quality continues to cause problems.

How are specific countries addressing specific

environmental concerns? Continued……..

•Ozone – regularly exceeds safe limits. Fine particulates also present a health risk which is of increasing concern. Clearly, more needs to be done at local, national, European and international level.

How has the disaster that occurred in

Chernobyl ,Ukraine affect that region and other surrounding areas?• In 1986 the nuclear power plant blew up and had an

effect on Chernobyl and other surrounding areas. People have to stay 19 miles away from the nuclear power plant because of the chemicals in the air such as plutonium , uranium and other chemicals. Chernobyl was not a well known country until the disaster occurred . It is the worst disaster in man kind. only 100,000 people evacuated and others died. Scientist believe this disaster can occur again . That is why they are risking there lives so they can figure out what happened so it won’t happen again.
