AUGUST, 2017 VOLUME 96 / ISSUE 5, SANDY SILVEIRA, EXALTED RULER NAPA CALIFORNIA
MESSAGE FROM YOUR EXALTED RULER
Our July Elk of the month was David Bridges. Dave is always ready to help with our BBQ's and was one of our Crab Feed chairmen. Dave and Sholly are very supportive of lodge events and did a wonderful job organizing the silent auction for the Crab Feed. The silent auction and Dave's auctioneering skills are very successful and great fundraisers. His dedication to the lodge is appreciated.
I would like to thank Ray Martinez for chairing the Leading Knight's position at the July 12th meeting. His granddaughter was initiated that evening and Ray was happy to be a part of her initiation. It was wonderful that Ray presented the Leading Knight's portion of the Ritual including Sweet Charity. Nicely done Ray.
July has been a busy month for this Exalter Ruler and the First Dude. We had a nice group of members who attended the Grand Lodge Convention in Reno. Judy & Len Fisher, Shelia and Cal Cox, Mike and Judy Biggs, Bud and Linda Morgan, Carolyn & Rich Simmons, Tim & Sandy Jaeger, Dave and myself. A very nice turnout from Napa. I presented the Raymond Benjamin award to the winning Ritual Team from Tallahassee, Florida. I don't mind telling everyone that there was a lack of communication as to where I would be seated and when I should be called to present. It was also a little intimidating to be in this large convention center on a large stage looking out at thousands of people. I was a
little shaky and I am sure you heard my knees knocking here in Napa. But, it all went well and it was a great experience for me. I attended the opening ceremony on the 17th, and both Sessions on the 18th and 19th. The new Grand Lodge Officers were elected, and many reports were given on all Elk projects and committees. Also, our new DD Joe Tato was installed on the 19th. There were 19 motions to be voted on. If you would like more information regarding these motions please call Judy or myself. I would like to mention the #1 motion, it was to determine if we should continue with the short version of the Ritual or return to the long version. The vote was to return to the long version. So, Napa lodge will resume the long version of the Ritual at our first meeting in August. All our Napa members attended the Southwest Reception Buffet at the Atlantis Hotel, the food was delicious and the ladies all looked wonderful in their fancy dresses and the men were awesome in their white dinner jackets. After dinner some of us attended the ER's Ball at the Grand Sierra Hotel. At the Ball we met the new Grand Exalted Ruler and received his pin. The ballroom at the Grand Sierra was decorated nicely and the music was outstanding, this ER and her First Dude could not help but dance. Most of our group did a little shopping, visited the Reno Elks, enjoyed the food and drinks at our Hospitality Room and in general had a successful convention experience. Next year will be the Elk's 150th anniversary and Grand Lodge Convention will be held in San Antonio, TX.
I would like to encourage all our old and new members to consider running for an office. The officers we have now are doing a great job, but we do not want to wear them out. In the next few months I will be asking members to step forward and hold a chair, or an officer's position. We will be happy to inform, encourage and train anyone who is interested.
*Only one Lodge meeting in August on the 16th *House, Hall and Trustee's meetings on the 8th *Jamboree is Aug. 18-19th in Eureka

FROM YOUR LODGE SECRETARY Hello to all!
I hope you are all enjoying the summer. It is going by very fast, almost into August already. We just returned from Reno and Grand Lodge. There were a lot of our Lodge members there and we all had a great time. Very proud of our ER Sandy Silveira when she presented the Raymond Benjamin award to the winning ritual team.
At our last Lodge meeting, July 12th, we initiated six new members into our Lodge: Eric Hanson, Richard Cabral, Martha Tripp, Jon Umlauf, Brian Freeto, & Arijana Martinez. Welcome them to our Lodge! Our next meeting will be August 16th, hope to see you there! We will be initiating more new members at that meeting.
At this writing, there are still 42 members who are delinquent with their dues. Please send in your dues as soon as possible so you can come into the Lodge and be involved in all the great activities we have to offer.
Also, Hot August Sunday is coming up on August 6th. We still need pop-ups. Please bring them to the Lodge. Thank you.
And last but not least, a special thank you to Chuck and Marian Wood for helping count the purple pigs!

MALCOM J. MC PHERSON, JR. ~ GRAND EXALTED RULER ~ 2017-18
Malcolm J. (Mac) McPherson, Jr. was born in Newark, New Jersey on December 7, 1955 to Malcolm J. McPherson, Sr. and Miriam (nee Murray) McPherson. Malcolm has one sister, Susanne McPherson. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Lyndhurst High School, Seton Hall University and Seton Hall Law School, graduating law school in 1981.
Malcolm met his wife Patricia (Pat) (nee Schember) in high school and they were married on August 15, 1981. They have two daughters, Meghan and Mallory, both of whom are officers of Lyndhurst Lodge No. 1505. Upon graduation from law school, Malcolm joined the law firm of Edwards and Antholis as an associate until becoming a partner in 1986, remaining there until 1990.
In 1991, he opened his own private practice specializing in civil law, including matrimonial, municipal land use, wills and estates. He was also a former attorney for the Passaic County Elks Cerebral Palsy Treatment Center. In 1992 he was appointed the attorney for the Lyndhurst Rent Leveling Board and presently still holds that position.
Malcolm was initiated into Lyndhurst Lodge No. 1505 in March 1981, proposed by his soon to be father-in-law, Walter Schember, Sr. He was installed as Lodge Esquire in March 1982 and continued on as Esteemed Lecturing Knight, Esteemed Loyal Knight, Esteemed Leading Knight, and elected Exalted Ruler in 1986-1987. Following that, Malcolm served his Lodge in many capacities including Justice of the Subordinate Forum from 1987 - 2005. He achieved Honorable Life Membership in April 1997.
On the State level, he served as Chairman for the North Central District's Ritual Committee as well as being a certified Ritualistic Judge, which he continues to be to this day. He served as attorney for both the New Jersey State Elks Association Convention and Special Children’s Committee. Malcolm was also Chairman of the New Jersey State Laws Committee. He was elected President of the New Jersey State Elks Association 1999 - 2000.
At the Grand Lodge level, Malcolm was appointed District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of New Jersey's North Central District in 1995-1996, Grand Lodge Ritualistic Committeeman in 2002 - 2003, Grand Lodge Committee on Judiciary in 2003 - 2005, member of the Grand Forum from 2005 until 2010, serving as its Chief Justice, and Chairman of the Pardon Commission in 2009 - 2010, Special Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the State of New Jersey from 2009 to the present.
On a personal level, Malcolm was a member and coach of the Little Falls Athletic Club. He coached basketball and softball in Little Falls from 1989 until 2001. He was a member of the American Bar Association. He and his family are parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel R.C. Church.

2017 JAMBOREE ~ EUREKA ELKS LODGE ~ AUGUST 18TH
AND 19TH
A big THANK YOU to Adam Welsh and his crew for all their hard work
around the Lodge fixing all the water damage! It’s looking good around here!
The Elks Ear E.N.F. No that does not mean Elks Need Funds. Well, yes, it does kind of. We just had our V.P. Visitation and he said we were the best Lodge ever!! But, I am not sure how many he had visited. But he also said we were not only the last of our nine lodges in our E.N.F. per capita, but had no funds listed. Dadburn, that did not sit so well. (Keep in mind this was right before we sent off our annual check with what we collected from dues, which was still very minimal and didn’t meet our per capita…)
Here is what it boils down to. The Elks National Foundation requires a per capita of about $4.44 per member. When we meet this amount we can apply for all kind of goodies, such as grants for funding projects for our community and various scholarships for our local students. This year the E.N.F. sent $900,000 to the California and Hawaii Purple Pig Walk in Palm Springs.
OK, how do we get out of this mess?
Well, there is a fund raiser that is going to be held at our Lodge with help from the San Rafael Lodge. There will be ukulele band along with a dance group. The date is September 23rd. It will be a fun event!! Another great way to help is when you pay your dues, just add a little to the Elks National Foundation Box at the bottom of your dues notice. Then next year we will be all smiles. Ok, that's your lesson for today.
Also, we have the Hot August Car Show with all its side events. Not only great cars, a chili cook off, music, a dunk tank and great chefs to burn your hotdogs and hamburgers. We may have entertainment, depending on how the bar goes!! This is a fun event, don't miss it!!
The best is yet to come!
