Nanoscience student, University of Regensburg Nanoscience in Argentina for one Semester - a great experience! nano! During my 6 month research internship at the Centre for Bionanoscience Research (CIBION) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, I joined the Group “Applied Nanophysics”. I worked on the fabrication of individual plasmonic nanostructures based on colloidal nanoparticles using optical forces and their characterization, e.g. by optical spectroscopy. In particular, I performed experiments of light driven reshaping of silver nanoparticles. Upon exposure to light, small (2-5nm) spherical silver nanoparticles reshape to form rather large and flat equilateral triangular platelets (~200 nm in side x 5 nm in height). The mechanism of this process is yet unknown and I explored the influence of different optical parameters, such as wavelength, power density and exposure time. As I mostly organized this internship myself, I gained a lot of experience and I could give you some advice on how to organize such an internship in case you are planning to do one on your own in the near future. Besides the scientific aspect such an internship includes a lot of social and cultural experiences which I will always remember and therefore I’d like to share with you.
